Paper is different from other waste produce because it comes from a sustainable resource: trees. Unlike the minerals and oil used to make plastics and metals, trees are replaceable. Paper is also biodegradable (可降解的), so it does not pose as much threat to the environment when it is discarded. While 45 out of every 100 tons of wood fibre used to make paper in Australia comes from waste paper, the rest comes directly from virgin fibre from forests and plantations. By world standards this is a good performance since the world-wide average is 33 percent waste paper. Governments have encouraged waste paper collection and sorting schemes and at the same time , the paper industry has responded by developing new recycling technologies that has paved the way for even greater utilization of used fibre. As a result, industry’s use of recycled fibres is expected to increase at twice the rate of virgin fibre over the coming years.

Already, waste paper constitutes 70% of paper used for packaging and advances in the technology required to remove ink from the paper have allowed a higher recycled content in newsprint and writing paper. To achieve the benefits of recycling, the community must also contribute. We need to accept a change in the quality of paper products; for example stationary may be less white and of a rougher texture. There also needs to be support from the community for waste paper collection programs. Not only do we need to make the paper available to collectors but it also needs to be separated into different types and sorted from contaminants(污染物),string and other items.

The four most common sources of paper for recycling are factories and retail stores which gather larger amounts of packaging material in which goods are delivered, also offices which have unwanted business documents and computer output, paper converters and printers and lastly households which discard newspapers and packaging material. Once collected, the paper has to be sorted by hand by people trained to recognize various types of paper. The sorted paper then has to be repulped(再打浆)or mixed with water and broken down into its individual fibres. This mixture is called stock and may contain a wide variety of contaminating materials, particularly if it is made from mixed waste paper which has had little sorting. Various machinery is used to remove other materials from the stock. After passing through the repulping process, the fibres from printed waste paper are grey in color because the printing ink has soaked into individual fibres. This recycled material can only be used in products where the grey color does not matter, such as cardboard boxes but if the grey color is not acceptable, the fibres must be de-inked. This involves adding chemicals , water-hardening agents , frothing agents and bleaching agents. Before the recycled fibres can be made into paper they must be refined or treated in such a way that they bond together.

B isphenol A is a chemical widely used to make hard, polycarbonate (聚碳酸酯)plastic.Food storage containers, reusable water bottles and baby bottles are among the many different products that may contain BPA.BPA is also commonly used in protective coverings inside metal food and drink cans.

People can swallow small amounts of BPA as they eat or drink. An industry Web site says more than forty years of safety research shows that products made with bisphenol A are safe. But others question the safety of BPA.Now, a large study has linked it to diabetes and heart disease in adults.

Researchers divided almost one thousand five hundred American adults into four groups based on BPA levels in their urine (尿液).All the levels were within the limits considered safe by the United States Food and Drug Administration.Yet the study found that the highest group was more than twice as likely as the lowest group to have heart disease or diabetes, or both.

The Food and Drug Administration and chemical industry officials said the study does not show that bisphenol A caused the diseases. The researcher who led the study, David Melzer at England’s University of Exeter, agrees. He says the findings must be reproduced and that other studies are also needed.

But he also says that if BPA is a cause of these conditions, then just reducing contact with it might prevent some cases. The study appeared last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Earlier this month, the United States government scientists from the National Toxicology Program released a final report on BPA.They found that the chemical is of ―some concern‖ for effects on development of the brain in fetuses (胎儿), infants and children. They made the same finding for behavioral (动作的)effects.

The scientists based their findings mostly on studies of laboratory animals.Even so, the program director said ―the possibility that BPA may affect human development cannot be dismissed.‖

In April, Canada became the first country to propose a ban on plastic baby bottles that contain BPA.The government has said it will publish its final decision by October eighteenth.

Some plastic goods are now being marketed as BPA-free.But some people wonder

New discoveries suggest that trade between Europe and Asia along the Silk Road probably began many centuries earlier than once thought. The findings add a fascinating new page to the epic(史诗)of the Silk Road, which spread far and wide in no time.

The latest and most surprising discovery is pieces of silk found in the hair of an Egyptian mummy from about l,000 BC, long before regular traffic on the Silk Road and at least one thousand years before silk was previously thought to be used in Egypt. Other research may extend human activity along this route back even further, perhaps a million years to the moving of human ancestors into eastern Asia.

