The poverty in the United States

It seems to be credible that for such a prosperous country, the United States can still nor eradicate poverty. Thinking it over, we will find that every society cannot eliminate poverty completely even if as an advanced country. According to the U.S. Census Bureau data released Tuesday September 13th, 2011, the nation's poverty rate rose to 15.1% in 2010, up from 14.3% (approximately 43.6 million) in 2009 and to its highest level since 1993. In 2008, 13.2% (39.8 million) Americans lived in absolute poverty. So why does America still exist poverty?

As for the reasons for existence of poverty in America, I would like to illustrate it form two main aspects: individual factors and governmental factors.

There are perennial individual factors that make some American people impecunious. Firstly, the poverty is caused by drug-taking. Taking drugs in America is a common problem, especially the youngest. A survey conducted in 2010 showed that there are around 8 percents youngsters who is taking drugs or once did. And 46 thousand people have been dead because of drug taking. They spend a large amount of money on taking drugs. As a result, they are poorer and poorer.

Secondly, the problem of single mother also contributes to the poverty in the United States. In the America, there are many single mothers who have many children. According to a sociologist, some women earn almost as much as men before they have children but less afterwards and even less if they are single mothers. They have to bear heavy financial burdens from every aspect, which make their life worse and worse.

It is well-known that credit plays a large part in American people's life. "If there is no credit, how do we survive? " Some American even ask themselves. Hence once they are dismissed, they can not afford to the loan. For this reason, their properties are confiscated by the bank. From then on, they have nothing to support themselves and their families, some even become beggars.

We can not ignore the governmental factors that lead to the poverty in America. There is no a reasonable social security system. Although the social security system plays a positive role in tackling the social problems, it doesn't aim to eradicate the poverty, the poor are the victim sufferer, rather than the beneficiary. Once those who are out of work, they can not find a suitable job immediately under the social security system. American society consists of many different races which include blacks, whites and yellows. However, not every race is treated equally. The blacks are discriminated by the whole society, especially the blacks who are undereducated and underprivileged. They have no the same rights in education and politics as the whites. Although the governments take some actions to eradicate the discrimination, it still exists in every aspect.

In conclusion, the poverty is not caused by a single factor, but a combination of a variety of individual and objective factors. So the solution to deal with the problem should rely on individuals and governments.
