构词法

一.类别

英语构词法主要有:合成法,转化法,派生法,混成法,截短法和词首字母缩略法。

二.定义与精讲

1.转化法

英语中,有的名词可作动词,有的形容词可作副词或动词,这种把一种词性用作另一种词性而词形不变的方法叫作转化法。

1)动词转化为名词

①很多动词可以转化为名词,大多数情况下,意思没有多大的变化,如:

Let's go out for a walk.我们到外面去散散步吧。

②有时意思有一定变化,如:

He is a man of strong build.他是一个体格健壮的汉子。

③有的与一个动词和不定冠词构成短语,表示一个动作,如:

Let's have a swim.咱们游泳吧。

2)名词转化为动词

①很多表示物件,如

Did you book a seat on the plane? 你订好飞机座位了吗?

②身体部位,如:

Please hand me the book.请把那本书递给我。

③某类人的名词可以用作动词来表示动作,如:

She nursed her husband back to health.她看护丈夫,使他恢复了健康。

④某些抽象名词也可作动词。如:

We lunched together.我们在一起吃了午餐。

3)形容词转化为动词

有少数形容词可以转化为动词。如:

We will try our best to better our living conditions.我们要尽力改善我们的生活状况。

4)副词转化为动词

有少数副词可以转化为动词。例如:

Murder will out.(谚语)恶事终必将败露。

5)形容词转化为名词

①表示颜色的形容词常可转化为名词,如:

You should be dressed in black at the funeral.你在葬礼中该穿黑色衣服

②某些形容词如old, young, poor, rich, wounded, injured等与the连用,表示一类人,作主语时,

谓语用复数如下,如:

The old in our village are living a happy life.我们村的老年人过着幸福的生活。

2.派生法

在词根前面加前缀或在词根后面加后缀构成一个与原单词意义相近或截然相反的新词叫作派生法。

1)前缀

除少数前缀外,前缀一般改变单词的意义,不改变词性;后缀一般改变词类,而不引起词义的变化。

(1)表示否定意义的前缀常用的有dis-, il-, im-, in-, ir-, mis-, non-, un-等,在单词的前面加这类前

缀常构成与该词意义相反的新词。例如:

appear出现→disappear消失correct正确的→incorrect不正确的

lead带领→mislead领错stop停下→non-stop不停

(2)表示其他意义的前缀常用的有a-(多构成表语形容词), anti- (反对;抵抗), auto- (自动), co- (共

同), en- (使), inter- (互相), re- (再;又), sub- (下面的;次;小), tele- (强调距离)等。例如:

alone单独的antigas防毒气的autochart自动图表cooperate合作

enjoy使高兴internet互联网reuse再用subway地铁telephone电话

2)后缀

英语单词不仅可以通过加前缀构成新词,也可加后缀构成新词。后缀通常会改变单词的词性,构成意义相近的其他词性;少数后缀还会改变词义,变为与原来词义相反的新词。

(1)构成名词的后缀常用的有-ence,-(e)r/ -or (从事某事的人),-ese (某地人),-ess (雌性),-ful

(一……),-ian (精通……的人),-ist (专业人员),-ment (性质;状态),-ness (性质;状态),-tion(动作;过程)等。例如:

differ不同于→difference区别write写→writer作家

Japan日本→Japanese日本人act表演→actress女演员

mouth口→mouthful一口music音乐→musician音乐家

(2)构成动词的后缀常用的有-(e)n (多用于形容词之后),-fy (使……化),-ize (使……成为)。例如:

wide→widen加宽beauty→beautify

美化pure→purify 提纯real→realize意识到

organ→organize组织

(3)构成形容词的后缀常用的有-al,

-able (有能力的),-(a)n(某国人的),-en (多用于表示材料的名词后),-ern (方向的),-ese(某国人的),-ful,-(ic)al,-ish,-ive,-less (表示否定),-like (像……的),-ly,-ous,-some,-y (表示天气)等。例如:

nature自然→natural自然的reason道理→reasonable有道理的

America美国→American美国的China中国→Chinese中国人的

gold金子→golden金的east东→eastern东方的

child孩子→childish孩子气的snow雪→snowy雪的

(4)构成副词的常用后缀有-ly (主要用于形容词之后表示方式或程度),-ward(s) (主要用于表示方

位的词之后表示方向)。例如:

angry生气的→angrily生气地

to到→towards朝……,向……

east东方→eastward向东

(5)构成数词的后缀有-teen (十几),-ty (几十),-th (构成序数词)。例如:

six六→sixteen十六→sixteenth第十六

four四→forty四十→fortieth第四十

4.截短法(缩略法)

