(1) A long time ago a cruel man named Gessler became the ruler of the Swiss. He had his own hat hung on a tall pole in the public square. Then he gave orders that every man who passed by the square should bow to his hat.
There was one man who would not do this .that man was William Tell, who was a huntsman and could shoot well with a bow and arrow. Because of that Tell was thrown into prison. A little boy of Tell’s was also put into prison, for, he would not bow to Gessler’s hat, either.
One day Gessler thought of a cruel plan. “ I hear that you can shoot well with a bow and arrow. Tomorrow, your son shall stand at one side and shoot the apple with an arrow. If you will not do it, your son shall be killed before your eyes. And if you do not hit it, both you and your boy shall die. If you do hit it ,both you shall go free.”
The next day the little boy was made to stand at one side of the public square with a small apple on his head. William Tell, with his bow and arrow, stood a long way at the other side of the square .And the arrow was crooked (弯曲的).
Tell raised the bow . Then, twang, and the arrow went flying through the air. A great shout could be heard from the people around. What did it mean? Tell woud not look for he was afraid that he might have shot his child. Suddenly he felt a little arm around his neck. “Father, I am safe. The arrow went right through the center of the apple.”
“ You may go free now,” said Gessler. Just then an arrow dropped from under Tell’s coat. Gessler saw it . He cried “What were you going to do with that arrow?”
“Shoot you with it if I had harmed my child,” said Tell.

The sea is very deep in some places. There is one spot, near Japan, where the sea is nearly 11 kilometers deep. The highest mountain in the world is about 9 kilometers high. If that mountain were put into the sea at that place, there would be 2 kilometers of water above it.
If you have swum in the sea, you know that it is salty. You can taste the salt. Rivers, which flow into the sea, carry salt from the land into the sea. Some parts of the sea are less salty than other parts. There is one sea, called the Dead Sea. Because it is very salty, swimmers cannot sink! Fish cannot live in the Dead Sea.
In most parts of the sea, there are plenty of fishes and plants,. Some live near the top of sea.
Others live deep down. There are also millions of tiny living things that float in the sea. These floating things are very small. It is hard to see them. Many fish live by eating these.
The sea can be very cold. Divers, who dive deep down in the sea , you know this. On the top the water may be warm. When the diver goes downwards, the sea become colder and colder.
Another thing happens. When the diver goes deeper, the water above presses down on him. It squeezes (压迫)him. Then the diver has to wear clothes made of metal.
