Phone calls cannot handle every aspect of business between companies. Besides, e-mail, the new form of the original letter, is as efficient as phone calls and more detailed at the same time.

Thus, it’s safe to draw a conclusion that it is impossible for phones to kill letter writing. They have, in fact, coexisted well with each other.

There seems to be a fashion nowadays, especially among the young people, to phone each other more often than write letters, which has been the traditional way of communication since the early part of human history.

Nevertheless, I don’t side with the idea that phones are going to kill letter writing.

For one thing, as the main method of communication for most part of the history, letter-writing has a lot of advantages over the product of modern technology—the phone. Time-consuming as it may be, it conveys one’s feelings and emotions much more sincerely and completely than the phone does. The instant excitement caused by a call can never be in a position to rival the spontaneous joy when reading a letter from a devoted friend. For another, although the phone is being put into more frequent use, in many cases a formal or informal letter, rather than a short call, is required. For instance, nobody would consider it appropriate to invite a distinguished guest to a ceremony by simply giving him a call. In such circumstances, the only and the best choice would be no other than to write a letter of invitation.

However, I am not suggesting that we should abandon the phone for

letter-writing. Actually, they are both important to us and neither will kill the other. Diversity of the communication means is just the reflection of the huge progress of human civilization.

People believe that using mobile phones and computers to communicate make us lose the ability to communicate with each other face to face. To what extent do you agree or disagree? We live in a world where smart phones and computers are here to stay. While new technology makes it easier for us to keep in touch with people from far and wide, it also risks weakening our ability to communicate effectively. The proliferation of smart gadgets could in many ways hinder face-to-face communication skills. Start with non-verbal one. According to psychologists, 90% of communication between people is non-verbal, i.e. facial expressions and body language. As a consequence, they may become unfocused and sidetracked during offline conversations. Internet slang also does its bit. Today, youngsters who text with abbreviated forms of words tend to speak with the same acronyms and use internet catchphrases heavily. These forms of talking are often construed as flighty and uneducated, from which misunderstandings ensue. In conclusion, I am convinced that smart phones and computers do more harm than good when it comes to cultivating interpersonal skills. For those who are married to the wizardry of electronic world, turning off their digital gadgets may be the first step in becoming an effective communicator.

A recent survey reveals that the growing number is strikingly high with over double every year. This essay is to discuss why students strive to join the ranks of civil servants and offer my view on this fever. The factors for this fever are complex. First, the post for a civil servant is comparatively securer than working in a company. A government employee may stay in the job for life, free of the fear of being laid off, and enjoy a carefree retired life. Besides, the pay and benefits are very satisfactory. This is vital in a society where bucks are still closely associated w ith a better life. Most important of all, it offers appealing prospects of personal advancement and promotion.
