Why does the idea of progress loom so large in the modern world ? Surely because progress of a particular kind is actually taking place around us and is becoming more and more manifest. Although mankind has undergone no general improvement in intelligence or morality, it has made extraordinary progress in the accumulation of knowledge. Knowledge began to increase as sooo as the thoughts of one individual could be communicated to another by means of speech. With the invention of writing, a great advance was made, for knowledge could then be not only communicated but also stored .??? What is called "modern civilization" is not the result of a balanced development of all man's nature, but of accumulated knowledge applied to practical life. The problem now facing humanity is: What is going to be done with all this knowledge ? As is so often pointed out, knowledge is a two-edged weapon which can be used equally for good or for eviL It is now being used indifferently for both. Could any spectacle, for instance, be more grimly than that of gunners using science to shatter men's bodies while, close at hand, surgeons use it to restore them ? We have to ask ourselves very seriously what will happen if this twofold use of knowledge, with its ever-increasing power, continues.

一个小小的古镇，一条小小的河，座小小的石桥，一株500年的古樟。石桥亦是长寿的，建于200年前还是300年前，不清楚了。反正它就造在古樟边，两条树根犹如两根钢梁, 一直架到河对岸。这桥就变成了名副其实的“石木结构”，而究竞是先有桥，桥搭过了岸，还是树根先伸展到对岸，石桥顺势而建，也不清楚了。
记忆中清楚的是，上世纪60年代，曾经有人要砍了树劈成木材烧火炼钢的，因为它与桥连成了一体，怕树砍了，桥也塌了，就逃过了一劫。
上世纪80年代，有人建古桥博物馆，出高价想把古桥移走。动手时才发现，所有石头的缝隙都爬满了粗粗细细的树根，离开大树，这座桥就变成了一堆亳无意义的石头，根本无法复原。就乂逃过了一劫。
小镇位于经济发达的沿海地区，上世纪90年代，这一带的古镇，随着人们钱袋鼓胀，都旧貌换新颜。小镇也想火动干戈的，但心疼这祖宗传下来的桥和树，更怕轻举妄动坏了风水，想来想去定不好方案，期间还拒绝了一些投资者，--拖再拖，却赶上了古民居修夏保护的黄金时代。
如今这里成了著名的风景点，500年古樟冠盖青葱，古桥沧桑而乂生机勃勃，小镇上民居保存完好，最难得的是，民风淳朴、天然、不贪婪，其乐融融c
而这切都是相互依存，相依为命的°先是桥保住了树，再是树保护了桥，最后是桥与树保住了古镇。要说究竟是人保住了环境，还是环境保住了人，也说不太清楚°看到的人都说，这是个奇迹。

一个人的思想一旦能够用言语传达给别人，知识就开始增长了。随着书写方法的发明，知识就进步了一大步，因为那时知识不仅能传递，而且能储藏了。所谓“现代文明”不是全人类的大性平衡发展的结果，而是所积累的知识运用于实际生活的结果。现在面临人类的问题是：怎样来运用这些知识？有人常常指出：知识是两重性的武器，可以用来造福，同样可以用来为害。现在，人们在毫无差别地把知识运用于这两方面。例如：炮手用科学炸毁人体而外科医生却就在附近用科学使其恢复健康，还有比这更令人害怕的怪诞情景吗？我们必须认真地问我们自己，如果知识的这种双重性的威力与日俱增，将来会发生什么呢？
评分标准：
1 ）译文通顺、地道且忠实原文，45分以上。
2）译文较通顺、地道，无重大错误，30 - 45分。
3）译文读起来拗口难懂，又不忠实于原文，30分以下。
2. Nowadays, the small town has become a famous scenic spot. There, with a lush green crown, stands the 500-year-old camphor tree. The old stone bridge, after all these changes, remains intact and perfect. And the civilian buildings are preserved well. Most fortunate of all, the town dwellers are retaining a simple and natural lifestyle. What they desire is but a cheerful and harmonious life.
All these things are themselves interdependent. First of all, the bridge protected the tree from being felled. Then the tree saved the bridge from being tom down. Finally, the bridge and the tree together have helped preserve the town. Whether the people have protected the environment of the place , or vice versa, I just cannot tell for sure.
Now, every visitor to the small town says : it's a miracle.
