Shanghai Xintiandi Style Mall is filled with a festive mood, featuring large-scale equipment, knit works and various activities, under the theme "kiss".

"Kissing is seldom taken as the theme of artworks because in oriental (东方的) culture, people restrain themselves from expressing their emotions," says Jiang Shan, who is in charge of the exhibition.

"Through the exhibition, we hope to encourage people to be confident and brave in expressing their love."

Inside the mall, which covers a large area from Zizhong Lu (Road) to Fuxingnan Lu (Road), dozens of colorful decorations, including balloons, lollipops and lip-shaped decorations are hung on the walls and from the ceiling.

Among the decorations, a bright-colored wool artwork attracts most eyeballs and brings about a feeling of warmth.

The designer, Gu Yeli, says the art piece, Kiss Forest, was inspired by US artist Andy Warhol's 1963 experimental film Kiss, which featured various couples kissing for three and a half minutes each. Gu also organizes a small workshop to teach knitting (编织) to children.

Artist Wang Xuejun sets up a stainless-steel mirror at the mall's gate leading to Zizhong Lu. Visitors,

including men, are invited to put on lipstick and kiss the mirror, thus kissing themselves.

The Beast Floral Shop, a flower shop in Shanghai, contributes two walls of flowers that are made into the shape of a book, named Kiss Book. Artifacts (手工艺品) of bees and butterflies are fixed among the blossoms, kissing the flowers. The work represents love and harmony in nature.

Architect Ma Ke creates a Kiss Bridge with transparent (透明的) acrylic boards and ceramic(陶瓷的)fishbowls. Bridges are often spots for dating lovers in traditional Chinese folk stories and the goldfish in the bowls are witnesses of the lovers' kisses.

In the south plaza, an18-meter-high interactive tree-shaped light equipment encourages people to kiss. Each kiss turns a certain light on, reminding audiences of their sweet childhood memories of kisses.

At the side of the tree is a counter, in which each kiss is counted and represents a donation to charity organizations.

Marc Briol started his career at the age of 17 as an apprentice (学徒) at a hotel in Germany, but his experience in the kitchen started at 12, when he had to cook his own meals after school. The young chef with Belle-Vue, the European restaurant at the Grand Hyatt Shenzhen, believes a chef has to be honest and true to his food.

"If you look at the plate, it says exactly what I have done. You cannot cheat. If you try to take a shortcut, you will affect the taste," he says. "It is also what I appreciate in my job ---- direct communication with my customers."

At just 23, Briol was appointed chef of Belle-Vue in September, when his enthusiasm and inspiration won recognition.

"I am so pleased to welcome Marc to lead the culinary (烹饪) team at Belle-Vue. His creativity and passion will bring new inspiration to the restaurant, and create exciting dining experiences that are approachable and fun," says Martin Riehl, executive chef of the hotel.

Briol creates and combines classic dishes with his own understanding and his signature dishes are featured in the Best of Belle-Vue selection. Most of the dishes are presented in two colors ---- green and

red.

"It is a nice contrast with the white plate at the moment. And it reminds me of something happy and merry."

The colors are updated according to season, and also on request from regular customers.

Although Briol has only been in Shenzhen about three months, he has fallen in love with Cantonese food.

"I love dim sum ---- all the steamed vegetables, chicken soup and black tea."

One interesting thing about Shenzhen is how people treat food, he says. "If you go to the local market, you will see things such as snakes, which would belong to the zoo back in my country."

He says that in China, everything has a reason. People respect food, which is not always done in Europe.

"In China, if you eat something, it is because it is healthy for your body."

As for the cooking, he says, it is not easy to get raw materials for a European restaurant in Shenzhen.

"It took me about a month to get the fish I want for my cooking. We had to call Shanghai or Hong Kong to ship the food here," he says. "When I worked in London, the process was much easier."

He gets much of his inspiration from food blogs and friends.

"About 80 percent of my friends come from restaurants, and they are bakers, chefs. We will meet and talk to get new ideas for food." Other sources of inspiration are traveling and cookbooks.

During his day off, he will also try to explore new restaurants in Shenzhen.

"Food is all my life. You have to pay lots of effort to get it done, to improve yourself."