The official origin of East-West trade along the road is usually placed in the late 2nct century BC when an agent of the Chinese Emperor Wu-di returned from a dangerous secret mission(使命)across the desert into the remote high country of Central Asia. The agent, Zhang Qian, traveled as far as Afghanistan and brought back knowledge of even more distant lands such as Persia, Syria and a place known as Lijien, perhaps Rome. Historians have called this one of the most important journeys in ancient times. His journey opened the way for what have been thought to be the first indirect contacts between the ancient world's two superpowers, China and Rome. Chinese silk, first traded to Central Asia for war horses, was soon finding its way to the markets of Rome through a network of businessmen.

But the new discoveries show that Chinese silk apparently existed in the West long before the Han emperor started organized trade over the Silk Road. The research could change thinking about the early history of world trade and provide insights(了解)into the mystery of just how and when Europe first realized the glorious culture at the other end of

体裁:议论文词数:337 建议阅读时间:9分钟难度:★★Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?

In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.

Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. T o survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.

In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.

Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.

In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship

with others.

In a society, such as the United States or Canada, which has many national, religious and cultural differences, people highly value individualism--the difference among people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students don't memorize information. Instead, they work individually and find answers themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.

In most Asian societies, by contrast, people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of Asia reflects society’s belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan, and Korea often work together and help one another in assignments. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students recite rules of information that they have memorized.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example, one advantage to the system in Japan is that there much more math and science than American students learn by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage.Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.

The advantage of the educational system in North American, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values

creative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they haven’t memorized as many basic rules and facts a s students in other countries have.

Hearing a child say their first word is magical moment. Children are eager to learn, and the more they are encouraged, the more they will try. Giving children encouragement and finding different ways to enhance(增强) speech development can greatly build their vocabulary. Here are some tips on how to encourage speech development:

Early encouragement

It is essential to speak to a child from their newborn stage. By speaking to babies

early on, they will gain a better understanding of language. Pronounce words clearly

so that children can grasp the spoken word. This will help them learn to speak.

Positive words

Children engage(参与) more when it is fun and interesting, and when their efforts are acknowledged. Be positive by giving recognition when new words are learned, and emphasize(强调) how exciting these moments are. Positiveness goes for with children, and is advantageous to their self-esteem and development. When a word is spoken that isn’t completely clear or is mispronounced, it should be repeated clearly. Never pay too much attention to mistakes, and instead strengthen correct pronunciation by repeating the word directly after the child.

Reading

A fun way to encourage speech development is by sharing books with children. Reading aloud to a child introduces them to new words and ideas. Books can be read in an

engaging way to capture young minds and this draws them into the story.

Singing

Children are often enticed(吸引) by music, as it grabs their attention and attracts their interest. Singing nursery rhymes will often encourage speech development, as children tend to be able to learn and memorize the words when sung. There are many different nursery rhymes that make youngsters smile. When learning is fun and engaging, children show more interest and absorb more information. Singing is a great way to encourage speech development.

Communication

Always make eye contact when speaking to a child to hear how the words are pronounced. Use key words several times to emphasize these words. Repetition is important to help encourage speech development. Facial expressions and gestures, as well as tones are just as important to provide understanding. Acknowledge their efforts and attempts to speak, and repeat words slowly to allow them to follow the mouth movements. Make sure that you discuss events as they point to objects and say what they are. Children will carefully listen and absorb all of the information they are given.

Listening to speak and communicate with others is very important and a fun journey for the child. Every parents adores the sound of their baby babbling(牙牙学语)and looks forward to their first words. But this development does not happen by accident and

Mountaineers can be a pretty tough crowd—and among them the British Joe Simpson has legendary status. In 1985, Simpson set out to climb Siula Grande in South America. Shortly after he reached the peak, Simpson fell through an overhanging ledge of snow and broke his leg. At this altitude a broken leg means almost certain death, but Simpson somehow managed to drag himself across fields of ice and stone until he reached base camp eight kilometers away. He chose immediate goals, such as reaching a nearby rock, and then gave himself a time limit to get there. Over and over again Simpson broke the main task down into smaller goals.

Break your main task into smaller goals. This is often the key to a successful plan to achieve challenging objectives that seem to be ―mission impossible‖.

