My Hometown—Inner Mongolia

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, today, I would like to introduce my beloved hometown—Inner Mongolia to all of you. It has been 57 years since the birth of the Inne r Mongolia Autonomous Region on May 1st, 1947. Dominated by the Mongolian nationali ty, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is located on the northern frontier of China. T he Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region occupies an area of 1.18 million square kilometers and has a population of about 20 million people who represent a score of different natio nalities. Every time when people talk about Inner Mongolia, they’ll come down to the vas t grassland. Yes, the Inner Mongolian prairie area makes up a quarter of the total grasslan d area of the country. On the boundless expanse of the Inner Mongolian prairie are living numerous sheep, Cattle and horses, on which our Mongolian have lived for generations. That is why the grassland is eul ogized as ―cradle of life‖. There are two vast grasslands i n my hometown—Hulun Buir Grasslands and Xilin Gol Grasslands which are both world-f amous regions. People in Inner Mongolia are famous for their bravery, enthusiasm and ho spitality. No mater where y ou are from, as long as you come to a herdsman’s house, you will be warmly entertained with roasted whole lamb and milk tea, and what’s more, you can also appreciate beautiful Mongolian songs and elegant dances. It is not exaggerating to say Mongolians are born singers and dancers. The moment you set your feet on the gr assland areas you will discover it is indeed a real land of songs and dances.

Today’s Inner Mongolia still maintains her ethnic characteristics and at the dame t ime, she tries to keep pace with the development of the modern world. Ordus is a world wide well-known brand, Yili and Mengniu are both the famous dairy industries, which ha ve greatly improved the living standard of our Mongolian people. And I’m sure, our Mon golian people will make great effort to contribute to our hometown. As a college student, I know quite clearly that my mission is to master solid knowledge and one day do good to my beloved hometown.

I can hadle it

I can never forget the summer in 1996. I went through an extremity of despair d ue to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true. One evening my father came and to ld me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone). Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences ―I tell myself I can handle it .Compared to what others have been through I’m fortunate‖.

Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me. I belived my life w ould mot be that bad and it was proved to be true. Later during my study in the universi ty I always told myself ―I can handle it‖ when my own goals seemed far off or when m y problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to m y senses.

Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school. Whenever my students co mplain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them. I just want to make them believe they can handle their difficulties beca use their circumstances are only bad compared to something better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will build up fortitude.

So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us strength. Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared to what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.

我能挺过去的

我永生难忘1996年的夏天。由于我在高考中的失利，我感到了极度的失望，我要成为一名大学生的梦想似乎是无法实现了。一天傍晚，我的父亲来给我讲了一个关于史蒂文·卡拉汉的故事，史蒂文独自驾驶着帆船横渡大西洋，途中船遇难下沉，但是他却活了下来并在76天后被人发现。（他是世界上遇海滩在救生艇中存活最长时间的人了）。后来卡拉汉在他的叙述中写到―我告诉自己一定可以挺过去的，跟别人的遭遇相比，我已经算是幸运的了‖。

现在我在一所中学教英语，每当学生们报怨学习的困难或是想放弃时，我就给他们讲卡拉汉的故事，我就是想让他们相信他们可以从困难中挺过去的，因为困境都是相对而言的，有些人比我们更不幸，然后他们就会在自己心中建立起永不放弃的信念。

Ladies and Gentlemen, Honorable Judges, Good afternoon.

I come from one of the most lovely and attractive areas of China, the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province and I'd love to say a few words about this area that is so dear to my heart.

Guangdong Province is a magically beautiful wonderland, with endless natural trea sures. The lush and green mountains are inhabited by songbirds and exotic animals; the fa rm land is fertile and productive, providing all of its people with wonderfully nutritious gr ains and all the fruits they need to be healthy and strong. The Pearl River meanders thro ugh the province and eventually comes to our beautiful seashore with crystal clear blue w ater, flourishing with all kinds of different fish and sea creatures. All these natural advant ages help to boost the ever-expanding economy of Guangdong and increase the welfare of its people.

Guangdong is privileged to have such a beautiful landscape, with hundreds of hist orical sites and places of great interest to local people and foreigners alike. Our capital ci ty, Guangzhou, is also known as "the city of flowers". Everywhere you look you will see flourishing plants and blossoming flowers overflowing with vigor.

