Part Ⅰ Reading Comprehension (共20小题,每小题2分,共40分)

Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by

some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, D. You should decide the best choice and mark the corresponding

letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage 1

Modern mass-production methods lower the cost of making goods, and thus give us better values. At the same time, American ingenuity and science are constantly at work improving the quality of products. In this way, better quality products at good values are continually being brought to the people of all income groups.

As an example of how this works, when facial tissues were first put on the market in 1924, they were made in limited quantities and sold at 65 cents per box of 200. People liked these facial tissues immediately and began asking for them when they went into different stores. Because there was such a demand for the product, manufacturers began making tissues in larger and larger quantities. Because the manufacturers were making tissues in greater quantities, their production costs were lowered, so that the cost of tissues went down. In the meanwhile, the quality of facial tissues was constantly improved because more manufacturers went into the business of making tissues and each manufacturer strove to make his product better than his competitors. Today, instead of costing 65 cents, a box of 200 facial tissues costs around one-third of that price, and they are both softer and stronger.

When people are free to compete—when they are free to make more things and make them better—everyone benefits.

Passage 2

It is true that times are changing for the old people in Britain. But not all the changes are bad ones. Modern medicine, for example, has made old people healthier than ever before. Another advantage is that there are many more old people than there used to be. This means that old people often have a good social life with their own clubs and organizations. Old people, too, have more money now than their own parents and grandparents had.

The biggest disadvantage of modern life is loneliness. The young leave home when they grow up and many old people live alone. Fewer old people have brothers and sisters. An old person’s one or two children may have moved to another part of the country. Even when they live nearby, the young people have their own work to do and their own children to look after. They have not much time for the old. Problems of loneliness often start

when people stop work. When people retire they often find it difficult to start a new life without their jobs.

The world has changed so fast since 1900 that it is difficult for old people to understand the problems of the young. And the world is changing even faster these days than it was fifty years ago. It makes you thin, doesn’t it? What will it be like when today’s young people are old?

6. To the old people, the changes in society are _________.

A. better than they expected

B. not as good as they wish

C. both good and bad

D. difficult to understand

7. According to this passage, the old people today_____.

A. often go to clubs with their brothers and sisters

B. prefer lonely life to social life

C. live more happily than their parents and grandparents

D. like to share their feeling and thoughts with other people

8. Although some old people live near their sons or daughters, _________.

A. they still feel lonely

B. they want to move to other places

C. they have no time to look after the young people’s children

D. they like to live with their own brothers and sisters

9. In the last century, old people did not have so many problems because_______.

A. they had big families

B. they lived with their children

C. the young were kind to the old

D. the society didn’t change so rapidly

10. What is the main idea of this passage?

A. Modern society only belongs to the young.

B. Modern life has brought new problems to the old.

C. Today’s young people are happier than their parents.

D. It is necessary to take better care of the old people.

Passage 3

One of the most authoritative voices speaking to us today is, of course, the voice of the advertisers. It shouts at us from the television screens and the radio loudspeakers; waves to us from every page of the newspaper; signals to us from the roadside bill-boards all day and flashes messages to us in colored lights at night.

Advising has been among England’s biggest growth industries since the war. Perhaps the reason is that advertising saves the manufacturers from having to think about the customer.

At the stage of designing and developing a product, there is quite enough to think about without worrying over whether anybody will want to buy it. The designer is busy enough without adding customer-appeal to all his other problems of man-hours and machine tolerances and stress factors. So they just go ahead and make the thing and leave it to the advertiser to find clever ways of making it appeal to purchasers after they have finished it, by pretending that it confers(赋予) status, or attracts love, or signifies manliness.

Other manufacturers find advertising saves them from changing their product. And manufacturers hate change. The ideal product is one that goes on unchanged forever. If, therefore, for one reason or another some alteration seems called for—how much better to change the image, the packet or the pitch made by the product, rather than go to all the inconvenience of changing the product itself.

11. Which of the following can best describe the author’s attitude toward modern advertising?

A. Indifferent.

B. Shocked.

C. Disappearing

D. Approving

12. According to the author, which is NOT the designer’s chief concern when he designs

a product?

