Literary criticism is an attempt to evaluate and understand the

creative writing, the literature of an author. Literature includes plays,

essays, novels, poetry, and short stories. Literary criticism is a

description, analysis, evaluation, or interpretation of a particular

literary work or an author's writings as a whole. Literary criticism is

usually expressed in the form of a critical essay. In-depth book

reviews are also sometimes viewed as literary criticism.

3)Why should we make discourse analysis? (10%)

Discourse analysis (DA), or discourse studies, is a general term for a number of approaches to analyzing written, spoken, signed language use or any significant semiotic event.

The objects of discourse analysis —discourse, writing, conversation, communicative event, etc.—are variously defined in terms of coherent sequences of sentences, propositions, speech acts or turns-at-talk. Contrary to much of traditional linguistics, discourse analysts not only study language use 'beyond the sentence boundary', but also prefer to analyze 'naturally occurring' language use, and not invented examples. This is known as corpus linguistics; text linguistics is related. The essential difference between discourse analysis and text linguistics is that it aims at revealing socio-psychological characteristics of a person/persons rather than text structure.[1]

Discourse analysis has been taken up in a variety of social science disciplines, including linguistics, sociology, anthropology, social work, cognitive psychology, social psychology, international relations, human geography, communication studies and translation studies, each of which is subject to its own assumptions, dimensions of analysis, and methodologies. My friend asked the question when I told him that I didn’t want to be considered for an administr ative position. He was puzzled that I didn’t want what was obviously a “step up” toward what all Americans are taught to want when they grow up: money and power. Certainly I don’t teach because teaching is easy for me. Teaching is the most difficult of the various ways I have attempted to earn my living: mechanic, carpenter, writer. For me, teaching is a red-eye, sweaty-palm, sinking-stomach profession. Red-eye, because I never feel ready to teach no matter how late I stay up preparing. Sweaty-palm, because I’m always nervous before I enter the classroom, sure that I will be found out for the fool that I am. Sinking-stomach, because I leave the classroom an hour later convinced that I was even more boring than usual. Nor do I teach because I think I know answers, or because I have knowledge I feel compelled to share. Sometimes I am amazed that my students actually take notes on what I say in class! Why, then, do I teach? I teach because I like the pace of the academic calendar. June, July, and August offer an opportunity for reflection, research, and writing. I teach because teaching is a profession built on change. When the material is the same, I change—and, more important, my students change. I teach because I like the freedom to make my own mistakes, to learn my own lessons, to stimulate myself and my students. As a teacher, I’m my own boss. If I want my freshmen to learn to write by creating their own textbook, who is to say I can’t? Such courses may be huge failures, but we can all learn from failures. I teach because I like to ask questions that students must struggle to answer. The world is full of right answers to bad questions. While teaching, I sometimes find good questions. I teach because I enjoy finding ways of getting myself and my students out of the ivory tower and into the real world. I once taught a course called Self-reliance in a Technological Society. But we also set up a corporation, borrowed money, purchased a run-down house and practiced self-reliance by renovating it. At the end of the semester, we sold the house, repaid our loan, paid our taxes, and distributed the profits among the group. So teaching gives me pace and patience, vigor and variety, and challenge, and the chance to keep on learning.

