Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

The Sydney Harbor Bridge is the world’s largest steel arch bridge with the top of the bridge standing 134 meters above the harbor. It is one of Australia’s most well-known and photographed landmarks. Fondly known by the locals as the “Coat hanger,” the Sydney Harbor Bridge celebrated its 70th birthday in 2002. Its official opening was in March 1932. At that time, the average annual daily traffic was around 11,000 and now it is around 160,000 vehicles per day.

Construction of the Sydney Harbor Bridge started in 1924 and took 1,400 men eight years to build at a cost of 4.2 million. Fifty-three thousand tons of steel were used in its construction. It now carries eight traffic lanes and two rail lines, one in each direction, but at the time of its construction the two eastern lanes were tram tracks. They were converted to road traffic when Sydney closed down its tram system in the 1950s.

Bridge Climb started in 1998 and attracts tourists and locals alike to climb the monument. After climbing through catwalks and up ladders and stairs, the view is absolutely breathtaking. By all reports, Bridge Climb is fantastic and one of the “must dos” while on a trip to Sydney. Royals and celebrities, such as Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark, and American actor Matt Damon, have done the climb. Questions:

1. When did the Sydney Harbor Bridge start its construction?

2. Which of the following statements is true?

3. What happened to the two eastern lanes in the 1950s?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

When an emergency situation occurs, observers are more likely to take action if there are few or no other witnesses. This phenomenon is referred to as the bystander effect.

The bystander effect is also called the Genovese effect, which is named after Kitty Genovese, a young woman who was cruelly murdered on March 13, 1964. Early in the morning, 28-year-old Genovese was returning home from work. As she approached her apartment entrance, she was attacked and stabbed by a man. Despite Genovese’s repeated cries for help, none of the dozen or so people in the nearby apartment building who heard her cries called police for help. The attack first began at 3:20, but it was not until 3:50 that someone first contacted police. Many of the witnesses reported that they believed they were witnessing a lovers’ quarrel and didn’t realize that the young woman was being murdered.

There are two major factors that contribute to the bystander effect. First, the presence of other people means a division of responsibility. Because there are other observers, individuals do not feel as much pressure to take action, since the responsibility to take action is thought to be shared among all of those present. The second reason is the need to behave in correct and socially acceptable ways. When other observers fail to react, individuals often take this as a signal that a response is not needed or not appropriate.

Questions:

1. What did the witnesses think when Genovese cried for help?

2. Which of the following statements is true?

3. What is the topic of the passage?

17. What are the two speakers talking about?

18. What present will they probably prepare?

19. Which of the following sentences is true?

20. What will the boss do at the party?

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

Air travel is such an everyday experience these days that we are not surprised when we read about a politician having talked with the Japanese Prime Minister one day, having to attend a conference in Australia the following morning and having to be off at midday to sign a trade agreement in Bangkok. Air travel is so quick nowadays that we can leave London after breakfast and be in New York in eight hours. Yet what really disturbs us is that when we arrive it is only lunch time, but we have already had lunch on the plane and are expecting dinner.

Doctors say that since air travelers are in no condition to work after crossing a number of time zones, they should go straight to bed on arrival. By comparison, airline pilots often live by their own watches, ignoring local time, and have breakfast at midnight if necessary. They have far less reason to worry about their health than air travelers because they are used to flying and are physically fit.

For businessmen who go on long-distance flights, they are lucky if the company is enlightened enough to insist on their taking the doctor’s advice and resting for a day before working. Sometimes the managing director is such an energetic character that he expects everyone to be as fit as he is. As he has never felt any ill effects after flying himself, the schedule he lays down is so demanding that the employee is too exhausted to carry it out satisfactorily. He must either go straight to an important meeting as soon as his plane touches down or else return as soon as the meeting is over to report to his boss. Managing directors of this type often do not realize how disastrous this policy may be for the man’s health and the company’s reputation.

Questions:

11. What will pilots do after long distance flights?

12. What should businessmen traveling a long distance do?

13. What is the topic of the passage?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

As the 1920s progressed, American businesses were thriving and the economy booming. Many people were investing money in the stock market and buying shares of stock.

