Each of us fails from time to time. If we are wise, we accept these failures as a necessary part of the learning process. But all too often we convey to our children either by words or by actions that failure is something to be ashamed of, that nothing but top performance meets our approval.

Donnie was my youngest third-grader. His fear of failure kept him from classroom games that other children played excitedly. He seldom answered questions ---he might be wrong. He seldom finished his work because he repeatedly checked with me to be sure he hadn’t made a mistake.

I tried my best to build his self-confidence. But nothing changed until midterm, when Mary Anne, a student teacher, was assigned to our classroom. She was young and pretty, and she loved children. My pupils, Donnie included, admired her. But even enthusiastic, loving Mary was ba ffled by this little boy who feared he might make a mistake.

Then one morning we were working math problems. Donnie had copied the problems with painstaking neatness and filled in answers for the first row. Pleased with his progress, I left the children with Mary. But when I returned, Donnie was in tears. He’d mi ssed the third problem.

Mary looked at me in despair. Suddenly her face brightened. From the desk we shared, she got a canister (小筒) filled with pencils.

“Look, Donnie,” she said, “I’ve got something to show you.” She removed the pencils and placed them on his desk. “See these pencils, Donnie?” she continued. “They belong to Mrs. Lindstrom and me. See how the erasers are worn? That’s because we make mistakes

too. Lots of them. But we erase the mistakes and try again. That’ what you must learn to do, too.”

She kissed him and continued, “I’ll leave one of these pencils on your desk so you’ll remember that everybody makes mistakes, even teachers.” Donnie looked up with love in his eyes and just a glimmer (少许) of a smile.

The pencil became Donnie’s prized possession. That, together with Mary Anne’s frequent encouragement and praise for even Donnie’s small successes, gradually persuaded him that it’s all right to make mistakes ---as long as you erase them and try again.

For some people, music is no fun at all. About four percent of the population is what scientists call “amusic.” People who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes (音调). Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two songs. Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are very far apart on the musical scale.

As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their inability to enjoy music sets them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to grasp what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify this unusual condition.

Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complex, and it doesn’t involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can’t see certain colors.

Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed. For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a nam e for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say, ‘No thanks, I’m amusic,’” says Margaret. “I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy.”

24. Which of the following is true of amusics?

A. They can easily tell two different s ongs apart.

B. Their situation is well understood by musicians.

C. Listening to music is far from enjoyable for them.

D. They love places where they are likely to hear music.

25. Ac cording to Paragraph 3, a person with “defective hearing” is probably one who

__________.

A. has a hearing problem

B. can hear anything nonmusical

C. dislikes listening to speeches

D. lacks a complex hearing system

26. What is the passage mainly concerned with?

A. Amusics’ strange behaviours.

B. Some people’s inability to enjoy music.

C. Musical talent and brain structure.

D. Identification and treatment of amusics.

One of the Queen’s closest relatives and oldest friends was allowed to give a deep description into the family life of the Royals. Although there have been hundreds of other

books declaring to offer a quick look behind the Palace doors, this is the first written

by someone who is closely related to the Royal Family and has shared their lives—not only throughout the Queen’s rule but also through that of her father, King George VI.

The Final Curtsey was written by her Majesty’s cousin and childho od playmate the Honorable Margaret Rhodes. It tells in details the story of Mrs. Rhodes’s relationship with the Royal

family over eight decades. The book, with delightfully informal and never-before-seen pictures, has been written with the full knowledge of the Queen, who has read and approved

parts of it.

Born in 1925, the Honorable Margaret Rhodes has led an extraordinar y life. She was the childhood playmate of her cousin, the Queen; a wartime M16 spy; and she was a lady-in- waiting

(宫女) to her aunt, the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, from 1991 until the latter’s

death in 2002. At the Queen’s 80th birthday in April 2006, Margaret gave an interview to

the BBC which she proved that, in her own opinion and despite several false reports, the

Queen would not abdicate(退位).

In this charming autobiography, she told how she was offered a house to live in the Royal

farm in Windsor Great Park unexpectedly. One day when she and the Queen were out riding outside,

she suddenly returned and said, “Could you bear to live in the suburb?” “I think it should

be OK.” Therefore Mrs. Rhodes is now still living there.

27. Compared with other books about the Royal Family, the biggest advantage of The Final

Curtsey is that _______.

A. its author is very famous

B. its au thor knows the Queen well

C. it presents readers a very different Queen

D. it has pictures that have never been seen

28. When Mrs. Rhodes was offered to live in the Royal farm, she was _______.

A. unhappy

B. disappointed

C. sad

D. surprised

29. We can learn from Paragraph 3 that Mrs. Rhodes ________.

A. has lived quite a long life

B. was so famous that BBC interviewed her

C. has a close relationship with the royal family

D. has been very busy and kept on changing jobs

30. The passage is mainly about________.

There are a lot of different people in the world, but despite our differences, we all

want to get along with others. Humans are social beings, and we enjoy being treated nicely.

