四、阅读理解题。(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under

competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

41. What does this passage mainly talk about?

A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.

B. Opinions about competition are different among people.

C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

D. Failures are necessary experience in competition.

42. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?

A. It pushes society forward.

B. It builds up a sense of duty.

C. It improves personal abilities.

D. It encourages individual efforts.

43. The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means __________.

A. those who try their best to win

B. those who value competition most highly

C. those who are against competition most strongly

D. those who rely on others most for success

44. W hat is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a “desire to fail”?

A. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others.

B. One’s success in competition needs great efforts.

C. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skil ls.

D. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.

45. Which point of view may the author agree to?

A. Every effort should be paid back.

B. Competition should be encouraged.

C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

18.Most American schools have boys and girls in the same classroom. But a public high school in the small, rural town of Boonsboro, Maryland, offers a special program called the Academy. Top students in the ninth and tenth grades can attend single-sex classes for math, science, English and social studies.

The aim is to help teenagers keep their mind on their work by keeping males and females apart. What they really want to do is take that top group of kids and take them to the very highest level they can achieve there, so that they’re prepared for college.

Students are invited to enter this program after they finish middle school, and placement in the Academy is voluntary. However, they need high marks and test scores and strong teacher recommendations. They also need to be involved in activities. Almost 350 students have taken part in the Academy. It began as an experiment in 2010.

Michael Bair has been at Boonsboro High for twenty years and directs the Academy. His ninth-grade English class for boys centers on books that he believes boys find interesting. He says that the novels the students are reading now are very manly novels. These novels deal with the arrogance (傲慢) of man and the pride of man which finally leads to man’s downfal l.

One of those books, for example, is The Call of the Wild by Jack London. This classic story tells of a dog stolen from his home and sold to work as a sled dog in Canada’s Klondike Gold Rush.

Morgan Fleet, a senior at Boonsboro High, likes being in the Academy. She says boys and girls act differently when they are together in a classroom. She believes this difference seems to prevent her from developing herself because she’s more focused on thoughts like “Oh, I wish they would shut up. Oh, what do they th ink of me?’’ instead of focusing on “What’s the homework? What’s going on in this class? What’s the lesson?”

There is one activity that girls and boys in the Academy do together. At the end of the day, many of them stay and help tutor students who are having trouble in school.

46. What is the purpose of the Academy program?

A. To offer a special program in high school.

B. To help students concentrate on study.

C. To strengthen sex education for teenagers.

D. To start learning college courses earlier.

47. To enter the Academy program, students are NOT required to _________.

A. should learn more about literature

B. should have a sense of protecting the wildlife

C. are reading more manly novels

A. A girl cares about the boys’ opinions of her.

B. Single-sex classes should be stopped.

C. Girls are more focused when studying with boys.

D. Boys and girls act the same in separate classrooms.

50. The passage is intended to _________.

A. introduce the single-sex class project

B. explain the differences between boys and girls

C. persuade students to enter the Academy program

D. urge students to work hard in their study

A person’s ability to quickly react to different circumstances might better indicate h is or her chances for a longer and healthier life, than their blood pressure, weight or exercise levels, reports a new study by British researchers.

While this can be attributed, in part, to differences in lifestyles because commonly, the more intelligent people are, the less likely they tend to smoke and suffer from extreme weight, there was still much of the gap that could not be previously explained. In fact, according to the authors, people’s reaction times are a measure of their intelligence (IQ), whic h, in its turn is an indicator of “system integrity” (系统完整性) of their bodies, in other words, how well the rest of the body is wired together.

The Scottish research appears to be the first to focus on a comparison between people’s intelligence and their death. The findings were based on the study of 7,414 people nationwide for more than a twenty-year period of time.

In the experiment, the reaction times of all the study participants were measured by the means of an electrical device that was fitted with a small screen and 5 numbered buttons. The participants then were asked to press the matching buttons when they saw some number appearing on screen. The time that every volunteer had taken to react was meanwhile recorded and averages worked out.

It was found later that since the mid-80s, more than 1,200 people have died, and 568 of them from heart related conditions. The experts then compared the reaction times, smoking and

drinking habits, weight and other factors of those people who had passed away with those who had survived. The results revealed that people with slow reactions were 2.6 times more likely to die prematurely (提前) from any cause. The only factor that was somehow connected with an increased risk of death was smoking—making it over 3 times more likely.

Traditional indicators such as heart rate, waist circumference, physical activity, drinking habits, body max index (BMI) and blood pressure were found to be less accurate. There had been assumptions that reaction time, as a measure of speed of the information-processing capacity, may be a marker for the integrity of the human body, the researchers wrote. But the current study shows that slower are the reaction times, and therefore worse capability to process information—better are the chances of physiological malfunctioning (技能丧失), which may in turn be linked to a premature death.

