SIM Card Cutter

Change regular SIM cards to smaller SIM cards.

Did you know you can cut a regular size phone SIM card to a smaller size SIM card and it will still work? This tool will help you do it. Just stick a SIM card in it, press it down like a stapler(订书机). A perfectly shaped smaller SIM is there. I’ve used it many times when swapping SIMs from one phone to another.

03/7/17-- Mark Frauenfelder Prof i Cheese Slicer

Uses a thin wire to slice up to medium-hard cheeses in four inch sections.

I may own every cheese slicer ever made. I prefer a wire type cheese cutter so I can cut slices that work well on a piece of bread and sandwich.

This cheese slicer is great for both tasks. It even has adjustable tension on the two cutting wires. A point of information: I did break a wire cutting a very hard piece of cheese with black pepper. Good news, the wire is replaceable, and I was able to purchase new wires to fix it. Maybe best to use on softer cheeses. Lessons learned. But, highly recommended for every other use except for those extremely hard cheeses.

03/6/17-- Kent Barnes

Ash Bucket(桶子)

Bucket with lid keeps your fireplace(壁炉) clear of ashes.

I purchased this ash bucket recommended by my friend and have found it invaluable. Previously I had an old bucket that got left outside and usually filled up with rain and became a mess to clean. This ash bucket has a raised bottom and thermal insulation(隔热层) to prevent any accidental hot coals in your ash to damage your

floor or cause a fire. You can store this bucket indoors since the lid is nice and tight.

03/3/17-- Seth Wilson

D. Help store more information.

A. Cheese slices with cracked black pepper.

Weaving hammocks(吊床) is an art that takes a sharp eye, a skilled hand and lots of patience. But in Lenwood Haddock’s case, being blind works to his advantage. His trained, sensitive hands can perfectly handle every step of the complicated process. Since beginning his craft in 1986, Lenwood has woven about 145,000 perfect hammocks.

Now 61, Lenwood lost his sight in 1973, at age 18, during a hunting accident. “My whole working career has been blind,” he says. He first found a job as a woodworker, but when that organization closed, the North Carolina Division of Services for the Blind connected him with Hatteras Hammocks.

On his first day of work, “I did a total of one hammock,” Lenwood recalls, laughing. “And then I came home and laid on the sofa and went to sleep. I lift weights, but I wasn’t as tough as I thought until I started weaving. It takes a lot of energy, and you’re standing up all day.”

In time, however, Lenwood got into a good working rhythm and found he had a gift for the job. At first he worked on-site at the company, but after a year Lenwood moved his operation to the home workshop where he’d worked for 10 years during his woodworking days.

Since Lenwood began with Hatteras Hammocks 30 years ago, the company has acquired other brands and changed its name to The Hammock Source. Today, it is the world’s largest maker and seller of hammocks, all built by hand.

24. How old was Lenwood Haddock when he began weaving hammocks?

A. 18 years old.

B. 26 years old.

C. 31 years old.

D. 61 years old.

25. How did Lenwood Haddock feel after he has finished his first hammock?

A. Disappointed.

B. Exhausted.

C. Energetic.

D. Bored.

26. Which of the following is needed in weaving hammocks?

A. Poor eyesight.

B. Sensitive mind.

C. Untrained craft.

D. Full patience.

27. What is the best title of the passage?

B. The Blind Craftsman Who Makes Perfect Hammocks

C. How to Weave Perfect Hammocks by Hand

D. How to Become a Successful Craftsman

C

Let me start by saying that I don’t have a smartphone, but I probably will in the future. I think smartphones are basically awesome and I have nothing against the basic idea of using smartphones.

My problem starts when the lines between fun and work, between alone and together, between communication and confusion –become blurred. I’ve just returned from two years in a different country, and have n’t been around my friends for a while. The first several times I met them all, I was surprised to discover that even though we’re all sitting around in the same room, people are actually sitting around smartphones and playing/surfing/taking pictures.

Smartphones made it easier than ever before to access e-mails everywhere. Whether you’re on the bus, in bed or at the bar with your friends – your e-mails are right there and available to you and this can definitely be a problem. Work is great, but is answering e-mails at 3 a.m. really necessary? Do you really want to have to choose between friends and work when you’re hanging out in a bar, just because you happened to see that e-mail?

Smartphones revolutionized our lives. I’m not here to oppose that. But sho uld they replace many of the other things we used to be doing, together and alone? If you think about it for a minute, I’m sure you’ll find someone you know who sometimes finds it hard to draw the line between phone time and people time. This has been

a pr oblem for a while, but smartphones make it that much worse. So don’t throw away your smartphones just yet; but do try to remember, at the end of the day, they’re just phones!

