At Blossom End Railroad Station, 22-year-old Stanley Vine sat, waiting for his new employer. The surrounding green fields were so unlike the muddy landscape of war-torn France. After four horrible years as an army private fighting in Europe, Stanley had returned to England in February 1946.Armed now with some savings and with no prospects for a job in England, he answered a newspaper ad for farm help in Canada. Two months later he was on his way.

When the old car rumbled toward the tiny station, Stanley rose to his feet, trying to make the most of his five foot, four inch frame. The farmer, Alphonse Lapine, shook his head and complained, “You’re a skinny thing.” On the way to his dairy farm, Alphonse explained that he had a wife and seven kids.“Money’s tight. You’ll get room and board. You’ll get up at dawn for milking, and then help me around the farm until evening milking time again.Ten dollars a week.Sundays off.” Stanley nodded. He had never been on a farm before, but he took the job.

From the beginning Stanley was treated horribly by the whole family. They made fun of the way he dressed and talked. He could do nothing right. The humourless farmer frequently lost his temper, criticizing Stanley for the slightest mistake. The oldest son, 13-year-old Armand, constantly played nasty tricks on him.But the kind-hearted Stanley never responded.

Stanley never became part of the Lapine family. After work, they ignored him.He spent his nights alone in a tiny bedroom. However, each evening before retiring, he lovingly cared for the farmer’s horses, eagerly awaiting them at the field gate.He called them his gentle giants. On Saturday nights he hitch-hiked into the nearest town and wandered the streets or enjoyed a restaurant meal before returning to the farm.Early one November morning Alphonse Lapine discovered that Stanley had disappeared, after only six months as his farmhand. The railway station master, when questioned later that week, said he had not seen him.In fact no one in the community ever heard of him again. That is, until one evening, almost 20 years later, when Armand, opened an American sports magazine and came across a shocking headline, “Millio naire jockey(赛马骑师), Stanley Vine, ex-British soldier and 5-time horse riding champion, began life in North America as a farmhand in Canada.”

In what may be the m ost terrified shower news since Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” a study says shower heads can hide tiny bacteria that come spraying into your face when you wash.People with normal immune systems have little to fear, but these bacteria could be a concern for those with AIDS, people who are undergoing cancer treatment or those who have had a recent organ transplant.

Researchers at the University of Colorado tested 45 showers in five states as part of a larger study of the microbiology of air and water in homes, schools and public buildings. They report their showers findings in Tuesday’s edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In general, is it dangerous to take showers? “Probably not, if your immune system is not compromised in some way,” le ad author Norman R.Pace says.“But it’s like anything else---there is a risk associated with it.”

The researchers offer suggestions for caution, such as getting all-mental shower heads, which microbes have a harder time clinging to.

Still, it is hard to clean the shower heads, the researchers note, and the bacteria come back even after cleaning.People who have filtered(过滤的)shower heads could replace the filter weekly, added co-author Laura K.Baumgartner.And, she said, baths don’t splash bacteria into the air as much as showers.Indeed, studies by the National Jewish Hospital in Denver suggest increases in infections in the lungs in the Untied States in recent decades from species like M.

Symptoms of infection can include tiredness, a persistent, dry cough, shortness of breath, weakness and “generally feeling bad,” he said.

Shower heads were sampled at houses, apartment buildings and public places in New York, Illinois, Colorado, Tennessee and North Dakota.

The researchers sampled water flowing from the shower heads, then removed them, wiped the interiors of the devices and separately sampled water flowing from the pipes without the shower heads.By studying the DNA of the samples they were able to determine which bacteria were present.66.Which group of persons of the following don’t have to fear the bacteria in the shower head?

A.Those who suffer from AIDS

B.Those with normal immune system

C.Those undergoing cancer treatment

D.Those that have had organ transplanted recently

67.In Para 3, what does Norman R.Pace suggest?

A.People with abnormal immune system will die from taking showers.

B.People shouldn’t take shower for there is always a risk there.

C.Bacteria in shower heads may harm those with abnormal immune system

D.Abnormal immune system is associated with taking showers.

68.What does the underlined word “cling to” mean in Para.4?

A.Holding onto tightly B.Spreading widely

C.Breaking out D.Cleaning up

69.What suggestions do NOT the researchers offer for caution?

A.Using all-metal shower heads.B.Replacing the filter weekly.

C.Stopping splashing microbes D.Taking baths instead of showers

NEW YORK(Reuters)—The Internet and advances in technology are transforming fashion, making it easier for designers to create collections and less expensive for them to show and sell their work, experts say.

Instead of spending tens of thousands of dollars on a runway(T形台)show at New York Fashion Week, some designers presented collections for spring and summer 2010 online, while others are expanding the reach of their brand by making it easier for shoppers to buy their clothes online.

Designer Norma Kamali and Polo Ralph Lauren Corp both have applications for Apple Inc's iPhone that allows shoppers to buy clothes from their phone."This is the technology that's changing our lives," said Kamali, who displayed her spring and summer 2010 collection as well as exclusive lines (专卖品)for eBay Inc and Walmart.com at the Apple store in Manhattan's Soho neighborhood.