A. Stress factors.

B. Man-hours.

C. Machine tolerance

D. Customer-appeal

13. It is stated in the passage that those responsible for giving a product customer-appeal are_____.

A. customers

B. designers

C. advertisers

D. manufacturers

14. According to the author, when some change in a product is necessary, a manufacturer will choose to _________.

A. lower the production cost

B. hire a better designer

C. improve its quality

D. alter its images

15. The best title for the passage might be_______.

A. Advertising since the War

B. Advertising and Manufacturers

C. Advertising—England’s Biggest Industry

D. Advertising and Purchasers

Passage 4

Some people say that the best way to reduce the body’s mid-section is to do stomach exercise. Many people believe that when specific muscles are exercised, the fatty tissues in the immediate area are “burned up”. The truth is that exercise burns fat from all over the body and not from one specific area, no matter what kind of exercise. Of course, if you reduce the fat throughout your body, you will certainly see results around your waist too.

It is said that you need to exercise only twice a week in order to keep a sufficient level of physical fitness. Studies conducted by American scientists show that unexercised muscles lose their strength very quickly. After 48 to 72 hours, you must use the muscles again to reestablish the good physical effects. And what does that mean to you? American scientists concluded that while daily exercise is most helpful, every other day, three days a week will keep a sufficient level of physical fitness.

Is it true that you burn more calories running one mile than walking the same distance? The answer is no. The truth is that you use the same amount of energy whether you walk or run a mile, since in both cases you are moving the same weight the same distance. The speed does not matter. Of course, if you run rather than walk for 30 minutes, you will cover more distance, and therefore burn more calories.

If your breathing doesn’t return to normal within minutes after you finish exercising, you have exercised too much. Five minutes or so after exercising your breathing should be normal, your heart shouldn’t be beating, and you shouldn’t be exhausted.

16. If you want to reduce your fat in a specific part, you________.

A. should exercise all the muscles of your body

B. should exercise that specific part of your body

C. should do stomach exercises

D. can do any kind of exercise

17. According to the text, a proper way to keep a sufficient level of physical fitness is that you need to________.

A. exercise any half of the week

B. exercise any two days of the week

C. exercise every other day, three days a week

D. exercise three days a week at most

18. The third paragraph mainly tells us that__________.

A. you will lose more weight running one mile than walking the same distance

B. you will use more energy walking one mile than running the same distance

C. for the same distance the faster you walk, the more energy you will use

D. whether you run one mile or walk the same distance, you use the same energy

19. You can not judge whether you have exercised too much or not by_________.

A. your breathing

B. your heart beating

C. your exercising time

D. whether you are exhausted

20. What can you learn from this text about the best method to keep fit?

A. Do more running than walking every day of the week.

B. Exercise regularly, every other day of the week.

C. The more exercises you do, the healthier you will be.

D. In order to lose weight, you’d better walk faster.

there are four choices. Choose the one that best fits into the passage and then

mark your answer on the answer sheet.

It is interesting to observe the way in (61) children so often react against their parents’ ideas, while at the same time (62) their parents’ characteristics. That is to say, the children grow up to (63) different views from their parents, yet to have (64) personalities. There is a (65) going on in the toy world at present over whether children should be (66) to have war toys. I do not believe in encouraging war toys, but I don’t see any (67) in forbidding them I when I think of the (68) of my friend Henry.

Henry is the (69) of strict parents who were totally opposed to war. He was never allowed toy soldiers (70) a boy, never allowed guns.

Henry grew up and went into the army, becoming a first-class soldier and (71) all sorts of military honors in a rather fierce unit. He became the opposite in (72) way of what his parents might have expected (73) their son. And yet there is a gentleness about Henry which shows a (74) personality. There is a sympathetic element about the man which I can see (75) have come from his family. In (76) of doing things differently from our parents, a lot of the spirit gets passed on.

Parents in all conscience have to (77) their children what they believe to be right. Perhaps the (78) way to teach one’s child gentleness is (79) forbid toy guns, but to be gentle in one’s (80)everyday life.

