My name is Amy. I’m a 25-year-old graduate student who likes yoga, home-decorating shows and eating spoonfuls of peanut butter 1 from the jar. Oh yeah, and I’m an iPhone addict.

However, about a year ago, I found myself envious of all those proud iPhone owners, cradling their shiny new phones and 5 all their friends. I started listening secretly to conversations about “iPhone apps”, feeling like a 6 listening to a language I couldn’t spe ak.

Eventually I couldn’t 7 my iPhone instinct (本能) any longer, and I welcomed my new iPhone into my life.

To my surprise, I suddenly found myself with a whole new circle of friends. They

9 when I bragged about (吹嘘) all the things little Eloise (yes, I named her) could do.

However, I realized I had a problem when one day I found myself Google-mapping my way to my mailbox, which happens to be right outside my front door.

When I 10 the past few months, I couldn’t believe I didn’t see this coming. All the 11 signs were there. Eloise slept right beside me and was the first thing I 12 in the morning. I 13 my e-mail about 20 times a day. I also experienced 14 when I left poor Eloise in the change room at the gym. 15 she beeped and needed my response?

Okay, so I was addicted to my iPhone.

I decided 16 had to be done. But, as I quickly realized, iPhones are like

17 and not easy to quit.

Then, while taking the bus to work one day, I was 18 forced to quit—at least 19 . When I reached into my purse to grab Eloise, (to refer to my e-mail for only the seventh time that morning), I found her 20 by fever. She was so hot that I dropped her immediately back into my bag. When I picked her up again, she was gone.

cultural“文化的”;commercial“经济的”;economic“经济的,节省的”;scientific“科技的”。

order“点(酒菜等)”;bring“带来”;design“设计”;fetch“去取”。

a shock“一件令人吃惊的事情”。

notice“注意”;prefer“更喜欢”;tell“辨别,区分”;appreciate“感激,欣赏”。

unless“除非”;if“如果”;when“在……时”;since“自……

like“像”。

36.答案:B therefore“因此”;so“所以”;however“然而”;but“但是”。

37.答案:A come true“实现,成真,应验”。

walk“走”;drive“开车”;wander“闲逛”;rush“匆匆忙忙”。

reflect on“认真思考,沉思”;depend on“依靠”;spy on“监视”;无watch on搭配。

40.答案:C take up the challenge“接受挑战”。

Strange Wedding Traditions around the World Flinging raw rice and breaking a glass underfoot may seem like strange ways to celebrate a marriage, at l east if you’re not used to American customs. Strange as some U.S. wedding traditions may be, they certainly cannot take the (wedding) cake for overall wedding weirdness. Those honors go to these 5 strange wedding traditions around the globe. Blackening of the Bride and Groom (Scottish) For Scotland’s tradition of blackening of the bride, which has expanded to now include the groom, absolutely anything goes. This includes tars, feathers, pillow stuffing, dirt, rotting food, sour milk, flour—you name it and you get it, you can certainly pile it on.The blackening takes place prior to the wedding, which at least spares the tux (无尾礼服) and the wedding dress, but any time or location is fair game.Once blackened, the lucky newlywed-to-be is paraded through the streets or tied to a tree as said “friends” announce the wedding.Blackening suppose dly prepares the person for any humiliation (羞耻) that life has yet to bring, as nothing could be as humiliating as being blackened. Breaking Dishes (German) Throwing plates is typically something you do after you’ve been married a few years, unless you’re from Germany. The wonderful tradition of breaking dishes actually takes place prior to the wedding at the rehearsal dinner.Tradition says the more dishes you break, the more good luck the new bride will receive. This counts double if she’s lucky enough to get a brand new set of china as a wedding gift. After this part, the bride and groom join forces to sweep up the mess, a gesture that ensures nothing will ever get broken in their home again. Keep Your Feet on the Floor (Irish) Irish legend has it that the bride must keep her feet on the floor while she’s dancing with the groom to ensure little fairies attracted by her beauty won’t kidnap her.The quick and clever fairies are always eager to get their hands on beautiful things, and legend says the bride has long been a prime target. Irish legends throughout the ages full of tales of fairies stealing brides, although it’s not clear where the brides end up and if the destination is better than where she planned to spend her honeymoon. Passing a Rolling Pin(擀面杖)(Polish) How many Polish people does it take to pass a rolling pin? It depends on how many people are at the Polish wedding! The tradition is pretty much what it sounds like,as people stand in a circle and pass a rolling pin from one person to the next, but there’s a rule—no hands are allowed, and each person must grad and then pass the pin along using only their legs. While it is not immediately evident what the tradition means or why people do it,it is evident it would be great video to capture for future generations to enjoy. No Bathroom Breaks for Three Days(Tidong tribe,Northern Borneo) Can your bladder (膀胱)really explode? Folks who follow a marriage tradition in Northern Borneo put this question to the test.Newlyweds in the Tidong tribe must stay in their home for three days—without a single bathroom break. That means no No.1, no No.2 during this three-day period. The background of this tradition is extremely unclear... as is the feeling people probably get after not relieving

1 I used to be ashamed of my grandma. 阅读理解 A [2019·青岛市质量检测] Recently whenever I turned on my computer or my mobile phone, news about the great effect of Hurricane Harvey on thousands of people caught my eye. I saw many unfortunate events. However, there were also the bright news that confirmed the goodness of mankind. As a journalist, I wrote many human-interest stories during my career. That's why the story about the guys in the bakery caught my eye. When the staff at a Mexican bakery chain in Houston were trapped inside the building for two days, they didn't sit there feeling sorry for themselves. They used their time wisely after flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. While they were waiting for the eventual rescue that came on Monday morning, four decided to make as many loaves of bread as possible for their community. The flood water rose in the street outside. They took advantage of their emergency power supply to bake bread. They used more than 4,200 pounds of flour to create hundreds of loaves and sheets of sweet bread. Although the water kept rising, they continued baking to help more people. By the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that they took the loaves to loads of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods. The store manager, Brian Alvarado, told The Independent,“ Whenever a disaster occurs, nobody should just feel forlorn. Instead,we should take positive action to save ourselves and help others. Our acts of kindness will make a big difference.” 1.What did the bakery store workers do after flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey?