Between 1925 and 1929, the value of most stocks more than doubled. Investors who sold their shares when the price increased made a great deal of money. This led many greedy people to borrow money to invest in the stock market. They planned to sell their shares when the stock increased in value. However, this input of money into the market inflated stock prices beyond the worth of the stocks. On October 24, 1929, the increase in stock prices turned into a plunge. By October 29, stock prices had decreased even further, causing numerous investors to panic and sell their stocks, even though the stocks were worth less than their purchase price.

By the end of the year, investors had lost billions in the stock market crash. Banks and businesses that had lost heavily in the stock market closed. Millions of people lost their savings when the bank failed. As banks and businesses closed, the people they employed lost their jobs. The stock market crash of 1929 contributed to the decline of the American economy and the resulting Great Depression, which would last into the 1940s in the United States.

Questions:

14. What happened between 1925 and 1929?

15. What was the consequence of the closure of banks and businesses?

16. What is the main idea of the passage?

Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following longer conversation.

M: How is everything going on, Jane? You know, it is the graduation season.

W: Not bad. I submitted a job application yesterday and I am waiting for the interview.

M: What kind of job are you looking for?

W: I finally decided to be a kindergarten teacher because it suits me most, I think.

M: I think you are overqualified for the job. You can try working in a high school. You are good at composing music stuff and with your professional knowledge, you can awaken the young people’s interest in classical music.

W: I love children and I feel my life fulfilled if I can sing to them and teach them how to dance.

M: You know kids are sometimes too tiresome.

W: I am fully prepared. I used to take care of children during summer and winter holidays. My ultimate goal is to start my own kindergarten business.

M: That makes sense. What do you have in mind about your future kindergarten?

W: I want to start with basic life skills in an entertaining and relaxing environment. And I want to cultivate their inquiring mind at a very early age.

M: Sounds great. Many kindergartens are too eager to focus on teaching knowledge these days. Good luck with your interview.

W: Thanks a lot.

Questions

17. What is Jane doing now?

18. What does the man think of Jane?

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage

Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.

The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 18 years of age, nor may your friends buy it for you.

Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don’t make unnecessary noise, particularly at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.

Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use pedestrian crossings and don’t take any chances when crossing the road.

My next point is about litter. It is an offence to drop litter in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.

Finally, as regards smoking, it is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 16 years of age.

I’d like to finish by saying that if you require any sort of help or assistance, you should contact your local police station, who will be pleased to help you.

Questions:

11. What is the fourth law mentioned in the speech?

12. Who do you think is most likely to make the speech?

13. What is the main purpose of this speech?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following instructions.

More than 20 Chinese and American experts discovered that young people of both countries are facing the same problems of economic and social pressures and lack of confidence.

Under economic pressure American young people have to work hard and most students have to take part-time work in order to support themselves.

“In these circumstances,” an American expert said, “young people lack confidence, which was not the case in the 1960s when young Americans thought themselves capable of doing anything.”

In spite of the different conditions in China, the Chinese young people are also facing economic pressures and are worried about the future.

Trading has appeared in many Chinese universities as students with something to sell try to make money on campus. Moreover, college students have begun to doubt whether what they are learning in class will help them find work, as many businesses totally ignore students of pure theory.

In order to solve these problems, the Chinese and American experts agreed that youth organizations should call on the whole society to create favorable conditions for the healthy growth of young people, as well as to encourage them to meet the urgent needs of society. Questions:

14. What is the passage mainly about?

15. Which of the following can best describe the young Americans in the 1960s?

16. What conclusion can we draw according to the experts’ opinions?

Questions 17 and 18 are based on the following conversation.

M: I am so relieved I just finished the story I was working on.

W: I haven’t quite finished mine yet. I had trouble getting past the beginning.

M: How come?

