There are many different ways of seeing a town for the first time. One of them is to walk around it with a guidebook in hand. Of course, we may 35 with our guide-books the history and special developments of a town and get to know them. 36 then, if we take our time and stay in a town for a while, we may get to know

it better. When we look at it as a whole, we begin to have some 37 , which even the best guide-books do not answer. Why is the town just 38 this, this shape(形状), this plan, this size? Why do its streets 39 in this particular way, and not in any other way?

Here even the best guide-book fails us. One can’t find in it the information about how a town has developed to the 40 appearance. It may not describe the original (最初的) design of a town. However, one may get some ideas of what it 41 to look like by walking around the town. One can also imagine 42 the town

was first planned and built. Then one can learn more about in what direction the town 43 to develop.

What is the point of studying towns in this way? For me, it is simply that one gets greater pleasure by visiting

and seeing a town with one’s own eyes. A personal visit to a town may help one better understand why it is attractive 44 just reading about it in a guidebook.

A

Have successful p eople ever felt sad? Do they have any “secrets”to success? T he answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama’s “back to school” speech. Here is an excerpt(摘录) from his speech.

I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard wor k—that your ticket to success is through pop music or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.

But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem rather important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.

That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures (the opposite of success). JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots (投篮) during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures beat(打败) you—you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.

No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking

for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to tell when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.

泄气), and you feel other people

(奋斗), even when you’re discouraged (

And even when you’re struggling

have given up on yo u—don’t ever give up on yourself. B ecause when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.

45.Why does Barack Obama mention (提到) JK Rowling and Michael Jordan in the third paragraph?

A. To compare these two famous persons.

B. To explain that the more failures he has, the more successful he is.

C. If you want to be successful, you should fail first.

D. To show that failure is the mother of success.

46. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. No one can be successful without working hard.

B. Failure can be good if you treat it in a right way.

C. Those who believe in themselves shouldn’t ask others

for help.

D. One should try his best to make his dream come true.

47. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined sentence?

A. One shouldn’t ask questions because it is a sign of strength.

B. One should believe in himself though he will face much difficulty.

C. One doesn’t have to work hard when he has failed several times.

ask for help because it is a sign of weakness.

For hundreds of years, scientists have been trying to answer what things can influence people’s feelings. How you feel is controlled by many things. Your feelings can be affected by your personality, by the actions of others

and by events around you. Perhaps you don’t know your feelings can be influenced by the weather as well.

People often say they feel good when the sun is shining and sad when it is cloudy. In fact, sunlight makes us

feel good. When sunlight hits our skins, our bodies produce a vitamin. Vitamins are natural chemicals (化学物质) which we all need to stay healthy. Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D. Vitamin D helps our bodies make a special chemical. This special chemical affects our brains (大脑) and makes us feel happy. For example, there are long, dark winters of little sunlight in Sweden and Norway, so many people in these countries often feel sad. Without much sunlight, their bodies produce less vitamin D. Without enough vitamin D, their bodies make less of

this special chemical which makes them feel good. To help the people in these countries feel better, special

for an hour or “sunrooms”

with artificial (人造的) lights have been built. People can go there and get “sunlight”

two!

The weather can also affect people’s feelings in other ways. Hot weather can make people angry because people feel uncomfortable when they are hot. In the same way, rain can make people angry because being wet can

be unpleasant. As you can see, the weather can have an effect on the chemicals which control our brains. Through these ways, the weather can influence our feelings. Sadly, while the weather can change us, we can hardly change the weather.

48. Which of the following is true about vitamin D according to the passage?

A. It is a kind of artificial chemical.

B. It makes us worried by affecting our brains.

C. It is needed by us all to keep fit.

D. It is in the sunlight.

49. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?

