A

My father left me a treasure when he died. It wasn’t a big house or a car. It wasn’t cash or gold. In the eyes of the world my father died a poor man. He was a simple mechanic who worked hard to support his family. My father’s treasure, rather, was in a thousand wonderful memories that he gave me over the course of his life.

One particular one stood out in my mind today. I was just a boy playing in the backyard of a friend’s house while my father spent the afternoon under the hood (引擎盖) of an old car, trying to get it running again. It seemed to take hours and I wasn’t sure whether he could bring the ancient car back to life again this time. At long last, though, he closed the hood and turned the key in the ignition There was a sweet smile of satisfaction on his face as the engine started. There was a twinkle of joy in his eye when he shook his head. And there was a quiet hum of happiness in his voice as we drove back home that day. This memory made a home in my heart and became a priceless pearl for my soul to cherish.

Time and time again, my father showed me that a kind life, a giving life and a heavenly life was created one choice at a time. Not all of his choices were the right ones, but most of them were. He did the best he could. He lived the best he could. And he helped to bring out the best in me, too. He once said to me, “It is lucky that all of your choices are driven by love and inspired by joy.” As I look back into those memories my father left me, I realize that eac h one of them

inspired me to live and to love. May all of your choices bring memories of happiness to those around you!

B. To bring the right and best choices to family.

C. To make choices in life based on love and happiness.

D. To live a kind and giving life and help others as much as possible.

At the end of a tiring day, all you need is a good 6-8 hours’ sleep. Sleep is mandatory (强制性的) for the body’s proper functioning an d good health. Sleep is not just a “time-out” thing; it’s actually a necessity for renewal of our physical and mental well-being. It’s typical not to get the required amount of sleep once in a while, but when it happens regularly, things might change. You may encounter what is commonly known as a sleep disorder.

A sleep disorder is a condition where an individual is unable to fall asleep, remaining awake. You are suffering from a sleep disorder if you feel exhausted during the day and have issues focusing or possess a tired-looking face. There are several types of sleep disorders.

Commonly known as sleep deprivation (剥夺), insomnia (失眠症) is a common sleeping problem which occurs due to multiple reasons: primarily stress, inappropriate sleeping posture, disturbed sleeping schedule, and others. Some of the signs and symptoms of insomnia include watery eyes, heavy eyes, inability to concentrate, undue yawning, and so on. It is difficult to treat insomnia, especially when there are many factors behind it. It is best to visit a neurologist and get the root cause of the insomnia diagnosed.

Sleep apnea (呼吸暂停) is a condition where the patient wakes up from sleeping due to breathing problems. In sleep apnea, the breathing becomes very weak while the person is asleep. The lack of oxygen forces the person to wake up. There is also constant choking or snoring. Sleep apnea is usually disruptive and common in fat people. In such cases, it is beneficial to exercise and lose excessive weight or alter one’s sleeping position to ensure proper air flow.

Narcolepsy (嗜睡症) is difficult to explain, because despite getting appropriate sleep, people with this disorder are found to be feeling drowsy all the time. They encounter sudden weakness. People with narcolepsy have a tendency to sleep without any kind of warning. Neurologists say that this condition happens due to a lack of functionality of a brain chemical associated with sleep and wakefulness. This can spell danger, as people suffering from narcolepsy can fall asleep while driving, walking, working, exercising, playing, and so on, which makes life

complicated.

59. What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in the first paragraph?

A. Sleep is not an easy thing as we think.

B. Sleep is no more than rest.

60. When someone has insomnia, he _______.

A. might have too much pressure in his life or irregular sleeping time

B. will be yawning all the time and have dried eyes

C. has difficulty in falling asleep but is able to concentrate

D. can alter his sleeping position to relieve the bad effects

61. What can we learn about sleep apnea from the passage?

A. It results from a heart problem.

B. People breathe very fast while they are sleeping.

C. It usually happens in someone who is overweight.

D. It can be cured by doing more exercise and losing weight.

62. According to the last paragraph, people who have narcolepsy ___________.

A. do not feel sleepy after a good rest

B. can suddenly fall asleep with no warning at any time

C. can be cured by taking a kind of brain medicine

D. lack a kind of brain chemical associated with the nerves

Girls who play with Barbie dolls tend to see fewer career options available to them, compared with the options available to boys, according to a new study by researchers at Oregon State University and the University of California (UC), Santa Cruz.

