A

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to see the world through an animal’s eyes? For example, what a chimpanzee sees as it sits at the top of a tree, or a penguin’s view as it dives into the sea to catch its dinner?

These questions are answered in the nature documentary Animals with Cameras, produced by the BBC. The three-part miniseries (迷你剧) was first aired in the UK last month. To explore animal stories “told” by the animals themselves, the documentaries filmmakers worked with scientists to develop cameras that wild animals could wear.

“Never before have we seen such high-quality footage (连续镜头) directly from the animal’s point of view,” BBC Nature executive producer Fred Kaufman told PBS. “This miniseries greatly expands our comprehension of animal behavior and this camera technology opens up new possibilities for discovering so much more.”

Indeed, the groundbreaking technology provides a new perspective of the animal kingdom. New cameras with enough battery life to shoot for hours at a time were designed to be comfortable enough for animals to wear, according to the documentary’s designer Chris Watts.

The technical challenges didn’t stop there. Some animals were very curious about the equipment, with some even fighting each other for the chance to wear a camera. In the case of chimpanzees, “We had to create dummy (伪

造的) cameras, so that every chimpanzee could get one,” the miniseries’ wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan told Live Science.

For animals that were comfortable enough to be with human beings, the cameras could be fitted and removed by hand. But for others, the cameras came off automatically using a timed release and were collected afterward. This meant that the cameras needed to be as tough as possible.

To avoid disturbing the animals, scientist who were good at dealing with wildlife came to help by putting the cameras on the animals. “The last thing we want to do is cause them distress,” the documentary’s producer Dan Rees told the BBC. “To follow an animal in the first place, there had to be a clear benefit in terms of knowledge about it that might be useful to protect a species in the future.”

Their efforts certainly paid off. “Footage that captures these rare and exciting glimpse of animals’ hidden habits is important to scientists, but documentaries like Animas with Camera also resonate (引起共鸣) audiences, connecting them with the beauty --- and peri (危险) --- of wildlife in their natural environments.” Live Scientists noted.

31. According to the text, Animals with Cameras ______.

A. is a documentary made by wildlife experts

B. presents high-quality footage of animals for the first time

C. shows wildlife from the unique perspective of animals

D. mainly records the life of chimpanzees and penguins

32. What does the article say about the new cameras used on the animals?

A. Their long battery life allows them to shoot for several days in a row.

B. They were specially designed to allow the animals to wear them comfortably.

C. They automatically shut down when the school is over.

D. They were found to be not tough enough and came off the animals easily.

33. Why is Animals with Cameras important according to the text?

A. It could help scientists learn more about wild animals’ hidden habits.

B. It has contributed to the discovery of new species.

C. The camera technology shed light on future animal research.

D. It has raised people’s awareness of environmental protection.

B

Once upon a sunny morning, a man who sat in a breakfast nook looked up from his scrambled eggs to see a white unicorn with a golden horn quietly cropping the roses in the garden. The man went up to the bedroom where his wife was still asleep and woke her. “There is a unicorn in the garden,” he said. “Eating roses.” She opened one unfriendly eye and looked at him.

“The unicorn is a mythical beast,” she said, and turned her back on him. The man walked slowly downstairs and

out into the garden. The unicorn was still there; now he was browsing among the tulips. “Here, unicorn,” said the man, and he pulled up a lily and gave it to him. The unicorn ate it gravely. With a high heart because there was a unicorn in his garden, the man went upstairs and waked his wife up again. “The unicorn,” he said, “ate a lily.” His wife sat up in bed and looked at him coldly “You are a booby,” she said, “and I am going to have you put in the booby-hatch.”

The man who had never liked the words “booby” and “booby-hatch,” and who liked them even less on a shiny morning when there was a unicorn in the garden, thought for a moment. “We’ll see about that,” he said. He walked over to the door. “He has a golden horn in the middle of his forehead,” he told her. Then he went back to the garden to watch the unicorn; but the unicorn had gone away. The man sat down among the roses and went to sleep.

As soon as the husband had gone out of the house, the wife got up and dressed as fast as she could. She was very excited and there was a gloat (沾沾自喜) in her eyes. She telephoned the police and she telephoned a- psychiatrist; she told them to hurry to her house and bring a straight-jacket. When the police and the psychiatrist arrived they sat down in chairs and looked at her, with great interest.

“My husband,” she said, “saw a unicorn in the garden this morning. The police looked at the psychiatrist and the psychiatrist looked at the police. “He told me it ate a lily,” she said. The psychiatrist looked at the police and the police looked at the psychiatrist. “He told me it had a golden horn in the middle of its forehead,” she said. At a solemn signal from the psychiatrist, the police leaped from their chairs and seized the wife. They had a hard time subduing (制服) her, for she put up a terrific struggle, but they finally subdued her. Just as they got her into the straight-jacket, the husband came back into the house.

“Did you tell your wife you saw a unicorn?” asked the police. “Of course not,” said the husband. “The unicorn is a mythical beast.” “That’s all I wanted to know,” said the psychiatrist. “Take her away. I’m sorry, sir, but your wife is as crazy as a jay bird.” So they took her away, cursing and screaming, and shut her up in an institution. The husband lived happily ever after.

