2. Everyday Etiquette for Office Life

What makes a good boss?

It's up to1 employers and managers to initiate the kinds of relationships they want with their employees and also to set the tone2 for employees' behavior. If the bosses are rude or officious3 with customers, then employees will be, too. If bosses treat employees and customers with fairness and respect, this, too, will reverberate4. Lots of bosses, though, aren't sure what's expected of them. Here are ten rules that will help

a boss create a supportive atmosphere:

1.Take the lead. Bosses are supposed to set examples in all areas, from their work to their manners. Make sure you do this.

2.Show respect for all employees, regardless of gender, race, religion --or personality.

3.Respect employees' privacy. You may have to search an assistant's desk in his absence for a paper you need, and you certainly have the right to do so. But this doesn't give you the right to leaf through5 a checkbook6 or what is obviously personal correspondence7.

4.Give frequent compliment and praise. People perform better and more efficiently when they are encouraged, and your job as the boss is to be the main encourager.

5.Make sure your criticism is fair. It's easier to accept graciously8.

6.Respect other's autonomy9. Put together a good team and then let them do their job. Infantilizing10 employees by looking over their shoulders11 at every move often makes for a belligerent12, tense office environment.

7.Be available13. If possible, leave your door open at least part of each day. Answer your own phone. Be open to14 ideas, even when they're critical of how you run things.

https://www.sodocs.net/doc/249066375.html,e the name your employees prefer. If your female secretary is elderly, or even if not, use the appropriate title(Miss, Mrs, or Ms.)

9.Show small courtesies15. You're the one with the power, thus it behooves16 you to extend small courtesies to make your employees more comfortable. When an employee comes into your office and needs to talk to you, ask her to sit down. When the employee leaves your office after a long talk, stand up to say good- bye. Shake hands and give a gracious welcome to an employee who's just returned from a vacation or from some other absence17.

10.Don't make employees your servants. Employees are there to work, not to do your every beckoning18. Get your own coffee, balance19 your own checkbook, and do your own holiday shopping.

1.upto[

2.setthetone定调子

3.officious[ ]adj.

4.reverberate[ ]vt.

5.leafthrough

2 Random Thoughts--Party

Last night, pressured by well- intentioned friends, for the first time in months, I came out of writer’ s seclusion1 and attended a cocktail party which is another word for a social gathering. So there I was, trapped in a crowded room, people milling2 all around me, each with a drink in hand, chitchatting3 while the waiters skillfully negotiated4 their way through the bustle5 with trays of colorful beverages6 and fancy hors d’ oeuvres7.It was definitely party time!

Yet, instead of losing myself to the convivial8 surroundings of food, drink and conversations, I found myself retreating back into my head all the way to China where the subject of American sociality is of great interest.

In China, many of my students are curious about how Americans party and have a good time. “ What do you do? Sing and dance? To what kind of music?”

“ What’ s American party talk?” “ How do you dress and act at a party?” “ How about food? What do you eat?”

Every year, without fail, students ask their foreign teachers to dedicate a full class to this fascinating topic. Of course, one would think that a subject as interesting and entertaining as such would make for an excellent lesson plan, a rich source of discussions. But to my surprise, many teachers run into roadblocks9 when generating 10 this particular lesson plan.

“ Michelle, Michelle! I have to teach a class on American parties. And I only have, hmm, five things to say about it. And that’ll take about five minutes. What am I supposed to do after that?” They cry.

“ Well, tell me what those five things are,” I ask.

“ Arrive late, talk, eat, drink, and have a blast.” They blurt out.

It is true that the five steps listed above encompass11 much of the goings-on12 at American social gatherings. Of course, during parties for special occasions such as: Birthdays, holidays, weddings, baby showers, anniversaries, graduations, etc., there are additional ceremonies such as: cake cutting, gift opening, dancing, toasting, game playing, etc. But regardless, the fundamentals of a typical American soiree 13 are good company, good food and drinks, and good times.

Sounds simply, doesn’ t it? But if you were to look deeper and think further, you’ ll realize that there’ s far more to these steps than meets the eyes.

1. FASHIONABLY LATE

It is a major faux pas14 (social embarrassment) to arrive at a party early or even on time. Therefore, with the exception of the hosts, you never want to be the first person present at a social function. Why? Because people fear that others may think that they have no life or nothing better to do than waiting for a party to start. Many Americans try to project15 an image of business which, whether true or not, has a positive correlation16 with success. So by arriving late, you are saying: “ I lead a full life and it's exciting and productive.”

