BUS 1010 Introduction to Business

Course Description:

This course presents a broad introduction to the functioning of business enterprise. It designed to provide first year students with a fundamental understanding of the business environment, the nature and structure of modern business organizations, and selected functional areas. It gives students a macro view of business as well as to provide them with meaningful and real-world-oriented information.

Course objectives:

The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the general business principles and concepts. It will address both theory and practical application. As a result of this course the students will:

?Have a working knowledge of the impact of external and global factors on business decisions in respect to how the organization accomplishes its mission and objectives.

?Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basic functional roles of a manager (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling) and how they are related.

?Have an appreciation of and the ability to describe how the basic functional areas of the organization contribute to accomplishing the organization’s success.

?Develop a foundation for the skills demanded of a business person in preparation for more advanced courses.

?Acquire an attitude of respect and appreciation toward the team dynamics and art of business. ?Enhance their ability to create a business plan and becoming a more effective communicator about business plans/ issues.

Teaching Approach:

Students are encouraged to take charge of their own learning process by reading the assigned materials before class, completing individual and group assignments on time and by entering into class discussions and exercises. There are two lecture hours and one tutorial hour for all students each week. Class will follow the approach of lectures augmented with current events, films, case studies, group and individual exercises. The tutorials are designed to cover, in more detail, selected topics areas presented in current issues, preceding lecture and to discuss contemporary issues pertaining to the business scene.

Students should log on to the Online Learning Center’s web site: https://www.sodocs.net/doc/2313705213.html,/ferrell7e. The site offers the student the opportunity to test their understanding of each chapter through multiple choice quizzes.

Various other business textbooks, websites, weekly and monthly business periodicals and daily business newspapers such as the Asian Wall Street Journal, and the South China Morning Post will be drawn upon throughout the course.

Assessment:

The weightings for the individual components are as follows:

1.Mid- Term Test 25%

2.Final Examination 40%

3.Business Plan 15%

4.Assignments 10%

5.Attendance/Participation 10%

Total 100% Examinations

The Mid-Term Test which includes Chapter 1 to 7, will be held on the 7th week. The final examination will require basic comprehension of all the course material will be held at the end of the term..

Business Plan (Group Project)

Small teams of 3 to 4 students will be formed to develop a business plan for an enterprise in an assigned industry. As a term-long project, the business plan will allow teams to draw upon the most important elements of the course. Ten-page written plans will be presented to the instructor on April 30th at the beginning of class. They will also be presented orally with PPT to the class for discussion during the last two weeks of class meetings.

Assignment Current Event In Business (Individual Project)

You are encouraged to develop the habit of reading business periodicals. Please read business article that reports on a current event in business. The article should relate to any of the many topics we have covered or are currently covering in the syllabus.

Subject to the approval of the instructor, students can provide a five-page written review of the current event to the instructor as individual assignment. The report will be evaluated based on content as well as writing style and organization.

Participation

Attendance is expected and will be rewarded under participation. However, active involvement in the class discussion will also be measured. You are encouraged to challenge ideas/theories and develop effective business communications skills.

Course Policies:

To get the most out of this course, and to make it an enjoyable learning experience, the following guidelines will be adhered to:

?Attendance: Regular attendance is expected. Roll call will be taken systematically at the beginning of each class period. Being absent deprives you of valuable class discussions and information.

?Preparation for Class: Assigned readings must be completed before each class session.

These readings provide the basis for an informed analysis of management issues.

?Professional courtesy: Professional courtesy includes respecting others’ opinions, working together in a spirit of cooperation, and actively listening to those who are speaking. In order to use class time productively, please avoid behaviors that make it difficult for us to

accomplish our mutual objectives.

?Academic Integrity: Deliberate violations of academic integrity (plagiarism and cheating) are not tolerated. Academic misconduct will be dealt with according to administrative policy. ?Course Work: Deadlines and guidelines for written and oral assignments are on the course lecture/tutorial schedule and will be discussed specifically in class. To receive credit for this course, all major assignments and exams must be completed.

?Late Work: Assignments turned in after class on the due date will be considered late. Late assignments will be penalized of the total points. No assignments will be accepted after one week beyond the due date.

Note:The following is a tentative schedule of activities. The instructor reserves the right to change it if the course objectives can be better achieved. A change may be needed as a result of emerging opportunities to secure guest speakers, current events that call for more attention, and unforeseen circumstances.

*Note: The two holidays that fall on scheduled class days may require make-up session.