Language learning, similar to mountain climbing to some extent, is a daunting task facing most language learners. However, learning from the a bove story, we can apply Simpson’s method to language study. My top tips for designing a study plan are as follows:

1. Understand what kind of learner you are.

Some people are ―visual learners‖ and remember best by seeing pictures and visualizing things i n their mind; others are ―auditory‖ and are happy to learn by listening; ―kinesthetic‖ learners tend to learn by doing things and experience.

2. Realize your own competence.

What are your strengths and weaknesses? Which skill or skills are you going to improve most? Allocate your time to each skill appropriately. It is better to do a little every day than try to ―cram‖ lots in a short space of time.

3. Write down your plan on a calendar.

Decide which skill and what area you are going to practice each day. More importantly, your plan should be specific and practical. Once you have a clear goal in your mind, write it down on your calendar. Each day you should carry out your plan according to your schedule. Do not delay or make up any excuses because you fail to complete your daily task.

Studying is like climbing a mountain and you should take one step at a time. At first sight, a mountain may seem extremely high and it is impossible for you to reach its peak. However, when you set out to climb it step by step you will find that it is not so difficult as you think. Similarly, it is also true in language learning. You can improve your language skills in each aspect step by step. Don’t be frightened by the seemingly hard task. Break it into smaller goals and you will fulfill your dream.

When Percy Spencer invented the microwave, it changed the world greatly. People would no longer have to wait endless hours while cooking their food in an old-fashioned oven. Instead, using the microwave has allowed them to cook food in just seconds.

According to the medical website https://www.sodocs.net/doc/0011386784.html,, just about ―ninety percent of Americans have microwaves in their homes‖. However, is this conv enient invention as perfect as it seems?

There are many reports of microwaves changing the original qualities of the food, which can cause cancer as well as changes in the body.

―Electro-magnetic (电磁的) radiation harms food, and changes substances cooked in it to dangerous products,‖ Dr. Lita Lee – chemist, nutritionist, author and lecturer – wrote in her book, Health Effects of Microwave Radiation – Microwave Ovens (1991).

However, the microwave is not only for food; microwaves are used in medicine as well. For example, it warms heating pads and used to warm blood used in transfusions (输血). Norma Levitt, a hip surgery patient in an Oklahoma hospital (1991), died after blood being heated for her transfusion was altered in the microwave. A lawsuit followed and because of this incident, blood is no longer heated in the microwave.

Regardless of what has happened, big companies still claim that microwaves are great machines that have caused trouble to ―few people‖ and have had ―few consequences‖. However, people should decide if saving a few minutes is more important than preventing cancerous cells from entering the body.

Dr. Jonathan Wright, Medical Director of T ahoma Clinic in Renton, Washington, considers the microwave unhealthy and recommends some alternatives.

―Try eating a lot of your food, like vegetables, uncooked. Ideally, at least one-third of the food in your diet should be uncooked, since this is the form that will give you the maximum amount of nutrients. If you do want to cook some food or heat up leftovers, use your stove (火炉),‖ he said.

These alternative cooking styles may take a little time from your day, but can help you lead a healthier and more stable lifestyle. These methods will allow you to get the most nutrients from your food, as well.

Health is not valued till sickness comes. In today’s fast-paced modern world, we should

The Auto Show, which is being held right now in Beijing, has risen to the top ranks of global auto industry events, as China has become the world's biggest auto market. For many Chinese youngsters, having a car has become a new lifestyle reflecting freedom and success.

First, there is the thrill of individual mobility and freedom, going from one place to another in their own time, and on their own terms.

"I like the speed; I like the freedom; I can't imagine not having a car," Hou Mingxin, 39, owner of two cars, told the Financial Times.

And these youngsters don't just want freedom through car ownership, but also a larger social circle. Thanks to the Internet, car owners can band together for leisure activities, such as going strawberry picking in the countryside. It is an activity that many car lovers would never have attempted without the benefits of a car.

In China, the car is also a status symbol."It's an opportunity to declare personal success," said Michael Dunne, a Shanghai-based managing director of J.D.Power and Associates, an auto industry group."The small, environmentally-friendly models are not best sellers in China. The Chinese are crazy about big cars, a symbol of achievement," said Dunne.

Thanks to a growing middle-class, and an increasingly developed network of roads, the number of car owners in China is rapidly increasing. China last year replaced the US and became the world's largest car market with 13.6 million vehicles sold.

