HTRI Negotiates Exclusive Worldwide Distribution Rights to Useful New Program

Heat T ransfer Research, Inc. has negotiated the exclusive worldwide distribution rights to Enhanced Heat T ransfer (EHT), written by John R. Thome. EHT , a software package for calculating the thermal and hydraulic

performance of a variety of enhanced-surface tubes and inserts, will be available to all HTRI members and participating affiliates at a discounted rate. Companies that are not HTRI members also may license EHT .This Microsoft Windows-based program has been

designed to provide quick and reliable calculations to aid in the design and rating of high-performance shell-and-tube, double-pipe, and hairpin heat exchangers.EHT is suitable for use with standard heat exchangers,and also with refrigeration and HVAC systems utilizing most common refrigerants including R11, R12, R22,R123, R134a, R142b, R152a, and mixtures. The meth-ods used for these calculations, as with all HTRI soft-ware, are based on research data.

The tube and insert types available for modeling include ?plain tubes

?corrugated/fluted tubes ?ribbed tubes

?coiled wire mesh inserts ?helically coiled wire inserts ?twisted tape inserts ?aluminum star inserts ?porous metallic coatings ?

bent saw-tooth fin tubes

and many others. Modeling methods cover single-phase intube flows, condensation of pure vapors, and boiling of pure fluids and mixtures.

HTRI-Net One Year Old

HTRI-Net, the online information resource for HTRI customers and

industry professionals, marked its first anniversary in March. As with the rest of the internet, use of the HTRI web site continues to increase worldwide.One year ago, the web site averaged visits from 10 individual users per week.Today, that number is consistently over 150 users per week.

We continue to increase our use of this distribution medium, primarily to inform HTRI customers and potential customers of HTRI news, develop-ments, and events. Among the most accessed areas on the site are newsletter articles, and HTRI software information.

HTRI Celebrates 35th Anniversary

In July, HTRI will celebrate its 35th year of opera-tions. The event, to be held in Pasadena, California,promises to be a chance to reflect on HTRI’s global achievements over the last three-and-a-half decades—longer than any other organization of its kind. It will also provide an opportunity to look to the future as we continue to lead the industry in quality research and provide the most accurate, user-friendly, affordable heat transfer research and software products available anywhere in the world.

The anniversary celebration will be held during the HTRI 1997 Annual Meeting of Stockholders, July 28-August 1, 1997 at the Ritz-Carlton ?

ACHEMA/Chem Show 97

HTRI will participate in the ACHEMA 97 trade show in Frankfurt, Germany, June 9-14, 1997. The show is held in conjunction with the 25th Exhibition-Congress International Meeting on Chemical Engineering, Envi-ronmental Protection, and Biotechnology. Over 3,000exhibitors representing 46 countries are expected to participate.

HTRI will conduct a one-day IST workshop on Mon-day, June 16, 1997, in Ulm, Germany. HTRI exhibited with Argonne National Laboratory at the 2nd Energy Efficiency Symposium in Arlington, VA on February 24-26, 1997. This symposium and exhibit were sponsored by the Office of Industrial T echnology (OIT) of the U.S. Department of Energy. HTRI and ANL participated jointly to promote the need for fouling research and highlight how this research can provide significant benefits to the refining and petro-chemical industry.

Software Tips Refinery Fouling Mitigation Research

ANSI.SYS?

T o use certain HTRI software in interactive mode, you must be sure that the ANSI driver that comes with DOS and Windows is loaded (See “HTRI Software requiring the ANSI.SYS driver” at right ). While this driver is included in all Microsoft operating systems, it is not installed by default. The easiest way to tell if the driver is properly installed is by starting an HTRI program; if the main menu exhibits strange behavior such as quickly scrolling,illegible text or garbage characters, you probably need to modify your operating system’s startup configuration file.The examples below show how to load the driver for DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and Windows NT .For more specific information, see the documentation that came with the PC or contact your PC systems manager.Windows 3.1x/DOS

Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) has contracted with HTRI to assist in developing an industry-supported five-year research plan to improve refinery efficiency by decreasing downtime and excess heat exchanger surface requirements due to fouling.

ANL and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have stated that fouling is the leading reason for inefficiency in the U.S. refining and petrochemical industry. It is estimated that the amount of energy wasted due to

fouling is greater than 0.2 quads per year and the associ-ated annual cost is greater than two (2) billion dollars.To mitigate these losses, ANL is proposing to develop a five-year research program in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute (API) and HTRI. The tasks assigned to HTRI are the following:

?identify and prioritize technical issues

?develop objectives, technical approach, and mile-stones for a five-year fouling mitigation program ?propose practical means to implement findings in refinery operation and future refinery design

?estimate the probable impact on refinery down time and new plant investment As a result of this contract, HTRI will prepare a five-year proposed research plan for submission to the Depart-ment of Energy.

