The Powerful Benefits of Lifelong Learning Many people will tell you that you really never stop learning. Others will say it is never too late to learn. The Chinese say, "Continue to learn in the journey of life." the need for continuous learning throughout your lifetime is an important part of what makes you human.

Lifelong learning is the "lifelong, voluntary, and self-motivated"pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons. The term recognizes that learning is not confined to childhood or the classroom, but takes place throughout life and in a range of situations. During the last fifty years, constant scientific and technological innovation and change has had a profound effect on learning needs and styles. Learning can no longer be divided into a place and time to acquire knowledge (school) and a place and time to apply the knowledge acquired (the workplace). Instead, learning can be seen as something that takes place on an on-going basis from our daily interactions with others and with the world around us.

Here then are five ways in which lifelong learning provides powerful benefits. Sharpens Your Mind

Continuous learning helps to keep your mind sharp and improve your memory, especially as you grow older. It is a known fact that learning has beneficial effects on the brain. Research has shown that people with more education are less likely to have dementia in old age. Just like your body requires exercise to stay fit, your brain requires exercise to remain healthy. The best way to improve your reasoning and cognitive skills is to continually learn something new.

Sharpens Your Confidence

Sometimes, when someone has not stepped out of their routine for a while, they haven't taken on a new challenge or really applied themselves to learning something new, they may find the experience a bit daunting. With lifelong learning this fear is more easily overcome. You gain confidence in your ability to learn and to share the information with others; you will be full of confidence in yourself.

Sharpens Your Interpersonal Skills

While lifelong learning can take place in the quiet of a library reading a book, much of your learning will likely take place where you meet other people who share your same interest. The opportunity to socialize can help to greatly improve your interpersonal skills. When you are learning, you are engaged in life; you are engaged in those around you. And when you share what you know, you help others learn and further enhance your relationships.

Sharpens Your Career Opportunities

For anyone who has aspirations of moving their career to the next level, lifelong learning will very much need to be part of the package. Not only can learning enhance the skills you already have, it provides you with the opportunity to learn a new skill or

trade and improve your chances of career growth. The more you know about your company, the industry, and current events, the more relevant your skills are to your organization.

Sharpens Your Ability to Communicate

When you learn, you generally employ the skills of reading, listening and writing; skills essential to your ability to communicate. Because human communication is such a large part of our daily work lives, it is a skill that most employers seek in their new hires. By enhancing these skills, you improve your ability to write a business letter, compile a marketing report, give a department presentation or even speak

one-on-one to the company president.

Learning opens up so many doors. Lifelong learning opens those doors for you everyday of your life. Why would you ever choose to close them?

Learning Foreign Languages

Languages will continue to change. Even if English is becoming the universal language, it will still take many different forms. Indeed the same could happen to English as has happened to Chinese.

We will continue to teach other languages in some form, and not just for practical reasons. Learning a language is good for your mental health; it forces you to understand another cultural and intellectual system. So I think we should develop a more rational approach to the foreign languages available to students. Because so many people believe it’s no longer important to know another language, I fear that time spent on language teaching in schools may well continue to reduce. But you can argue that learning another language well is more tiring than, say, to play chess well---- it involves sensitivity to a set of complicated grammar rules, and also to the context.

Technology will certainly make a difference to the use of foreign languages. Computers may, for instance, help us do much translation work. But no one who has seen a computer translation will think it can substitute for live knowledge of the different languages. A machine will always be behind the times. Still more important is the fact that no computer will ever get at the implications that may not be expressed, which carry much of the meaning. In languages like Arabic the context is very important. Languages carry heavy cultural baggage too----in French or German if you miss the cultural reference behind a word, you’re very likely to be missing the meaning. It will be very hard to teach all that to a computer.

Some people predict that fewer and fewer people will speak English in the 21st century. I don’t think foreign languages will really become less important and the number of people who speak it will decline, but they might be perceived to be ----and that would in the end be a very bad thing.

What is a Good Education?

Two friends----two women of European origin---were talking about education, or rather about the kind of education they had received in their youth.

“I was very pound of myself when I finished college,” says one, “I have received a classical education and I had been very happy with the system. At that time, students were not allowed to select their own courses; but even if I had been consulted, I would have chosen the subjects of the school’s program. I like hi story and literature; I was interested in languages and past civilizations, in philosophy and music; and even

in some sciences, although I was not very good in that field. I probably complained about the amount of homework; everyone did. But I enjoyed my studies and I felt that they were preparing me for life. I was very shocked, after education, when I discovered that I, a good student, couldn’t get a job. My degree would get me into a university for fur ther studies, but it couldn’t help me find a job. Because I had no useful skill that would interest an employer, I have done well for myself since then, but it was not easy to get started.”

Her friends laughed, “You don’t know how lucky you are,” she said. “I was sixteen when I left school, and I went to work right away in the accounting department of a big factory. I had received in my school all training I needed for a job, including bookkeeping, commercial arithmetic, and typing. But I had never learned anything that was not absolutely practical. I had never heard of ancient civilizations and ancient languages. I did not know anything about music, and I would not have recognized the names of the most famous painters of my own country, whom everybody else seems to know. I had never discussed or even read a book of any importance; I did not know what philosophy was. And this is why, at forty, I am going back to school. I realize that I have missed something important, something that would make my life fuller that would give me great pleasure. I am going to make up for it. I am going to get a good education at last.” Between them, the two women illustrate clearly a question that has been debated for some time, and which has not yet received an answer acceptable to all: What is a good education?

Task 8Complete the following summary

Two friends were talking about the education they ___1_____, One said that she had received classical education, she was not ___2____to select their own courses, she had to do a lot of____3___, and her degree would get her into a university for further studies, but it couldn’t ___4____her find a job, because she had no useful __5___that would interest an employer.
