Chapter1:Introduction This chapter provides general information about EMC Legato NetWorker software

and supported devices. It includes the following sections:

?"About EMC Legato NetWorker" on page12

?"Supported Storage Devices" on page14

?"Enabler Codes" on page14

About EMC Legato NetWorker

The EMC Legato NetWorker product is a suite of storage management software that

provides backup, recovery, and other services to computers with a wide variety of

operating systems and data types. NetWorker products for different operating systems

are interoperable, which provides the flexibility to design a storage management

solution that best suits a particular computing environment.

NetWorker software is distributed in the following formats:

?In a media kit of CD-ROMs that contain the software and electronic

documentation for several related EMC products.

?As a downloadable archive file from the EMC Legato website.

The NetWorker product has five major components:

?Client

?Storage node

?Server

?NetWorker Management Console

?Legato License Manager

NetWorker Client

The NetWorker client software communicates with the NetWorker server to provide

backup, recovery, and archive capabilities. You install the NetWorker client software

on all computers that you want to back up to the NetWorker server.

NetWorker clients do not have to run on the same operating system as the NetWorker

server. However, to back up clients running other operating systems, the NetWorker

server must have an enabler for that type of client. For example, in order for a

NetWorker server running on a Windows system to back up NetWorker clients

running on UNIX systems, a separate enabler must be purchased and entered for the

client operating system. See "Chapter6:Evaluating and Licensing NetWorker

Software" on page71 for licensing information.

NetWorker Server

The NetWorker server software provides control and scheduling for NetWorker

operations. On the NetWorker server, you perform the following operations:

?Enter the enabler licenses for the NetWorker server and all the functions the

NetWorker server controls, such as autochanger modules, additional client

connections, and ClientPak licenses.

?Define the clients, devices, and media that the NetWorker server controls.

?Define the schedules for backups and other operations.

?Monitor the results of backups and other operations.

?Manage the indexes that track which data belongs to which client and which media contains which data.

Note: You must install the NetWorker Console server software on one computer in

your data zone to manage the NetWorker server. Only one installation of the

NetWorker Console server is required to manage multiple NetWorker servers.

NetWorker Storage Node

You can back up data directly to devices attached to either a NetWorker server or to a

NetWorker storage node. A storage node controls storage devices such as tape drivers,

autochangers, and silos.

Storage nodes depend on the NetWorker server for the following functions:

?Control over which clients use the storage node’s devices for backups.

?License management.

?Index management that tracks data belonging to a client and the media

containing the data.

NetWorker storage nodes and the NetWorker server can use different operating

systems. To use a NetWorker storage node on a Windows operating system with a

NetWorker server running another operating system, the storage node’s enabler on the

server must be of the same edition as the base enabler for the NetWorker server.

NetWorker Console Server

All NetWorker servers and clients are managed from the NetWorker Console server.

The Console server replaces the NetWorker Administration program (nwadmin)

which is no longer available.

The Console server provides reporting and monitoring capabilities for all NetWorker

servers and clients. The Console server must installed on a Windows, Solaris, or Linux

host in order to administer NetWorker servers. The Console server is accessed through

a graphical interface that can be run from any computer that has a we

b enabled

browser. Multiple users can access the Console server concurrently from different

browser sessions. A computer that hosts the web enabled browser can also be a

NetWorker client, server, or storage node.

Note: You must install the NetWorker Console server software on one computer in

your data zone to manage the NetWorker server. Only one installation of the

NetWorker Console server is required to manage multiple NetWorker servers.

Legato License Manager

The Legato License Manager provides a central place for managing the licenses of all

the NetWorker clients and servers. Instead of managing licenses separately, all

NetWorker licenses can be maintained from a single computer.

For more information about the Legato License Manager, refer to the Legato License

Manager Installation and Administrator’s Guide and the Legato License Manager Release

Notes.

Supported Storage Devices

NetWorker software supports a variety of media types and storage devices, either

stand-alone or in an autochanger or silo tape library. Devices can be connected to a

NetWorker server or storage node. For a current list of supported devices, refer to the

Legato Compatibility Guides.

The term autochanger refers to a variety of storage devices:

?Autoloader

?Carousel

?Datawheel

?Jukebox

?Library

?Near-line storage

Enabler Codes

Enabler codes (licenses) activate the functionality of NetWorker software and other

EMC products. For information about purchasing and managing enabler codes, see

"Chapter6:Evaluating and Licensing NetWorker Software" on page71.

Chapter2:Upgrading and Maintaining NetWorker

Software This chapter explains how to upgrade, maintain, or uninstall NetWorker software. It

includes the following sections:

?"Upgrading to NetWorker 7.3" on page15

?"Maintaining a NetWorker Software Installation" on page18

Important: When updating to NetWorker release 7.3 or later format, there is no way to

revert to a previous release of the NetWorker software. It is a one-way conversion.

Upgrading to NetWorker 7.3

When updating to release 7.3 from NetWorker release 6.x or earlier, the client file

indexes are automatically reorganized into new directory structures.

This is a one-way conversion. Once the client file indexes have been upgraded to the

current NetWorker release, these objects will not be available for use by previous

releases of NetWorker software.

The NetWorker Management Console software does not support direct upgrade,

which means the previous installed version must be removed before the new version

can be installed. Before upgrading, make notes of the previous database location and

port numbers used before removing the previous installation. Also, select the partial

remove option to leave the Console database on the machine for database upgrade.

Important: When updating to NetWorker release 7.2 or later format, there is no way to

revert to a previous release of the NetWorker software. It is a one-way conversion.

NetWorker release 7.3 supports direct upgrades from NetWorker release 6.x and later.

If you are currently using NetWorker software earlier than release 6.x, you must first

upgrade to release 6.x or later before upgrading to NetWorker release 7.3.

To upgrade the operating system on a NetWorker server, storage node, or client host

(for example, to upgrade from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000), first upgrade

Windows, then upgrade the NetWorker software. For details about NetWorker release

7.3 system requirements, see "Software Installation Requirements" on page23. For

instructions on updating Windows, refer to the Microsoft documentation.

A NetWorker storage node release 7.3 is not compatible with a NetWorker server

earlier than release 6.0. Update the NetWorker servers before updating a storage node.

When you upgrade from a previous NetWorker release, NetWorker is automatically

installed in the existing location. For more information about the default installation

location, see "Supported Storage Devices" on page14. For information about changing

the location during an upgrade, see "How to Relocate a NetWorker Software

Installation" on page21.

The following options are not supported during an upgrade:

?Changing the installation type (for example, from client to server)

?Editing the list of NetWorker servers that are allowed to access the computer

?Installing Legato License Manager

You can, however, make any of these changes after the upgrade. For instructions, see

"Maintaining a NetWorker Software Installation" on page18.

Windows

devmgmt.msc 打开设备管理器控制单元命令。 diskmgmt.msc 打开磁盘管理器。 compmgmt.msc 打开计算机管理。
