伦敦大学教授英译《红楼梦》。《红楼梦》是中国的旷世巨著，大陆、香港、台湾都曾改编拍成电影，家喻户晓。50年代大陆拍摄的《红楼梦》在香港创下了连映二百多天的纪录，至今仍未有一部电影可以打破该纪录。
五四运动后不少白话文作家都歌颂过《红楼梦》这部伟大的小说。红学专家，风起云涌，人才辈出；红学佳作，淙淙汩汩，源源不绝。
五六十年代多位中外学者就曾经把《红楼梦》英译，介绍到西方国家去，但由于种种问题，都只是节译而已。
直至70年代有一位牛津大学的讲座教授霍克思(David Hawks)，竟然不惜辞去职务，专心埋首于全部《红楼梦》的英译。他的译笔功力深邃，英文写得非常流畅。

"My one abiding principle has been to translate everything-even puns. For although this is ,in the sense I have already indicated, an 'unfinished' novel, it was written (and written) by a great artist with his very life blood. I have therefore assumed that whatever I find in
it is there for a purpose and must be dealt with somehow or other, I cannot pretend always to have done so successfully, but if I can convey to the reader even a fraction of the pleasure this Chinese novel given me , I shall not have lived in vain."
中国曹雪芹英国霍克思
撰写《红楼梦》这部旷世巨著的曹雪芹，堪称中国文学史的奇才，数十年来无数作家学者都把这部经典名作奉为圭臬，推崇备至。
70年代著名学者胡菊人先生在其专栏里就写过这样一段话：“在技巧上我们可以说自清末至'五.四'直至今天，在中国而言，无人能与曹雪芹并肩。他的技巧，尤其在肌理上，细心研究，令人惊骇，以为是神鬼写下的文墨。”
曹雪芹如果九泉下有知，欣悉二百余年后西洋竟然出了另一位奇才，连大学教授的高职也辞去，在家中孜孜不倦十五载，把他的作品全部译成蟹形文字，介绍到西方国家，必定会含笑引为同调！

《红楼梦》翻译研究综述
摘要：《红楼梦》作为中国的四大名著之一，已经被翻译成了英、法、德、日、韩、俄、泰、西班牙等多种译本。随着外语研究及翻译研究的发展，学者们对《红楼梦》各种版本的语言翻译、文化翻译、译本对比等方面进行了大量的研究。本文主要对目前国内《红楼梦》翻译研究做了大体回顾，从语用学、修辞学、文化等方面对翻译研究现状进行了梳理和总结，指出了目前《红楼梦》翻译研究存在的问题，提出今后《红楼梦》翻译研究可能的领域与途径。 关键词：《红楼梦》翻译语用学修辞学文化 《红楼梦》作为中国的四大名著之一，已经被翻译成了英、法、德、日、韩、俄、泰、西班牙等多种译本。海外的《红楼梦》译本有摘译、节译、全译三种形式。虽然《红楼梦》已有多种语言的全译本，但是从目前国内的翻译研究来看，却只涉及到三种语言的版本。英译本的研究最多，占所有研究的90%以上，俄语、法语、德语、日语、韩语版本的研究虽有涉及，但都总计不过十余篇。主要有成蕾的《“潇湘馆”里的“潇湘妃子”――〈红楼梦〉两个法译本中建筑专名的语义层级分析及其翻译策略选择》（《译林（学术版）》2011年第3期）；郭玉梅的《〈红楼梦〉法译本传统文化内涵的翻译策略》（《天津外国语学院学报》2009年5月）、《从〈红楼梦〉法译本看汉语歇后语的翻译》（《法语学习》2011年第3 期）；森中美树的《简述日译〈红楼梦〉之难点――以平冈龙城〈国译红楼梦〉为例》（《红楼梦学刊》2011年第3辑）；苏德昌的《从红楼梦的日译看“そんな”的感叹词性用法》（《日语学习与研究》1993年第3期）；史华慈与姚军玲的《〈红楼梦〉德译书名推敲》（《红楼梦学刊》2010年第6辑）等。 一、《红楼梦》翻译研究现状评述 （一）《红楼梦》翻译研究总体概述 在进行《红楼梦》翻译研究的内容前，有必要从数量和质量上对其研究的总体状况进行宏观概述，为下面研究内容的归纳和分析提供相关数据。笔者通过CNKI中国知网，输入“红楼梦”及“译”两个关键字，在“中国学术期刊网络出版总库”“中国博士学位论文全文数据库”及“中国优秀硕士学位论文数据库”选择“题名”检索条件，进行模糊检索，得到以下数据。 表1 ■ 从上面的数据来看《红楼梦》翻译方面的研究已经取得了较多的研究成果，特别是近几年来随着更多的相关博士论文及专著的出版，《红楼梦》翻译的研究的范围和质量都有了较大的提升。 （二）《红楼梦》翻译研究状况 1.语用学视觉下的《红楼梦》翻译研究李蓓在《〈红楼梦〉语言学研究综述》（《红楼梦学刊》2011年第4辑）中认为汉语版《红楼梦》中语言学研究主要集中在语言的性质、构成、词汇、词汇系统及对成语、惯用语、歇后语等熟语方面的研究。而目前的翻译研究来看还相对比较单一，主要涉及到词汇、委婉语、习语、典故等方面。《红楼梦》中词汇的翻译研究。从目前的研究来看词汇的翻译研究主要涉及某一类词的翻译。 （1）人名的翻译。王静在《〈红楼梦〉姓名翻译与注释译法》（《河南理工大学学报（社会科学版）》2010年4月）中分析了杨、霍两英译本《红楼梦》的人物命名艺术，提出要忠实地再现《红楼梦》的文化内涵，就必须利用音译法和意译法、运用双关语法和借用法语、拉丁语等方法译出其中姓名的含义。赵丽娟在《金陵十二钗判词中人物姓名的英译本解读――浅谈霍克斯〈红楼梦〉版本主要人物命名》（《语文建设》2013年第6期）中以霍克斯对《红楼梦》译本中人名的翻译为蓝本，以金陵十二钗判词中所暗含的人名含义为研究对象进行阐
