In the 13th century, the famous Italian traveler, Marco Polo, traveled a long way to China. During his stay in China, he saw many wonderful things. One of the things he discovered was that the Chinese used paper money.

A Chinese man called Cai Lun invented paper almost 2,000 years ago. He made it from bark, old fishing nets and other things. He then put these pieces of paper together and made them into a book.

Now paper still comes from trees. We use a lot of paper every day. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth. If there are no trees, there will be no paper. It is reported that people throw away about 3,000 tons of paper only in Shanghai every day. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that they are cutting nearly 51,000 trees every day. Since it takes more than ten years for a tree to grow, we must start using less paper now. If we don’t, we will no t have enough time to grow more trees to take the place of those we use for paper.

Reports from southern Sudan say up to 50 people have been killed during three days international fighting among troops of the national army. The violence started near a border town on Thursday. As soldiers from the south refused to disarm and moved to the north, the violence soon spread to two other places.

The World Band says rising food prices have pushed an extra 44 million people into poverty since last June. The World Band’s food price index has gone up by 15% in the last four months alone. The World Bank figures show sharp price increases in wheat, maize, sugar, and edible oils over the past six months. Wheat and maize are the basis of many poor people’s diets. But the poor suffer a lot more because they also spend a larger part of their income on food than people in richer countries.

Prison officials in Colombia say they’ve caught an 11-year-old girl trying to send dozens of mobile phones and a gun secretly into a jail. The guards became suspicious when they saw what they described as strange shapes underneath the girl’s sweater. When they took a closer look, they found 74 mobile phones and a gun taped to her back.
