Superman, Spider-Man, Batman and Iron Man …There is no shortage of superheroes. You find them in comic books, on the TV and the big screen.

In a survey of fans by the sci-fi and fantasy website, https://www.sodocs.net/doc/4a5677089.html,, Batman, 70 years old this year, w as voted Britain’s favorite superhero.

Unlike many crime-fighting superheroes Batman has no special powers. He can't fly like Superman or shoot a sticky web like Spider-Man.

Bruce Wayne is born to a wealthy Gotham City business family. However, when his parents are murdered his life changes completely.

Wayne feels anger at their deaths and guilty that he did not prevent them. He travels around the world learning how to fight. Upon returning to Gotham, he creates a disguise to enable him to fight crime without being recognized.

A childhood fear of bats leads him to choose to dress as one. His idea is that through the bat persona, he can prove to himself that he has overcome his childhood fears.

Wayne is the CEO of the company he inherits from his father. He seems to live the lifestyle of a millionaire playboy. But this is a ruse (计策). He works hard at the image to allow himself the freedom he needs to do his work as a crime fighter. “Bruce Wayne, playboy” is the disguise; Batman is the real person.

“Wayne is not a born superhero. Instead, he is a real, complex person,”said Dace Golder, editor of the website. "He is the most realistic of all the superheroes.

I am particularly interested in the emotional process by which a boy becomes a hero. His superhero qualities come from within.”

For centuries, in the countries of South and Southeast Asia, the elephant has been an important part of the culture, economy and religion. And nowhere more so than in Thailand.Unlike its African cousin, the Asian elephant is easily domesticated(驯化). The rare so-called white elephants have actually lent the power of royalty to its rulers, and until the 1920s the national flag was a white elephant on a red background. To t he early Western visitors, the country’s romantic name was “Land of the White Elephant”

Today, however, the story is very different. Out of work and out of land, the Thai elephant struggles for survival in a nation that no longer needs it. The elephant has found itself more or less deserted by previous owners who have moved on to a different economic world and a society in the western part. And while the elephant's problems began many years ago, now it has a very low national advantage.

How does the national symbol turn into ignored animals? It is a story of worse environment and the changing lives of the Thais themselves. According to Richard Lair, Thailand's expert on the Asian elephant and author of the report Gone Astray, at the turn of the last century, there may well have been as many as 100,000 national elephants in the country.

In the north of Thailand alone, it was estimated that more than 20,000 elephants were employed in transport, 1,000 of them alone on the road between the cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Saen.

This was at a time when 90 percent of Thailand was still forest--a habitat that not only supported the animals but also made them necessary to carry goods and people. Nothing ploughs through thick forest better than lots of sure-footed elephants.

By 1950 the elephant population had dropped, but still to the number of 13, 397. However, today there-are probably no more than 3,800, with another l,350 wandering free in the national parks. But now, Thailand's forest covers only 20 percent of the land. This deforestation(采伐森林) is the central point of the elephant's difficult situation, for it has effectively put the animals out of work.

This century, as the road network grew, the elephant's role as a beast of Burden decreased.

61.What can we know about African elephants from the passage?

A.It is hard to domesticate them.

B. It is easy to domesticate them.

C.They are living a better life than Asian elephants.

D.Their fate is quite similar to that of Asian elephants.

B.white elephant is rarely seen and thus very special

C.white elephant has helped kings to gain the ruling authority

D.white elephant was a national symbol until the 1920s

63.Why is the Thai elephant “out of work”, according to the author?

A.Because there are too many elephants but too few jobs.

B.Because the elephants are no longer useful to their owners.

C.Because the government pays little attention to the problem.

D.Because the elephants can't do labor work any longer.

64.Which of the following statements is TRUE about the elephant population at various times?

A.There were 100,000 domesticated elephants at the turn of the last century.B.20,000 elephants were employed in transport in Thailand at the turn of the century.

To some, it's a dream job---eating delicious meals for free and then writing about them. But for some food critics, their eyes aren't the only thing that gets wide with yet another feast.

Karen Fernau, a food writer for The Arisona Republic, said when she first started her job –she began to gain weight.“I always looked forward to lunch before this job, then all of a sudden lunch was all day every day." she says.Nine years later, keeping her weight steady and her health intact (完好无损的)is a daily battle. If she knows she will be going to a tasting at a bakery or eating a four-course meal, she usually eats fruits or salads throughout the day.Now she is always keeping track of what's in the food she eats and she says most people don't even look at or consider it.At one tasting task alone, she says, upward of l,000 calories is often added to her day. That's about half of the recommended total calories per day for the average adult.

But even though she's thought of a special eating method, Fernau says sticking to it is a daily battle. And food editors, writers and critics across the country couldn't agree more.“When I'm at home or not eating for work, it's healthy food

to the extreme," says Phil Vettel, who's been a restaurant critic for the Chicago Tribune for 19 years.