截短法,即将单词缩写,词义和词性保持不变,主要有截头、去尾、截头去尾等形式。

1)截头

3)截头去尾

5.混合法(混成法)

混合法,即将两个词混合或各取一部分紧缩而成一个新词。后半部分表示主体;前半部分表示属性。

6.首尾字母缩略法

首尾字母缩略法,即用单词首尾字母组成一个新词。读音主要有两种形式,即各字母分别读音;

第三讲现代汉语的构词法和构形法 一.词的构成单位——语素 1.语素的含义 语素,也叫词素,如前所述,一般定义为语言中最小的音义结合体,是构词的材料。有的学者将语素和词素分别解说,认为应该严格区分语素同词素。如刘叔新先生就指出:“词素应就词的构造成素、即一个词能够划分出的小于词的构成单位而言。它是词或词干的直接组成成分。语素的含义则广阔得多;指的是语言中一切最小的(本身不能再分成两个的)音义结合单位,包括最简单的、不能划分出不同构造成分来的词……、词内可以划分出的最小音义结合单位……,以及句子结构中有一定语气和音调形式的句调和有一定关系意义的特定词序……。因此,语素包括了词素,但是很多语素却并非词素。”“一个词,要是本身不能划分出不同的构造成分来,是个最小的音义结合单位,那么它当然是个语素,却不能说是个词素——那样说在逻辑上或公理上显然通不过去。词素是比词小的、构造词或词干的直接成分,一个词不能够同时说它是词素。所谓‘单词素词’的说法,当然也很不合逻辑。”1刘先生这里所说的“语素”和“词素”的内涵同目前学界通用的“语(词)素”的内涵有所不同:被刘先生重新定义了的“语素”不仅函概所有的音义结合体,还包括句调和词序;而同样被重新定义了的“词素”仅指“一个词能够划分出的小于词的构成单位”2。这样界定“语素”、“词素”作为一种探索未尝不可,但却不能就依此指责学界“语素”、“词素”不分,同样也不能依此断言“单词(语)素词”的说法是“很不合逻辑”的,因为所用术语的内涵有所不同。我们倒觉得,把“走”、“读”、“回”、“家”叫做“单语(词)素词”没有什么不好;而若按刘先生的意见管它们叫做“语素”,管“走读”、“回家”中的“走”、“读”、“回”、“家”叫做“词素”,反而会纠缠不清,徒增麻烦。何况在语言学中,处于构成关系中的上下级语言单位发生重合的现象又哪里仅体现在词的层面,都知道句子是由词构成的,句子和词为上下级语言单位,可不是照样有大量的“独词句”3存在吗?我们是否也应赋予这些能独立构成句子的词以一个“词”以外的名称呢? 2.语素的确认 由于汉语中,语素、音节以及记录语素、音节的汉字往往一致,但也有不一致的时候,所以,碰到一个汉字或一个音节的时候,是语素还是语素的构成部分,是需要作一下鉴别的,这便是语素的确认问题。 关于语素的确认,以往一般采用的是所谓的“替换法”。关于“替换法”,黄伯荣、廖序东《现代汉语》(增订二版)(上册)有一段颇有代表性的说明,兹录如下:确定语素可以采用替换法,用已知语素替代有待确定是否语素的语言单位。“蜡烛”中的“蜡”和“烛”可以为别的已知语素所替代。……可见“蜡”和“烛”各是一个语素。须注意的是两种替代缺一不可。例如“蝴蝶”中的“蝴”,虽然可以为其他语素所替代,如“粉蝶、彩蝶”等,“蝶”却不能为别的已知语素所代替,即“蝴~”不能换填其他语素。因此“蝴蝶”只是一个语素。“蝶”在别的组合“粉蝶、彩蝶”中仍是一个语素。采用替代法还要注 1刘叔心《汉语描写词汇学》第64~65页,商务印书馆,1990。 2这种观点可能源之于吕叔湘先生。吕先生曾指出:“语素可以定义为‘最小的语音语义结合体’。也可以拿‘词素’做最小的单位,只包括不能单独成为词的语素。”见吕叔湘《汉语语法分析问题》第15页,商务印书馆,1979。 3这里所说的“独词句”同语法学中所说的“独词句”有所不同:语法学中所说的“独词句”指的是非主谓句中“无主句”以外的各种句子,有的由偏正词组等构成,有的由一个词构成;而这里所说的“独词句”仅指由一个词构成的句子。
