Integrated Writing:

Independent Writing:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: The most effective way for government to encourage energy conservation is increasing the price of gasoline and electricity.

Nowadays, frequent power cut or the drain of oil supply has become a serious problem that concerns us with its damage to not only the environment, but also our efficiency in work and study. Although some people propose to raise the cost of fuel as a solution to this issue, I personally believe that it is not the best way to solve the problem of air pollution.

Indeed, increasing the cost of gasoline and electricity can conserve energy to some extents. Considering the higher price of the fuel, more people would reduce their use of private cars or shut down lights and the air-conditioner when leaving home. As a result, the reduced number of cars leads to a decrease in demand to the gasoline and hence make the use of energy more efficiency. However, this solution does not solve the problem completely. Even the price of the gas goes up, most people would still choose to pay because fuels are the basic need for them to work and travel. Such necessity is not able to be replaced, and conservative problems would continue to be a problem. For example, my mom drives to work every day because there are no subway or buses between our home and her working place. Moreover, the public transportation is way too time-consuming and less comfortable.

For government, exploiting new energy sources, on the other hand, is a better alternative to energy conservation because it’s a stable solution that will solve the problem eternally. Cars that are powered by solar energy, for example, do not have to worry about the limited power supply, since it uses a long-lasting and powerful battery to absorb and store the energy from the sunlight and then use this energy to power the cars. According to research conducted by scientists in Japan and China, by holding the transformation rate between solar energy to electricity to 28 percent, the solar energy cars do not have to recharge itself and can keep running under the sun for 18 hours. Based on this, cars driven by solar energy would push the limits of energy to a new level.

Moreover, spreading out the concept of conserving energy is another more effective way to achieve the goal. In fact, there are certain group of citizens who are concerned with extravagant energy use, and they are quite cautious in using electricity, water and oiling their cars. If the government can take measures to educate more people with the same principles, energy consumption might drop considerately. Henry’s father used to be a truck driver when he was young. He is so fond of driving truck that he even go to nearby Walmart by his Toyota Tundra. After Henry was lectured about the energy crisis in many developing countries like India, he was aware of the fact that by saving energy as much as possible himself, he was able to help a family in New Deli to use electricity constantly for a night. Furthermore, he asked his father to join him and persuaded him to change driving truck into some clean energy car, namely Prius. By doing this, they might save certain amount of gasoline that could help poor people in Northwest Tibet use heaters in winter.

All in all, I believe raising the cost of the fuel is not the best way to conserve energy, since they are better alternatives such as applying new energy sources and necessary education to more people about necessity on energy crisis.

According to Paragraph 1,most previous surveys found that home___(根据第一段可知,之前的调查中认为家是一个____地方)。[A] offered greater relaxation than the workplace [B] was an ideal place for stress measurement [C] generated more stress than the workplace [D] was an unrealistic place for relaxation题目中明确给出范围,所以我们只要在第一段中找答案,且要注意题目中的关键词是previous。 A new study suggests that contrary to most surveys, people are actually more stressed at home than at work.(新的研究显示不同于以往的绝大多数调查,人们在家比工作时的压力更大)。这句话中new、contrary to most surveys是提示词,与题目中的previous study相对应的,不难做出正确答案是[A] 第22题According to Damaske, who are likely to be the happiest at home?(Damaske 认为,谁可能是最家里最快乐的?) It is men, not women, who report being happier at home than at work. Another surprise is that findings hold true for both those with children and without, but more so for nonparents. The blurring of working women's roles refers to the fact that__。 With the blurring of roles,发现前面的句子正是对这种现象的解释:for women who work outside the home, they often are playing catch-up-with-household tasks.以及后面的the home front lags well behind the workplace a making adjustments for working women,指的便是女性不仅得工作赚钱,而且还得在家得忙家务,所以她们的身份是双重的。所以选[D] they are both bread winners and housewives. The word“ moola”(Line4,Para4)most probably means__这是一道词义推测题,它与前文中的marking money是近义词,答案选[C] earnings收入。 第25题The home front differs from the workplace in that__。文章第5段there are inadequate rewards for most of them. Your home colleagues-your family-have no clear rewards for their labor;家务劳动不会像工作一样得到足够的奖励,而且分工也是不明确的。 [A] division of labor at home is seldom clear-cut.

Section I Use of English Directions: Read the following passage. For each numbered blank there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET l. (10 points) The outbreak of swine flu that was first detected in Mexico was declared a global pandemic on June 11, 2009, in the first designation by the World Health Organization of a worldwide pandemic in 41 years. The heightened alert came after an emergency meeting with flu experts in Geneva that convened after a sharp rise in cases in Australia, and rising numbers in Britain, Japan, Chile and elsewhere. But the pandemic is "moderate" in severity, according to Margaret Chan, the organization's director general, with the overwhelming majority of patients experiencing only mild symptoms and a full recovery, often in the absence of any medical treatment. The outbreak came to global notice in late April 2009, when Mexican authorities noticed an unusually large number of hospitalizations and deaths among healthy adults. As much of Mexico City shut down at the height of a panic, cases began to crop up in New York City, the southwestern United States and around the world. In the United States, new cases seemed to fade as warmer weather arrived. But in late September 2009, officials reported there was significant flu activity in almost every state and that virtually all the samples tested are the new swine flu, also known as (A) H1N1, not seasonal flu. @Zov&0 1 In the U.S., it has infected more than one million people, and caused more than 600 deaths and more than 6,000 hospitalizations. Federal health officials released Tamiflu for children from the national stockpile and began taking orders from the states for the new swine flu vaccine. The new vaccine, which is different from the annual flu vaccine, is available ahead of expectations. More than three million doses were to be made available in early October 2009, though most of those initial doses were of the FluMist nasal spray type, which is not recommended for pregnant women, people over 50 or those with breathing difficulties, heart disease or several other problems.