第一章文体学相关研究内容 文体学分为普通文体学和文学文体学,二者有重叠部分,但在此我们所研究的是普通文体学,文体学研究的是语言风格,对语言,人们的理解有很多种,但不管哪种说法,无可否认,语言都是人类表达思想、互相交流的手段,并且有很多具不同意旨的言语事件;风格是与说话人的语言习惯、时代背景相关的,是人门特有的表达方式,因人而异,对语言起到一定修饰作用并且关系到语言表达的有效性。因此,文体学研究会涉及各种语言变体及相关特征、功用。文体学对提高理解力和鉴赏水平有很大帮助。此外,文体学还与语言学、修辞学及文学评论等相关联。接下来的章节中将具体阐述相关内容。 第二章文体学研究的必要性 学习文体学可以提高我们语言使用的精确性,犹如不能在婚礼上穿牛仔装一样,语言使用要合乎当时、当地的具体环境,这就涉及文体学中的言语事件;学习文体学有利于提高我们对文学作品的理解与鉴赏水平,因为文学创作中,作者不可避免会对作品的语言、风格做选择,在文学评论三部曲(描述、解读、评估)中会涉及相关内容;文体学对满足翻译适应性有很大帮助,翻译很难做到完全对应,但基本原则一致是必须的,如作品基调、作品体裁等一致。以上文体学内容中都有涉及。 第三章语言变体 在不同的社交场合,有不同的约定俗成的语体。根据特定场合的语言习惯及其中特定说话人的语言使用,语言变体可以分为两种:方言变体和语域变体。方言变体与不同的语言使用者相关,分为个人方言、时间方言、地域方言、社会方言和标准方言;语域变体与不同社交场合相关,其构成要素是语场、语式和语旨。两种变体并非独立存在而是有一定的相关性,比如,在同一种族、同一领域或同一社会地位,为了增进了解,说话人可能会选择这一具某种共同特征人群的行内语言。此外,从语言变体中,我们还可以获知说话人的某些相关信息,如职业、国家和说话意旨等。 第四章语言描述 了解了语言变体,本章节探讨各种语言变体的具体表述问题,即具体语言表述。在这个层面上,文体学提供了一种系统的分析方法,使我们对付各种文章轻而易举。文体学上对语言描述的研究分别从语言层次上着手,即从音系、语相上,词汇语法上和语义上着手。各个层次上的具体特征表现共同或分别作用于文章整体,以达到某种表达效果。因此,在对语言描述进行具体分析时,就要着眼于这几个层次上的文体特征,具体步骤:系统浏览文章并记录具有已述特征的语言点;量化语言特征的使用频率;评估文体特征在文中的重要意义;对文章总体进行综合评述,尤其是对逻辑关系和整体思路。另外,我们可以将这种方法应用到对变体种类和语场的分析中。 第五章正式语和非正式语 语言所承载的基本功能是人际交流功能,根据参与者和具体语言环境,语言有正式和非正式的差别。说话人社会地位愈高、具体场合愈正式,语言使用就越严谨、越正式;在日常对话或与关系愈亲密的人对话时,语言使用就越生活化、越轻松。语言使用的正式程度与话语意旨密切相关,由此产生日常习语、法律术语、政治术语等等专门语言,Martin Joos将正式程度变化划分五级:僵化、正式、咨询、随便、亲密。不同语言环境下,语言正式度会不同,说话人会随外部语言环境自行调节。正式用语与非正式用语在词汇、音调、语义上都有所不同,前者用词多是正式书面化,吐词清晰、完整,逻辑性强;后者则相反。根据同现限制原则,我们可以分辨语言使用的正式程度高低。 第六章口语和书面语 根据语言传播媒介,语言分为口语和书面语,二者在很多方面均有不同。与书面语相比,口语一般是说话人与听话人面对面交流,说话人需要听话人关注,并及时得到反馈,所以多

Chapter 2 The Need for Stylistic Study Review ●STYLE是使用语言的一种方式,它属于言语(parole),而不属于语言(langue)。 ●STYLE体现在语言运用的各个层面,体现在语音、书写、词汇、句法结构 乃至语篇类型的选择上。 ●任何类型的语篇都具有特定的文体特征;任何一个语篇也都具有特定的文体 特征。 ●STYLE的涵义颇多,既可指“文体”,“语体”,也可指“风格”或“文风”。广义 的文体学成为普通文体学或语体学,狭义的文体研究称作文学文体学。 ●不论是从事广义的文体研究,还是进行狭义的文体研究,我们都需要借助于 相关学科的理论和知识、尤其是修辞学、语用学、余篇分析和文学批评领域的知识。 What is context? Definition: Context refers to the conditions in which something exists or occurs. Linguistically, this is the part of a discourse surrounding a word or passage that helps make its meaning clear. 语境是人们运用语言进行言语交际的言语环境。言语交际有成效的进行(即说话人恰当地表达话语的意义和听话人准确地理解话语意义)必须依赖言语环境。 Classifications: Classification 1: 1)内部语境(lingual/ linguistic context) Rules concerning the language itself such as grammar 2)外部语境(extra-lingual/non-linguistic context) The speaker?s and the audience?s mood, age, position, occupation, cultural background, etc. Classification 2: 1) 指语篇内部的上下文(co-text; linguistic context) 2) 指言语事件发生时的社会情境特征(socio-situational features)以及交际双方的社会历史文化和风俗习惯,乃至价值观念等。主要分为两类:一种与语言使用者有关;一种与语言使用者对语言的使用有关。 Examples 1: Sam committed theft and was caught red-handed by Mary.
