1.Introduction

1.1 The Background of Austen

Jane Austen (1775-1817) was born in Hampshire, a country priest family located in Hants, the village of Kingston, Sidemen in north England. She was a beautiful, talented middle class woman with extraordinary temperament and good cultivation. Her six novels--Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbery, Manshifeierde Manor, Emma, Persuasion “all describe more than marriage” (Wang, 2005: 64). However, her marriage is in blank within her 42 years lifetime. Going through the best time of the life, she ultimately doesn’t meet the right person in her life and finally gives up her love. With these sweet and bitter experiences she writes the great work Pride and Prejudice.

Jane Austen was mostly tutored at home, and irregularly at school, but she received a broader education than many women of her time. She started to write for family amusement as a child. Her parents were avid readers; Austen’s own f avorite poet was Cowper. Her earliest-known writings date from about 1787. Very shy about her writing, she wrote on small pieces of paper that she slipped under the desk plotter if anyone came into the room. In her letters she observed the daily life of her family and friends in an intimate and gossipy manner: “James danced with Alethea, and cut up the turkey last night with great perseverance. You say nothing of the silk stocking;I flatter myself, therefore, that Charles has not purchased any, as I cannot very well afford to pay for them; all my money is spent in buying white gloves and pink persian.” (Austen in a letter to her sister Cassandra in 1796.)

1.2 The Background of Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice, similar to other Austen’s satire in the n ovel is the mercenary and the ignorance of the people, a common criticism of the 18th century. Characters in the novel which best carries these qualities are: Mrs. Bennet, a foolish woman who talks too much and is obsessed with getting her daughters married; Lydia Bennet, the youngest of the Bennet daughter who is devoted to a life of dancing, fashions, gossips and flirting; and Mr.Williams Collins, the silly and conceited baboon

who is completely stupefy by Lady Catherine in every aspect of his life that he has forgotten his own morals and duty. The tone of the novel is light, satirical, and vivid.

In this great book, the author deeply elaborates her point about love and marriage. Therefore, in order to analyze these points of views, we should firstly start from her great work.

“At that time, according to the social conditions in Britain, a good marriage for a young woman was critical. This phenomenon was closely associated with the British society and the status of woman and man. Women were considered to be inferior to men in terms of intelligence and capacity. The central life of women was forced to be staying at home; their roles were to deal with the family affairs, such as taking care of the children and serving for the husband.” (Zhu,1995:34)

People usually thought that women should be submissive to their husbands. The virtues of women were patient and deferential. Although the status of women was low, few of them expressed dissatisfaction about their own destiny. At that time, many middle-class young women had three options:getting married; staying at home as old maids or working as the family female teachers. The income of family female teacher was very low, and the status was low as well. It was difficult for women to change or escape this status; no o ne would like to be a maid or being single all one’s life (the current circumstance forced them to think so). Therefore, in terms of young women, especially those who didn’t have enough properties, to get married was the only way for them to gain respect, stability and social status.

Austen presented four marriages in Pride and Prejudice, in which she also satirized the bad phenomena, like marriage based on money and social status. Through the four marriages, Austen clearly showed her point of view on marriage and love.

2.The Four Marriages and the Revealed Concept of Love and Marriage in Pride and Prejudice

The stories are about the ordinary lives, and the ordinary feelings. The work mainly describes four marriages. Two are the main and the other two are the

secondary.

“Darcy and Elizabeth’s love and marriage is the main theme of this work. After undergoing many setbacks, Darcy’s arrogance and Elizabeth’s prejudice eventually eliminate, the lovers finally get married. The marriage of Elizabeth’s sister Jane an d Darcy’s friend Bingley is another clue. They deeply love each other, but they are multi-blocked, after their departure, Jane misses Bingley very much. The two marriages reflect another point of view in a positive way that marriage should be based on true love, which is the ideal marriage in the author’s opinion. However, the marriage between Charlotte and Collins is an indifferent marriage; while marriage between Lydia and Wickham is a faulty marriage, which helps to make the plots more tortuous and riche r.”(Zhu,1985:12)