But the car craze(狂热) has raised environmental and traffic concerns. Many worry that car emissions could take pollution to a new level. Heavy traffic also troubles many

Chinese cities.

China is discovering the romance of the road just as developed countries seem to have lost it. ―The younger generation in mature markets is unwilling to buy cars, especially in Europe and Japan," says Klaus Paur, of TNS Auto in Shanghai.

In developed countries, owning a car can be expensive, with the parking fees car insurance and various taxes, said a 2008 article in US magazine Newsweek.

"Having a car is so 20th century," Kimiyuki Suda, a young white collar worker from Tokyo told Newsweek. He mostly uses subways and trains."It's not inconvenient at all."

Attitude is a mental state relative to what we believe and affects our entire lives. We express our attitude in our words and actions.

One of the most important steps you can take toward achieving your greatest potential in life is to learn to monitor your attitude and its impact on your work performance, relationships and everyone around you.

In truth, people generally don’t have a high level of attitude awareness. They’ll know if they are hungry or if their feet hurt, but they usually don’t have a good handle on their attitude. That is a mistake because attitude decides everything. It governs the way you perceive (感知) the world and the way the world perceives you.

We all have a choice. We can choose an inner dialogue of self-encouragement and self-motivation. It’s a power we all have. Each of us experiences hard times, hurt feelings, heartach e, and physical and emotional pain. The key is to realize it’s not what happens to you that matters; it’s how you choose to respond.

Your mind is a computer that can be programmed. Your inner dialogue is the software that programs your attitude, which determines how you present yourself to the world around you. You have control over the programming. Whatever you put into it is reflected in what comes out. The sad reality of life is that we will continue to hear negative

information, but we don’t have to pro gram it into our brains.

The loudest and most influential voice you hear is your own inner voice. It can work for

or against you, depending on the messages you allow. It can be optimistic or pessimistic

(悲观的). It can wear you down or cheer you up.

Habitual bad attitudes are often the product of past experiences and events. Common causes include low self-esteem, stress, fear, resentment, anger and an inability to handle change. It takes serious work to examine the roots of a harmful attitude, but the rewards of ridding ourselves of this heavy baggage can last a lifetime.

Here are several strategies to improve your attitude:

Enthusiasm—Vital Tool for Staying Motivated

Enthusiasm is to attitude what breathing is to life. Enthusiasm makes it possible for you

to apply your gifts more effectively. Enthusiasm means putting yourself in motion. It’s an internal spirit that speaks through your actions.

Lighten Up Your Life with Humor

Humor is a powerful motivator. The more humor and laughter in your life, the less stress you’ll have, which means more positive energy to help you put your attitude into action. There are also health benefits to lightening up.

Exercising Will Help Keep You Motivated

One of the best ways to move to a more positive and motivated mind is to exercise. A regular exercise routine can provide relatively quick positive feedback in the form of weight loss, muscle development and a sense of doing something positive for yourself.

Seek your personal and professional success by using the tools above. It is no secret that

life seems to reward us most when we approach the world with a positive attitude.

Good communication is vital in modern society. We know that much of the communication is unspoken. Consciously(有意识地) or unconsciously, we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces, bodies and attitudes. Your good qualities can make good communication. The personal qualities include: physical appearance, energy, rate of speech, pitch and tone of voice, gestures, expressiveness of eyes, and the ability to hold the interest of others.

What should we do so that our communication will be effective? Here are my suggestions.

Firstly, you should be yourself. The trick is to be consistently(一致地,始终如一地)you, at your best. The most effective people never change character from one situation to another. They’re the same whether they’re having a conversation with their close friends, addressing their garden club or being interviewed for a job. They communicate with their whole being.

Secondly, wheth er you’re talking to one person or one hundred, always remember to look at them. Don’t break eye contact while talking. As you enter a room, move your eyes comfortably, then look directly at those in the room and smile. This shows clearly that you are at ease. Smiling is important. The best type of smile and eye contact is gentle and comfortable, not forced.

You should also absorb other people before showing yourself. You can’t learn anything when you talk. When you attend a meeting, a party or an interv iew, don’t immediately start throwing your opinions. Stop for a second. Absorb what’s going on. What’s the mood of the others—are they down, up, happy, expectant? Are they eager to learn from you, or do they show resistance? If you can sense what’s happeni ng with others, you will be better able to reach them. So, listen before you talk.

