Topic 1

Should college students take part-time jobs?

Pro-side arguments:

1. It's good for students to have part-time jobs because this helps cultivate independence among young people.

2. Part-time jobs in business can foster a sense of competition, which is important for students in the future.

3. Part-time job enhances a young person's social development.

4. Being able to earn their own money gives students a feeling that they've become adult and, therefore, makes them feel more mature.

5. Part-time jobs make students more confident in themselves because through the work they can realize their own value and prove that they are capable people.

6. Part-time job experience gives students an insight into what work is about and prepares them psychologically for their future jobs.

7. After-school work teaches students how hard it is to earn money and helps develop thrift in our younger generation.

8. Part-time jobs can help students apply their knowledge in practice, and, in return, their experience will make them know better what they have learned in classes and books.

9. Part-time jobs can make students' lives more colorful and are good for their personal development.

10. Students who have part-time jobs can relieve, to some extent, the economic burdens of their parents.

11. With the money earned, students can buy many of the books they like.

Con-side arguments:

1. It's not good for students to do part-time jobs because they will become money-oriented.

2. Many students who have part-time jobs have shown a decline in their studies.

3. Part-time jobs often distract students' attention from their studies, and some students even play truant.

4. The main task of students is to study hard and learn what is needed for the development of our nation.

5. Since students are in formative years, part-time jobs may expose them to social illnesses at an age when they can hardly differentiate good from bad.

6. If student want to accumulate some job experience, they can step out of campus when they are granted to have internsh ip. So it’s no need to take up those time on which they are expected to spend on books or extra-curriculum activities.

7. If students or their family can really not afford the expensive tuition, they can apply for a loan from the bank. And they can pay off the money when they graduate from university and work to earn enough money to support himself and even their family.

Topic 2

Do the Advantages of Television Outweigh the Disadvantages? Pro-side arguments:

1. Television is not only a convenient source of entertainment, but also a comparatively cheap one.

2. Television, it is often said, keeps one informed about current events, allows one to follow the latest developments in science and politics.

3. Television offers an endless series of programs which are both instructive and entertaining.

Con-side arguments:

1.The television viewer takes no initiative. He is completely passive and has

everything presented to him without any effort on his part.

2.We get so used to watching TV, so dependent on its flickering pictures that it

begins to dominate our lives.

3.The poor quality of TV programs is often criticized.

Reference:

Television is now playing a very important part in our life. But television, like other things, has both advantages and disadvantages. Do the former outweigh the latter?

In the first place, television is not only a convenient source of entertainment, but

also a comparatively cheap one. For a family of four, for example, it is more convenient as well as cheaper to sit comfortably at home, with almost unlimited entertainment available, than to go out in search of amusement elsewhere. They do not have to pay for expensive seats at the theatre, the cinema, or the opera, only to discover, perhaps, that the show is disappointing. All they have to do is press a button, and they can see plays, films, operas, and shows of every kind, not to mention political discussions and the latest exciting football match. Some people, however, maintain that this is precisely where the danger lies. The television viewer takes no initiative. He makes no choice and exercises no judgment. He is completely passive and has everything presented to him without any effort on his part.

Television, it is often said, keeps one informed about current events, allows one to follow the latest developments in science and politics, and offers an endless series of programs, which are both instructive and entertaining. The most distant countries and the strangest customs are brought right into one's sitting room. It could be argued that the radio performs this service just as well; but on television everything is much more living, much more real. Yet here again there is a danger. We get so used to looking at it, so dependent on its flickering pictures that it begins to dominate our lives.

There are many other arguments for and against television. The poor quality of its programs is often criticized. But it is undoubtedly a great comfort to many lonely elderly people. And does it corrupt or instruct our children? I think we must realize that television in itself is neither good nor bad. It is the uses to which it is put that determine its value to society.

Topic 3: Should we diet in order to keep fit?

Pro-side arguments:

1. Being overweight is bad for one's health because it leads to heart disease, high

blood pressure etc.

2. Medical science has proved that animal fats and an excessive amount of sugar

are harmful to one's health.

3. Fat people suffer psychologically and physically.

4. It is hard for fat men and women to get ready-made clothes.

5. Fat men and women are unattractive to look at.

6. Fat people get tired easily.

7. Fat people should put themselves on a diet because they eat more than they

really need.

8. Obese people are often objects of ridicule owing to their abnormal figures.

Con-side arguments

1. Dieting does more harm than good to one's health for the simple reason that a

dieter suffer constantly from malnutrition.