Therefore, an 8 o’ clock party customarily doesn’ t really start until maybe 9 o’ clock as everyone wants to be thought of as a busy and important person with lots to do. In other words, a party is one of those rare occasions where your punctuality17 can actually hurt you. Weird18, isn’ t it. Anyhow, remember, be fashionably late.

2. SMALL TALK

One way of gauging19 the success of a party is by the noise meter. The louder the party is, the more happening it is, and the more fun people are having. Then you stop to wonder, if it’ s so noisy, how can people really hear each other and have great, engaging conversations? The truth is: They don’ t. They engage in small talk, which is another word for casual, trivial conversations. They chew the fat20, shoot the breeze21 and swap anecdotes about random subjects: work, family, news, weather, hobbies, etc. Because the surrounding noise and activities often sidetrack people, it’ s difficult to get personal or discuss any one topic at length or in depth. The point is to have fun, not to get serious.

However, keep in mind that since people tend to be in good moods and spirit when attending a social function, parties often provide an excellent environment for making new friends and establishing valuable business contacts. In fact, in many professions, important business transactions22 are initiated at a social event. People meet, have a nice chat, exchange information, and make a good

impression.Sometimes that’ s all it takes to begin a long-lasting friendship or business association. So never underestimate the power of small talk.

3. FOOD FOR FUN

With the exception of dinner parties where a full meal is served, most parties offer finger foods--food that you pick up with your fingers. (So don’ t worry, it is not impolite to eat with your hands at parties.) Some of the classic party foods are cheese and crackers23, crudité s24 (vegetables and dip), fruits, shrimp toasts, Swiss meatballs,

mini sandwiches, shrimp cocktail, etc. And believe it or not, Asian foods are now in fashion. Mini egg rolls, California sushi25 rolls and various dim sum dishes always add an exotic flair to a party. And the Americans love it.

Anyhow, party foods aren’ t meant to be eaten as a meal. They are simply yummy26 accents to the party and eaten to absorb all that alcohol you’ re about to

consume. So don’ t pile too much food on your plate.Remember, you can always get refills. And one more thing, don’ t talk with your mouth full. It’ s rude.

4. DRINK AND BE MERRY?

Here’ s a frequently used party acronym27, BYOB: Bring Your Own Bottle.

Alcohol plays a big part in most American parties. People drink to relax, unwind and enjoy themselves. Anyhow that's the way it should be.

Unfortunately it’ s not always the case and sometimes you sense the unspoken pressure to join the crowd. As a result, you feel out of place28 without a beverage in your hand. I even notice from observation that frequently the first thing people do upon arriving at a party is to hit the bar, kick off 29 the night with a few drinks. Sometimes, there are even those, mostly young, who go to parties for the sole purpose of getting drunk, trashed, plastered30, totaled. Not a smart thing to do since we all know the effect alcohol can have on us. (People tend to talk loudly when they’ re intoxicated which might explain why it’ s so loud at parties.)

In America, there’ s definitely a negative association between drinking and partying. If you lose control of your drinking, you lose control of your partying, vise versa31. As a result, drunks not only make a fool of themselves but their drunken behavior could endanger their safety and the safety of others. I suppose as with most things, moderation is the key.

2. What You Don’t Talk About!

One of the recurring1 questions that my students in China often ask is: “ What are the things they shouldn't talk about with Americans?” Taboo2 topics tend to make people feel uneasy3. Every culture has these off-limits4 subjects. In ours, the following immediately come to mind:

1. Age Yes, age is a very sensitive subject to many Americans, especially to women over age 30. In this youth obsessed5 culture, the thought of growing older is a painful one and most of us, if possible, would like to have nothing to do with it. Unfortunately aging is one of the inevitabilities of life and it happens to the best of us. As a result, many Americans work hard to maintain a youthful appearance or at least give the illusion of youth. So the last thing they want is for someone to rub6 their faces in harsh7 reality and ask the unthinkable, “ How old are you exactly?”

This question may result in replies like:“ How old do you think I am?” “ 30ish, 30 something. I'm in my thirties. Let's just leave it at that8.” “ I can't remember.” “ Oh, don't ask me that.” “ I stopped keeping track9 after I turned 30.” “ A lot older than what I would like to be.”