The people of Guagdong are very friendly to visitors from anywhere. Whoever yo u are and wherever you come from, Guangdong people will greet you with the only lang uage---Guangdong dialect.

Guangdong is also known as the Chinese capital of delicious food. There is an ol d saying that "The only best delicacies are in Guangdong.‖ Food from this province is int ernationally famous. Its variety of tastes, shapes and colors can satisfy even the most refin ed palette. I'm sure, the moment you seat yourself at a Cantonese banquet, your appetite will naturally become keen and eager to taste all the numerous delicacies of the region. H ere are but a few I will mention in passing: steamed fish in ginger sauce, seasoned chick en, drunken shrimp, dance fish balls, fried jellyfish, roast suckling pig or duck, braised cri spy chicken or squab, shark fin soup, moon cakes, refreshments and desert, and so many more. My mouth is watering just at the sound of these wonderful dishes.

I would like you all to know that there is truly nowhere in the world I would rat her live and I invite you all to come discover the hidden treasures of my hometown. I w ould be glad to serve as your personal guide.

Me and my Fears

Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.

About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly

speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to s ay. My fears had paralyzed me.

While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said ―no.‖ I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. ―Look,‖ he said,―We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails，but one who never quits.‖

I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I ma de the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears –and take part in t he competition!

As it turned out, my dear old professor was right. Now, here I am, once again st anding before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most im portantly, I have faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!

老教授是对的。我发挥出了自己的水平，一路杀进了全国总决赛。此时此刻，当我再一次站在了麦克风前，仍然心跳不止，但更重要的是，我终于能够勇敢地面对我的恐惧了，而这已足够了。

Knowledge collaboration and all-round education

Ladies and gentlemen,

We engineering students take it for granted that technology is changing incredibly fast. We are thinking nervously and seriously whether our colleges are failing to provide

a foundation in the skills currently needed in industry. Take my major telecommunications for example. Scientists say that 21st century is a biomedical time, not an electrical time. But without the help of electronic data processing and transformation, biomedical technol ogy alone cannot go too far. Funny enough, the word biomedical itself is just a combinati on of two disciplines. So the interdisciplinary exploitation serves as the critical part for ou r electric and electronics world as well as any other fields to find new way of being.

But the power of knowledge collaboration is certainly not restricted to science and engineering; it is in the full community of learning. Walking around campus I absorbed a reality that there is a seamless web between students from different professional backgro unds. The engineering students are discussing animatedly in a philosophy lecture, speaking passionately in the public speaking club, and looking for sparkling ideas from learning hi story and arts. How wonderful that is! That, ladies and gentleman, is just a significant ste p forward to be well-rounded because once we jump out of the circle we can see the big ger picture.

My friends, I hope that you have already got what university is all about. Please let me end my speech with the Nobel Prize winner Li Zhengdao’s words: ―The realization of the perfect combination of science and engineering, science and arts, technology and h umanity，is the greatest symbol of a university’s success.‖ Thank you.

As two men were about to be sent into prison, the warden let each of them mak e a demand. The American loved smoking, so he wanted three boxes of cigars; while the Jew said all he needed was a telephone to contact with people outside of the prison. Tw o years later, the first out was the American who still had many cigars in his hands and pockets but was crying: ―Give me some matches!‖ Then the Jew walked out, he shook ha nds with the warden and said: ―Thank you for the phone, it made my business increase b y 200%.‖

What do you think of this story? Life today is what you’ve decided years ago, an d so is the future: your decisions today will affect your destiny years later. Now I have t wo things to choose from: to go abroad, to find myself a decent job after graduation or t o further my study as a postgraduate. I haven’t worked out an answer to this question yet, but I know that whatever I do will directly affect my future.

An Indian once said life is just like a game of cards, the cards in your hand repr esent opportunities, while the way you play decides the result you’ll get. Looking back in history, during World War Ⅱ, Churchill who led the British people resolved to expect

―blood, toil, tears and sweat‖. They won the victory then. Today Shenzhou 5 took the firs t Chinese astronaut into space. I am sure that later there’ll be more spacecrafts, like Shen zhou 6,7 and 8 ……

So what does the future look like? No one can tell. But I know the choice is yo urs, the future is now. Make good use of everyday, a man can achieve greater successes, a country can gain prosperity and the whole world can be united, as it has never been be fore.

