You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage one

Questions 33 to 37 are based on the following passage.

A range of new commuting bikes are promising to make everyday travel by bicycle as comfortable and fashionable as it is cheap. They also allow you to combine workout (锻炼)with transportation. ― it’s convenient; it keeps me fit; and it saves money,‖ says Scott Infanger, a professor at the University of North Alabama, who regularly bikes his daughter, Elizabeth, 7, to school on the way to his nearby office.

Bikes stores and manufacturers across the nation are reporting a signification rise lately in sales. ―They’re selling out of all the commuting bikes—all bikes, actually—that they can get th eir hands on,‖ says Bill Field, a consultant who has followed the bicycle industry for decades. Fields predicts a 20 percent increase in the ―comfort bikes‖, which includes commuting bikes, by the end of the year.

One big block to a rise in bike commuting is a concern about safety. In 2006, 773 people were killed bicycling, and tens of thousands injured. Rutgers researchers who compared the safety of walking, biking, and driving found that, per kilometer traveled, bicycle fatalities(死亡人数)were 11 times higher than car fatalities.

Still, experts say, the story has another side. In the Rutgers study, the rate of pedestrian (行人) fatalities associated with walking on the sidewalk was a full 36 times higher than car fatalities. One Danish study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that because of the health benefits of bicycle commuting, the death rate among noncyclists was 39 percent higher than among the bikes.

33. According to Professor Infanger, bike commuting is .

A) convenient, health, and economical

B) fast, economical, and health

C) convenient, fashionable, and health

B) It is difficult for customers to buy bicycles.

C) Bike stores do not have many bicycles in store.

D)There is a 20 percent increase in production.

35. According to the passage, more people will consider bike commuting if .

A) there is less concern about its safety

B) they travel within one kilometer

C) bikes are made more comfortable

D) they live closer to where they work

36. The Rutgers study shows that it is most dangerous .

A) to become a cyclist B) to walk on the sidewalk

C) to travel by bicycling D) to travel by driving

37. By saying ―the story has another side‖, the experts probably mean that .

A) bicycling is more dangerous than sidewalk

B) cycling is not dangerous on the sidewalk

C) the benefits of cycling outweigh the risks

D) it may not be worthwhile to take the risks

Passage two

Questions 38 to 42 are based on the following passage.

Once in Britain, family members would all get annoyed at the phone call while watching TV programs like The Two Ronnies. This does not often happen now—we are either twice as smart or twice as inattentive as we used to be.

Ofcom’s research demonstrates that the British have become a nation of media junkies(成瘾者). Now they spend more time on the Internet and do much net visiting while watching television. It is unlikely that the whole family will be in the living room these days—unless Doctor Who is on.

Ofcom’s data show that despite all the dis tractions(分心)offered by the Internet, which were supposed to threaten the basis of television viewing, the British remain fixed to the small screen.

The average time spent in front of TV fixed at three hours and 38 minutes a day, only six minutes down from 2003. Radio listening has suffered a little more in that time, but every person still spends a further 2 hours and 44 minutes a day with the radio on in the background.

What has changed in that traditional media no longer occupy all attention for those under 45.

About a third of 16 to 44-year-olds admit to using their computer while watching television. Well over half of them will pick up the mobile when watching EastEnders.

It’s a change in habits making us worry about the change of tradition –but in reality it’s a natural response to the increasing media.

Tiny people might be living inside of your computer—eating, sleeping, and going to school just like you do. But don’t be alarmed: This civilization isn’t real. The people are characters from the game The Sims, the best-selling creation of Will Wright’s.

After graduation, Wright got a job working on a typical fighting video game called Raid on Bungeling Bay. In this game, the players drops bombs on a city. Wright found that his favorite part of the design process was creating the landscape(风景), not destroying it.

Wright’s dream, like that of many of his friends, was to produce his own video game. He designed SimCity, but for years could n’t find anyone willing to invest the money needed to put it on the market. Then one day, he met computer-game producer Jeff Braum, who loved the idea of a noncombative (非打斗的)game. Together they formed a small company—and a whole new type of video games ca lled ―simulation (模拟)reality‖ that allow players to build virtual societies. SimCity came out soon, followed by The Sims eleven years later.

―We spend a lot of time doing research before we start making the games—usually about a year or two,‖ says Wright. ―For my latest game, Spore, I started the research process about six years ago.‖

Today, Wright employs a large team of computer programmers, designers, and graphic artists to help him bring his ideas to life. He owes his success to three things: his curiosity, his persistence, and his team.

D) Simulation reality can be applied to both combative and noncombative games. Passage Four

Questions 48 to 52 are based on the following passage.

Over the centuries, scientists have been trying hard to find satisfactory substitutes for precious stones but failed many times.

Many years ago, a chemist surprised the world by saying: ―It should be possible to make a precious stone that not only looks like a real thing, but that is the real thing. The only difference should be that one crystal would made by man, the other by nature.‖

At first this did not seem like a particular hard task. Scientists began to try making synthetic diamonds towards the ends of the eighteenth century and discovered a key scientific fact: diamonds are a form of carbon, which is a very common element.

