1. Marketing research proposal

1.1 Introduction

This world is a mixture of culture s, and it’s necessary to improve the understanding between people from the different parts on earth. On campus in China, proficiency in English has become one of the important standards be used to evaluate a person's ability. Before students go to college, English is a required course. English is also a required course for university students. In our school, it can be seen that many students study English everyday and everywhere, but according to an investigating, a large number of them are not good at English, and the pass rate of CET is extremely low. Talking with them, you can find that different people hold different opinions on English learning. Some of them learn English frequently, but the result of study is not satisfied; other students, who learn English not very often, can get a good command of it. In addition, this research would also indicate the result of why some students do not want to learn English, but they still learn it.

1.2 Research objectives

To understand the situation of English study in the school

To realize views of college students study English

To identify the purpose for students learning English

To determine the most important factors for the college teachers To find a way to improve the situation of English study and

enhance the students’ English ability all round.

1)Questionnaire:

To target the objective groups, we released 100 questionnaires then returned valid questionnaires , used this data to analysis the phenomenon and got the information we need.

2)Observation and Interviews:

We used polite and proper behavior to ask the relative question , and then added the result to the report.

2.The analysis of research results

2.1 General information of the research

In this research, we have researched the current situation about college student’English studying. Our respondents are all the students in our college. The quantity of the respondents is 200. And all the questionnaires are effective.

2.2 The result analysis of the questionnaire

2.2.1 The purpose of learning English in college

According to the chart one, 62% of the respondents held the view that passing the exams (CET) and getting certificates are the purpose of learning English. For example, once students have passed the CET4 or 6, they may feel that they have finished the assignments and they stop learning it. 16% of them would like to communicate with foreigners with English. 15% of them want to learn English because they want to find a good job. And 5% of them have some other opinions of learning English. Only 2% of the respondents learn English for the purpose of study abroad.

Overall, most college students not only want to get the certificates simply, but also understand the importance of learning English to themselves.

2.2.2 The most weakness of language skills in English study

As we can see from the chart two below, we can easily get that 40% of the respondents believe that listening and speaking are the most weakness of language skills in learning English. In fact, the two points are difficult for many college students indeed. 21% of them view that reading and writing are the most weakness parts and 27% of them think that vocabulary is the most weakness part due to practices are not enough and our students sometimes are lazy. Only 9% of them believe that the most weakness point is grammar. And 3% of them have some other comments.

2.2.3 The time of spending on practicing English after class everyday From the chart three below. We can see that 63% of the respondents spend less than 1 hour practicing English after classroom everyday. It is said that most of the college students don’t spend much time on English after class. And 21% of them have about 1-2 hours on practicing English after class everyday. There is 9% of them have 3-4 hours on English after class. Beyond 2% of them are not sure about the time, only 5% of them spend 4 hours on practicing English after class everyday.

2.2.4 The good opportunity to practice oral English

From the chart four, we can see that 52% of the respondents practice their oral-English by watching English movies. About 20% of them take part in English training courses to practice their oral-English. 13% of them prefer to take part in English corner with foreigners to practice oral-English and 17% of them would like to listening and reading books to practice oral-English. Only 3% of them have other opinions.

As we can see from the chart five that most of the college students hold the view that foreign teachers have improved their English communication skills a little and the percentage of it is 60. Only 8% of them held view of neutral. 18% of them believe that the foreign teachers have improved their English communication skills greatly. And 14% of them held the opposite opinion that the foreign teachers haven ’t improved their English communication skills at all.

2.2.6 The most important factors for the college teachers

As we can see in the chart six, only 7% of the respondents view that native English speaking and good humor are the most important factors for college teachers, which students could enjoy atmosphere of the classroom and improve their oral English. 3. Conclusion

In closing, the importance of English studying of college students is self-evident. In the course of this investigation, teamwork spirit play an important role in research, through the teamwork of our group, we have gotten the current situation of the college student English studying. Meanwhile, we have learnt which aspects our college students are not good at and should pay attention to, which will be helpful for learning English of college students. as college students we should make the best use of resources around us and try our best to learn English well, so that we may get the opportunities, such as communicating with foreigners, studying abroad or having a good job.

4. Suggestions of English study

4.1 Setting up objectives of learning English

As is well known, different objectives of learning English can lead to different results. Generally, the college students who have long-term objectives will try harder in learning English than those who only have short-term objectives. And without the pressure outside or after a period of time those short-term English learning makers will not persist.

4.2 Building confidence in learning English

If students want to succeed, they should build confidence. It is same to learn English. Consequently, they should speak without fear. Usually, the biggest problem most people faced in learning English is their own fear. They worry that they won’t s peak things correctly or that they will look stupid so they don’t talk at all. Don’t do this. The fastest way to learn anything is to do it – again and again until you get it right. Like anything, learning English requires practice. Don’t let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.

4.3 Surrounding yourself with English

4.3.1 Listening to native speaking as much as possible

There are some good English teachers that have to learn English as a second language before they could teach it. However, there are several reasons why many of the best schools prefer to hire native English speakers. One of the reasons is that native speakers have a natural flow to their speech that students of English should imitate. The closer the college students can get to this rhythm or flow, the more confident and comfortable they will become.

4.3.2 Watching English Films and Television

This is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very effective. By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) students can expand your vocabulary and hear the flow of speech from the actors. If students listen to the news, they can also hear different accents. Certainly, if students recite some useful either words or sentences in the films, they will to some extend improve you English.

4.3.3 Listening to English Music

Music can be a very effective method of learning English. In fact, it is often used as a way of improving comprehension. The best way to learn English is to get the lyrics (words) to the songs you are listening to and try to read them as the artist sings. There are several good internet sites where one can find the words for most songs. This way students can practice their listening and reading at the same time.

4.3.4 Teachers should educate the college students correctly Teachers in college should shoulder the responsibility of educating their students. Good teachers know all through those years of English study, students are forced to do better in reading and writing. Nobody really cares what you listen to or what you say. Now we're asked to listen more and speak more so that we may express ourselves in a more accurate and profound way. Therefore these teachers are doing their best to draw the attention of their students to how to make a better presentation step by step.
