Lesson89A slip of the tongue口误 Who made the only funny joke that evening and why? People will do anything to see a free show--even if it is a bad one. When the news got round that a comedy show would be presented at our local cinema by the P.and U.Bird Seed Company,we all rushed to see it.We had to queue for hours to get in and there must have been several hundred people present just before the show began.Unfortunately, the show was one of the dullest we have ever seen. Those who failed to get in need not have felt disappointed,as many of the artistes who should have appeared did not come. The only funny things we heard that evening came from the advertiser at the beginning of the programme. He was obviously very nervous and for some minutes stood awkwardly before the microphone. As soon as he opened his mouth, everyone burst out laughing. We all know what the poor man should have said, but what he actually said was:'This is the Poo and Ee Seed Bird Company.Good ladies, evening and gentlemen!" 【New words and expressions】(7) 1slip[slip]n.小错误 2comedy['k?midi]n.喜剧 present[pri'zent,'prez?nt]v.演出a. 排队 5dull[d?l]a. 报幕员 ★slip(1)n.小错误 make a slip失误,犯小错误、说漏嘴 a slip of the tongue失言,口误 (2)v.滑、滑倒slide

Lesson 57 Can I help you, madam? 【Text】 A woman in jeans stood at the window of an expensive shop. Though she hesitated for a moment, she finally went in and asked to see a dress that was in the window. The assistant who served her did not like the way she was dressed. Glancing at her scornfully, he told her that the dress was sold. The woman walked out of the shop angrily and decided to punish the assistant next day. She returned to the shop the following morning dressed in a fur coat, with a handbag in one hand and a long umbrella in the other. After seeking out the rude assistant, she asked for the same dress. Not realizing who she was, the assistant was eager to serve her this time. With great difficulty, he climbed into the shop window to get the dress. As soon as she saw it, the woman said she did not like it.

Book II Lesson 25 Do the English speak English? I arrived in London at last. The railway station was big, black and dark. I did not know the way to my hotel, so I asked a porter. I not only spoke English very carefully, but very clearly as well. The porter, however, could not understand me; I repeated my question several times and at last he understood. He answered me, but he spoke neither slowly nor clearly. 'I am a foreigner,' I said. Then he spoke slowly, but I could not understand him. My teacher never spoke English like that! The porter and I looked at each other and smiled. Then he said something and I understood it. 'You'll soon learn English!' he said.I wonder. In England, each man speaks a different language. The English understand each other, but I don't understand them ! Do they speak English ? Book II Lesson 26 The best art critics ?I am an art student and I paint a lot of pictures. Many people pretend that they understand modern art. They always tell you what a picture is 'about'. Of course, many pictures arc not 'about' anything. They are just pretty patterns. We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material. I think that young children often appreciate modern pictures better than anyone else. They notice more. My sister is only seven, but she always tells me whether my pictures are good or not. She came into my room yesterday.' What are you doing ?' she asked.' I'm hanging this picture on the wall,' I answered. 'It's a new one. Do you like it ?' She looked at it critically for a moment.' It's all right,' she said, 'but isn't it upside-down ?' I looked at it again. She was right! It was! Book II Lesson 27 A wet night Late in the afternoon, the boys put up their tent in the middle of a field. As soon as this was done, they cooked a meal over an open fire.

C 1 must not 2 need not D 1 had to go 2 should have gone 3 should begin 2. A 1 queue 2 single B (sample sentences) 1 It was so funny that I still laugh whenever I think about it! 2 It's funny (that) he hasn't replied to your letter. 3. People will do anything to see a free show..., 可以判断出a. they didn't cost anything 是课文所暗示的情形,而其他3个选择虽然是课文所提及的内容,但不是There was a big demand of tickets 的原因. 所以选a. a. badly 是副词,不能用在动词be 后面做表语;b. had one 前面应该有冠词a 才正确;c. bad 是形容词,前面不应该有冠词a. 只有a. did they have to 是疑问句语序。而b. they had to 是陈述句语序;c. had they to 不是正确的表达方式,意思不通;d. they did have to 语序也不正确,应将did 提前,

Lesson 45 A clear conscience问心无愧 How did Sam get his money back? The whole village soon learnt that a large sum of money had been lost. Sam Benton, the local butcher, had lost his wallet while taking his savings to the post office. Sam was sure that the wallet must have been found by one of the villagers, but it was not returned to him. Three months passed, and then one morning, Sam found his wallet outside his front door. It had been wrapped up in newspaper and it contained half the money he had lost, together with a note which said: 'A thief, yes, but only 50 per cent a thief!' Two months later, some more money was sent to Sam with another note: 'Only 25 per cent a thief now!' In time, all Sam's money was paid back in this way. The last note said: 'I am 100 per cent honest now!' 一、New words and expressions 生词和短语 1) adj.透明的,清澈的,洁净的 clear glass 透明的玻璃 the clear water of a mountain lake山上清澈的湖水 a clear sky 晴朗的天空 a clear face洁净的脸 a girl with clear eyes 有着明亮眼睛的女孩子 2)adj. 易懂的,明白的 a clear explanation 清楚明白的解释 a clear meaning 一个明白的意思 speak so that your words are clear说话说得要令人听清楚

A slip of the tongue,(标题)说走了嘴,失言。 Youve made some slips (of the pen) in your report. When he was nervous, he would sometimes make a slip of tongue. Are you sure that it was just a slip of tongue? People will do anything to see a free show… He will do anything to save his childs life. He will do anything for the child.

When the news got round that a comedy show would be presented at our local cinema by the P. and U. Bird Seed Company… (2)get round在这里表示消息、谣言等“传开”(也能够用get around/about): The word soon got round that there was buried treasure in that cave. Bad news gets round quickly. 【篇四】 …there must have been several hundred people present just before the show began.…… Those who failed to get in need not have felt disappointed, as many of the artistes who should have appeared did not come.