Then, why not change a cheap and plentiful substance, carbon, into a rare and expensive one, diamond? This change takes place in nature, so it should be possible to make it happen in the laboratory.

It should be possible, but for 150 years every effort failed though several people believed that they had solved the diamond riddle during this period.

The real success came after the scientists realized that, in changing carbon into diamonds, unbelievably heavy pressure and extremely high temperature are indispensable, and carbon needs to be dissolved in a melted metal that helps the reaction to take place more easily.

Under these conditions, a number of shiny crystals were produced in the laboratories of the General Electric Company. The results of careful analysis s howed that the chemist was right: these jewels of the laboratory were not like diamonds; they were diamonds.

A) felt it even harder to succeed in making synthetic diamonds

B) soon succeeded in changing cheap carbon into expensive diamonds

C) found that carbon is very common in nature and so are diamonds

D) felt it more hopeful to succeed in marking synthetic diamonds

50. According to the passage, the real success probably came_____.

A) around 1900 B) 150 years ago

C) around 1950s D) in the 19th century

51. If something is indispensable ( paragraph 6), it is_____.

You should choose the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage One

To build power plants near the places where natural gas is found in large quantities, it is necessary to open huge new gas fields and construct the infrastructure(基础设施) required for large-scale production. Many thousands of miles of power lines must be put up to transmit electricity to centers of consumer demand. On the other hand, if the power plants are built near the centers of consumer demand, in order for them to burn gas, it is also necessary to build thousands of miles of pipelines to supply the fuel. Such pipelines can easily cost several million dollars per mile.

Large coal mines, in contrast, are more widely spread and closer to most demand centers than natural gas fields. Increasing the supply of coal is possible by using the existing railroad system without constructing major new lines, although modifications(改建)must be made to smoothly handle the increased traffic. Such a consideration provides coal an advantage over natural gas in most cases.

Although coal is available at a comparatively lower and more stable price than natural gas, constructing a coal-fired power plant is much more expensive than one fueled by natural gas. Therefore, how to fuel a new electric power plant is still a fundamental issue for discussion.

36. What is the passage mainly about?

Passage Two

In almost every urban are, the city is warmer than its immediately surrounding suburban and rural areas. Do the cities themselves generate enough heat to raise the temperature evidently? Is there something about cities that allow them to hold heat?

The heat generated by buildings, factories, vehicles, lighting, and other products of modern technology is enough to raise the temperature a degree or two in densely populated (人口稠密的) cities. The hot air blown out by air conditioners(空调机) during summer months affects the temperature outside as surely, if less considerably, as they affect the temperature inside an air-conditioned room.

But even if cities did not generate their own heat, they would still be warmer than rural or suburban areas. When the sun shines on the flat countryside, the light is reflected back to the sky. When the sun shines in a city, the light bounces (弹回)from building to building like a Ping-Pong ball—more of the sun’s warmth is absorbed in the city. In fact, buildings and c ement streets can hold more heat and more sunlight than grass, trees, or the fields in the country.

It is commonly assumed that air pollution is what makes cities warmer. Since dust particles can absorb radiation, the theory goes, the more polluted the city, the higher the temperature is artificially raised.

41. The word ―immediately‖ in the first sentence most probably means _____.

A) at once B) directly C) closely D) right away

42. The answer to the second question in the first paragraph is given in _____.

A) air pollution is thus produces

B) the light is reflected back to the sky

C) heat is generated by the buildings

D) the temperature is surely raised

45. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A)Buildings in cities can generate and hold heat.

B)Grass, trees and farm fields hold more heat.

C)Dust particles can generate radiation.

D)There is more sunlight in cities than in their suburbs.

Passage Three

Genetic (基因的)difference between bees in a bee group have been thought to be very small and unimportant. Scientists have thought that the work of each bee is determined by the way the bee is brought up and fed. Now these beliefs have been proved to be mistaken. Two groups of American scientists have shown independently that most of the complex behavior of bees is not the result of upbringing(养育)after all. It is inherited(遗传的). Both teams of scientists were surprised by their findings. The question of how different genes make different bees do different jobs is, however, so far unanswered.

The findings provide a big puzzle for biologists studying evolution. Bees are among the most co-operative of all insects. This had been explained by a theory of ―the selfish gene‖. According to this theory, all bees have very similar genes and their co-operative behavior promotes the spread of these genes. From this it would follow that genetic variety should reduce co-operation. Now it seems the opposite is true. The scientists are fairly confident that their findings will turn out to apply to other social insects, for example, ants as well as bees.

46. The two groups of American scientists have shown that different bees do different jobs

because they ______.

A) are brought up in different ways

B) eat different food

C) undergo different stages of evolution

D) have different genes

47. What was once thought to be important in determining a bee’s behavior?

A) Social activities. B) Upbringing. C) Different jobs. D) Genes.