Vettel, who eats dinner at four restaurants each week, says unlike most professions, he has no right to choose."If I'm going out to eat, I can't choose the healthiest thing on the menu, I have to eat when they're bringing me." While Vettel exercises when he can, Joe Yonan, a food editor at The Washington Post, has strengthened his exercise habits since he started the job two years ago.Yonan says he realized early on that he was gaining weight and immediately hired a personal trainer to meet with three times a week, on top of his body training three to five times a week.

Still, it's a struggle that many Americans might envy. After all, it's one thing to get your calories from lobster tails or a delicate chocolate cookie and quite another to get them from sodas and fast-food burgers.

66.What does the underlined sentence mean in Para l?

A.The food critics are always impressed by the delicious food in the restaurant.B.The food critics are shocked to learn they have to have one more feast.C.The food critics eat delicious food, which also tends to result in gaining weight.

D.There is a wide variety of choices for the food critics to choose from.67.What can we learn about the job of being a food critic?

A.Once they become food critics, they tend to stay in the job.

B.They only work for local magazines and newspapers.

C. They enjoy free and delicious dishes and make comments on them.

D.Their excellent sense of taste makes them qualified for the job.68.What is mentioned to be a method that food writers use to keep fit?

A.Not eating anything except for the free meals.

B.Writing down everything they put into their mouth.

C.Choosing only the healthy food on the menu.

D.Hiring a personal trainer for special exercise instructions.

69.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.No matter whether the food is expensive or not, the gaining of calories is the same.

B.Americans envy those food critics since they enjoy delicate and tasty food.C.The calories that lobster tails and chocolate cookies contain are less harmful.

D.Everybody should take the calories in their food carefully.

70.What's the main idea of the passage?

A.A job offering free meals may not be as desirable as it sounds to be.B.Dishes in the restaurant usually contain too many calories.

C.Food writers work hard to maintain their health and weight.

D.Eating fruits and vegetables every day is the best way to lose weight.

D

Malaria, the world's most widespread parasitic(寄生虫引起的) disease, kills as many as three million people every year—almost all of whom are under five, very

poor, and African. In most years, more than five hundred million cases of illness result from the disease, although exact numbers are difficult to assess because many people don't (or can't) seek care. It is not unusual for a family earning less than two hundred dollars a year to spend a quarter of its income on malaria treatment, and what they often get no longer works. In countries like Tanzania, Mozambique, and the Gambia, no family, village, hospital, or workplace can remain unaffected for long.

Malaria starts suddenly, with violent chills, which are soon followed by an intense fever and, often, headaches. As the parasites multiply, they take over the entire body. Malaria parasites live by eating the red blood cells they infect. They can also attach themselves to blood vessels in the brain. If it doesn't kill you, malaria can happen again and again for years. The disease passed on to humans by female mosquitoes infected with one of four species of parasite. Together, the mosquito and the parasite are the most deadly couple in the history of the earth—and one of the most successful. Malaria has five thousand genes, and its ability to change rapidly to defend itself and resist new drugs has made it nearly impossible to control. Studies show that mosquitoes are passing on the virus more frequently, and there are more outbreaks in cities with large populations. Some of the disease's spread is due to global warming.

For decades, the first-choice treatment for malaria parasites in Africa has been chloroquine, a chemical which is very cheap and easy to make. Unfortunately, in most parts of the world, malaria parasites have become resistant to it. Successful alternatives that help prevent resistance are already available, but they have been in short supply and are very expensive. If these drugs should fail, nobody knows what would come next.

71. According to paragraph 1, many people don't seek care because___.

A. it is unusual to seek care

B. they are too poor

C. they can remain unaffected for long

D. there are too many people suffering from the disease

72. People suffering from malaria___.

A. have to kill female mosquitoes

B. have ability to defend parasites

C. have sudden fever, followed by chills.

D. have their red blood cells infected

73. Which of the following may be the reason for the wide spread of the disease?

A. Its resistance to global warming.

B. Its ability to defend itself and resist new drugs.

C. Its outbreaks in cities with large populations.

D. Its ability to pass on the virus frequently.

74. It can be inferred from the passage that___.

A. the alternative treatment is not easily available to most people

B. no drugs have been found to treat the disease.

C. malaria has developed its ability to resist parasites

D. nobody knows what will be the drug to treat the disease

75. Which of the following questions has NOT been discussed in the passage?

A. How can we know one is suffering from malaria?

B. How many people are killed by malaria each year?

C. What has been done to keep people unaffected for long?

D. Why are there so many people suffering from malaria?

They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A) People have become used to crimes now. B) With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C) People now like to read books with pictures. D) The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that _______. A) children should keep away from TV B) TV programs should be improved C) children's books should have pictures D) TV has a deep influence on the young Passage Two Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and " writing". In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer". The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer killed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in
