1990年，香港某银行根据其客户克尼有限公司的指示开立一张金额为20000美元的信用证。货物是从日本海运到香港的一批手表，允许分运。由于日本到香港的航程很短，在第一批货物的单据到开证行之前，申请人要求开证行出具提取这第一批货物的提货担保，并附上相应的金额为10000美元的赔款保证，申请人在开证行有30000美元的信用额度，所以该行经办合签了一张给船公司的提货担保，允许申请人捉货。一星期后，第一批货物的单据尚未收到，申请人又要求出具提取价值为10000美元的第二批货物的提货担保.由于近洋贸易中，邮寄单据往往需要一星期以后才能到达开证行，再则申情人的信用额度也未突破，因此开证行开出了第二个提货担保。几天后，开证行获悉它的客户尼克有限公司倒闭了，它的董事们都不知去向。之后开证行成收到了第二批单据，但金额是20000美金，且然信用证下只能有这一批货物，根本没有第二批。一个月以后，凭开证行担保而提走二批货物的船公司，声称开证行侵占了价值为20000美元的宝石手表的第二批货物。原来该客户少报了第一批货物的金额，再冒领了不是它的第二批货货物。
这一类围绕提骗取担保的诈骗案件之所以能够得手的主要原因在于，
(1)在未收到单据而出具提货担保时，银行不可能象在收到单据后出担保那样知道货物的详细情况，诸如货物的件数、唛头以及提单的编号等重要内容银行往往不是十分清楚，银行所知道的只是大概的货价和笼统的货名。
(2)行骗的进口商有一定金额的赔偿担保或信托收据，这样就容易给出具担保的开证行造成一个所借单据金额未突破赔偿担保金额的假象。
(3)行骗者往往还利用相同的货名以蒙弊船方，从而提走别人的货物。
防范这类诈骗有效措施有：
(1)开证行在开证时就在信用证中明确规定货物的唛头，在提货担保上打出货物唛头，并应加信用证号码。这样开证申请人就只能提取信用证中所规定的货物，出担保的开证行成不会有很大的风险了。
(2)开证行还可以通过议付行获得货物的详情资料，了解单据是否已被议付，是否真的有这笔货物，以进免受骗。
(3)开证行还可以要求进口商在他的赔偿担保或信托收据中说明承担无限责任，而不是象上述案例中只有一万美元;并且还可要求他提供担保抵押品，或由信誉良好的第三人提供无限责任担保
