5.Translate the sentences into Chinese.

1. As a small boy I was always fascinated at the sounds the coins made as they

were dropped into the jar. They landed with a merry jingle when the jar was almost empty. Then the tones gradually muted to a dull thud as the jar was filled.

2. My dad was a man of few words, and never lectured me on the values of

determination, perseverance, and faith. The pickle jar had taught me all these virtues far more eloquently than the most flowery of words could have done.(注意values和the most flowery of words的意思)

3. To my amazement, there, as if it had never been removed, stood the old pickle

jar, the bottom already covered with coins.

(这句话的主体结构是there stood the old pickle jar。)

4. And I'm thankful for that because, even though we're still relatively young,

I can already see how it's been an important building block in both our

5. What with playing tennis together and sharing bedrooms until I was 15, Serena

and I have always been close.(注意:what with 的意思是“由于,因为”,用于列举某种状况或问题的各种原因。)

3. Pagnol saw Provence as a rural, conservative region with little trust in strangers,

whereas George viewed it as a place which attracted the rich and artistic.

4. He became curious to see the glamour of Provence where many famous people

5. Because he had time to spare and the restaurant was near the station. Perhaps he

wanted to start his journey to France with a French meal.

6. He realized that he would have to sit uncomfortably for six hours, to find a hotel,

sleep in an uncomfortable bed and make an effort to find the sights, sounds and

8. Answer the questions about the phrases

1. No, you don’t have to do it.

2. They are likely to be different.

3. No, you don’t really do it. It only happens in your mind as you imagine it.

4. Unfairly, because you know that in a different light it will look different, so it’s not a fair way to examine it.

5. No, you live alone, not sharing with anyone.

6. Yes, it is so crowded that you can’t make your way through the people without pushing

a bit.

7. You have enough money for what you need, plus a bit extra --- the extra amount is spare.

10. Work in pairs and discuss the questions.

1. What are the advantages of being an armchair traveler?

Example answer: To be an armchair traveler is cheaper and safer, helps develop imagination, and takes much less effort.

Objection: This makes you lazy and you never gain first-hand experiences of other places.

Counter-argument: Actually, it takes effort to use your imagination well, and second-hand experience is still another kind of experience which helps you to understand other places and people. As Picasso said, “Everything you can imagine is real.”Some people travel a lot and still don’t understand much.

2. Would George’s lifestyle in London suit you?

Example answer: Yes, he has enough money, he doesn’t need to work, and he can read whatever he likes. I like that kind of life.

Objection: He must be lonely and he doesn’t seem to contribute to the community or to his country.

Counter-argument: He is not a burden on anyone or a nuisance. He doesn’t seem lonely, and lots of people who work hard now dream of retiring like him when they are old.

3. Do you agree with the disadvantages of travel which George mentions?

Example answer: Yes, travelling can be tiring, crowded and uncomfortable. I’ve often experienced that on local buses.

Objection: But that’s only at certain times of the day and if you get a car, you can travel in comfort without a crowd.

Counter-argument: Not too many people have cars. The traffic will be a big problem

with many traffic jams and then travel will be even more tiring, crowded and uncomfortable.

4. Do you agree that it’s better to travel than to arrive?

Example answer: No, most people who travel simply want to get to their destination. Objection: But that is a saying that draws attention to the need to have an open attitude of curiosity, learning and adventure when you travel, so that travelling is actually the purpose because you never really reach the destination in your life.

Counter-argument: That sounds nice, but in fact most people who travel a lot, like people who commute to work, just want to get to the destination. They don’t want to think about the philosophy of life.

5. Do you think tourism is something to be encouraged or discouraged?

Example answer: It should be encouraged --- we need the money from tourists and what’s more, it helps foreign tourists understand our region and our heritage. Objection: Tourists usually only stay in one place for a short time, so they don’t really understand much of the place. Also, encouraging too many tourists may result in damage to historical sites and works of art.

Counter-argument: We can overcome these problems by giving tourist guides better training to help visitors understand more about the tourist attractions and to be responsible travelers.

1. Sleepy, when describing places, means “very quiet and does not have much activity”; when describing people, it means “feeling tired and wanting to sleep”. The irony here is that a hotel is a place for guests to sleep, but in the passage the sleepy hotel turns out to be so noisy that guests can’t sleep at all.

2. The person was made to leave. Perhaps he was “ask urgently”, but it is clear that he had no other choice but to leave. The men were obviously security guards, probably working for the conference organizers or perhaps for the man from the Ministry of Education.

3. He was probably annoyed and unhappy about this sudden challenge. How could he give an hour’s lecture in ten minutes?

4. This indicates that the group talked in a loud voice or whispered in a voice that everyone else could hear their talking. By using the word whispering which contradicts the word loudly, it shows the irony of the situation. The gestures show the group were against their enemies in the other group. They probably made such gestures to distract the first group from their singing so that their own performance would seem better, than they would win the duel.

5. “Lost the will to live” is an exaggerated way to say they had no interest at all. They were very bored.

6. Perhaps they were laughing because they felt embarrassed, but more likely because they felt it was funny that so many people were squashed into the cupboard when they only wanted to find an exit, and they were trying to keep quiet in order not to disturb the performance.

It is an adjective phrase. 2) News always has the plural form but takes a singular verb. E.g. The news is bad. 2. This changed conviction into certainty: 1) In the past it was my belief that Hitler would soon attack the Soviet Union; but now it was no longer a belief, it had become a fact. 2) conviction: a very firm and sincere belief e.g.: 1.

Lesson one The Middle Eastern Bazaar 一.Background information 二.Brief overview and writing style This text is a piece of description. In this article, the author describes a vivid and live scene of noisy hilarity of the Middle Eastern Bazaar to readers. At first, he describes the general atmosphere of the bazaar. The entrance of the bazaar is aged and noisy. However, as one goes through the bazaar, the noise the entrance fades away. One of the peculiarities of the Eastern bazaar is that shopkeepers dealing in the same kind of goods gather in the same area. Then the author introduces some strategies for bargaining with the seller in the bazaar which are quite useful. After that he describes some impressive specific market of the bazaar particularly includ ing the copper-smiths market, the carpet-market, the spice-market, the food-market, the dye-market, the pottery-market and the carpenter‘s market which honeycomb the bazaar. The typical animal in desert----camels----can also attract attention by their disdainful expressions. To the author the most unforgettable thing in the bazaar is the place where people make linseed oil. Hence he describes this complicated course with great details. The author‘s vivid and splendid description takes readers back to hundreds of thousands of years age to the aged middle eastern bazaar, which gives the article an obvious diachronic and spatial sense. The appeal to readers‘visual and hearing sense throughout the description is also a marked feature of this piece of writing. In short, being a Westerner, the author views the oriental culture and civilization as old and backward but interesting and fantastic. Through careful observation and detailed comparison, the author depicts some new and original peculiarities of the Middle Eastern bazaar which are unique and distinguished. 三.Detailed study of the text Paragraph 1 the general atmosphere of the bazaar 1.

本册教材主要有Alphabet, Clothes, School Subjects, Time, Routines, Weekend activities, Transport, Seasons, Festivals等九个话题。