2.1 Charlotte and Collins

In Pride and Prejudice, the first part is the marriage of Charlotte and Collins, whose marriage is natural but indifferent. They get married without any expectation. Charlotte is William Lucas’s daughter, who is the neighbor of Lizzy Bennett. She is born in a poor family and very mediocre in every aspect. So she has not got married even until she is 26 years old. She may be a typical questionable girl. “However, there are five daughters in the Bennett’ family. The five daughters are gradually growing up to the age for marriage. So both of the two families rival mutually, especially in the eyes of the ordinary women, such rivalry was particularly tedious; she does not give birth to a boy but five girls. The family’s property couldn’t be given to a daughter according to the custom at that time, and the family without a son can grant the wealth to the nephew. So one of Bennett nephews--Collins can inherit the family wealth. Therefore, Mrs. Bennett has great expectations on her nephew. Though the family is not so rich. Collins is the only one who can inherit the whole property. For this reason, Mrs. Bennett feels at ease, and then she has great hope on Collins and likes him. With the hope of one of his relatives, Collins becomes a priest. And then he goes to his uncle’s home, wanting to be one son-in-law of Bennett. Because he has hears a lot about the situation of the five daughters of his uncle’s family; he is coming to try his

luck here. In his mind, if he could be one son-in-law of his uncle’s, then he could get the property of the family. At first, he suggests ,Mrs. Bennett that the 26-year old Jane has captured his attention. After informed that the eldest daughter Jane has a boyfriend, he thinks that the second daughter Elizabeth would be an agreeable alternative. Eventually, Elizabeth refuses him with sharp tongue. But Collins quickly finds comfort from Charlotte who desires to get married and believes that the marriage is the only way for her to gain respect and also is the only ending of a woman. And then they get married as quickly as the lightning. A mediocre love, a dull marriage has been established easily. Such marriage is superficial without love in it. It was a practical marriage without happiness.

2.2 Lydia and Wickham

The second marriage is between Benette’s third daughter Lydia and Wickham, the son of the housekeeper of Mr.Darcy. At first, he is well-treated by the family and the friends. However, he comes down in the world because of his misbehavior. He gets into debt. He is a man without any responsibility. He wants to get married in order to become rich so he can change his social status. In his opinion, love is only recreation. For his purpose ,he entices Lydia who is young, innocent and vainglorious.“ Lydia, with perfect indifference, continued to express her admiration of Caption Carter, and her hope of seeing him in the course of the day, as he was going the next morning to London.”(Austen, 1813: 58) Lydia hates to work hard, and is spoilt by her mother, and getting love and praise of a boy is her dream. So Wickham gets to love easily.“When Wickham wants to reach his aim--getting wealth by love and exalts her beauty hypocritically, she forgets who she is and feels she is the most beautiful and happies t girl in the world.” (Fu, 2002: 43) Their love does not get the permission from the parents, and then they elope. As Lydia is young and empty-minded, she never gives love a serious and proper consideration, so when Elizabeth hears the news, she believes that their love is false, Wickham would not marry Lydia, because she is not charming and has nothing to attract him, and he is only fond of the wealth of her family. They don’t understand the real meaning of marriage; they only want to satisfy their aspirations. So we can say this is a kind of

love and marriage without true love and responsibility. Such a couple only wants the present happiness but not everlasting and unchanging. Of course, such kind of marriage is doomed to be a tragedy.

2.3 Jane and Mr. Bingley

The third marriage is of the eldest daughter Jane and Mr. Bingley. Bingley is a friend of Darcy. “ Mr.Bingley had soon made himself acquainted with all the principle people in the room, he was lively and unreserved, danced every dance, was angry that the ball closed so early, and talked of giving one himself at Netherfield. Such amiable qualities must speak for themselves.”(Austen, 1813: 79) And Jane “her look and manners were opening, cheerful and engaging as ever, but without any symptom of peculiar regard, and I remained convinced from the evening, that though she received his attentions with pleasure, she did not invite them by any participation of sentiment.”(Austen, 1813: 127) Under the influence of Mr. Darcy, Bingley begins to doubt Jane’s affe ction to him; he leaves her without saying good-bye. Later, when all the misunderstandings have been solved, he comes back to Jane with Darcy’s help. The marriage of the able man Bingley and the beautiful girl-Jane is ideal in most people’s eyes. Of course, the couple meets many setbacks, such as the misunderstanding of Darcy and Bingley’s selfish sister. At last, the lovers get married as the misunderstanding between Elizabeth and Darcy has been solved.

