I am visiting Los Angeles for a couple of days with my friend, and while we were on a hike early this morning, I found the National ID card of a French kid on the path. There was no one around, so I thought it was best to pick it up.

Being French myself, I knew the kid was very nervous after he didn’t find his ID card. Have you ever lost anything, such as an important book, a driver’s license or a passport? Maybe you had the same feeling as the kid.

As soon as we got back to our hotel, I searched for the cardholder’s name (which than kfully was not very common) on the Internet. I then followed a few links until I found his dad, and sent him a direct message along with a photo of the ID card.

He wrote back to me in an hour, very appreciative. It was really fun playing Sherlock Holmes! “The kid’s mom will be picking up the ID card from the hotel’s front desk tomorrow.” I was very happy to see that.

Don’t drive your kids to school. Let them ride a bike to school.

In England 8.3 million children travel to school every day. It is reported that only a small number of pupils cycle to school (under 2%), although one in three children would actually like to.

Experts say that to stay healthy, children need at least one hour of proper exercise every day. But only six out of ten boys and four out of ten girls get that. One of the reasons is that parents have developed a habit of driving their children to school when they could just walk or ride a bike to school.

Teachers often say that children who walk or ride a bike to school are more ready to listen to their classes, ask and answer questions in class than those driven by car, and the school journey is a good chance for children to learn about road safety and other life skills. Also, for many children, riding a bike is more fun than going to school by car.

Most parents know the benefits (益处). Then what’s stopping them from letting their kids ride a bike? Safety is the No.1 worry for them. But actually riding a bike is not as dangerous as parents think it is.

When you decide to buy a bike, you should know that a bike that is too big or too small is dangerous. Don’t try to get a bike that your child will “grow into”. Get the right size in good working order. Generally, 20-inch wheels are on bikes for 5-8 year olds; 24-inch wheels are for 9-11 year olds; 26-inch wheels are suitable for those over 11, and some older children should even take bikes with 28-inch wheels, but the main thing is that the bike fits your child.

( ) 38. Which of the following benefits of cycling to school is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. It will help children keep healthy.

B. It will make children more active

in class.

C. It will make children feel freer.

D. It will be more fun for children. ( ) 39. Parents don’t allow their children to ride a bike to school mainly because ________.

A. they’re worried about their children’s safety

B. their children don’t want

to

C. they don’t know what size bike to choose

D. t hey haven’t enough money to

buy a bike

( ) 40. Generally, what size bike is suitable for a 10-year-old child?

A. A bike with 20-inch wheels

B. A bike with 24-inch wheels

C. A bike with 26-inch wheels

D. A bike with 28-inch wheels ( ) 41.This passage is mainly written for ________.

A. teachers whose students have asked their parents to drive them to school

B. children who have asked their parents to drive them to school

C. parents who drive their children to school

D. parents who drive to work

WI-FI, smartphones and WeChat … the Internet has almost every part of our lives covered. But what’s next?

The answer might be the “Internet of Things” (IoT), a hot topic at the Second World Internet Confer ence held in Wuzhen, Zhejiang in 2015. Experts said at the conference that in five years, there could be 30 to 50 billion IoT devices (设备) connected to and shaping our lives.

What does that mean exactly? Basically, IoT refers to the connection of everyday objects to the Internet and to one another. Everything, from cars to fridges to our houses, can be connected with built-in sensors (内置感应器), chips and software. In the IoT, there will not only be “talks” between humans and machines but also machine-to-machine.

Your fridge will be able to order new food online when it finds out there are no eggs left. Forget to turn off the oven? No problem, use your smartphone to turn it off from anywhere in the world. While driving home, your car could tell your house that you are five kilometers away and to turn on the lights and warm up the house.

In the bigger world, imagine if water and gas pipes could warn your town when there is something wrong. In one word, IoT will make our lives much easier by helping save time, money and energy.

However, like everything else, the IoT has its downsides. Imagine if someone hacked (恶意攻击或篡改) the software of your fridge and made it turn itself off. If your house adjusts the lights according to whether you are at home or not, this information can be useful for thieves. Safety and privacy (隐私性) have always been problems with Internet. IoT needs to solve these problems too.

The “Internet of Things” is sometimes called the “Internet of Everything”. The term was created in 1999 by Kevin Ashton, a British technology pioneer, who also helped develop the IoT c.

If something becomes a part of the IoT, we call it “smart”. Songdo, South Korea, aims to become the first totally wired “smart city” in the world. This means that everything in the city, including people’s homes, government buildings and streets, will be connected to the

Internet. The city is being built.

How many devices have been connected to the IoT? What will things be like in five years? Take a look.

请阅读下面短文,在短文后表格中的空白处填上适当的单词(注意:每空1个单词)。

Happiness has become a big deal in the past 10 years. Hundreds of books, lectures and even the media tell us that happiness is within our reach. All we have to do is to follow some simple steps, like meditation(冥想, 沉思), living in the moment and doing yoga. But if you are going through a really difficult time, none of this may feel right. In fact, feeling deeply sad is a normal part of the healing process(自愈程序).

It is said that if you are going through a hard time, it’s important to do what you can to feel better. Here are some ways that have helped me and many people. Perhaps they can work for you too. Looking at water while in nature can be calming. Being outside is also good. But if you are not anywhere near an ocean, lake or river, looking at images of moving water on TV can also be of help.

Also you can think about the times you were at your happiest. That may sound like a little awkward. But doing this actually sends chemicals to your brain, and it can make you fee l better.

We have to get our happiness where we can find it. If you have lost the ability to find any pleasure in your daily routine or the people around you, something deeper is going on. Think about getting yourself checked out by a medical doctor.

We can’t allow natural and normal emotional low points to rule our lives, but we can’t ignore them either. They must be processed, so we can move on.

我国出台了“二胎”政策,允许一对夫妻生两个孩子。二班的同学对“是否同意父母再生一个”问题遇事可以商量,有开心的事一起分享,有忧虑一起分担。