50. Marc Briol has ever worked in _________ according to the article.

A. France, Germany and China

B. Germany, England and China

C. France, China and England

D. Germany, England and France

51. Which sentence can best reflect that Marc Briol loves his career?

B. ―It’s also what I appreciate in my job ---- direct communication with my customers.‖

C. ―It’s a nice contrast with white plate at the moment.‖

D. ―Food is all my life.‖

52. Why is Martin Riehl pleased to have Marc Briol lead the culinary team at Belle-Vue?

A. Because he appreciates Marc’s enthusiasm and creativity.

B. Because Marc has much experience in cooking.

C. Because Marc is honest to his food.

53. Marc Briol gets much of his inspiration from many sources EXCEPT ________.

China faces $176bn bill to clean up air pollution

Cleaning up China’s air pollution will cost 1.75 trillion yuan ($176b) between 2013 and 2017, a high-ranking environmental official has estimated.

Wang Jinnan, deputy head of the Chinese Academy for Environmental Planning, said that the investment ---- part of an anti-pollution "action plan" announced by China's cabinet in September ---- ―would drive up GDP by nearly two trillion yuan ($202b) and create over two million jobs,‖ China’s official newswire Xinhua reported.

The total cost will be higher than the 2012 GDP of most countries, including Finland, Israel and

Portugal.

―36.7 percent of the investment, or 640 billion yuan ($64.5b) should go on cleaning up industry, followed by 490 billion yuan (28.2 percent) on cleaner energy sources. Cleaning up motor vehicles will absorb 210 billion yuan,‖ Xinhua reported, citing (引用) Wang.

In 2013, broad areas of China recorded their highest air pollution levels in 52 years, causing widespread anger over the massive environmental disaster shaped by decades of unchecked economic growth.

While Beijing has long been known for its pea-soup air, a number of traditionally clearer cities, including Shanghai and Harbin, have registered pollution levels high enough for local authorities to ground flights, close schools and pull cars from the roads.

On Friday, Shanghai’s concentration of airborne PM 2.5 –particulate matter small enough to stay deep within the lungs –rose to 214 micrograms per cubic meter, three times China’s national limi t. The official Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center warned children and the elderly to stay indoors.

In its five-year action plan, China's State Council promised to reduce the level of airborne particulate matter by at least 10% in major cities by 2017.

Yet many smog-related government measures, such as controlling street-side barbecues, have drawn criticism for polishing over the problem. In October, one Beijing official blamed the smog on ―the traditional way of cooking Chinese dishes.‖

In response, many Chinese people have taken measures into their own hands. Face masks have become a fashion statement; air purifier sales have rapidly increased. An elementary school in north China’s Shijiazhuang, one of the country’s most polluted cities, has begun teaching its students a smog-defying aerobics (健美操) routine involving acupuncture points associated with respiratory(呼吸)health. Last week, a hospital in the southwestern Chinese city Chengdu ope ned a ―smog clinic‖ to treat air pollution-related diseases such as coughs and asthma; it has been treating roughly a dozen patients a day. "We should not fear smog. It's preventable and curable," says a poster hung by its entrance.

54. What is the major cause of the heavy smog in China according to the article?

A. The investment in an anti-pollution "action plan" is not enough.

B. The economic development has not been carefully checked in the past years.

C. Environmental Planning has not been carried out for decades of years.

D. The traditional way of cooking Chinese dishes has produced too much smoke.

55. To avoid the harm on their health, people suffering from the smog in China are doing the following EXCEPT _______.

A. wearing face masks and use air purifiers

B. warning children and the elderly not to go outdoors

C. criticizing many smog-related government officials

D. opening ―smog clinics‖ to treat air pollution-related diseases

56. After reading the article, most readers may feel ___________.

A. Angry but hopeless

B. Tired and indifferent (漠不关心)

C. Concerned but positive

D. Depressed and annoyed

Hi, everybody. Over the past couple months, most of the political headlines you’ve read have probably been about the government shutdown and the launch of the Affordable Care Act(平价医疗法案). And I know that many of you have rightly never been more frustrated with Washington.

But if you look beyond those headlines, there are some good things happening in our economy. And that’s been my top priority(优先考虑)since the day I walked into the Oval Office.

After decades in which the middle class was working harder and harder just to keep up, and a punishing recession(衰退)that made it worse, we made the tough choices required not just to recover from crisis, but to rebuild on a new foundation for stronger, more durable economic growth.

Five years later, we have fought our way back. Our businesses have created 7.8 million new jobs in the past 44 months. Another 200,000 Americans went back to work last month.

The American auto industry has come back with more than 350,000 new jobs –-- jobs putting out and selling the high-tech, fuel-efficient cars the world wants to buy. And they’re leading the charge in a business that has added jobs for the first time since the 1990s –-- a big reason why our businesses sell more goods and services ―Made in America‖ than ever before.