2. Dieters lead a miserable life because they are forever hungry and, at the same

time, they have to go through the torture of watching others enjoy their three meals a day.

3. Dieters do not enjoy life fully. They miss one of the most important things in

good food.

4. Many people diet not because they really want to live a healthy life, but because

they are vain.

5. Many dieters are merely fashion followers. They will undertake gaining weight

if being fat becomes fashionable one day.

6.What dieters are interested in is nothing but the battle against spreading hips,

protruding tummies, double chins, etc.

7. Dieters may lose some weight. Once they stop, however, they gain weight again,

which is more harmful to one's health.

8. Those on a diet are simply senseless. They try to keep their "good figures" at the

expense of their health.

Reference:

?Have you ever been on a diet?

?How do you know if you are fat?

?What is the best way to diet?

?Do you think dieting can be dangerous?

?Do you think fiber is important in your diet?

?What kind of fiber is the best when you are trying to loose weight?

?Do you think protein is important in a balanced diet?

?What is a good source of protein?

?Do you think people who are fat can be happy?

?Do you think people are in general are gaining weight or loosing weight?

?Have you ever been on a diet?

?What kind of diet would you recommend to your friend?

?What kind of diet would recommended for an older person(40's) and

a younger person(teens)?

?What is the difference between diet and a healthy diet?

A good diet is important for good health. A healthy and varied diet can help to maintain a healthy body weight, enhance general wellbeing and reduce the risk of a number of diseases including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis. Dieting is associated with sensible and rational living. It also leads to longevity. Dieting enables people to enjoy life more.

A healthy diet is a diet based on breads, potatoes, and other cereals and is rich in fruits and vegetables. A healthy diet will include moderate amounts of milk and dairy products, meat, fish or meat/milk alternatives, and limited amounts of foods containing fat or sugar.

No single food can provide all the essential nutrients that the body needs. Therefore, it is important to consume a wide variety of foods to provide adequate intakes of vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre, which are important for health.

Many people diet not because they really want to live a healthy life, but because they are vain. They try to keep their "good figures" at the expense of their health. Dieters lead a miserable life because they are forever hungry and, at the same time, they have to go through the torture of watching others enjoy their three meals a day.

Thanks for the Chairman, please let me give my best wishes to everyone here。Now,I will give you the conclusion of this debate。 Reviewing all the debate,it’s not difficult for us to find that there are three important errors my opposite debaters had made. First of all,Perhaps you ignored to analysis the topic of our debate. What we are discussing is which is more important, instead of that which is important; If I understood you correctly, you said that we are dependent on the opportunity so that we woul d say “NO” to the hard work, which I’m What we want to express is that when someone has opportunity and the hard work at the same time,The former is more important for him to achieve success. Wha t’s more,as we all know, man proposes, god disposes. AS the competitive nature of our society are more and more Intense in today’s life, people have to learn much more knowledge, put in more by ourselves while we can do hard work as much as possible。Thus,we insist that luck and opportunity are more important than hard work for people if you want to get succeed. The power of hard work is limited. Some things are just out of our reach. For instance, We pray for good weather before our picnic day, we pray for a clear head for a big test, we pray for a long life free of illness and accidents. We say “good luck” a lot and we really mean it. Everyone of us will need luck and opportunity at some point in our life.

Honorable judges, ladies and gentleman, my fellow debaters., good evening. Our side firmly believes that “live to work” means more to people. First of all, let’s have a look at the definitions of these two words. According to Collins advanced English dictionary, live not only means someone in a particular kind of life, but also means live for something, in order to achieve something in their life. Workit's not just doing a job which can enable us to earn money. It's exerting ourselves by doing mental or physical work for a purpose or out of necessity. Following are some aspects which can support our argument. First of all, work is a source of self-esteem and

satisfaction. We are emotionally dependent on it. Because we live in this world, we have need and desire, so we have to find a way to satisfy our need and desire. Our enthusiastic passion for work enhances our quality of life. Second, living to work is a positive living attitude. Live to work make people keep step to society development and progress. In the case of we are living in a competitive world, a positive attitude of living to work can make us keep pace with the world. Last but not least, only by choosing the attitude of living to work can we be unselfish and do more contribution to our society and environment. On the one hand, it will promote human civilization. On the

Everyone here good evening, Due to the vast majority of students are at school to eat to live, so like televisions, refrigerators, washing machines and other large electronic products and college students' life is not very great. Is closely related to contemporary college students of electronic products mainly include computer, mobile phone, U disk and other small electronic products.
