I began working in journalism(新闻工作) when I was eight. It was my mother’s

idea. She wanted me to “make something” of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition.

With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible, making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was supper time, I walked back home.

“How many did you sell, my son?” my mother asked.

“None.”

“Where did you go?”

“The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.”

“What did you do?”

“Stood on the corner waiting somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”

“You just stood there?”

“Didn’t sell a single one.”

“My God, Russell.”

Uncle Allen put in, “Well, I decided to take the post.” I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickel. It was the first nickel I earned.

Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman. I would have to ring door bells, address adults with self-confidence, and persuade them by saying that no one, no matter how poor, could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home.

One day I told my mother I’d changed my mind. I didn’t want to make a success in the magazine business.

“If you think you can change you mind like this,”she replied, “you’ll become a good-for-nothing.” She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said no she would scold me.

My mother and I had fought this battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my father’s plain workman’s life, determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband’s people for true life and love.

I come form a close, loving family. I have three elder brothers. My parents wanted

a daughter, but they had me, a boy, instead.

My parents owned a wood supply business. They were active volunteers(志愿者) in our community . When I was a kid, people used to joke with my dad and said that his volunteer work was his business and his business was his hobby. That rubbed off

on me. For example, I volunteered as a Big Brother in high school, and I continued doing volunteer work in college

Before graduation, my brother Mark asked if I’d like to help him start a software company, so I joined his company and worked there for 27 years. Working for such a long time in the software industry is very unusual. Even when I started working, I continued to volunteer.

I strongly believe that you can learn a lot form the people around you by volunteering. That is why, after work, I volunteer to stay with old people who live alone. That’s how I met old Malcolm, who’s physically healthy. We talk like old friends. He is also interested in my work. He often says,” You can lose touch with real life being the CEO of a big software company very quickly. ”

I have learned a lot form volunteering. Malcolm teaches me to be a kind person, to look at the good side of life, and many other things. Most people volunteer for a year, but we have been together for five years, and there is no end in sight. I have also found that volunteer work not only influences those who need help, but also influences the people around me.

53. The underline phrase “rub off on” means “_______”.

A. interest

B. hurt

C. cheat

D. influence

54. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

Just as he expected, a little boy soon appeared by the store owner's sign. "How much are you going to sell the puppies for?" he asked. The store own er replied, "$10 for each." The little boy reached in his pocket and pulled out some change. "I have $2.50" he said. "May I please look at them?" The store owner smiled and whistled, taking out five dogs. One puppy was left behind, immediately the little boy singled it out and said, "What's wrong with that little dog?" The store owner explained that the little puppy was disabled. It would always be lame. The little boy became excited. "That is the little puppy that I want to buy." The store owner said "No, you don't want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I'll just give him to you.” The little boy got quite upset, looked into the store owner's eyes, pointing his finger, and said, "I don't want you to give him to me. That dog is worth eveny bit as much as all the other dogs and I'll pay full price. In fact, I'll give you $2.50 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for." The store owner countered, "You really don't want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies.' On hearing this, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the store owner and softly replied, "Well, I don't run so well myself and the little puppy will need someone who understands!” 21. Why does the shop owner stick the sign? A. To advertise all his goods. B. To attract little children.
