The Third Kind of Love

Mrs Morel married a man who is addicted to alcohol ,so she shifted love from her husband to her son .The love that Mrs Morel had given is abnormal, far beyond sons and mothers. .So when Paul fell in love with a girl, he felt so confused to his love with Miriam .It had happened without either of them planning it ,but without trying, they had become the closest friend in each others lives .When Paul had finished a work ,he liked nothing more than to show it to Miriam .From what she said about his paintings ,she learned something about himself. She helped him to see what he is .Paul wanted a love that went beyond the normal of love .He wanted passion and an artistic love.

But Mrs Morel was unhappy to see that her son fell in love with others because she thought her son would never be hers anymore. Pau was afraid of loving Miriam. At first Paul hated Miriam for having taken away his joy. He knew that Miriam did not want to it, but she had. When he had been with Miriam ,he felt trapped inside himself .Finally he told Miriam he could not be her man ,as he would always fail her .They were at the mind ,but life was so much more than that .

At the beginning, Mrs.Morel couldn't choose her lover in a right way. She and Morel only have a favorable impression on each other but that wasn't mentally understanding and incorporation so it led to tragedies . Her neglect and cold led to her husband drinking and degenerating. After had children, she hoped she could find the spiritual pursuit that she couldn't find on his husband. Every words and acts of her not only widen the distance between her and her husband but also affect her children who combined with their mother and dealt with their father. So the influence of Mrs.Morel didn't bring benefits to her family.Meanwhile she had profoundly affected Paul. The love of Mrs.Morel led Paul to more depend on her

and caused Paul couldn't have a right choice between Clara and Miriam. Therefore producing the third kind of love.

Paul, who is believed as the incarnation of Lawrence himself, gradually feels his debt to his mother. He has strong and intense emotion to care her and love her forever. He would feel bitter to see his mother become older ,or weep for the life. Freud believed that the relationship between the mother and child is the most perfect relationship in the world . If William not dead, if Arthur is more reasonable, if Paul itself a bit less sense of responsibility, or even... If the mother is a happy family, if a father more gentle temper ,maybe the story would have an happy ending. Maybe every mother naturally dislike his daughter-in-law and is afraid of his own son stolen,.Women are selfish,Mrs.Morel lost her husband's love, she hope to get from the son, the feeling in anyway destroy the three people's love.Until Mrs.Morel had died Paul has got rid of the shackles of her and left his hometown and lovers. It was the third kind of love that led to he tragedy,

