PartⅡReading Comprehension

Passage 1

31.答案D

解析:文章第二段提到what follows that “but”can render the apology ineffective: “I had a bad day”or “your noise was giving me a headache”leaves the person who has been injured

feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior in expecting an apology。

32.答案B

解析:根据第三段的“I am sorry you are upset ,this suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done.

33.答案C

解析:第三段提到“Then there is the general, all covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that was particularly hurtful or insulting, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again.

Passage 2

第二段最后一句“large companies, especially, like a background of formal education coupled with work experience”指出了“很多大公司倾向于雇用既有正规的教育背景又有工作经脸的人才”因此选项C符合题意。

(The MBA may open doors and command a higher salary initially...)。 Although companies tend to take on specialists as new hires, they often seek out generalists for middle and upper level management.

38.答案A

第四段最后一句“They want someone who isn't constrained(限制)by nuts and bolts to look at the big picture,” says Scheetz .

39.答案A

从第五段第五行(they have a less than-canned way of doing things)可知David Birch只雇用学文科的毕业生是因为他们不呆板,不教条,正好与前面的“?open-mindedness and adaptability, and the ability to analyze and solve problems.”

Passage 3

41.答案A

After driving many of the animals around them to near extinction, people were forced to abandon their old way of life for a radically new survival strategy that resulted in widespread starvation and disease.

Researchers have begun to piece together an illuminating picture of the powerful geological and astronomical forces that have combined to change the pl ante’s environmen t from hot to cold, wet to dry and back again over a time period stretching back hundreds of millions of years.

在第二段的开头即提出了会议的内容,提到了“those changes have transformed human existence”;第三段的第一句话重申了这个主题,说“th e climatic changes have had a major impact on the evolution of the human species”,这句话倒过来即是本题题干加上选项C的意思。

Indeed, the human history has not been merely touched by global climate change, some scientists argue, it has in some instances been driven by it.?

Passage 4

This has been caused by the advance of the legal age for going into industry and the impossibility of finding a job even when the legal age has been reached,可知学生数量增多的原因是学生进入工作的合法年龄提高了,C表达的正是此意.

48.答案B

解析:根据第二段的分析可知“We have developed and shall continue to have a new leisure class 我们已经有了,并且将继续保有一个新的休闲阶层”是导致成人教育公立机构以后的日子不好过的原因。

49.答案A

The answer to the problem of unemployment has been Federal relief. The answer to the problem of public education may have to be much the same, and properly so.

50.答案A

Part Ⅲ

Part Ⅳ中译英

Arnold Toynbee has said that all progress and all development come from a challenge and a consequent response. Without challenge there is no response, no development and no freedom. So first we ought to open up the most demanding and challenging curriculum for our children that is within their capabilities.

The second opportunity we can give our children is the right to failure .What kind of a test is it and what kind of freedom is it, when no one can fail. We live in a more and more narrowed world where we must be awake to realism; and realism demands a standard which either must be successful or abortive. They are hard words, but they are brutally true. If we deprive our children of the right to fail, we deprive them of their knowledge of the world as it is

Part ⅤWriting

How to live a meaningful life

As we all know, it is essential for us to live a meaningful life in the world. However, as to the meaning of life, different people hold different opinions. After all, the value of life varies with different people. Some people may regard money as his value of life. The more money he owns, the more meaningful his life is. Some take knowledge as his value of life. The more knowledge he acquires, the more meaningful his life is.

While, as far as I am concerned, the value of life consists in many aspects in addition to money and knowledge. For example, health is also a kind of life value. So people should practice more exercise and build a strong body to make our life meaningful. Besides,a simple life is a life value. By simplifying your life, you’ll have more time to do what fulfills you and gives your life meaning. It can also help reduce stress and make your overall life easier to manage.

As for me, in order to live a meaningful life, I shall acquire more knowledge to make me smart and do more exercise to make me healthy. What’s more, making friends is an indispensable part of life, so I will go out to meet more people and exchange ideas with them.

