Directions: This part is to test your reading ability. There are 3 tasks for you to fulfill. Y ou should read the materials carefully and do the tasks as you are instructed.

T ask 1

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements or questions, numbered 36 through 40. For each statement there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Y ou should make the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. Y ou are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of year. A noted scientist, Edworth Huntingon (1876-1947), concluded from other men’s work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities.

He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than in summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man’s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.

Fall is the next best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.

C. varies form day to day

D. stays the same throughout the year

D. the result of research done by him and other scientists among peoples in different climates

38.It seems that the cold of winter______.

A. has nothing to do with the thinking

B. is better for thinking than in very hot weather

C. is the best time for thinking

D. decreases the ability to think

39.The two best seasons for thinking seem to be _______.

A. spring and fall

B. summer and spring

C. winter and summer

D. fall and winter

40.According to the passage, any vacations from thinking should be taken ________.

A. during spring and fall

B. during the winter

C. during the summer

D. several times throughout the year

T ask 2

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements or questions, numbered 41 through 45. For each statement there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Y ou should make the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

It is a matter of common observation that although incomes keep going up over the years, people never seem to become much better off(经济状况较好).Prices are rising continuously. This is called inflation(通货膨胀).The money supply is becoming inflated so that each unit of it becomes less valuable. People have got used in recent years to higher and higher rates of inflation. What could be bought ten years ago for one dollar now costs well over two dollars. It seems that this rate of inflation is tending to rise rather to fall. If in the real world our money incomes go up at the same rate as prices one might think that inflation does not matter. But it does. When money is losing value it lacks one of the quantities of a good money---stability(稳定)of value. It is no longer acceptable as a store of value; and it becomes an unsuitable standard of deferred (延期)payments. Nobody wants to hold a wasting possession, so people try to get rid of money as quickly as possible. Inflation therefore stimulates people spending, and prevents people from saving.

45.In a period of inflation, people are likely to _______.

A. stop spending

B. spend money and not bother to save

C. hold on to money as a dependable asset

D. invest heavily on the stock market

T ask 3

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements or questions, numbered 46 through 50. For each statement there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Y ou should make the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

When companies need new employees, they usually place advertisements in newspapers in order to attract as many applicants as possible. But many large well-known companies hire new people frequently without putting advertisements in newspaper, because they already have many resumes on file. Therefore, it is not always best to apply only to companies that place ads in newspapers. A person looking for a job is advised to send his resume with a cover letter to a well-know company even if a position is not then open. He can follow up with a telephone call to inquire if his resume has been received and if any jobs are available. If the company has not a job at that time, he can ask that they keep his material on file and contact him in the future when something is available.

Sometimes if a company is not hiring at the time, a letter explaining that a position is not currently available will be sent. If a person sends a letter and resume to a company that is not then hiring and later sees an advertisement in the newspaper for a job with that company, he should call the company to make certain they have his material on file and will consider him for the position. passage?