48. Up to now scientists cannot explain _____.

A) why bees are social insects

B) why bees have complex behavior

C) how genes control bees’ behavior

D) how their findings apply to social insects

49. The biologists studying evolution are puzzled by ______.

A) genetic differences between bees C) co-operative behavior of bees

B) similar genes shared by bees D) work division among bees

50. The word ―follow‖ in Line 4, Paragraph 2 could be repl aced by ______.

A) go behind B) go on C) be safe D) be true

Passage Four

The prices of raw materials and produce change every day, so offers are usually only firm for about twenty-four hours. The prices of manufactured goods, on the other hand, remain unchanged, as a rule, for weeks or months, so buyers can place orders on the basis of a manufacture’s printed price list.

There are many ways of selling manufactured goods to foreign buyers. A manufacturer may maintain his own traveling representatives, or set up his own offices or companies abroad. Alternatively he may sell to an export house; in this case there is little financial risk for the producer, since the merchant acts as a buyer and pays for the goods himself. A third possibility is for the manufacturer to appoint foreign agents, who will work on commission. In this case goods may be sent unsold, and the agent is expected to obtain the best price available; but this practice is more common with produce exports.

A firm order is often called an indent(订货单),and there is a special type of commission agent called an indent house. A buyer either places a closed indent, which names the supplier, or an open indent, which leaves the choice of supplier to the agent. The indent agent usually takes a commission on the value of his purchase.

51. It can be inferred from the passage that the price for an order of TV sets may be set according

to ______.

A)the manufacturer’s printed price list C) the value of the row materials

B) a rule that remains unchanged D) daily changes of prices

52. How many ways of selling manufactured goods are mentioned in the passage?

A) Five. B) Four. C) Three D) Two

53. An appointed foreign agent makes money by _____.

A) obtaining the best prices C) buying low and selling high

B) taking a fee for his service D) earning profits from his sales

54. When an agent gets an open indent, he will ______.

A) sell the goods to the supplier C) find the name of the supplier

B) supply the needed goods D) find a supplier to order the goods

55. This passage mainly tells us about ______.

A) foreign agents C) open indents

B) Exporting practice D) Changing prices

新理念大学英语三级阅读教程

本文节选自Iron John: A Book About Men Iron John: A Book About Men by Robert Bly. Copyright 1994, 2004 by Robert Bly We talk a great deal about "the American man," as if there were some constant quality that remained stable over decades, or even within a single decade. The men who live today have veered far away from the Saturnian, old-man-minded farmer, proud of his introversion, who arrived in New England in 1630, willing to sit through three services in an unheated church. In the South, an expansive, motherbound cavalier developed, and neither of these two "American men" resembled the greedy railroad entrepreneur that later developed in the Northeast, nor the reckless I-will-do-without culture settlers of the West. 【这一段里作者提到哪几种美国人?他提这些的目的是什么?】 Even in our own era the agreed-on model has changed dramatically. During the fifties, for example, an American character appeared with some consistency that became a model of manhood adopted by many men: the Fifties male. He got to work early, labored responsibly, supported his wife and children, and admired discipline. Reagan is a sort of mummified version of this dogged type. This sort of man didn't see women's souls well, but he appreciated their bodies; and his view of culture and America's part in it was boyish and optimistic. Many of his qualities were strong and positive, but underneath the charm and bluff there was, and there remains, much isolation, deprivation, and passivity. Unless he has an enemy, he isn't sure that he is alive. The Fifties man was supposed to like football, be aggressive, stick up for the United States, never cry, and always provide. But receptive space or intimate space was missing in this image of a man. The personality lacked some sense of flow. The psyche lacked compassion in a way that encouraged the unbalanced pursuit of the Vietnam war, just as, later, the lack of what we might call "garden" space inside Reagan's head led to his callousness and brutality toward the powerless in El Salvador【查工具书:是怎么回事?】, toward old people here, the unemployed, schoolchildren, and poor people in general. 【Fifties Male有什么特点?】 The Fifties male had a clear vision of what a man was, and what male

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三) (总分:25.00,做题时间:90分钟) 一、单项选择题(总题数:5,分数:25.00) Task 6 The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better. Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying about it being so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems. Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night! Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise--if we shout loudly enough about it. (分数:5.00) (1).Why are scientists surprised by the findings in their noise study?(分数:1.00) A.Because the world is becoming more and more noisy. √ B.Because they have learned that noise is also a kind of pollution. If with the oncoming darkness of the 3rd night you knew that the sun would never rise for you again, how would you spend those 3 precious days? What would you most want to let your gaze rest upon? I, naturally, should want most to see the things which have become dear to me through my years of darkness. You, too, would want to let your eyes rest long on the things that have become dear to you so that you could take the memory of them with you in the night that loomed (降临) before you. I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer world to me. I should want not merely the outline of her face, so that I could cherish it in my memory, but to study that face and find in it the living evidence of the sympathetic tenderness and patience with which she accomplished the difficult task of my education. I should like to see in her eyes that strength of character which has enabled her to stand firm in the face of difficulties, and that compassion for all humanity which she has revealed to me so often. Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for just 3 days! 1.What can be inferred from the 2nd paragraph? A. the author is a deaf B. the author is a blind person C.