Anyhow, if you are dying to know someone's age, this is how you could go about finding out. First you estimate their age by their appearance and mannerism10.Then you subtract11 ten years from that estimation. I guarantee you will get a big smile from that person who will also blush and say, “ Wow. You are my best friend. I'm 38 already. Can you believe it?” You, of course, reply, “ No. I really can't. You're kidding. You don't look a day over 28.This is amazing.” Now that's one surefire12 way to boost someone's ego!

2. Weight This is one of the touchiest subjects. In America, it is okay, even desirable, to be thin but it is a sin and a huge embarrassment to be overweight. In fact, the thinner you are, the prettier you are considered. Flip through any American fashion magazines, you'll notice that most models are nothing more than skin and bones.A woman who sports this emaciated13,skeletal14 physique is called a waif

15,which is a thin person who appears fragile16 and needy. Believe it not,the waif look was the hottest look of the 1990's. Of course, there are obvious health related advantages to having a slender figure but please don't over diet for the sake of vanity. You could potentially become a victim to horrible eating disorders like anorexia17 and bulimia18.

Americans are very weight-conscious and rarely disclose how much they weigh...even if they are thin and in great shape19. Therefore, you best not to ask. But if you absolutely have to comment on this subject, it's always safer to say, “ Oh, you look like you have lost weight” than “ Oh, you look like you put on a few pounds.” However, if you would like to be honest but not hurtful, I recommend you choose

your words carefully, perhaps by saying:“ Hey, you look great. Very healthy looking.” And always remember, it's not fat. It's muscular.

3. Income You should never ever ask how much someone's salary is. There's no way around this one. However, it's perfectly appropriate to ask about their job title and what they do for a living. This information should give you some idea how much they make a year.

4. Matters of the Heart This is a tricky one. Sometimes you'll run into people who can't wait to pour their hearts out to you. Then there are those who make sure their personal business stays behind closed doors20. The general rule is to not get too personal, too fast. You don't want others to think that you're prying into21 their lives. Therefore, try not to ask too many questions about someone's love life, marriage and family until you have a friendship with this person. Even then, you better wait for your friend to come to you with the matters of their heart.

5. Is It Real? Many Americans are proponents22 of the all-natural look. Stick with what Mother Nature gave you and do the best you can with it. But how many truly abide by23 this principle? With plastic surgery24 and products like colored contact lens25, hair coloring, acrylic26 nails, etc, the answer would be: not many. I suppose some of us either like to experiment with our looks or are simply unhappy with what we're born with.

As artificial as the results of these physical alterations may be, they are done to imitate nature. At the end of the day, people want others to believe they're simply born beautiful. So don't ruin it for them by asking, “ Hey, I love your eye color. Is it real?”

What makes certain topics taboo? These topics may lead to disclosure27 of information that people don't want others to know about. In other words, sometimes it's not so much that you asked the wrong question, but that you touched a sore spot28. Regardless, it's difficult to always avoid conversation landmines so be sensible, watch your step29 and try not to open a can of worms30.

2、Brave New World

Welcome to year 2001. To many Americans, it has a nice, familiar ring since much of our culture revolves around forecasting the new millennium, this fascinating time of great social and technological developments. Growing up in the 80's and the 90's, I remember reading books and watching movies set in the amazing 21st century. People dressed in biosuits, babies born in laboratories, cars travelling through air, and the moon has become our favorite vacation spot. These incredible images used to fill my young mind with excitement. I would lie awake at night, thinking how slowly time moved, wondering if I'd live to see the 21st century. (Keep in mind I was only ten years old then.) And that day has finally arrived. The future is here and now.

Last week, I was driving to a meeting with a movie producer. Suddenly the traffic ahead came to an abrupt halt and we went from 70 miles per hour to a total stand still. (Usual for L.A. freeways.) Trapped, we leaned back in our seats.“ So, Michelle, what are your plans for the New Year? I mean what do you hope to accomplish in this year?” She asked.

“ OK?” I thought for a moment. “ You mean New Year resolutions?”

“ Can't start the year without them.” She smiled. “ You know, turn over a new leaf.”

“ Yes, I know. And no, I haven't given it that much thought yet.”

“ Do you have any resolutions?”