56 What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Want to Live a Longer Life?—Watch Your Reaction

B. A Better Way to Measure One’s Intelligence

C. The Relation Between Intelligence and Lifestyle

D. Good Habits Lead to a Longer Life

57. People’s reaction times can tell us about _______.

A. their life styles

B. their intelligence

C. their body max index

D. their way of thinking

58. According to the passage, if a person has slower reaction, he _______.

A. is more likely to die prematurely from any cause

B. is more likely to die from heart related conditions

C. must have high body max index

D. is sure to have many bad habits

59. The researchers believe traditional indicators ________.

A. can only be used to tell a person’s lifespan

B. can be used to measure one’s information-processing capacity

C. are not so accurate in telling a person’s lifespan as expected

D. can only be used to tell a person’s lifestyle

60. We can infer from the passage that _________.

A. it’s hard to tell whether one can live a longer life

B. none of the traditional indicators are reliable

C. the Scottish researchers are still not sure what leads to a longer life

D. smoking is an important cause of a premature death

F. (Charlotte Bront?)

Jane Eyre ranks as one of the greatest and most perennially popular works of English fiction. Although the poor but plucky heroine is outwardly of plain appearance, she possesses an indomitable spirit, a sharp wit and great courage. She is forced to battle against the exigencies of a cruel guardian, a harsh employer and a rigid social order. All of which circumscribe her life and position when she becomes governess to the daughter of the mysterious, sardonic and attractive Mr Rochester.

However, there is great kindness and warmth in this epic love story, which is set against the magnificent backdrop of the Yorkshire moors.

Two years ago, when I was an oversea student, I worked early mornings and late nights to pay for my school fees.

One day, I was seriously ill with a very high fever. I had stayed at home for a few days, and I had run out of food. Because I had been in this town just for a short time, I also had no friends nearby who could help. So I went out to get some food. I would have gone to the supermarket, but on this occasion, I went into a small store because it was closer.

I picked up a few items. When I handed them to the shopkeeper, she said, “You are unwell.” “Yes,” I nodded.

She pointed at the salami and bread I was buying and offered, “I can make you a sandwich, so you don’t have to do it yourself’. So, she made the sandwich and asked me to wait a moment. She went in the back room and returned with a bowl of hot soup.

“It will warm you up,” she said with a genuine smile.

What really warmed me up was not the soup, but her kindness. It made me want to be as kind as the shopkeeper who had been kind to me.

A Wikipedia: The Online Know-It-All If you want to find out a piece of information about anything, the best place to search for it is Wikipedia. The name “Wikipedia” is from the Hawaiian word wiki, meaning “quick”. This online encyclopedia (百科全书) is written by thousands of people around the world. Anyone with Internet access can write, add or make changes to Wikipedia articles if he or she finds it incorrect or not well written. In this way, people who know a lot about a certain subject can write about it even if they are not university professors. But contributions cannot damage Wikipedia because many experienced editors are watching pages and techies (技术专家) can write editing programs to keep track of or correct bad edits. Where there are disagreements on how to present facts, editors work together to arrive at an article that fairly represents current expert opinion on the subject. Wikipedia is quite different from paper-based reference sources in important ways. Unlike printed encyclopedias, it is continually created and updated, with articles on historic events appearing within minutes, rather than months or years. What’s more, Wikipedia includes artic les written in about 285 languages. This fact makes it one of the few websites on the Internet that are truly international. It was started in 2001 by Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales, as a free online English-language encyclopedia project. Since its creation, it has grown rapidly into one of the largest reference websites, attracting nearly 500 million unique visitors monthly. There are more than 77,000 active contributors working on more than 22,000,000 articles in different languages. As of today, there are 4,396,866 articles in English. So, if you are looking for some information, why not try Wikipedia? It’s free, multilingual, and informative. 1. According to the passage, what is Wikipedia? A. A free website encyclopedia. B. "I promised you a gift, and here it is." What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. I told it over and over how much I loved it! One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as "hopeless", "pitiful", and "dying", which sounded ominous. Christmas was ing. "Don’t expect any presents this year." Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. "If your baby brother lives, that'll be Christmas enough." As he spoke, his eyes were filled with tears. I'd never seen him cry before. The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say. "What? He's all right?" He hung up and shouted upstairs. ―The hospital said we can bring Richard home!" "Thank God.'" I heard Mum cry. From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My sacks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty; they were filled with love! 1. What happened to the author on September 11 1958? A. He got a baby brother B. He got a Christmas gift C. He became four years old D.