28. What does the underlined word “blurred” (para. 2) probably mean?

A. Blocked.

B. Unclear.

C. Distinct.

D. Concrete.

29. What happened when the writer met his friends after he returned from abroad?

A. They welcomed him warmly.

B. They sat in the same room talking happily.

C. They played with their smartphones.

D. They went to a net bar to surf the internet.

30. The writer is likely to answer e-mails _____________.

A. in his office on the morning of workdays

B. on a bus to work

C. in bed at 3 a.m.

D. in a bar after work

31. What does the writer suggest people do in the passage?

A. Throw away their smartphones.

B. Check e-mails regardless of time and place.

C. Draw the line between phone time and people time.

D. Communicate with others using smartphones.

Scientists found sea levels are rising faster today than anytime over the past 3,000 years. The sea level researchers gathered information going back 28 centuries, and their findings were released Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Robert Kopp, from Rutgers University in N ew Jersey, is the paper’s lead author. He said the 20th century sea rise was “extraordinary” when compared to the past 3,000 years. And, Kopp said, “The rise over the last two decades has been even faster.”

Scientists from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric admin istration reported that temperatures at the North Pole hit record highs in January. This news comes after 2020 has been the hottest year ever recorded. The earlier estimates show that temperatures around the Earth have risen more than a half degree Celsius since

1880. Scientists say that most of that rise is because of emissions, or gases, released into the air by machines that humans have built.

When temperatures rise, so do sea levels. That is because snow and ice melt, or break off from glaciers. They flow into the sea. The increased water makes the sea levels rise.

And it is not going to get better. The water is going to rise, said Stefan Rahmstorf, the study’s co-author. "I think we can definitely be confident that sea level rise is going to continue to accelerate if there's further warming." he told The New York Times. He said "inevitably there will be" more warming, which means it will continue to rise.

One question is how much will the sea levels rise? And for how long? The research ers said the Earth’s sea level could rise more than a meter by the year 2100.

32. Scientists’ findings about sea level rise are based on information through _________.

A. 20 centuries

B. 28 centuries

C. 3,000 years

D. two decades

33. What can we learn from paragraph 3?

A. The North Pole had the highest temperature in 2020.

B. 2020 is the hottest year throughout the history of the earth.

C. Global temperatures have risen a half degree Celsius since 1880.

D. Human activities should be responsible for most of the global temperature rise.

34. Why do sea levels rise according to the passage?

A. Water expands when heated.

B. When temperatures rise, it rains a lot.

C. Snow and ice melt and its water flows into seas.

D. Scienti sts haven’t found the reason so far.

35. What does this article mainly talk about?

A. The consequences of sea levels’ rise.

B. Sea levels rise with temperatures’ rise.

C. The reasons of high temperatures.

D. Global temperatures have hit a record high.

How to Help a Teenager Make Good Decisions

Habitually poor decision-making is common in teenagers. Naturally, such a habit makes parent-teen relationship difficult, especially when a parent wants his teen to do what a “responsible adolescent” would do. 36__

●Distinguish real problems from “childish” acts. 37 By making small and

harmless mistakes, like a recently-developed habit of careless consuming, a teen learns good decision-making skills on his own via self-correction. Next time, he’ll be more likely to think twice before making his buying decision.

38 More likely, it is out of a real inability to determine what’s best for

him.

● Set clear expectations. 39 For example, if your teen refuses to study for

his math final because “math is pointless”, explain that you expect him to perform well in school, even in the “pointless” classes. A void saying “Let’s just give up on math, then.”

● 40 Trade insignificant freedoms, such as clothing style for the promise

that he’ll live up to academic and family responsibilities. If your teen could realize it, allow him to be himself. Not only does giving up a bit of control solve many conflicts, but the extra freedom you give him can also improve his decision-making.

A. Find a middle ground.

B. Learn to solve problems.

C. Point out your expectations and his responsibilities.

D. A responsible adolescent must have role models to learn from.

E. Don’t think the teen is making bad deci sions just to challenge you.

F. Therefore, it’s important to guide them wi th problem-solving strategies.

G. Teens often make poor decisions simply because they don’t have the experiences.

书面表达

Dear Jack,

I’m glad that you are interested in the Scholarly Campus activity in our school. I’m eager to tell you something about it.

Re cently our school has held the Scholarly Campus activity with the aim of encouraging us students to read more books. We have conducted several activities, such as holding class meetings about books, opening reading clubs, sharing reading

experiences and so on. Now the concept of Scholarly Campus is so well-received that you can find students read books all over the campus.

As for me, I’m more than happy to join in the activity. Not only does it arouse students’interest in reading, but it also cultivates student s’love for knowledge and, more importantly, for life. I’m sure it will bring benefits for students.

Wish you all the best!

Yours,

Li Hua

Text 10

W: Let’s hear about Mr. Brown’s comment to the movie.

M: He llo, everyone. I thought Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth was on the whole a good film. It is an excellent film for teachers to show their classes to explain global warming. It explains the facts very well, explains away the objections that people have been hearing about from the media, and is also pretty funny at times. The film basically co nsists of a tour of Al Gore’s climate change speeches around the world. It starts off with a few diagrams that many of you have probably seen already. This film is really for the general public who do not know all of this, and it is also for those who might have heard something about global warming here and there but want to see exactly how all of the facts fit together.

I think it is a good film, but it is not perfect. The problems come in the short but noticeable periods when the film tries to be a biography of Al Gore at the same time. I was watching this to find out about global warming, not to find out what Al Gore thought about losing his election. I imagine that these are the bits that teachers’ will have to skip when they show this to their classes, since they don’t really add anything to the film. I would have respected Al Gore a bit more if he hadn’t tried to make this a film about himself as well.