The study’s authors, psychology professors, Aurora Sherman of Oregon State University and Eileen Zurbriggen at UC Santa Cruz, describe their findings as significant. “This is one of the first studies to investigate how playing with sexualized (有性别的)dolls affects young girls, and also one of the first to look at the impact of such play on achievement or career aspirations (愿望), rather than body image,” said Zurbriggen. Sherman suggests that Barbie and simi lar dolls are part of the burden of early and inappropriate sexuality placed on girls.

Sherman and Zurbriggen used girls’ doll play to study the impact of gender role socialization, a process through which children learn to follow cultural norms and which encourages gender stereotypical (约定俗成的) behavior.

Thirty-seven girls from the age of four to seven from an Oregon college town were randomly arranged to play for five minutes with either a sexualized Doctor Barbie or Fashion Barbie doll, or with a more neutral (中性的)Mrs. Potato Head doll. The girls were then shown photographs of ten occupations and asked how many they themselves or boys could do in the future.

The girls who played with a Barbie doll saw themselves in fewer occupations, compared with boys. Those girls who played with Mrs. Potato Head reported nearly as many career options available for themselves as for boys.

The two Barbie dolls were the same except for clothing, with unrealistic bodies, extremely youthful and attractive faces, and long full hair. The researchers believe that the doll itself has

more of an effect on girls than the role or career aspirations suggested by its costume.

“It’s significant that a few minutes of play with a Barbie doll had an immediate impact on the number of careers that girls saw as possible for themselves,” Zurbriggen said. “And it didn’t matter whether the Barbie doll was dressed as a model or as a doctor, suggesting that the doll’s sexualized shape and appearance might have more of an effect than whatever accessories (装饰品)are packaged with her.”

63. What is stressed in the second paragraph?

A. The significance of the study.

B. The method adopted by the study.

C. The process of the study.

D. The purpose of the study.

64. Which of the following are the factors that aff ect girls’ career options, according to the

passage?

①long hair②young faces③the dolls’ costumes ④unrealistic bodies

A. ①②③

B. ①②④

C. ②③④

D. ①②③④

65. From the research, we know that _______.

A. body image has a big influence on girls’ career opti ons

B. playing with dolls affects the academic performance of young children

C. boys who played with a Fashion Barbie doll found more career options than girls

D. doll play was used to study the impact of gender role socialization on girls

66. What is the passage mainly about?

A. That Barbie dolls make girls want to be thin.

B. Why Barbie dolls are the world’s best-selling dolls.

C. That playing with Barbie dolls could limit girls’ career choices.

D. What negative effects Barbie dolls have on young girls in the long term.

D

Education, if looked at beyond its conventional boundaries, forms the very essence (本质)of all our actions. What we do is what we know and have learned, either through instruction or through observation. Nonetheless, the importance of education in society is necessary, which is why society and knowledge cannot be ever separated into two distinct entities.

A good education helps empower (使有能力) you, thus making you strong enough to look after yourself in any given situation. It keeps you aware of your given surrounding as well as the rules and regulations of the society you’re living in. It’s only through knowledge that you are able to question authority for its negligence (疏忽). As a whole, people can bring about development only when they know where improvement is necessary for the greater good of mankind. Education helps you understand yourself better and tap into latent (潜在的) talent, so that you may sharpen your skills.

Another important feature of education is that it helps you gain sufficient academic qualification to get suitable employment at a later stage. Good employment will be combined with a hard-earned salary, through which you can look after your personal expenses. While you earn for yourself, you gradually begin to realize the true worth of money and how hard it is to earn it. You realize the significance of saving for a rainy day and for unforeseeable contingencies, and you feel the need to be independent and free from any further financial support. You take

pride in the fact that you are earning for yourself and are not obligated to anyone.

There also comes a phase when the amount you are earning will seem inadequate because your aspirations and expectations of yourself will have grown considerably. After this, you will want to change jobs so as to have a higher profile. However, here is when you need to be prepared. A promotion of this figure can occur in two given situations: either you have the necessary higher academic qualification or a college degree which allows you to achieve a higher profile, or you have amassed enough practical experience which allows you to be a suitable candidate for the employment you seek.

