This standard specifies the marking of vehicle parts, which must carry a date marking proving the date of manufacture –in order to comply with official regulations,

–in order to allow sorting according to date of manufacture, or

in order to allow retracing of customer complaints (retraceability of parts).

Examples are given in Table 11) to Table 12 and in Figure 1 to Figure 7.Requirements

A date marking as specified in this standard must be applied to each vehicle part.

Whether date marking is necessary or not must be specified on the drawing (see text macro NO-E2in Volkswagen standard VW 01014, Figure 7). This applies also to the size and position of the mark‐ing.

It must be ensured that the marking remains legible over the service life of the part. The marking must be applied to the parts in a permanent and non-removable manner using suitable manufacturing methods, e. g. embossing, stamping, electric discharge machining, casting.

Typeface H (medium-spaced lettering) acc. to DIN 1451-4 is to be used for the markings. If required, the respective manufacturing method, e.g., "cast", "etched", "embossed", "stamped" or "electric dis‐charge machined" must be specified in the drawing. If there is no such specification in the drawing, the choice of the manufacturing method is left to the manufacturer.Further notes regarding the marking of parts are given in VW 10500.Date marking using symbols Date of manufacturing (month, year)

The months of manufacture must be marked in clockwise direction, with the markings being raised between 0,5 mm and 0,8 mm.

The number of markings corresponds to the number of the calendar month in which the part was

manufactured.

Four- and five-digit type: year, calendar week, day of the week, shift

This type of date marking consists of the following elements: year code according to type K of this standard (see Table 6), unencoded specification of the calendar week from 01 to 52, specification of the day of the week from 1 to 7 (type P, see Figure 4). The marking may optionally comprise an additional shift specification from A to C, i.e., shifts 1 to 3 (type R, see Figure 5).

Figure 4 – Type P

Legend 11st digit: year acc. to VW 10560, type K, Table 6. In this example: A = 2010

22nd and 3rd digit: calendar week. In the example: 01 = 1st calendar week (for single-digit calendar weeks with leading zero).

3

4th digit: day of the week in question. In the example: 5 = fifth day of the first calendar week.

34th digit: day of the week in question. In the example: 5 = fifth day of the first calendar week.

4

5th digit: shift marking In the example: A = shift 1.

The marking includes the date of manufacture comprising month and year in encoded form. The marking must be encoded as follows:1.Number for year of manufacture

Date marking for SLI batteries

Week, year (formation date)

Figure 6 – Type M

Legend a 03 = 3rd week b

11 = year 2011

The formation date of the battery must be applied on the negative terminal post as shown in Figure 6. Batteries formed from Monday to Wednesday receive the date marking of the current week. Bat‐teries formed from Thursday to Sunday receive the date marking of the following week. Sealed bat‐teries acc. to VW 75073 deviate from this specification due to the quarantine period common for this type of battery. For these batteries, the date marking specifies the week at the end of the quarantine period in which a test with an OK was performed. The procedure used for the formation date also applies to the specification of the week. Markings applied to the battery cover near the negative terminal post by means of hot embossing are permissible.Date marking for engine and transmission control units Day, month, year
