Brief introduction

William James was an American philosopher and psychologist. He was the first educator to offer a psychology course in the United States, and one of the leading thinkers of the late nineteenth century. He also was one of the most influential philosophers the United States has ever produced, and others have labelled him the "Father of American psychology". He was one of the founders of functional psychology and pragmatism (Charles Sanders Peirce and John Dewey).

Born into a wealthy family, James was the son of the Swedenborgian theologian Henry James Sr and the brother of both the prominent novelist Henry James, and the diarist Alice James. (《鸽翼》The Wings of the Dove 《金碗》The Golden Bowl 《美国人》The American)

William James wrote a lot of work throughout his life.

These books are his masterpieces in psychology and philosophy.

He gained widespread recognition with his monumental The Principles of Psychology《心理学原理》(1890), totaling twelve hundred pages in two volumes, which took twelve years to complete.

The Principles of Psychology was a vastly influential textbook which summarized the field of psychology through the time of its publication. Psychology was beginning to gain popularity and acclaim in the United States at this time.

This philosophical doctrine holds that the test of the truth of a proposition is its practical utility, that is, experimental effects or observation results. It asserts that truth is relative to the time, place, and purpose of investigation.