翻译练笔Hello, Young Lovers

- 1 - The old gentleman had a romantic secret that he longed to share. “Hello, Y oung Lovers ” PhilipHarsham He appeared almost Lilliputian, dwarfed by the big hickory rocking chair he occupied on the porch of the old Riverside Hotel in Gatlinburg, Tenn. But we could hardly help noticing him on that warm mid-April day: while others lounged about in Casual attire, he wore a dark-blue pin-stripe suit, a Harvard-crimson necktie and a straw boater. The gold watch chain draped across his tightly buttoned vest glinted in the sunlight as he rocked ever so deliberately. He watched bemusedly as I stepped from the Jaguar XK-150, my pride and joy, and walked to the opposite side to open the door for my bride. His eyes followed as we trailed self-consciously behind the luggage-laden bellboy, and he smiled a knowing smile when we neared his rocker. “Hello, young lovers,” he said. Our honey mooner status was unmistakable. The man we came to know as Mr. B was in the dining room, sitting alone with a cup of tea, when we entered late the next morning. His eyes came to life when he saw us. He rose with some effort and beckoned us toward him. “Y ou’d make an old man very happy if you joined me,”he said with an octogenarian’s formality. I wonder even now why we did. Perhaps it was the angelic expression his face assumed. More likely, it was our honeymooner self-consciousness; we'd been found out by an elder and felt compelled to comply with his wishes. He was a Canadian, an attorney, he said, still practicing in Winnipeg. But he’d been spending Aprils in Gatlinburg for almost 50 years. He and his wife would come with their son and daughter and explore the mountains on horseback, getting to know every scenic vantage point of Mount Le Conte, every turn in the tumbling Little Pigeon River. After the son had died and after the daughter was grown, Mr. B and his wife had kept up their visits. And he still continued to make the annual trek even though his wife had died three years ago. The mountains and the valley were touchstones for him, sites of pleasant memories that were revived with each visit. “I’ve had a love of my own,” he said, his eyes misting. He asked detailed questions about our wedding and told us in detail of his own, some 60 years earlier. During brief periods when a conversational lapse threatened, he softly hummed “Hello,Y oung Lovers,”the song from The King and I. That night he sat alone during dinner, careful, he later told us, not to “get in love ’s way.” But he glanced often in our direction, and we knew he was not alone; he was deep in reverie, dining with his own true love. Returning to our room following an after-dinner walk, we found a ribbon-bedecked bottle of champagne. An accompanying card read: “See Mr. B in the a.m. for instructions as to its use.” He was waiting for us in his rocking chair after breakfast, the look of a leprechaun on his face. He handed me a piece of paper on which he had sketched the river, a place where we could leave our car,a footpath and points at which large boulders made it possible to cross the cold mountain stream on foot. His shaky-handed path led eventually to a river pool indicated with an X. “The champagne is to be chilled in the pool,” he said. “Y ou are to spread your picnic lunch on the grassy knoll to the right of it. It’s very secluded. A very romantic spot.”We could only gape at him, certain he was spoofing. “Y our picnic basket will be delivered to you here on the veranda at precisely noon.” He was on his feet then, moving away. He turned and added: “It was our favorite spot, our secret place.”We never saw Mr. B again during our honeymoon. We wondered whether he’d fallen ill. But inquiries to the hotel staff were answered with, “Oh,he ’s around, ” or “He often likes to be alone. ” Our first born was almost three when we next visited Gatlinburg, and my wife was six months pregnant with our second son. We approached the aging hotel not in the Jaguar, but in a practical sedan. Our arrival went unnoticed. But when we walked into the hotel lobby the next morning, our son toddling ahead, the old man was sitting in an overstuffed lounge chair. Seeing the child, he stretched out his arms, and our son, as if drawn by a magnet, ran into them. “Mr.B! ”we exclaimed in unison. He smiled that beatific smile. “Hello, young lovers,” he said.

The Interpretation of the flowers in Sons and Lovers Abstract Sons and Lovers, written by DH Lawrence, is an earlier works that reflects both penetrating social problem and psychological problem. The theme of the novel is Paul Morel's relationship with his mother and her influence upon his development. This paper will talk about the symbol meanings of the flowers. In this novel, different flowers symbolize the three main different women, and reveal their human qualities, such as white lily symbolizes the pure mother's love; white roses and narcissi imply Miriam's pure spirit, whereas Miriam's intimacy to the flowers indicates that her tendency of possessing objects including Paul's soul; The crimson flowers refer to the passion of Clara. Here, the paper studies the relationship between flowers and main characters, showing that analyzing the meaning of the flowers is important to help us have a better understanding of the theme in the novel. Key words: flowers, relationship, character Introduction Lawrence's novels are always full of vivid descriptions of natural environment to show that human beings need to live in a healthy and natural world. Also the natural objects such as trees, flowers, the moon and evenings imply symbolic meanings to make the novel significant. To understand the novel better, this paper tries to use a Semiotics approach to interpret the main symbols, so as to reveal the theme of the novel. In Classics of Semiotics edited by Martin Krampen, Semiotics is thus defined: As a science of sign processes, semiotics investigates all types of communication and information exchange among human beings, animals, plants, internal systems of organisms. Thus it encompasses most of the subject areas of the arts and the social science, as well as those of biology and medicine. According to this theory, there should be some certain connections between the different flower symbols and the