2.4 Darcy and Elizabeth

The fourth marriage is the ma in theme of the work. That is Darcy and Elizabeth’s marriage. In the beginning, Elizabeth rejects the pursuer-Darcy, because she does not like him, even looks down upon him though Darcy loves her very much. In Elizabe th’s eyes , he is arrogant and unreason able because he is rich and has high social status. Realizing that, Darcy begins to get rid of those bad habits quietly to meet her taste and make a good impression on her. Because of Darcy’s perfect behavior and good education, Elizabeth gradually eliminates the bias on Darcy. Then they spontaneously fall in love. So when Darcy shows his love to Elizabeth again, Elizabeth accepts, and they get married and have a happy family life.

The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth reveals the characteristics that

constitute a successful marriage. One of these characteristics is that the feeling cannot be brought on by appearances, and must gradually develop between the two people as they get to know one another. In the beginning, Elizabeth and Darcy were distant from each other because of their prejudice. The series of events which they both experienced gave them the opportunity to understand one another and the time to reconcile their feelings for each other. Thus, their mutual understanding is the foundation of their relationship and will lead them to a peaceful and lasting marriage. This relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy reveals the importance of getting to know one’s partner before marrying.

3.The Different Understanding about Love and Marriage in Pride and Prejudice

3.1 The Marriage Based on Feelings of Love

Bingley and Jane’s marriage is based on love and rational respect. Jane is the handsomest of the Bennet’s daughters that is why she is the daughter Mrs. Bennet had the highest hopes for. She is humble and unassuming. In a partner, she looks for sensibility, good humor and liveliness. Bingley is rather impressive. He has pleasant countenance and easy affected manner. He is easygoing and much influenced by his best friend, Mr. Darcy. When he proposes to Jane, he does this after Darcy gives his consent. They both are kind, nice, and optimistic people. They always see the bright side of things. Mr. Bennet thinks the couple is so nice and easygoing that people might take advantage of them. We later see that the W ickham’s do take advantage. They spend long periods of time in their house and Lydia often writes to Jane asking for money.

On the first ball organized by Mr. Bingley in the Niger Park, Jane--the eldest daughter of the Bonnets’ is favored by the host. But the reserved personality makes her show nothing to Mr.Bingley , so she almost loses Bingley, which also makes her feel sad and regret. For example, Mrs.Bennet often gives comments on the marriage in public, especially on the benefits of the marriage, which almost frightens Bingley away. This good marriage based on love feelings between lovers. They both make a

good impression on each other. This love is based on true feelings.

3.2 The Marriage Based on Vanity and Carelessness

Lydia is impulsive, credulous and blindly following. She is so temperamental that she cries bitterly when she hears the red-coated officials would leave the local town and rejoices when some new red-coated officials come in. Wickham, the man without any responsibility, wants to chase Lydia mostly for fun. Lydia elopes with Wickham because of an impulse. They spend money without restraint, and they are unable to make ends meet. For sake of Elizabeth, Darcy gives them a sum of money, so they can get out of difficulties. At the same time, this swindler prepares to climb another woman for a sum of money. Clearly, this couple’s marriage is unfortunate caused by vanity and carelessness.

