My Understanding of Success

Name:徐祖炎Number: 2010145135 Class:

The renowned Chinese playwright WangShuo once defined success in his book To My Daughter as this : success is no more than having some money and letting others know you do. But with all the due respect, I strongly disapprove of this saying. For my part ,success has little to do with “having money”, true success is a long journey which includes three major indispensable steps.

First and foremost, the realization of your goals and dreams is a first big leap toward success, which probably is based on some material tings but is definitely not in proportion to how much money you have. It should be what you have dreamed to be by figuring out who you are and what do you want. For instance, if you are adventurous curious and have a passion for travel, your biggest dream is to take a trip around the world. However, many people are against it ,they insist that you work and make money. But you don not care, you make your biggest dream come true anyway. Then we call you are successful to some degree. However, if you are a person who is completely confused with yourself, not knowing who you are. You just blindly do whatever most people do , conforming to the majority, dreaming but not actioning, then in my opinion you are a failure. But still, making your goals and dreams come true is just a small step

toward success, you still need to take another two steps to arrive at the destination of success.

Secondly, to succeed, you are obliged to make contributions to society, small or big. By that I mean success should not only be the realization of your dreams, you must have obligations to do your part in the society and do not violet laws and commit sins. For example if you desire to be a terrorist or a assassin, like Osama Ben Laden, he make his “dreams” come true, but we call him a scumbag and a failure, because be brought traumas and miseries to the society, he violets laws and has human blood all over his hands. On the contrary, Mother Teresa , a nun and a Nobel Prize winner, dedicated her whole life to the people, especially the poor.when she was the leader of the Charity of Missionary she thought the mattresses on the beds of members of the organization was too luxurious and demanded that the mattresses be taken away, she said “to understand the poor we must know what poverty is”. She is never rich, but no one can deny that she is a true heroine and very successful. But still ,the journey toward success is still long and arduous.

Finally, being successful also means never forgetting your family . If you do make your goals and dreams come true and you contribute to the society, but you abandon your family and friends, then , I think, you fail. Family and friends help you all the way, they comfort you, wipe the tears for you, you need to be grateful, besides it is the responsibly you must

assume to take care of your parents, children, husband or wife. Due to the pressure of society and work, people often forget their duties as a family member . It is known to all that more and more old people in our society tend to raise pets as family members or friends to ease their pain and loneliness, many old people lead a sad and a lonely sunset life. What’s worse, many children are misbehaved, they smoke, drink, watch unhealthy books, videos and play excessive video games. Some children even suffer from depression. A lot of psychiatrists and doctors insist that a man’s childhood determines his fate. Many criminals and mentally-challenged people went through a terrible childhood. Who are responsible for these phenomena? Children themselves? They are too young too understand right and wrong. The old themselves? They did not choose loneliness voluntarily. If you already have a career you love and you make some contributions to society, then your success is incomplete. You must spare time as much as possible to spend time with them thus create a society full of happy old men and children.

In conclusion, to succeed, you have to make efforts to leap forward: achieving your goals and dreams by knowing who you are and what do you want, then you must do your part in the society with no violations of laws and no unhuman conduct. In addition, you must be grateful and responsible for your family. True success has little to do with wealth, it is not “ having some money and letting others know you do”.