MORAL: Don’t count your boobies until they are hatched.

C

I was 13 or 14. It was summer. We lived in a raggedy house in the thumb of Michigan with no screens on the window in the attic, where my sister and I slept in the same bed. It was so hot and humid up there that tears of sweat dripped down my neck onto what would one day become cleavage. I got bitten on the arm by two mosquitoes at the same time, and while I sat there in front of a fan that did not oscillate (摆动), I watched the red bumps rise because I was bored.

While thinking about how I might escape, I leaned sideways, and my hand landed on a floorboard that popped up and almost hit me in the head. When I bent over and looked inside the open space, I could not believe my eyes: There was gold in there! I picked up a handful of shiny gold cubes, and I knew there had to be millions of dollars’ worth. I ran to the bottom stair and yelled, “Mama --- I found gold up there under floor!”

Back up the stairs I dashed, but my siblings almost knocked me back down as they ran right by me. When Mama, who had heard me through a floor vent, opened the door and stuck her head in, she simply said, “Chile, that’s insulation (隔热材料). Now put it all back.”

I thought we were going to be free. That we would be able to move out of this dump and we would all have our own rooms with air-conditioning. I thought I had made a real discovery.

When I reached inside to toss the fake gold back, my hand touched like what felt like a book. I pulled it out. It was old and small: Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations. I wondered whom were they supposed to be familiar to, because I’d never heard or this book. What I did knew, thanks to Ms. Rattray, my seventh-grade English teacher, was the correct way to use quotation marks. And since I was bored, I decided to see what was inside this little book.

On the top left-and right-corners of each page was a word or phrase. I opened it to “comfort” and then “comfort and despair,” and then farther down was “comfortable”. Dang. I had just found out what a thesaurus (同义词词典) was, and I could already tell that this was going to be more interesting.

I remember “Doubt.” “Peace.” “Endurance.” “Fate.” “Hope and Hopeful.” “Honor and Honorable.” “Light.” How many connotations (隐含意义) there were for “light” alone! I’d never thought about it any other way except as a lamp or daylight. “Love” had so many pages, and I spent a great deal of time reading about it, since I had never felt it. Phew. “Passion.” “Patience.” “Self-control.” “Security.” “Woman.” “Wishes.” “Woebegone.”

It helped to find out that Mr. Bartlett didn’t feel all these emotions himself. He had gathered up quotations from thousands of other people.

I was relieved to discover that some people were not afraid to express how they felt and what they thought, including their fears. I couldn’t believe that people had so many compelling thoughts and feelings about things that were already starting to plague (困扰) me. I realized I was lonely. That I didn’t know whom to talk to about the world

QQ

and my role in it. What was the point of living? I found myself shoplifting (行窃) to eat something I wouldn’t have to share, even though I knew stealing was wrong. I wanted to know why so many black people were poor. I wanted to get on a bus and an airplane. I wanted to know what a kiss felt like. What winning felt like. What was it going to take for us to get a front porch with steps? A toilet that flushed? Electricity every day? I wanted to know what it was like to go on a vacation. What was I supposed to do with promises that people didn’t keep? I wanted to know whom to tell when my heart hurt and I cried and didn’t understand why.

In ninth grade, I got my first job, as a page at our local library. I often hid in the dumbwaiter or the ladies room, where I would cross my legs so no one would see me sitting in the stall, and I would read. It was at this library that I realized how some of those emotions I’d felt while reading Bartlett’s came to life in the characters I had started discovering in novels.

When I left home to go away to college, Bartlett’s came with me. Over the years, I’ve kept my original copy, and to this day I often refer to it. I have bought a few of the newer edition, but the first one is the one that liberated me, that helped me see more than my young mind and heart were able to understand.

41. The underlined word “page” in the last but one most probably means ______.

The seek for longevity (长寿) has long been on people’s minds, causing a lot of research on the effects of food and diet on the human lifespan; but unlike the usual recommendations --- eat vegetables, have green tea, and such --- here is one you might not have trouble following. According to recent research from the UC Irvine Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders, drinking coffee and wine could help you live longer.

The 90+ Study evaluated more than 1600 people over the age of 90 for their life style habits and other qualities that might have contributed to their longevity. Participants were visited every six months, when they were given various tests. Researchers also collected information about the participants’ diets, lifestyles, and medical histories, among other things.

The results showed that those who drank moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee every day were likely to live longer than those who didn’t. Those who consumed about two glasses daily of beer or wine were 18 percent more likely to live longer, while coffee drinkers were 10 percent more likely to outlive their peers.

While that would be great news, the research may not be a definitive as it seems. Dietitian Jennnifer Markowtiz told The Daily Meal. “I would be curious to see if the coffee and alcohol drinkers shared other important habits or lifestyle factors that might also play into longevity. In other words, it might not be the wine and coffee that’s helping people live longer. That being said, the two substances do have some considerable health benefits.”

Wine and coffee are packed with antioxidants (抗氧化剂) which are known to protect our bodies from damage caused by free radicals, explained registered dietitian Keri Gans to The Daily Meal. “Research on antioxidants has shown several health benefits, including the possibility they may lower the risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.”