Education plays a continuous role in all aspects of life. The reason is that if we are aware of the drawbacks of a decision and we know about the possible contingencies and the collateral damage, our consequent actions would be wiser, which would help us to keep danger at bay.

67. What are the advantages of a good education, according to the second paragraph?

① It can provide you with higher academic qualifications.

② It can make you fully understand the rules and regulations of society.

③ It can help you question authority for its bad performance.

④ It can develop your potential and help you to know your self better.

A. ①②③

B. ①②④

C. ①③④

D. ②③④

68. What can you gain when you earn for yourself?

A. Confidence and satisfaction at work.

B. Praise and appreciation from your family.

C. Independence and success in life.

D. Financial stability and dignity in life.

69. The underlined word “contingencies” probably means ________.

A. memorable days

B. meaningful things

C. something that might happen in the future

D. something that will determine your life in the future

70. The author’s purpose in writing thi s passage is to ________.

A. introduce a new reform of education

B. show the importance of education and its effects on our lives

C. describe the features of different countries’ education

D. explain the relationships between education and society

How to Improve Your English

Here are some tips to help you improve English both in how your learn and via the Internet.

Remember that learning a language is a gradual process — it does not happen overnight.

Define your learning objectives early: What do you want to learn and why? Make learning a habit. Try to learn something every day. It is much better to study (or read, or listen to English news, etc.) 10 minutes each day than to study for 2 hours once a week.

71. _______ You will need reading, grammar, writing, speaking and listening materials —Beginners can use a starting English guide, while intermediate to advanced learners can use a continue learning English guide.

Vary your learning routine. 72. _____ In other words, don’t just study grammar. Find friends to study and speak with. Learning English together can be very encouraging — you can find friends to speak English over the Internet.

73. _____ Being interested in the subject will make learning more enjoyable — thus more effective.

Relate grammar to practical usage. Grammar by itself does not help you use the language. You should practice what you are learning by employing it actively.

Move your mouth! Understanding something doesn’t mean the muscles of your mouth can produce the sounds. Practice speaking what you are learning aloud. 74. _____

Be patient with yourself. Remember learning is a process — speaking a language well takes time. It is not a computer that is either on or off!

Communicate! 75. _____ Grammar exercises are good — having your friend on the other side of the world understand your email is fantastic!

Use the Internet. The Internet is the most exciting, unlimited English resource that anyone could imagine and it is right at your finger tips.

A. There are other goals as well, but learning how to speak English will help you communicate

with others.

B. There is nothing like communicating in English and being successful.

C. Choose listening and reading materials that relate to what you are interested in.

D. Depending on your English goals, you can understand your reasons for learning English well.

E. Choose your materials well.

F. It is best to do different things each day to help keep the various relationships between each

area active.

G. It may seem strange, but it is very effective.

During the normal dinner chatter, I noticed that my father was slurring (说话含混)his words. No one mentioned this during dinner, but I felt compelled to discuss it with my mother afterward. We decided that there was something seriously wrong and that Dad needed to see the doctor. Mom phoned me two days later. “The doctor found a brain tumor (肿瘤)?It,s too large at this point to operate. Maybe they can do something then, but the odds are long. ” Even with the treatment, my father’s condition worsened, and the doctor finally informed us that this condition was terminal. During one of his stays in the hospital, we brought our baby daughter Chelsey with us when we visited him. By this time he had great difficulty speaking. I finally figured out that he wanted Chelsey to sit on his stomach so he could make faces at her. Watching the two of them together, I realized I was living an experience that would stay with me forever. Though grateful for the times they could share,I couldn,t shake the feeling of a clock ticking in the background. On the visit to my parents, home during what we all know was my father,s last days, my mother took Chelsey from my arms and announced, “Your father would like to see you alone for a minute. ” I entered the bedroom where my father lay on a rented hospital bed. He appeared even weaker than the day before. “How are you feeling, Dad?”I asked. “Can I do anything for you?” He tried to speak, but he couldn’t make out a word. “I,m sorry, but I can’t understand you,”I said. With great difficulty he said, “I love you. ” We don' t learn courage from heroes on the evening news. We learn true courage from watching ordinary people rise above hopeless situations. In many ways my father was a strict, uncommunicative man. He found it difficult to show emotion. The bravest thing I ever saw him do was overcome that barrier to open his heart to his son and family at the end of his life. 1、Which of the following statements is TRUE?