江苏专转本英语真题及答案

江苏省2012 年普通高校专转本统一英 语考试 第一卷(共100 分) Part I Reading Comprehension(共20 题,每题 2 分,共40 分) Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. American researchers have developed a technique that may become an important tool in fighting AIDS. The technique stops the AIDS virus from attacking its target-cells in the body's defense system. When AIDS virus enters the blood, it searches for blood cells called T4 lymphocytes (淋巴细胞). The virus connects to the outside of T4 lymphocytes, then forces its way inside. There it directs the cells' genetic (基因的)material to produce copies of the AIDS virus. This is how AIDS spreads.Researchers think they may be able to stop AIDS from spreading by preventing virus from connecting to T4 cells. When AIDS virus finds a T4 cell, it actually connects to a part of the cell called CD4 protein.Researchers want to fool the virus by putting copies or clones of the CD4 protein into the blood. This way the AIDS virus will connect to the cloned protein instead of the real ones. Scientists use the genetic engineering methods to make the clones. Normally a CD4 protein remains on the T4 cell at all times. The AIDS virus must go to it.In a new technique, however, the cloned CD4 protein is not connected to a cell. It floats freely, so many more can be put into the blood to keep the AIDS virus away from real CD4 proteins on T4 cells. One report says the AIDS virus connects to the cloned proteins j ust as effectively as to real protein. That report was based on tests with blood cells grown in labs. The technique is just now beginning t o be tested in animals. If successful, it may be tested in humans within a year. 1. The new technique can ________. A. cure AIDS B. kill the AIDS virus C. prevent the AIDS virus from spreading D. produce new medicines for AIDS 2. When the AIDS virus enters the blood, it is reproduced by ________. A. the inside of the virus itself B. any blood cells in the body C. the CD4 protein D. the genetic material of T4 cells 3 The AIDS virus connects to cloned proteins instead of to the real ones because ________. A. the cloned proteins stay on the T4 cells B. the cloned proteins can float freely in the blood C. it connects to cloned proteins more effectively than to the real ones D. the cloned proteins are made by genetic engineering methods 4. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. The new technique has been tested in labs. B. The new technique is being tested in animals. C. The new technique may be tested in humans. D. The new technique is now under clinical test. 5 Which of the following could be the best title of this passage? A. AIDS---a Fatal Disease. B. A New Technique in fighting AIDS. C. Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the Answer Sheet. Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: Animals react to the changing seasons with changes in mood and behavior and human beings are no exception. Most people find they eat and sleep slightly more in winter and dislike the dark mornings and short days. For some, however, symptoms (症状) are severe enough to damage their lives and to cause considerable stress. These people are suffering from SAD. The symptoms tend to start from around September each year lasting until April, but are at their worst in the darkest months. The standard figure says that around 2% of people in Northern Europe suffer badly, with many more (10%) putting up with milder symptoms. Across the world the incidence (发生率) increases with distance from the equator (赤道), except where there is snow on the ground, when it becomes less common. More women than men are found having SAD. Children and young people can also suffer from it. The problem stems from the lack of bright light in winter. Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, although the exact means by which sufferers are affected is not yet known. As the cause is lack of bright light, the treatment is to be in bright light every day by using a lightbox or a similar bright treatment. (Going to a brightly-lit climate, whether skiing or somewhere hot, is indeed a cure). The preferred level

Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the answer sheet. Passage One Questions 1~5 are besed on the following passage. Young Koreans are beginning to do it alone when it comes to finding a partner, though matchmaking is still the most common way for boys to meet girls. Professional matchmakers can make thousands of American dollars by introducing suitable marriage partners to each other, but partners also play a role in the process during which young Koreans meet. In Confucius Korea, where marriage is regarded as more of a business contract than a sacred thing, the scene of the first meeting is repeated hundreds of times a day in coffee shops in the main hotels around Seoul. The business of continuing the family lineage (血统)and keeping the blooding pure is often too important to be left to romance and chance encounters. Often, the girl will work out a system of secret signals with her mother, from which her parents can tell if she is interested. For example, if the girl orders a coffee it might mean that she wants her parents to leave her alone with the boy, while a milk shows that she wants them to stay. Sometimes the matchmaking is not always so formal, with the introduction being made by friends. But whether through friends or families, there is hardly a Korean man in the country who has not gone through this process --- sometimes six or seven times. 1. The word “matchmaking” in the passage means ____. A. a very formal ritual(仪式)attended by boys and girls B. introducing boys and girls to know each other for the purpose of marriage C. producing matches to make a fire or light a cigarette D. arranging games between men and women 2. The fact that the first meeting is repeated again and again in coffee shops in the main hotels suggests that ____. A. Koreans like drinking coffee in coffee shops very much B. men and women want to meet as many times as possible C. they are busy with communicating with different people D. marriage is seen as a business contract instead of something sacred

2017年江苏省专转本英语模拟试题第七套(含答案)

2017年江苏省专转本英语模拟试题7 Part Ⅰ Reading Comprehension (共20小题,每小题2分,共40分) Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, D. You should decide the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage 1 Modern mass-production methods lower the cost of making goods, and thus give us better values. 1.According to the passage, we know the word “tissue”(Para. 2, Line 1) means “” . A. cell B. soft paper C. organization D. thin fiber 2. When the demand for facial tissues increased, the supply________. A. was not stopped B. became more competitive C. remained unchanged