A. We feel good when we are in the bright cool weather.

B. We will be happy when we are caught in the rain.

C. All people in Norway and Sweden feel sad in winter.

D. The more vi tamin D you have, the happier you’ll be.

50. What may be the best title for this passage?

A. Why Do We Feel Sad?

B. The Weather Influences People’s Feelings

C. People Need More Vitamin D

D. We Can Hardly Change the Weather

C

What do you do if you’re in trouble on a lonely island? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to draw the attention of a passing plane.

Body signals

Pilots (people who drive planes) in different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training. When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means “yes”. When you point downwards and swing (摆动)your arm from side to side, it means “no”. If you want the pilot to know that it’s safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend (弯曲) your knees. If you want to say that it’s not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.

Smoke signals

The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away, so it’s a good way to draw attention. If the weather is dry, it isn’t hard to start a fire. Remember, however, that fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Make sure

if you light(点燃) a fire, it can’t be spread(扩散).If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.

Ground-to-air signals

find any It’s a good idea to build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols. If you can’twood, use earth. Some useful symbols are:

F: “I need food and water.”

Ⅱ: “I need medicine.”

I: “I am badly hurt.”

X: “I am unable to move from here.”

Pilots’ replies

If the pilot lowers the plane’s wings from side to side, this means “message received and understood”.(At night, the pilot makes plane’s lights green) .If the pilot flies the plane in a clockwise circle, he means “message received but not understood”.(At night, the pilot makes the plane’s lights red .)

However, there is no signal which means “message not received”. Why not?

51. Which picture means “it’s not safe to land ?”

52. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Swinging your arm from side to side means “yes”.

B. If the ground is dark, light smoke can’t be seen.

C. If you need some medicine, make a symbol “II”.

D. The pilots make replies a blue light at night.

53. What is the passage mainly about?

A. The explanation of building signals on a lonely island.

B. The importance of making signals on a lonely island.

C. Ways of sending out signals on a lonely island.

D. Ways of receiving signals from a lonely island.

D

My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we usd 2 go 2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & 3 :-@kids FTF.ILNY, its gr8.

Can you understand this sentence? If you can’t, don’t feel too bad: because the middle school teacher in England can’t understand it, either. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on the Internet or mobile phones. To newcomers, it can look like a foreign language. So, what is the meaning of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York, it’s great.

Teachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming the English language. A number of spelling and grammar mistakes can be seen in students’ writing. They think the language could become corrupted(面目全非的).

Everyone should just relax, say the linguists(语言学家).They believe Netspeak is in fact a good thing. David Crystal, a famous linguist, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nunberg, another famous linguist, agrees. “People get better at writing by writing,” he says. “ If children often use text messages and write e-mails, they will write at least as well as, and possibly better than, their parents.”

Another linguist James Milroy says, for centuries, it is believed that young people are harming the language.

And you can bet(打赌) your bottom dollar that when today’s teenagers become tomorrow’s parents, they too will think this way. Milroy argues that language do not and cannot become “corrupted” , they simply change to meet the new needs.

However, Netspeak agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write correct English. Cynthia McVey says, “I can understand Netspeak worries teachers but that learning to write correct English is necessary for their future.

Perhaps we should give teenagers a little more trust(信任) anyway. Erin, aged 12, says, ”I wouldn’t use text language in my homework. Texting is just for fun.”

54. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?.

A. To give an example of a foreign language.

B. To show an example of creative ways.

C. To show worries about using Netspeak.

D. To lead in the topic of Netspeak.

55. Which of the following is True according to the passage?

A. Cynthia McVey insists teenagers can deal with Netspeak correctly.

B. Geoffrey Nunberg believes Netspeakers can write correct English.

C. David Crystal thinks Netspeak helps develop the habit of writing.

D. James Milroy says that language is corrupted.

56. The expression “bet your bottom dollar” in Paragraph 5 means______________.

A. be quite sure

B. be surprised

C. think it pity

D. find it interesting

57. What can be the best title for the article?

A. Netspeak: A widely-Used Language on Internet.

B. Is Netspeak Harming the English?

C. Is Netspeak Helpful in Language Learning?

D. Netspeak: Advantages and Disadvantages.