3.3 The Marriage Based on Money or Benefit

Although Mrs. Bennet has been described as a comedy character in the work gaining a lot of sarcasm and derision, her universally acknowledged truth--all the wealthy bachelors want to marry a lady--has been proves to be truth which proves another fact that it’s the wealth and the number of the wealth that decide the fate of life and marriage. (Xin, 2009: 17)

Charlotte knows that the marriage without property would eventually end up with disappointment and suffering.when Collins is rejected by Elizabeth, he immediately turns to Miss Charlotte. Although Collins is a foolish priest, and he cannot gain a woman’s love, Charlotte accepts him, because her only purpose is to get married. Almost all the girls born in a poor family without good education always think marriage is the only way to get descent, although there is no true love in marriage. She selects the most reliable way by marriage, thus she would not be exposed to the cold temperatures and suffers hunger in the future. She mow gets home.

“Charlotte is like a hunter catching a fairly plump fish--Collins.”(He,2001:45)But if he doesn’t meet a setback from Elizabeth, and the encouragement of Charlotte,I am afraid that he would not be so willing to propose marriage to Charlotte. The man like Bingley who has numerable money needs a beautiful wife, the poor man

needs a wife with a huge wealth, like Wickham; It was lucky for Charlotte that she could gain the marriage with Collins although their marriage is not happy at all.

In these marriages, it is quite interesting that the women with poor background really get married with those rich bachelors. But not all the marriages are filled with happiness. In marriage, money is very important. Collins is the heir of Bonnet family; he doesn’t know what love is. He would state some of the inappropriate remarks at any time. Charlotte gets married for money. Eventually she gets nothing but a rich man, though she has economic security. She doesn’t care about her husband’s accompanying and love. She encourages him to clean up the garden more. She sets his living-room in the small house absent of even a small number of sunshine. When her husband makes a scene in front of their friends, she ignores and turns a deaf ear. Such arrangement for the story is a perfect irony for “the truth universally acknowledged” at the beginning of the novel. The author expresses great sympathy to the tragic fate of the women at that time and those who had to marry because of economics restraints by the description of the marriage of Charlotte.

Austen understands completely that the social environment makes man obey not only in material but in psychology, which proves that Austen is a rational author that she prefers true love to survival.

Miss Bingley also extremely objects to the marriage between her brother and Bennet’s eldest daughter Jane. She hopes that her brother will marry Darcy’s sister Miss Geovgiana in order to make herself have the same status.

3.4 The Marriage Based on True Love

“Elizabeth is the ideal image for women. She is Bonnet’s second daughter, an active, intelligent and smart girl. She has a middle-class family background and has not been affected by the tra ditional concept that most girls have. She isn’t good at music and painting, but she has read many books, which make her knowledgeable and perceptive.”(Fu, 2002: 64)The most important aspect is that she is a lady with dignity and upbringing. Darcy is a man with high status and good manner. He is handsome, rich and powerful. So he is the ideal husband of most girls. But he has grown up in the surroundings with a strong sense of power, so he is always selfish and arrogant, and

he has a critical look at each individual, except the family members; he is not concerned about anyone else, and looks down upon anyone else. Therefore, when he first arrives in the village, he finds all the persons are far away from those imagined. Although every girl there is young and lovely, he has no interest in anyone except Elizabeth. At first he doesn’t put an eye on Elizabeth. Gradually, he has to admit that Elizabeth is beautiful, distinct and popular, although he insi sts that Elizabeth hasn’t the same social status as he does. Darcy is rational because he has a strong sense of power, which agrees on the reality at that time. Although he expresses his love to Elizabeth, he couldn’t help showing his arrogance, which make s Elizabeth have misconception and prejudice on Darcy. Darcy loves Elizabeth, but looks down upon her social status. He considers that he has been lowing himself and doing something against his will, personalities and even moral standard. He thinks that his marriage would certainly succeed and Elizabeth is waiting for him to propose marriage.

Therefore, even he is irresistible to the flooding feelings, and condescends to Elizabeth, he still remembers the gap between them. Clearly, the rational aspect of Dar cy’s personality performs on the realities of society. When he talks about his feelings of love, he also expresses the arrogance of these feelings in details, which results in the arousing resentment of Elizabeth; she rejects his marriage proposal, and angrily accuses his insolence. The rational aspect of the heroine Elizabeth shows her clear, calm and actually stressful personality. “compares with her stupid mother, the smooth and lazy father, the shallow-minded, self-willed sister with feather head, Elizabeth is one with ideal mind. She is elegant like her sister Jane, but more intellectually superior unlike her sister being easy to be favorable.”(London,2007:23)She also advises her sister to see through the stupidity and nonsense of these camouflage honest persons.

