绝唱
严阵
我总愿在每年的初冬季节到圆明园去，不是为别的去，就是为了在这个时候，到那里的荷花池去看荷花。不知为什么，我总觉得圆明园的荷花和别处的荷花不一样，它说的话不一样，它做的梦也不一样。
诚然，荷花的绿叶的美是无可比拟的。三四月间，荷花出水，一片浅绿。它浅浅深深的绿叶上凝聚着汪汪点点的水露，在阳光的照射下，宛如透明的翡翠上滚动的几颗珍珠。
这是这一塘荷花最美的时候吗？接天莲叶无穷碧的名句曾被人无数次地吟咏过，的确，我起初曾经以为，这是荷花最美的时候，可是我现在却觉得，也许一切并非如此。
诚然，荷花的红花的美是有口皆碑的。五六月间，花瓣初展，点点新红。它粉粉的，淡淡的，文文的，雅雅的，仿佛永远是十五六岁的年纪，不管在明亮的阳光下或是在轻风细雨中，它婷婷于岸畔又隐隐于水底的那些神秘莫测的艳影，都会使人心醉神迷。
这是一塘荷花最美的时候吗？映日荷花别样红的诗句，人们总是不绝于口。当然，我也曾经认为，满塘红艳是荷花最美的时候，可是，我现在越来越不这么以为了。
既然绿叶不是最美，红花也不是最美，那么荷花到底在什么时候才是最美的呢？
那是一个十多年前的十月，我孤自一个到圆明园，想去寻找那里的残秋，可是当我徜徉于既找不到一片绿叶也找不到一朵红花的荷花池的石岸上，无意之间，我却被蓦然呈现在我面前的另一种景色震撼了，在映满圆明园断石残柱所组成的黑白相间的奇妙图案的水影中间，交织其上的是一池残荷：它有的枯梗还高高的耸立着，有的则已折断在水中；它有的叶子早被秋风撕破，有的卷作黑色的一团，却依然在空中高悬；那些它结下的果实，那些曾是翠绿色或者金
黄色的莲蓬，有的虽然已变成黑色，却依然在空中高举，有的被风雨摧折，成堆地倒伏在水中，却依然守着它自己的根。看到这种景象，看到在圆明园断墙残柱的倒影上，那些由残荷组成的神奇幽秘的大大小小的正方形、三角形、圆圈形、菱形的交相印叠的美丽图案，我顿时感到我走进了一个荷花的神奇的世界。
留得残荷听雨声吗？不，我当时的感觉完全不是这样。我感到这满池的荷花没有枯，没有死，那布满池水的断梗残枝，完全是那一池碧绿一池艳红的最高的升华。从它们以残枝断梗和倒在池水中的莲蓬所组成的各种神秘的图案中间，你可以发现，它不是红红绿绿的俗美，而一种蕴藏于残破枯败之中的那种自信和孤高，那是一种一直展现到生命最后的凄美。它表达着一种力量，一种精神，它不再以绿叶去使人清心，它也不再以红花去使人陶醉，它现在给人们的，是一种不屈的沉默，和圆明园留下的断墙一样，是一种似乎已被摧毁但却永远无法摧毁的象征。因此，我想，这满塘残荷才是圆明园荷池的绝美之处，它是远胜于色远胜于香的一池历尽凄风苦雨的绝唱。
何况，它还有散落满池的莲子呢！隆冬过后，新芽又将破水而出，青青的绿意又将覆盖这片古老的荷池。
不要留得残荷听雨声，还是在风雨声中去听残荷吧！它用生命宣告：只要精神不屈，便谁也摧毁不了你！有些时候，越是摧毁，便越是美丽！
春日的落叶

几场春雨过后，窗外的一排樟树，把有限的空间，染得上下皆是一片新绿了！光润，明丽，枝叶婆娑，更显出春的饱和、春的磅礴、春的生机与活力。
我清楚地记得：开春时那片片叶柄下绽出的萌动着的新芽，渐渐地，它们由嫩绿、油绿，直到眼前的郁郁葱葱、翠色一片了。啊，那原是托着新叶芽的老叶呢？似乎有些干枯、发硬，凋落下来了！
是循着大自然的节奏，它们沉静地飘落下来了；又乘着和煦的春风，轻盈地旋舞、翻飞。它们已经穿过秋的肃穆，冲过冬的沉寂，是在百花斗妍、鸟唱枝头的明媚春光里飘落的，它的液汁都已注进了片片萌动着的新芽。
在绵绵的春雨里，一眼望去，它们竟构成了落“叶”缤纷的世界：徐徐飘落下，稠密如雨，落入地上的泥浆里，来往行人踏上去，化作了尘泥；又一阵风起，又一批落下，地上又铺上厚厚的一层，又一片“零落成泥碾作尘”了。我凝望着眼前的场景，情不自禁地捡起几片新落下的叶子，想细心观察一下它生命将结束时是怎样的颓萎。然而当我触摸到它的叶柄时，竟惊奇地感到它的柔软可亲，叶片上挂满了细雨珠，闪着光泽，片片叶脉清晰，颇具情致。有的展现浓绿，似乎要渗出未尽的汁液；有的已呈淡褐色，显得凝重厚实……我明白了它们遵从那无情的时序，又执著珍爱生命的翠色的毅力与情操！当我低下头来察看那化为春泥的落叶时，竟闻到明明是樟叶的清香，还和着泥土的芬芳！是的，它们的色彩似乎是无绚烂可言的了，然而那“化作春泥更护花”的情思，却使它们如此庄严美丽！
雨后的晴日里，人们拿来几把大扫帚，把干叶积成一堆堆，点燃了。孩子们兴致勃勃地拣根树枝挑逗火头，让它烧得更旺，更透，更彻底。缕缕青烟，缭绕上空，飘散着阵阵樟叶的馨香；叶火熊熊，像是生命最后一道光华，潇洒，璀璨……它们化为灰烬后的归宿呢？我想，仍然是泥土，是大地，用那看不见的汁液，催发又一茬新叶的萌生，它的血脉，会通向那夏的壮盛、秋的丰饶的！