Then it dawned on me how much our personal resolutions, however small and insignificant they may seem, reflect the current social mentality and, in the long run, determine the course of our society. Let's for a moment, think about the word, resolution. It means having the resolve and the firm conviction to do something, a state of being determined. I don't know about you, but it requires a lot of courage and strength to have resolve which includes persistence, perseverance, drive. It's interesting how most resolutions involve some kind of change. And this desire for change is often the motivator for progress. Therefore, by taking note of people's New Year resolutions, we can foresee the direction which our society gravitates toward. On that note, let's look at what most Americans have on their plate for this year's New Year resolutions:

Lose 25 pounds before the summer Quit smoking Cut back drinking Work out for 1 hour three times a week Read a novel a week Stick within a spending budget Learn a new programming language Eat five servings of vegetables a day Get a job promotion Travel the world in 80 days Floss after every meal Go to see a dentist Call home every week Watch less TV Decide what my passions are and follow them Find a better paying job with more upward mobility Etc, etc, etc?

Believe it or not, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The list goes on and on. And from it, we can gather that America is a youth, health and career/success obsessed society.

1.YOUTH

Looking around America, you'll notice that most faces on billboards, magazines, TV and advertisements are that of young, pretty people. In a culture that equates youth with beauty, a majority of Americans is constantly at war with aging. Before the advent of new technologies, people used to jump through hoops to shave a couple years off of their looks. But now, laser surgery is a relatively painless alternative to

c facelifts an

d skin tucks. And let us not forget all th

e fancy anti aging cosmeti products and skin treatments in department stores and beauty salons. Furthermore, we have also developed holistic approaches to fighting aging: yoga, herbs, acupuncture, etc.

It seems like people will do almost anything to stay young. But the crazy thing is that you can't stay young forever. That's impossible. What you can do is feel youthful. And that requires much more than cosmetic changes. In order to feel young, you must exercise your mind, keep up with the world and maintain an active lifestyle. In other words, instead of spending $5000 on wrinkle removing laser surgery, why not go on an adventurous journey to an unfamiliar part of the world? Instead of spending $50 on a bottle of anti aging lotion, why not buy a mountain bike?

We should always remember the fountain of youth lies in our heart, mind and spirit.

2.HEALTH

One of the characteristics of youth is good health. And Americans are definitely on the right track.Since the early 90's, America has been on a big health kick. People are staying away from foods that are high in fat, sodium and cholesterol. More of us are quitting smoking, cutting down drinking and exercising more.We sip herbal teas, gulp fresh juices, stir fry organic vegetables, hire personal trainers, and consult nutritionists.Do you know that some Americans take $15 worth of vitamins a day? Unbelievable, huh?

In addition to staying in good physical form, we try to enhance our mental and spiritual health. Most Americans lead a stressful lifestyle: too many places to go, people to see, bills to pay, etc. As a result, we are tense, stiff and wound up. In recent years, various stress reduction therapies such as yoga, meditation, massages, and aromatherapy have become a living necessity, like medicine for the overtaxed mind and the soul. After all, a sound mind in a sound body is the best state to be in.

3.CAREER AND SUCCESS

Needless to say, there are many advantages to being young and healthy, one of which is doing and achieving more with your life. That's right. If you're young, you have your whole life ahead of you. If you're healthy, you'll live longer. Youth and health are the building blocks of success.

Our lives are plotted out with milestones. And we are expected to accomplish certain things by certain ages. So the sooner you can achieve these milestones, the more successful you are.

In a society where your happiness and self worth are determined by your career accomplishments, people are under the pressure to devote themselves entirely to their work. Often times, people disregard their passions and interests and choose careers based on job security, pay and professional prestige. As a result, they are unhappy and their personal lives and love ones suffer. Personally, I think success means you're making a comfortable living doing what you love and enjoy.

Anyway, regardless of the resolution, we are all making a commitment toward betterment. And with it, there is the hope for a happier life and an improved sense of self. How odd that it is our constant dissatisfaction with the status quo that propels society forward? After all, nothing kills progress like complacency. But now the nagging question is, why must we wait for New Years to make resolutions. Today is as good as any. Right? A brave new world awaits us and its dawn depends on our resolve to move steadily forward and towards something better, something different, and something wonderful. I took a deep breath and settled on my life's resolutions grand as it may sound, I'm determined to make the most of every second of my life. Because a bright future begins with the present and the present is here and now.
