S1: The pagan and Christian elements of Beowulf?
⑴Christian Elements: ①salvation from hero: Christians believe God can save human beings from disasters and pain and in the poem Beowulf, the strong and powerful hero Beowulf saved his people from the monsters. The holy power defeated the evil (it refers to the monsters in the poem). In Christian view, the triumph indicates the story that Jesus defeated Satan. ②The view of foreordination: Christians hold the view that at the end of life people cannot avoid defeat tragic fate, no matter how powerful he was. Death and destruction are unavoidable. Faced with the foreordination, Beowulf chose to sacrifice for his people, which is valuable.
⑵Pagan Elements: ①The description of Tribal society: Beowulf draws a picture of how people lived in a tribal society. We can learn about lots of traditions and customs from it. In addition, its theme is another important pagan element: the praise of human’s power and the victory of human defeating the nature. ②Dragons: European think dragons are dangerous and evil, so they dislike dragons, especially for Christians. ③The magical dragon splitting fire: Christians think only God is able to own magical power, so the magical dragon can be regarded as a blasphemy. Moreover, the fire can be associated with the history that wizards were burnt in the Dark Age.