(1) A Wolf in Danger What is happening to the timber wolf today? Native Americans and early settlers often went to sleep to the sound of a lonely lullaby(催眠曲). It was the song of the wolf howling in a distant forest. There were many wolves then. One kind was the North American timber wolf. Wolves are important to the balance of nature because they eat sick and weak animals. In Colorado, people tried to help deer by shooting wolves. But then there were so many deer that many of them starved to death. The timber wolf is on the endangered special list. Animals on this list are in danger of disappearing from the earth. People drove the wolves away by cutting down the forests to build houses, towns, and highways. Timber wolves are now found only in Canada, Alaska, Michigan, and Minnesota. Even a small increase in light activity such as washing dishes, or walking around the house might help prevent an early death among older adults, researchers say. "It is important for elderly people, who might not be able to do much moderate intensity(强度)activity, that just moving around and doing light intensity activity will have strong effects and is beneficial," said Ulf Ekelund, who led the research. Published in the BMJ, the latest research was based on a review of eight studies involving a total of more than 36,000 people with an average age of almost 63 years. Participants were followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths were recorded. All of the studies involved monitoring the physical activity of individuals who had activity trackers, and the studies did not rely on self-reporting, which, the experts noted, could be unreliable. For each study participants were split into four equal-sized groups, based on the total amount of time spent actively, and the risk of death assessed, taking into account factors such as age, sex, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. This was then repeated for an amount of activity at different levels of intensity. The results were analyzed together to give an overview. The team found a greater amount of activity was linked to a lower risk of death. The results held for different intensities of activity. The team said the study supported the message "sit less and move more and more often". However, the study had limitations. It only looked at the situation for middle age and older adults, most of whom lived in the US or Europe, and some of the effect could be due to those people with a higher risk of death being less likely to be related to physical activity. Physical activity levels also were only measured over one period of time. Dr Gavin Sandercock, from the University of Essex, said the results suggested moving more brought bigger benefits than simply reducing the time of sitting, another factor measured in the study. "This study reinforces the important message that getting the least active people to do even just a little bit more physical activity can have important public health benefits," he said. (1)Which of the following may Ulf Ekelund suggest elderly people do? A.lying on the sofa reading. B.Doing a little gentle gardening. C.Going out to hike with friends. D.Playing basketball sometimes. (2)What can we know about the research? A.It lasted about 8 years. B.The researchers admitted they used fake data. C.The participants didn't include younger people. D.Some participants died because of doing too much physical activity (3)What is the author's attitude towards the researchers' conclusion? A.Doubtful

You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you. Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转) door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person. 21.When you do something wrong, _______________. A. you may correct it

高中英语阅读理解练习1(共2篇) A Every American family has its own traditions on Thanksgiving Day, and mine is not different. Once the national holiday arrives, my mom rises early to make the meal. She puts a turkey in the oven, chops carrots and bakes pies. I'm sorry to say that the men in the family — my dad, my younger brother and myself — rarely pitch in to help. Our job is to wash the mountain of dirty dishes after the meal is over. Around 2 pm every Thanksgiving Day, family members seat themselves around the kitchen table. Plates of turkey, vegetables, salad, rolls and pies cover it. At this point, we can hardly keep ourselves from drooling (流口水) all over our fancy clothes, but it's not yet time to eat. First, we must bow our heads, close our eyes and say a prayer of thanks aloud to God for giving us everything we have. Under normal circumstances, I would have no problem making a list of things I am thankful for. I grew up in a loving family. My parents, who aren't wealthy, took out loans to help me pay for university. But, the funny thing is, every time I sit down for Thanksgiving dinner and try to say a prayer of thanks, my mind usually goes blank. I think it has something to do with my growling (咕咕叫) stomach and all of that food sitting right there under my nose. Eventually, though, we all finish our short prayers and dig_in. To be sure, the day includes other highlights — visiting with family and watching football. But usually around 6 pm we are all ourselves stuffed like turkeys and thankful to have a nice warm bed to sleep in. 1.The purpose of the text is to__________. A.tell what the family do for Thanksgiving Day B.tell how the family spends Thanksgiving Day C.introduce foods served on Thanksgiving Day D.introduce the American Thanksgiving Day 解析:主旨大意题。 B 2.On Thanksgiving Day the author's family do the following except__________. A.watching a movie B.making visits C.having a big meal D.watching football Eventually, though, we all finish our short prayers and dig_in.