We decided to stop our addiction to foreign oil. And today, we produce more renewable energy than ever, more natural gas than anybody, and for the first time in nearly 20 years, America now produces more oil than we buy from other countries.

We decided to fix a broken health care system. And even though the task has been rough, so far, about 500,000 Americans gain health coverage starting January 1st. And by the way, health care costs are growing at the slowest rate in 50 years.

And one more thing: since I took office, we’ve cut our deficits(赤字) by more than half. And that makes it easier to invest in the things that create jobs –-- education, research, and so on.

Imagine how much farther along we could be if both parties were working together. Think about what we could do if the few didn’t hold the economy hostage (人质) every few months, or waste time on dozens of votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act rather than try to help us fix it.

In the weeks ahead, I’ll keep talking about my plan to build a better bargain for the middle class. Good jobs. A good education. A chance to buy a home, save, and retire. And yes, the financial security of affordable health care. And I’ll look for any willing partners who want to help.

Because of your hard work and tough sacrifices over the past five years, we’re pointed in the right direction. But we’ve got more work to do to keep movi ng that way. And as long as I’m President, I’ll keep doing everything I can to create jobs, grow the economy, and make sure that everyone who works hard has

a chance to get ahead. Thanks, and have a great weekend.

57. Which of the following is not the reas on for people’s frustration with the government?

A. The government shutdown

B. Unemployment rate

C. The addiction to foreign oil

D. Cancelling the Affordable Care Act

58. Why does the president mention more goods and services ―Made in America‖?

A. To show that American goods and services are very popular.

B. To indicate that American people should be dependent on themselves.

C. To show that the employment rate has been increased.

D. To show that American auto industry enjoys high technology.

59. What’s the meaning of the underlined word ―repeal‖?

A. put an end to

B. try hard to fix

C. make stronger

D. get accustomed to

60. According to the speech, which of the following can be implied?

A. American people have every reason to feel frustrated with the government.

B. Health care costs are growing at the slowest rate in 50 years.

C. The president feels sorry that the economy is not moving in the right direction.

D. Some government officials don’t agree with the president on the medical care system.

Laughter makes you feel good. And the good feeling that you get when you laugh remains with you even after the laughter disappears. Humor helps you keep a positive, optimistic outlook through difficult situations, disappointments, and loss.

More than just a pause from sadness and pain, laughter gives you the courage and strength to find new sources of meaning and hope. Even in the most difficult of times, a laugh –-- or even simply a smile–can go a long way toward making you feel better. And laughter really is contagious (有传染的)—just hearing laughter primes your brain and readies you to smile and join in the fun.

Laughter strengthens our relationships by bringing positive feelings and building emotional connections. When we laugh with one another, a positive bond is created. This bond acts strongly against stress, disagreements, and disappointment.

Shared laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships fresh and exciting. All emotional sharing builds strong and lasting relationship bonds. Laughter unites people during difficult times.

Having more humor and play into your daily interactions can improve the quality of your love relationships— as well as your connections with co-workers, family members, and friends.

Laughter is your birthright, a natural part of life that is inborn. Little babies begin smiling during the first weeks of life and laugh out loud within months of being born. Even if you did not grow up in a family where laughter was a common sound, you can learn to laugh at any stage of life.

One essential characteristic that helps us laugh is not taking ourselves too seriously. We’ve all known someone who takes everything with deathly seriousness and never laughs at anything. No fun there!

The ability to laugh, play, and have fun with others not only makes life more enjoyable but also helps you solve problems, connect with others, and be more creative. People who include humor and play into their daily lives find that it renews them and all of their relationships.

Life brings challenges that can either get the best of you or become playthings for your imagination. When you ―become the problem‖ and take yoursel f too seriously, it can be hard to think outside the box and find new solutions. But when you play with the problem, you can often transform it into an opportunity for creative learning.

The Internet provides people with a lot of information. Some people say that the information is valuable while others think access to much information creates problems. Recently, our class had a debate about this topic. The result is as follows.

60% of the students think that the advantages overweigh the disadvantages for a couple of reasons. First, more information means more communication, which is actually an important part of a successful social life. Besides, more information can guarantee more approaches to problems in our daily life.

However, 40% of the students hold a different opinion. They argue that too much information on the Internet will weaken people’s creativity, making them become passive more and more passive in learning. Moreover, people will spend much more time searching for information, most of which might be useless at all for them.

From my point of view, information on the Internet helps create a better life. More sources of information bring about more opportunities for us to educate ourselves, and also the Internet provides us with more solutions to choose from when we face problems. (154 words)