1)Sign has become a scientific hot button. Only in the past 20 years have specialists in language study realized that signed languages are unique—a speech of the hand. They offer a new way to probe how the brain generates and understands language, and throw new light on an old scientific controversy: whether language, complete with grammar, is something that we are born With, or whether it is a learned behavior. The current interest in sign language has roots in the pioneering work of one rebel teacher at Gallaudet University in Washington, D. C., the world’s only liberal arts university for deaf people. When Bill Stokoe went to Gallaudet to teach English, the school enrolled him in a course in signing. But Stokoe noticed something odd: among themselves, students signed differently from his classroom teacher. Stokoe had been taught a sort of gestural code, each movement of the hands representing a word in English. At the time, American Sign Language (ASL) was thought to be no more than a form of pidgin English But Stokoe believed the “hand talk” his students used looked richer. He wondered: Might deaf people actually: have a genuine language? And could that language be unlike any other on Earth? I t was 1955, when even deaf people dismissed their signing a s “substandard”. Stokoe’s idea was academic heresy It is 37 years later. Stokoe—now devoting his time to writing and editing books and journals and to producing video materials on ASL and the deaf culture—is having lunch at a cafe near the Gallaudet campus and explaining how he started a revolution. For decades educators fought his idea that signed languages are natural languages like English, French and Japanese. They assumed language must be based on speech, the modulation (调节) of sound. But sign language is based on the movement of hands, the modulation of space. “What I said,” Stokoe explains, “is that language is not mouth stuff—it’s brain stuff.” 21. The study of sign language is thought to be _____C___. A) a new way to look at the learning of language B) a challenge to tradi t ional, views on the nature of language C) an approach: to simplifying the grammatical structure of a language D) an attempt to clarify misunderstanding about the origin of language(C) 22. The, present growing interest in sign language was stimulated by ___C_____. A) a famous scholar in the study of the human brain B) a leading specialist in the study of liberal arts C) an English teacher in a university for the deaf D) some senior experts in American Sign Language(C) 23. According to Stokoe, sign language is _____B___. A) a Substandard language B) a genuine language C) an artificial language D) an international language(B)

General English Admission Test For Non-English Major Ph.D. program (Harbin Institute of Technology) Passage One Questions 1-7 are based on the following passage: According to a recent theory, Archean-age gold-quartz vein systems were formed over two billion years ago from magmatic fluids that originated from molten granitelike bodies deep beneath the surface of the Earth. This theory is contrary to the widely held view that the systems were deposited from metamorphic fluids, that is, from fluids that formed during the dehydration of wet sedimentary rocks. The recently developed theory has considerable practical importance. Most of the gold deposits discovered during the original gold rushes were exposed at the Earth’s surface and were found because the y had shed trails of alluvial gold that were easily traced by simple prospecting methods. Although these same methods still leas to an occasional discovery, most deposits not yet discovered have gone undetected because they are buried and have no surface expression. The challenge in exploration is therefore to unravel the subsurface geology of an area and pinpoint the position of buried minerals. Methods widely used today include analysis of aerial images that yield a broad geological overview, geophysical techniques that provide data on the magnetic, electrical, and mineralogical properties of the rocks being investigated, and sensitive chemical tests that are able to detect : the subtle chemical halos that often envelop mineralization. However, none of these high-technology methods are of any value if the sites to which they are applied have never mineralized, and to maximize the chances of discovery the explorer must therefore pay particular attention to selecting the ground formations most likely to be mineralized. Such ground selection relies to varying degrees on conceptual models, which take into account theoretical studies of relevant factors. These models are constructed primarily from empirical observations of known mineral deposits and from theories of ore-forming processes. The explorer uses the models to identify those geological features that are critical to the formation of the mineralization being modeled, and then tries to select areas for exploration that exhibit as many of the critical features as possible. 1. The author is primarily concerned with . A. advocating a return to an older methodology. B. explaining the importance of a recent theory. C. enumerating differences between two widely used methods D. describing events leading to a discovery 2. According to passage, the widely held view of Archean-age gold-quartz vein

( 一 般 不 会 考 ) 二、在本学期的学习中,有如下的古典假定: (1)强外生性(|)0i E ε=X ;(2)球型扰动2 (|)Var Cov εσ-=X I ; (3)弱外生性(,|)0ji i Cov x ε=X ;(4)满秩()Rank k =X ;(5)正态性2~(0,)i N εσ。 解答:(1)零均值,即() (|)0,|0i ij i E Cov x εε=?=X X ; (2)同方差与无自相关假定,即随机扰动项的方差2 (|)T Var εσ=X I ; (3)随机扰动项与解释变量不相关,即(,|)0ji i Cov x ε=X ; (4)无多重共线性,即各解释变量之间线性无关,()Rank k =X ; (5)正态性假定,即2~(0,)i N εσ。
