Shu Pulong has helped at least 1000 people bitten by snakes. “It was seeing people with snake bit es that led me to this career,” he said.

Every year all sorts of different festivals are celebrated in Britain. Two of the most well- known British festivals are Bonfire Night and Halloween.

Bonfire Night has an interesting history. In 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes and some of his followers tried to blow up the British Houses of Parliament. They hoped that if they succeeded, they could take control of England and become its new rulers. Guy Fawkes and his men dug a tunnel under one of the Parliament buildings, and hid 36 barrels（桶）of gunpowder there. Fortunately, on November 5th, Guy Fawkes was caught just before he was able to light the fuse（导火线）. He and all his followers were burned to death.

Tod ay, people in Britain celebrate Guy Fawkes’ capture by lighting fires and holding fireworks displays.

Halloween is celebrated in Britain on the night of October 31st. There are many customs associated with Halloween. One of these is the game of ‘ trick or treat’. Children, dressed up as witches, ghosts or monsters, knock on their neighbors’ doors, and shout ‘trick or treat!’ If they are lucky, they receive a ‘treat’ – a bar of chocolate, or some sweets or some money. If, however, their neighbors’ refuse to give them anything, they play a trick on them. They might spray their front door with shaving foam（剃须膏）, or knock on their doors and then run away!

You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving．If you give andgive without making time to fill your own needs, then it’s likely you will bum out, or feel upset．When you take and take without giving anything back, you never feel fulfilled, so you are alwayssearching for ways to fill the void in your life．

The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving is to know and then live byyour values．I break values up into two groups which I call being and having values．Your being values are the character traits（特征）of the ideal person you would like to be．I suggest to my clients that they choose three being values that they are willing to make a commitment to live by．An example of some being values are: kind, loving, generous, inspirational, peaceful, wise and even powerful．By acting on these values you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by being a positive role model．Mastering being these character traits becomes your life purpose．

Your having values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy．These could be companionship, achievement, support, being valued or financial security．This is what you receive．You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life．When you make a commitment to live by your being values, it becomes easier to make conscious choices rather than reactionary ones．If your usual pattern is to talk about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person．A calm person might go for a walk, meditate（沉思）, or set a time limit before responding．If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like aresponsible or wise person．In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be -- this isthe key to personal power．

When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, you reinforce（加强）your chosen beliefs．Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn theway other people think of you．

3D comes home

HA VE you had this experience? You are watching a movie. A man is shooting on the screen. The picture is so real that you think he is shooting at you. Or a car is speeding on the screen and at one point you are afraid it will hit you.

Three-dimensional (3D)films use special technology to make pictures seem more real and exciting than two-dimensional ones. Two popular movies in the cinema this year, UP and Ice Age。Dawn of the Dinosaurs both use 3D technology.

So far we can only see 3D films in the cinema with a special screen and projector. But soon, we will be able to watch them in our living rooms. Last month, the Japanese company Sony told reporters that it plans to bring 3D televisions to homes in 2010. The company is also hoping to make other products with 3D, like laptops and PS3.

“The 3D train is on the track, and we are ready to drive it home,” said Sony President Sir Howard Stringer.

How 3D technology works

Three dimensional movies and TV programs are fun to watch, but do you know how they are made? It is much easier to understand if we do an experiment.

Hold one of your fingers up at arms length and close one eye. Then try closing the other eye. As you switch between open eyes you should see your finger “jumping” left and right against the background.

This happens because our two eyes are about 4 cm away from each other. The separation causes each eye to see the world from a different angle. The brain puts these two views together. What you see becomes three-dimensional.

Three dimentional movies are made using two video cameras at the same time, which creates two different images. When the movie plays in a cinema, two projectors put the two images on the screen. With a pair of 3D glasses, the two images are separated and each image only enters one eye. Your brain puts the two pictures back

together, and the pictures on the screen become three-dimensional.