1997 Winter Meeting

HTRI held its 1997 Winter Meeting at the Ritz-Carlton ? Houston, February 17-21,1997 in Houston, Texas, USA. Over 130 members attended the meeting including representatives from Canada, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Taiwan, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

During opening remarks on T uesday, HTRI President and Chief Executive Officer Claudette D. Beyer introduced Dr. Blazo Ljubicic, Director of Research, who was well received by the membership. Keynote speaker Dr. John C. Chen presented his AIChE Heat T ransfer and Energy Conversion Division Award lecture during lunch on Wednesday.

Attendees heard reports and updates from HTRI staff during the subcommittee

meetings. Our highly popular IST Workshop (see related story, page 3) was presented three times, with each session filled to capacity. Additional workshops are planned for the 1997 Annual Meeting of Stockholders.

Condensation of Multicomponent Hydrocarbon Mixture Tested on VICU

Condensation of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures with and without noncondensable gases has many applications in the chemical and petrochemical indus-tries. To study this process, HTRI conducted more than 200 data runs in 1995, condensing binary and ternary hydrocarbon mixtures on the Vertical Intube Condensa-tion Unit (VICU). Based on these data, we have im-proved HTRI heat transfer coefficient correlations.At the request of several HTRI members and the Con-densing Subcommittee, HTRI recently began testing a wide boiling range multicomponent mixture on the VICU to evaluate and improve current exchanger design methods. Phillips Petroleum Company donated the test fluids for a mixture with more than 80 components and a wide boiling range. These components can be classified in seven groups, based on their molecular weight:pentane (C 5), hexane (C 6), heptane (C 7), octane (C 8),nonane (C 9), decane (C 10), and undecane (C 11).Test pressure during data collection varied from vacuum (2.0 psia, 13.8 kPa) to 45 psia (310 kPa), and the con-densing flow regime from shear-controlled to gravity-controlled flow. Tests were also conducted with nitrogen and helium as noncondensable gases. These data will be very useful in evaluating and improving HTRI correla-tions for heat transfer and pressure drop in this type of application.

基于I基于IPQAM的互动点播 作者:张峰来源:广播电视信息 【摘要】:本文先简述了几种近年来流行的广电和电信运营商采用的视频点播技术,然后详细介绍了广电运营商基于HFC网络的以IPQAM为核心设备的MEPG-2视频点播技术的实现方式,指出此点播方式是有线运营商值得大力发展与应用的视频点播技术。 【关键词】:VOD IPQA MuMG9820 1开展视频点播业务的必要性和意义 (1)随着用户对信息需求的逐步增长,已不满足单向的被动的接受信息,交互成为视频领域的发展方向。 (2)随着卫星直播电视,网络电视等新的视频传输技术的出现,传统有线电视的垄断优势不在,各网络运营商在视频传输领域的的竞争加剧。 因此网络运营商尤其是广电运营商需要积极开发VOD技术与应用,由此来增强用户的忠诚度,减少用户流失以及提高用户ARPU值(单用户平均价值)。 美国有线运营商Comcast对半年之内用户流失的报告显示,对于开通视频点播业务的用户,用户保持度为96%,而对于未开通视频点播业务的用户,保持度仅为82%。国内杭州等地开展视频点播业务的城市,有线用户的ARPU值从原来的14元每月提高到45元,对运营商来说是属于“杀手级应用”(killerapplication)。 2几种视频点播技术介绍 国内有线运营商因网络改造进度,与其他电信运营商的合作关系等情况不一,一般都采用NVOD(准视频点播),BVOD(广播式视频点播),以太网VOD和IPQAMVOD等几种方式,它们之间的比较见表1。

(1)NVOD是将一部片子切成几个片段在一个模拟通道的几个逻辑通道中按一定的时间间隔进行循环播放,这样就可以使用户在点播节目时在响应时间内看到NVOD的节目播出。举例一部片子的时长为80分钟,素材的码率为4.5Mbps/s,传输带宽使用一个模拟通道进行传输。计算出在38M的数字带宽中可以划分4.5M的逻辑频道为8个 (4.5*8=36M),每个频道播出的间隔通过计算为10分钟,也就是说当第一个频道开始播出后10分钟第二个频道开始播放节目,10分钟后第三个频道开始播放节目,以此类推在第8个频道播出10分钟后第一个频道正好播完80分钟的节目,这样使用户在任意时间内点播时等待的时间都是在0-10分钟。 NVOD的优点是在单向的网络中即可实现,系统构架简单,设备投入少,缺点是比较浪费带宽,用户可以选择点播的内容数量也不多。 (2)BVOD技术是将一部片子按照特定的算法切分成很小的分组,分组的最小单位为一个Ts流的包长(188字节),STB将接收到的分组在硬盘中做缓存,将分组按算法拼装成片子,这样边传输边缓存,边拼装边播放,可以将用户的等待时间缩短到很小。 BVOD的优点是在单向网络中即可实现,相比NVOD,等待时间小,用户可以选择的片子也多,缺点是要增加STB的成本,非标技术,与CAS的集成也是一个比较突出的技术问题。 (3)NVOD和BVOD都是在没有上行通道的单向网络中实现,是用户与STB之间本地的交互,而真正的点播TVOD是用户与远端服务器之间的交互,目前主要有基于以太网的