Elizabeth is unique, because she has a deep understanding of all the things around her. In fact both she and Darcy are extremely sensitive to the social status. Different from Darcy, Elizabeth doesn’t have superiority about her family background and status. Instead, she feel deeply ashamed for her sister’s being lack of fairly education and her mother’s rudeness and stupidity. Compared with her moderate

and generous sister Jane, she is smarter and even more profound. She has a clear understanding about her own social status. Because of this, she resists the arrogance of Darcy, and she tries her best to protect herself from being hurt by Darcy’s commanding attitude. “She believes that she must make him understand that she is not woozy, which reflects her belief to deal with the emotional entanglements with Darcy, as well as her constant patter with Darcy and the prejudice on Darcy.” (Penn, 2007: 15)It seems to be shared by the traditional psychological requirement that everyone needs to be respected mutually. Mutually speaking, this is another form of expression about the awareness of status. Perhaps, to some extent, Darcy has more romantic temperament than Elizabeth; it is because he is better positioned than her. Elizabeth refuses the stupid priest Collins and challenges wealthy Darcy, all of this is actually the resistance of the prevailing marriage at that time. The ultimate failure makes Darcy wake up.He is aware of his own short-comings.He accepts Elizabeth’s criticism, and faithfully corrects the shortcomings and mistakes. He is no longer arrogant and has a real love with Elizabeth.

When we see the blame from heart, we find her shortcomings and courage. It is her bringing that plays a role; she starts to give up the bias caused by self-esteem, and truly and seriously understand Darcy. When the sister asks how she would love Mr.Darcy, Elizabeth replies that she should date from the day she sees the beautiful lane manor park. The statements seems to refer to the property of Darcy. “ Therefore, Jane doesn’t want the sisters to be kidding. In addition to referring to the specific manor, she also refers to the new Darcy seen in the garden.”(Zhu, 1985: 67) In other words, Darcy changes the attitude of being arrogant and rudest, and this is the reason wh y Darcy wins Elizabeth’s heart and love. We can imagine that if Darcy doesn’t change his mind, even if other misunderstandings have been resolved, they would not fall in love forever.

4.Conclusion

There are a lot of novels talking about marriage in Britain, but scarcely an author could be like Austen, exposing the money-essence of capitalism marriage system so

deeply. In brief, it is money that determines everybody’s life and fate, especially marriage. As for its pragmatic meaning, it could be forceful and penetrating. No wonder that David Dax, a western Marxiam critic said, in the aspect of exposing “the economics of human beings’ behavior”, Jane Austen, “to some extent, had been a Marxist before Marx’s being born.”

Marriage and marriage-related activities in the Pride and Prejudice are a series of humorous descriptions; how man picks up his wife and how the young women and their mothers choose their future husbands constitute many wonderful scenes of the novel. In this marital relationship study work the writer strives to portray several different marriages and love relationships. Although they have entered the marriage under siege, the degree of happiness of marriage is different. This is because in Jane Austen’s work, love is not the only reason for marriage, money is also closely related.

By description and discussion of the four marriages in the novel, we can see that Austen fully expresses her views on love and marriage. She not only describes the marriage founded on the basis of mutual understanding and true love, but also the marriage founded on the basis of origin and desire. Although her marriage life is a blank paper without finding a partner, she really has a keen eye on the nature of marriage.

The marriage based on social position and money can’t bri ng happiness to life. Marriage life is actually supported by harmonious relationship and stable affection between lovers. In the work, many women get married under stress of survival or the public voice. But nowadays, such situation has changed. Certainly, both modern women and old women all yearn for love eagerly, and modern women are even stronger than old ones. But there is a difference, the purpose that most of them pursue love is to enjoy love, and no longer to be admitted their “status” by marriage.