This growing series is rigorously updated, with scholarly introductions and notes added to new titles. This semi-autobiographical novel explores the emotional conflicts through the protagonist, Pa ul Morel, and the suffocating relationships with a demanding mother and two very different lovers. It is a Freudian exploration of love and possessiveness. https://www.sodocs.net/doc/7d9846142.html, Sons and Lovers was the first modern portrayal of a phenomenon that later, thanks to Freu d, became easily recognizable as the Oedipus complex. Never was a son more indentured to his mother's love and full of hatred for his father than Paul Morel, D.H. Lawrence's young protagoni st. Never, that is, except perhaps Lawrence himself. In his 1913 novel he grappled with the disc ordant loves that haunted him all his life--for his spiritual childhood sweetheart, here called Miria m, and for his mother, whom he transformed into Mrs. Morel. It is, by Lawrence's own account, a book aimed at depicting this woman's grasp: "as her sons grow up she selects them as lovers --first the eldest, then the second. These sons are urged into life by their reciprocal love of their mother--urged on and on. But when they come to manhood, they can't love, because their moth er is the strongest power in their lives." Of course, Mrs. Morel takes neither of her two elder sons (the first of whom dies early, wh ich further intensifies her grip on Paul) as a literal lover, but nonetheless her psychological snare is immense. She loathes Paul's Miriam from the start, understanding that the girl's deep love of her son will oust her: "She's not like an ordinary woman, who can leave me my share in him. She wants to absorb him." Meanwhile, Paul plays his part with equal fervor, incapable of committ ing himself in either direction: "Why did his mother sit at home and suffer?... And why did he ha te Miriam, and feel so cruel towards her, at the thought of his mother. If Miriam caused his mot her suffering, then he hated her--and he easily hated her." Soon thereafter he even confesses to his mother: "I really don't love her. I talk to her, but I want to come home to you." The result of all this is that Paul throws Miriam over for a married suffragette, Clara Dawes, who fulfills the sexual component of his ascent to manhood but leaves him, as ever, without a complete relationship to challenge his love for his mother. As Paul voyages from the working-clas s mining world to the spheres of commerce and art (he has fair success as a painter), he accep ts that his own achievements must be equally his mother's. "There was so much to come out of

sons and lovers 英文简介

Sons and Lovers is the third published novel of D.H. Lawrence, taken by many to be his earliest masterpiece. It tells the story of Paul Morel, a young man and a bud ding artist. This autobiographical novel is a brilliant evocation of life in a working class mining community. The original 1913 edition was heavily edited by Edward Garnett who removed eighty passages, roughly a tenth of the text. Despite this the novel is dedicated to Garnett. It was not until the 1992 Cambridge University Press edition that the missing text was restored. Lawrence rewrote the work four times until he was happy with it. Although before publication the work was usually call ed Paul Morel, Lawrence finally settl ed on Sons and Lovers. Just as this changed title makes the work l ess focused on a central character, many of the latter additions broadened the scope of the work thereby making the work l ess autobiographical. While some of the edits by Garnett were on the grounds of propriety or styl e, others woul d once more narrow the emphasis back upon Paul.

Sons and lovers-chapter9-10

Sons and lovers Chapter Nine The Defeat of Miriam After the wedding, Mrs. Morel sat thinking about her children. She hoped that Annie would have a happier marriage than she did. Arthur was now in the army and she knew that he hated it. And Paul seemed to be trapped in his own thoughts. She felt that she must stay strong, so she could guide her children to their happiness. Paul felt life changing around him. He was a man now. Annie and Arthur had left the house. He stayed, but felt something moving inside him. Sometimes he would meet Clara in Nottingham. When he was with her he felt as if he was in a larger more interesting world. She challenged him and made him feel alive. Miriam came to see that Paul could choose the lower path in life. He could be untrue to himself. She feared that he could become a man who chases after the easy joys of life, not the pure and true things that she thought were the real Paul Morel. She could not talk to him like Clara talked to him, but she felt that she could give him something much more valuable. Paul could take no more. He felt Miriam was too good for him. He could never live up to the idea she had of him. He knew that part of him wanted those better things in life, and part of him longed for Miriam. But he also knew that most of him simply wanted to live life. When she was twenty-one, he wrote her a letter. He told her that he could not be her man, as he would always fail her. They were joined at the mind, but life was so much more than that. So if either of them were to fully live, they would have to find other people to love. She read the letter twice before putting it away. She believed that from now on her life would be without love and without of any happiness. This was the end of the first part of Paul?s love affa ir. He was now twenty-three years old. He had not yet shared a bed with a woman; Miriam had stopped his natural desires. But now they returned. Often when he was with Clara, he could feel his blood grow thick with desire. A new world opened before his eyes. Chapter Ten Clara Paul and his mother now had long talks about life. Religion was no longer a part in the young man?s life.He had thrown away all the ideas that could stop him from living the life he wanted to live. In the past,
