Case Analysis of English Reading Teaching in High School under the Perspective of Ecological Classroom

Abstract

With the rapid development of global economy and technology,the contradiction between human beings and nature has been presenting the conspicuous characteristics of deterioration.Consequently,environmental problems are becoming increasingly prominent.People are being increasingly aware of the importance of protecting nature and setting about promoting harmony between human beings and nature.The theory of ecology is of great importance to the environmental protection and education.For one thing,the adoption of theory of ecology will provide a scientific foundation and guidance for protecting and constructing the ecological environment.For another,the adoption of theory of ecology will not merely provide a completely fresh perspective for the reform of education and teaching,but build a theoretical foundation for the research of classroom-based teaching.

English reading plays a vital part in the process of English study in high school.As a consequence of the fact that the competence of English reading is universally acknowledged to be the basis and prerequisite for students to further grasp other language skills concerned.The cultivation of English reading ability can lay a solid foundation for the formation of other abilities concerned.However,there exist a variety of problems in the process of high school English reading teaching in China.For example,teachers adopt the type of spoon-feeding throughout the class,ignoring students’initiative.Besides,most teachers do not teach students the methods to study from the perspective of a lifelong learning.The problems mentioned above are all various reflections of the non-ecological classroom.

Based on the theory of ecological classroom and combined with the author’s five-month internship experience in No.1High School of Dalian Development Zone,the thesis analyzes English reading teaching cases by employing the approaches of Case Analysis,Classroom Observation and Interview,with the purpose of answering the following two questions:1.What are the problems existing in high schools’English reading teaching under the perspective of ecological classroom?2.What effective methods can be taken to improve English reading teaching in high school based on the theory of ecological classroom?

The analysis of classroom teaching cases are indicative of the fact that current English reading teaching classes are not characterized by the unity between holistic correlation and dynamic balance,the unity between pluralism and harmony,the unity between openness and interaction,the unity between finiteness and infiniteness,and the unity between disparity and standard which are advocated by the theory of ecological classroom.Accordingly,in this thesis some relevant suggestions are,

therefore,brought up from the aspects of setting up a harmonious environment and a system of multiple evaluations.Theoretically,this thesis is expected to enrich the theories relevant to ecological classroom and class teaching;Practically,it is expected to arouse the attention of the teachers and furthermore to urge them to improve significantly English reading teaching on the basis of the theory of ecological classroom so that the reform of new curriculum is implemented further.