不无遗憾的是春已降临人间而春鸟并未“翔集”，那一排茁壮的樟树后的一棵歪斜的槐树上，却飞过来几只啄木鸟。这一下使人想起曾被人斥过的“檐头麻雀的啁啾”和“啄木鸟的干笑”，实在大煞风景！因为不知道它们是“哪一季的鸟”“通年聒噪”，虽占据枝头，却“一点风雅气都没有”！这远远不能比伴和春风旋舞的落叶，它们虽是在“落”，可那飘飞时的瑟瑟沙沙和燃烧时的毕毕剥剥，该是多么和谐动听，因为那是生命延续、青春复归的奏鸣曲！
有位诗人说得好：“叶，一切都不计较；叶，不与谁争立锥之地。”它凭一腔善良的追求，度过了有花有果的全程。啊！春天的落叶啊！你“欣欣而来，慰慰而去”，“落得辉煌，失得惬意”！

The road to success It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their business lives sweeping out of the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch of business education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself. Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, my advice to you is “aim high”. I would not give a fig for the young man who does not already see himself the partner or the head of an important firm. Do not rest content for a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or foreman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say to yourself, “my place is at the top”. Be king in your dreams. And there is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on the line, to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it. The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they have scattered their brains also. They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here, there, and everywhere. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry too many baskets that break most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman is lack of concentration. To summarize what I have said: aim for the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; never speculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cash fund; make the firm’s interest yours; break orders always to save owners; concentrate; put all your eggs in one basket, and watch that basket; expenditure always within revenue; lastly, be not impatient, for as Emerson says, “no one can cheat you out of ultimate success but yourself.”