Seemimgly, it means

a choice of tangible things. But in essence, it means choosing a way of life. Life is to be lived, savored, and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.

Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the grave threat from the l ife-and-death disease--SARS. Yet, even during those dreadful times, some afflicted people remained optimistic. Instead of wearing neutral white masks, some people turned to colouf ul ones, and thus display a happy mood. And some creative people dubbed SARS to mea n "SMILE AND REMAIN SMILING." I was deeply touched by their optimisim, nearly fo rgetting that we're still in a battle. people who survive these kinds of circumstances, (at s ome point)decide in their minds to carry on in spite of the overwhelming odds.

But, encouragingly, we have witnessed some of them striving hard to rebuild confidence toward life and discover new opportunities for demonstrating their values.

Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoid unexpecte d disasters and adversities, we do have the privilege to choose to live optimistcally,to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.

Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approach l ife that day. As for me, I choose to be cheerful.

The House Debates Health Reform-大学生英语演讲范文

Good afternoon, everybody. I just want to say a few words about the landmark vote t hat the House of Representatives is poised to（随时准备着）take today -- a vote that ca n bring us one step closer to making real the promise of quality, affordable（支付得起）health care for the American people.

For the better part of a year now, members of the House and the Senate have been w orking diligently（勤奋地）and constructively to craft legislation that will benefit millions of American families and millions of American businesses who urgently need it. For the first time ever, they've passed bills through every single committee responsible for refor m. They've brought us closer than we have ever been to passing health insurance reform on behalf of the American people.

Now is the time to finish the job. The bill that the House has produced will provide stability and security for Americans who have insurance; quality, affordable options for th ose who don't; and lower costs for American families and American businesses. And as I' ve insisted from the beginning, it is a bill that is fully paid for and will actually reduce our long-term federal deficit（赤字，不足）.

This bill is change that the American people urgently need. Don't just take my word f or it. Consider the national groups who've come out in support of this bill on behalf of t heir members: The Consumers Union supports it because it will create -- and I quote -- "a more secure, affordable health care system for the American people."

The American Medical Association and the American Nurses Association support it on behalf of doctors and nurses and medical professionals who know firsthand what's broken in our current system, and who see what happens when their patients can't get the care t hey need because of insurance industry bureaucracies（官僚政治）.

The National Farmers Union supports this bill because it will control costs for farmers and ranchers（牧场主）, and address the unique challenges rural Americans face when it comes to receiving quality care.

And the AARP supports it because it will achieve the goal for which the AARP has been fighting for decades -- reducing the cost of health care, expanding coverage for Ame rica's seniors, and strengthening Medicare for the long haul.

Now, no bill can ever contain everything that everybody wants, or please every constit uency（选区）and every district. That's an impossible task. But what is possible, what's in our grasp right now is the chance to prevent a future where every day 14,000 America ns continue to lose their health insurance, and every year 18,000 Americans die because t hey don't have it; a future where crushing costs keep small businesses from succeeding an d big businesses from competing in the global economy; a future where countless dreams are deferred or scaled back because of a broken system we could have fixed when we ha d the chance.

What we can do right now is choose a better future and pass a bill that brings us to the very cusp（尖头，尖端）of building what so many generations of Americans have so ught to build -- a better health care system for this country.

Millions of Americans are watching right now. Their families and their businesses are counting on us. After all, this is why they sent us here, to finally confront the challeng es that Washington had been putting off for decades -- to make their lives better, to leav e this country stronger than we found it.

I just came from the Hill where I talked to the members of Congress there, and I re minded them that opportunities like this come around maybe once in a generation. Most public servants pass through their entire careers without a chance to make as important a difference in the lives of their constituents and the life of this country. This is their mom ent, this is our moment, to live up to the trust that the American people have placed in us -- even when it's hard; especially when it's hard. This is our moment to deliver.

I urge members of Congress to rise to this moment. Answer the call of history, and vote yes for health insurance reform for America.