The fourth suggestion is that you focus your energy. How do you get your energy up? Before the meeting, collect your thoughts about the goal of the meeting—yours and the other’s. Once you go through the doorway, no longer think about yourself. Focus on the person you are meeting to find out what he is interested in. Properly collected energy comes across when we sincerely believe something. When you speak with energy, you are involved with your audience and your message. You create an air of certainty. The audience may disagree with you, but they can’t question your belief.

Lastly, I would like to remind you that you should lighten up. Take a good hard look at your self. Do you say ―I‖ too often? Are you only concentrated on your own problems? Do you complain frequently? If you answered yes to even one of these questions, you need to be more relaxed.

The fast day would be a busy one. I should call to me all my dear friends and look long into their faces, imprinting(刻上) upon my mind the outward evidences of the beauty that is within them, I should let my eyes rest, too, on the face of a baby, so that I could Catch a vision of the eager, innocent beauty which precedes the individual's consciousness of the conflicts which life develops. And I should like to look into the loyal, trusting eyes of my dogs--the serious, clever little Scottie, Darkie, and the strong, understanding Great Dane, Helga, whose warm, tender, and playful friendships are so comforting to me. On that busy first day I should also view the small simple things of my home. I want to see the warm colors in the carpets under my feet, the pictures on the walls, the lovely small furniture that transforms a house into home. My eyes would rest respectfully on the books in dot-raised type which I have read, but they would be more eagerly interested in the printed books which seeing people can read, for during the long night of my life the books I have read and those which have been read to me have built themselves into a great shining lighthouse, showing me the deepest channels of human life and the human spirit. In the afternoon of that first seeing day, I should take a long walk in the woods and intoxicate (使陶醉) my eyes on the beauties of the world of Nature trying desperately to absorb in a few hours the vast brilliance which is presenting itself to those who can see. On the way home from my woodland trip, my path would lie close to a farm so that I might see the patient horses ploughing in the field and the peaceful content of men living close to the soil. And I should pray for the glory of a colorful sunset. When dusk had fallen, I should experience the double delight of being able to see by artificial light which the genius of man has created to extend the power of his sight when Nature brings darkness. In the night of that first day of sight, I should not be able to sleep, so full would be my mind of the memories of the day!

一般疑问句由Yes 或 No 来回答,而特殊疑问句由疑问词what,who,where,why,when,which 和how 引出,回答时需完成疑问词所指的对象。选择疑问句是会提出两种或两种以上的情况, 结构中会用连词“or”连接。回答时,要求学生必须选择其中一种情况作答,答案用短语或陈述句句式写出。比如“Is he a teacher or a student? ”答案是“He is a teacher.”或“ He is a student.”

Some of the apps provide the latest information about areas hit by the virus, while others collect data on infected persons. The Chinese government is working with two of the country’s largest technology companies to keep track of the disease. The two, Alibaba Group and Tencent Holdings, created color-based systems that record the health of individuals and identify carriers of the coronavirus. In February, Alipay, a payment app operated by Alibaba, released a system that uses colored QR Codes to show the health of people in the city of Hangzhou. A QR code is a sign a smartphone can read with its camera. Once the sign is recognized, the phone takes the user directly to an internet link with information about a subject. After completing the questionnaire, users receive a mobile phone message. It includes a color-based QR Code that relates to the health situation they described. Users with a red code are told to quarantine themselves for 14 days and continue reporting their condition by using Alibaba’s DingTalk messaging app. Users with a yellow code are told to stay in quarantine for 7 days, while those with a green code can travel freely. Chinese state media said the Alibaba system would be deployed at train stations, along major roads and other travel checkpoints. They added that the system is also being used in some neighborhoods. People are asked to show QR Codes when entering their apartment buildings. Customers are asked to do the same before entering the local supermarket. Alipay said it was working with the government to expand the system nationwide. Tencent, which operates China’s popular messaging app WeChat, reported the launch of a similar QR Code-based tracking system. Tencent developed the system with help from China’s National Development and Reform Council, which is currently in use in the southern city of Shenzhen. Officials said they expected it to be deployed to other parts of Guangdong province soon. Even before the latest systems were announced, many Chinese were already using mapping and travel apps in an effort to avoid areas with coronavirus infections. One of the apps, developed by WeChat, uses official reports to identify places in the cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou where coronavirus cases have been confirmed.
