Earth in line of fire小行星撞击地球或成真?

A mountain-sized asteroid (小行星) which crosses Earth's path every three years has been discovered by a Russian scientist. Vladimir Lipunov, a professor at Moscow State University, said the rock, named "2014 UR116", poses no immediate threat but warned that it could hit Earth with an explosion 1,000 times greater than the 2013 impact of a bus-sized meteor (流星) in Russia. That object entered Earth's atmosphere over the city of Chelyabinsk (车里雅宾斯克), resulting in a series of ferocious blasts that blew out windows and damaged buildings for miles around. The professor said it is difficult to calculate the orbit of rocks such as "2014 UR116" because their trajectories (运行轨迹) constantly change due to the gravitational pull of planets.

The first stage of the South-North Water Diversion Project's middle route started to supply water to North China on Friday. Work began in December 2003 and was completed 10 years later aiming to pump 9.5b cubic meters of water - one sixth the volume of Yellow River - every year to the country's north. About 60m people in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and Henan will be able to drink water from the Danjiangkou Reservoir in Hubei.

China's education minister Yuan Guiren said Wednesday that soccer will be factored in when forming a comprehensive quality assessment of students, adding that schools will keep a record on students' soccer skills, Beijing Times reported. Soccer will also become a compulsory part of physical education classes to provide more chances for students to play soccer, said Yuan. The ministry also will help set up more soccer academies. The goal is to have about 20,000 primary and middle schools that focus on the promotion of soccer by 2017, said the minister.

A Frenchman named Christian Poincheval, 65, has developed a pill that makes bodily gases smell like chocolate, The Huffington Post reported. Christian says that the pills that also help ease indigestion are made from natural ingredients including fennel (茴香), blueberries and seaweed. He says that the idea came to him while at a dinner party with friends where they became so flatulent that "we were nearly suffocated". He determined that he would create a solution. The pills cost EUR9.99 for a jar of 60 on the Internet.

"奇葩"、"靠谱"英文怎么说？

"Kaopu" is a slang term commonly used on a daily basis by Chinese people. It can be translated into "be reliable" or "be worthy of trust" and is used to refer to someone or something that one believes to be trustworthy. When people describe someone as "办事靠谱", they mean the person can be trusted with certain things. Sometimes, we also say "这事靠谱", which means the thing is highly feasible or authentic. For example：

1．He is a reliable guy; you can trust him with matter of importance.

2．This news sounds real. I kinda believe it.

"Qi" originally means "rare," and "Pa" means "flower or flora". When the two characters are put together, we can easily see that the literally meaning of "Qipa" is "precious and beautiful flower." But now the word has an entirely different meaning. Currently, the word "Qipa" is very popular amongst young people. It is often used to describe someone or something that is very odd or unusual.

A person who is a "Qipa" always takes strange actions and does things that average people find to be out of the norm and hard to understand. The word adds a taste of ridicule and irony and can be used as both a noun and as an adjective.

Baby remembers happy times婴儿更易记住快乐时光

Researchers discovered that babies are more likely to remember things that trigger positive emotions. The team monitored the eye movements of a group of 5-month-olds who were placed in front of a computer screen and exposed to a person speaking to them with either a happy, neutral or angry voice. The babies were immediately shown a geometric shape after the exposure. Memory tests after 5 minutes and one day later showed that babies were significantly more likely to remember shapes paired with happy voices.

China mulls tobacco controls我国拟在室内全面禁烟

China is mulling a ban on all forms of tobacco advertising and the sponsorship and promotion of tobacco products, according to a draft regulation, Economic Daily reported. The draft was published Monday on the legislative affairs office of the State Council website. The draft bans smoking in all kinds of indoor public places and outdoor space at kindergartens, schools, women's and children's hospitals as well as in fitness venues. Civil servants, teachers and medical staff should take the lead in tobacco control, it said, adding teachers and medical workers are not allowed to smoke in front of students or patients. The draft also includes plans to ban smoking scenes in films and TV shows. The draft is now pending public consultation.

Samsung's new eye mouse三星推出眼球控制鼠标

Samsung Electronics Co said it has developed a next-generation eye mouse that can help people with disabilities compose and edit documents as well as browse the Web without using hands, foreign media reported. The project, called EYECAN+, uses a sensor mounted below a computer monitor to read a user's eye movements, with a blink of the eye used to register a click of the mouse to either copy, paste, select all, zoom in or activate another of 18 basic computer functions.(See photo)

A new menu at pizza chain Pizza Hut claims to do just that, by detecting eye movements to figure out what diners really want. The Subconscious Menu is a digital menu which features 20 key pizza toppings. Customers look at the screen, and in just 2.5 seconds, the computer records what ingredients they have been looking at the longest. It then uses an algorithm to identify the diner's perfect pizza.

Britain has named 4 locations to carry out tests of driverless cars next year to help improve road safety and reduce congestion. Trials will last between 18 and 36 months from January in Greenwich, Milton Keynes, Coventry and Bristol, Finance Minister George Osborne said. The trails are expected to increase understanding of the vehicles in a real-world environment as well as make people see how they could fit into everyday life.

The number of soccer teachers to coach students in schools will be increased to 20,000 in the next three years, according to a new scheme launched by the Education Ministry. This will be another career chance for excellent professional footballers who have retired. China to have longest subway中国地铁将成世界最长

China will soon surpass all other countries with the combined length of its subway systems expected to reach 8,500 km by 2020, Minister of Transport Yang Chuantang said. The distance will be equal to that between Beijing and Vancouver. Nineteen cities have extended their metro systems, with total mileage expected to hit 3,000 km by the end of the year, the minister said. Beijing, which will lengthen its subway to 527 km this month, has the longest subway in the country.

New research shows that the seven year itch theory is wrong - the point in a marriage when a couple is most unhappy, and therefore most likely to stray, is actually the ten-year mark. British schools are being urged to go back to the "chalk and talk" teaching that was once common in order to reproduce the success China is enjoying using the traditional method, UK media reported. High speed trains debut in BJ耐高寒抗风沙动车亮相

The numbers of tourists to popular scenic spots declined for the first time in six years this National Day holiday, such as Jiuzhaigou Natural Reserve, Huanglong Scenic Area, Mount Emei, Leshan Giant Buddha and Dujiang Dam, Chengdu Economic Daily reported. On the other hand, Pingle, Jiezi, Luodai and Huanglongxi were among the five ancient towns or cities, which made it on Sichuan's top 10 scenic spots receiving the most tourists this year. Among the old towns, Huanglongxi received 694,000 visitors. Big crowds in Jiuzhaigou and some other popular scenic spots last year may have contributed to their being given the cold shoulder in Golden Week this year, analysts said.

Researchers got 66 students to stand still, walk or jog on a treadmill, and then watch an animation of a humanlike stick figure. Overall, the students in the study who walked or jogged were more likely to say the figure was walking away from them - that is, was less threatening - than the students who stood still on the treadmill. The findings suggest that exercise could reduce anxiety by fostering the perception of a more positive environment, the researchers said.