T he paper tells the marriage based on Austen’s views on marriage and love, which is also suitable for our real society. We youth should make good choices when we face love and marriage.

傲慢与偏见婚姻观 main meaning: Marriage is the central topic in Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Emma: the plots of the novels and the actions of the characters revolve around marriage. For Austen's characters, marriage does not mean the act of ungoverned passion but a complex engagement between the marrying couple and society. Austen's characters are completely integrated into society and play out the stories within the social rules. Based on Socialist-feminism, this thesis examines social background in Austen's time and explores how social conditions influence females' psychological struggle and anxiety toward marriage. For Socialist-feminists, material factors shape women's marital consciousness in determinate ways. The discussions of male class and female status in the end of the eighteenth century are helpful for understanding why marriage is the central topic in Austen's novels. In a sense, marriage is regarded as a market place to exchange upward class mobility and financial support for Austen's characters.

[Abstract]Generally speaking, the“Pride and Prejudice” and “Mourning” the male and the female are breaking the ideological oppressiveness of the era,and take efforts to seek their own happiness.Butsavoringthetwo very different, the former Elizabeth is thorough, decisive, while the latter suZijun is a compromise than a rational ;the two actors all have their own ideas and ambitions tobreak the secular concept, but the former to recognize theconsequencesof his own narrogance, and he has courage to determin tocorrect, but unfortunatelyJuansheng puts life’s misfortune due to combining with Zijun, and he is selfish and incompetent. The former accompany forever with eacherhappily, while the latter’s marriage end in Zijun depression and succumb,Juansheng repents at leisure. In this paper,I select this visual angle to comparison and analysis of the role of women in the two works.

It was written in 1813. That specific history time decided that people at that time took money much more seriously, even on their marriage. From the ancient times to the present, there are many studies about Jane Austen and her major works. In 1813, Oxford World's Classics for the first time recorded and published the work Pride and Prejudice and aroused great repercussion around the world. Then, in 1826 after the work has been widely read, Sir Walter Scott analyzed Pride and Prejudice from an overall perspective. An Analysis of the Design of the First Assembly in Pride and Prejudice [Abstract] In Pride and Prejudice, the first assembly is the stage of the debut of hero, Darcy and the heroine, Elizabeth. Therefore, the design of this assembly, including which part of the assembly should be narrated directly in the description of the assembly, how to do with other things happened during the party, how to shape the characteristics and personality of the two main characters as well as other important role on the assembly, is essentially significant to the character portrait for the whole novel. Mainly employing description of language and technique of comparative description, the plot about this assembly is well-designed as three parts, before, during and after the assembly, which is efficient to the character figuring of the novel. [Keywords] character figuring, design, description of language, comparative description The novel introduces the first assembly in Chapter 3, using only half of a chapter to directly describe things happened on the party while two other whole chapter to show people’s discussion on it. By the delicate design, vivid language description and useful comparative description, the description of this party is highly efficient to the chapter portrait of this novel. Before the party, Mrs. Bennet’s worry about Mr. Bingley’s going into the town is showed, which totally reveals the purpose of Mrs. Bennet’s participating in the dinner, again echoing the description of Mrs. Bennet’s saying "If I can but see one of my daughters happily settled at Netherfield, and all the others equally well married, I shall have nothing to wish for." (Austen, 2001: 2) at former plot. In the case, the assembly is platform to looking for sweetheart, love and even possible marriage (Yang, 91). At the end of this paragraph, Mr. Bingley’s invitating his sisters and Darcy leads to the appearance of these important characters. For the description of things happened during the party, instead of using scene description to the setting of the ball or psychological description to the participators, language description organized by comparative technique is mainly employed to mould different personality of different participant. First of all, It can be directly seen that the description of Mr. Hurst’s and Mr. Darcy’s first appearance is put in the same paragraph and connected by the conjunction “but”, saying “Mr. Hurst, merely looked the gentleman; but his friend Mr. Darcy soon drew the attention of the