31 It is about treating people with respect and care.

Be a good listener. To start a conversation, it is important to listen first, especially

when you are in a group. Don’t indulge (放纵) yourself in instant chat when you have just arrived. Examine the situation and the conversation, and then say whatever you think fit.

It is better to say something substantial, rather than something meaningless. 32 Don’t try to change people. It is not your job to change anyone else. It is not in your

power to change anyone else. Let other people love how they want to live. 33 If

you do not like the way someone acts, you can try to interact with them as little as possible.

You can always maintain a good attitude towards them so that your relationship with them might change.

34 A little laughter goes a long way, and a smile eases tensions, whereas

a frown can create tensions. If someone teases you, try to laugh it off. If someone is frowning, smile at them. Be mindful of your facial expression. If you are persistently and optimistic, people will cheer up when they see you coming.

State out right that you want to get along. 35 For these people, it really works to just say, “I really want us to work well together. I will help you a nd back you up, and you help me and back me up.

Child raising is probably one of the most difficult jobs for people to do all over the world. Since babies do not come with child raising manuals(指南), couples, especially future mothers, have to learn from their mothers, aunts, mothers-in-law, or any other relative who

is close to them.

As children grow up, parents have to find reasonable ways in order to help their children, advise them, punish them, lead them to achievements, and teach them. Sometimes children under ten may behave inappropriately. For example, they learn to say offensive words and they show no respect for their relatives. I think parents in these cases should punish their children in a reasonable way. Children must know those kinds of attitudes are not good at all.

There are many aspects which influence parents in this hard job, for example, the culture in which they live, the economic situation in their society, and the religious environment.

One group consists of people who don’t have economical resources or educatio n. In this group, people get married when they are teenagers. Their Children are taken to their grandparents’ homes, so the job of child raising is done by grandparents instead of the real parents. If the grandparents are on the sidewalks selling newspapers, cigarettes, or magazines, the children will be like them, too. Some of them even end up being wallet thieves, gang members and drug users.

Other groups of people are hard workers or well-educated. The children grow up in their parents’ homes and ar e disciplined and punished differently. They learn to respect other people, and they are led to achieve in school, sports and community service. When they grow up, they often become political leaders, community leaders, and professionals in their fields.

高二英语期中考试题 一、阅读理解(共5大题;每小题2分,共40分) A On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the New York railway station, playing his violin. The music was so great that many people stopped to put some money into the hat of the young man. The next day, the young artist came to the same place, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it under his hat. Then he began to play the violin. It sounded more pleasant than ever. Soon he was surrounded with people who were attracted by the words on that paper. It said, "Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim(认领)it soon." After about half an hour, a middle-aged man rushed through the crowd to the violinist and said, "Yes, it's you. I knew that you were an honest man and would certainly come here." The young violinist asked calmly, "Are you Mr. George Sang?" The man nodded. The violinist asked, "Did you lose something?" "It's a lottery ticket (彩票)," said the man. The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang's name was seen. "Is it?" he asked. George nodded and took the lottery ticket and kissed it, then danced with the violinist. The violinist was a student at an arts college and had planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna. Later his classmate asked the violinist, "At that time you needed money to pay the tuition (学费)and you had to play the violin in the railway station every day to make money. Why didn't you keep the lottery ticket for yourself?" The violinist said, "Although I don't have much money, I live happily. But if I lose honesty I won't be happy forever." Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us. 1.What did the young artist do at the railway station on Friday? A. He walked around the New York railway station. B. He waited for the train to Vienna. C. He came to buy a train ticket to Vienna. D. He played the violin to make some money. 2.Which of the following statements is true according to the words on the paper? A. The hat belonged to George Sang.

According to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type of personality they have. Phipps has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality. Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal (胎儿的) position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up (蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps. The second most common position is the log. Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep. “The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,” according to Phipps. Yearner (向往) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style—on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting the best results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead. Perhaps the most peculiar (奇怪的) of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy. Inconclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: “A good night's sleep set you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake.” (1)Which sleeping position indicates that the sleeper tends to seek perfection? A、The fetal position. B、The log position. C、The yearner position. D、The freefaller position. (2)Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A、A good night's sleep sets you up for the following day B、Your personality depends a lot on how you sleep at night C、How you sleep at night affects what you do the next day D、Which sleeping position helps you sleep comfortably Our room was on the second floor but you could still hear the roar of the ocean and see the stars at night.