Kamali's iPhone application has a "Try Before You Buy" option, which allows clothes to be sent overnight to a customer, who provides her credit card information, so she can try them on at home before deciding to buy.

Menswear designer Miguel Antoinne and womenswear designer Marc Bouwer both put on virtual fashion shows, while models at fashion designer Vivienne Tam's show carried a laptop computer adorned (装饰)with a Tam design.

Mazdack Rassi, co-founder and creative director of Milk Studios, a downtown space that showed about

70 collections during New York Fashion Week, and was considering projecting shows on the side of a building so people at nearby park could watch.

With cable TV and the Internet, designers know that their shows can be seen by many more people than just the editors and media who attend.

Designers are finding that technology can also help the actual design work by allowing artists to explore new ideas and processes.

But Simon Collins, the dean of fashion at Parsons----the new school for design, said even though technology is helpful, there is still no substitute for talent and hard work."Absolutely, there'll be people out there that have successful businesses that don't know the first thing about draping(剪裁)and construction, just think it up, put it on the computer, fire it off the factory and it works," Collins said."But they're the exception, not the rule."

71.According to the passage, one advantage of the Internet is that it allows the designers to_________.A.share their collections with other designers

B.receive information about the popular fashion trend

C.display their work at a lower cost

D.inform the editors and media of their collections

72.Which of the following is TRUE about Kamali?

A.She's against buying clothes online.

B.She's aware of the importance of the Internet.

C.She thinks New York Fashion Week will attract fewer and fewer people.

D.She's considering holding a show on the side of a building.

73.We can infer from the passage that ____________.

A.designers are finding various ways to make their shows known to the public

B.it's dangerous to do online shopping

C.few people pay attention to virtual fashion shows

D.it's difficult to become a well-known designer

74.According to the last paragraph, we know that Collins ____________.

A.is a successful businessman

B.does not agree that technology is helpful in designing works

C.does not understand the fashion of actual design work

D.pays more attention to people's natural gift and hard work

75.The purpose of the writing is to ____________.

A.stress the role of technology in fashion

B.celebrate the success of New York Fashion Week

C.introduce the activities in New York Fashion Week

D.advertise New York Fashion Week

[4]Sounds extreme, but we've all witnessed the evidence:The person at a restaurant who talks on the phone through an entire meal, ignoring his kids around the table;the woman who talks on the phone in the car, ignoring her husband;the teen who texts messages all the way home from school, avoiding contact with kids all around him.

[5]Jim Williams,an industrial sociologist based in Massachusetts, notes that cell-phone addiction is part of a set of symptoms in a widening gulf of personal separation. He points to a study by Duke University researchers that found one-quarter of Americans say they have no one to discuss their most important personal business with.Despite the growing use of phones,e-mail and instant messaging,in other words,Williams says studies show that we don’t have as many friends as our parents.”Just as mo re information has led to less wisdom, more acquaintances via the Internet and cell phones have produced fewer friends,”he says.

In the picture,we can see clearly that a boy sitting on the chair is saying to himself, “Tomorrow I will begin my magnificent plan.” It’s obvious that the drawer of this picture wishes to remind us of such people who have fantastic dreams ,but when it comes to the actual beginning, they find every excuse to put it off. From my point of view, two reasons can account for this phenomenon. On the one hand, such people are quite lazy-- dreaming dreams takes little effort, while beginning a grand plan needs determination. On the other hand, the beginning part is often the most difficult part.Scared of difficulty, it’s hard for them to carry out their plan in practice.

Personally,as Senior 3 students,we can’t afford to waste any time, so the earlier we plan our time and get down to work, the better results we will get. What’s more, only when we do everything as planned ,with strong intention as well as great determination, will we be able to achieve success.

A Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband, Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children.

During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport. He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one. Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the footpath. My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them

由题干中的“February”可将答案锁定在“February 6th”的话题“An Update on the Costwold Canals”中。 再结合“I was planning to have dinner that very night.” 由“…with an exhibition bring together over 200 paintings, sculptures, drawings and more.” 29. A。 根据第一段“…the visitors will find the best pieces, most importantly the Persistence of Memory”可知,该作品在Dali的最佳作品中是最重要的,由此可以推断它是Dali的杰作之一。 30. D。 根据第二段末句中的“…follo ws a path of time and subject.” 31. A。 33. A。 由第二段“Over the years, Parisian cafes have fallen victim to changes in the French lifestyle…”

2015年高考全国卷2英语试题及答案(word精校版) 含详细解析 第Ⅰ卷 第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分)略 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) A My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the sit is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble. 21. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set? A.He got an older model than he had expected. B.He couldn’t return it when it was broken. C.He could have bought it at a lower price. D.He failed to find any movie shows on it. 22. Which of the following an best replace the phrase “signed off” in paragraph 1? A.ended all their programs
