Learning to see, seeing to learn: Visual aspects of sensemaking

A BSTRACT

When one says “I see,” what is usually meant is “I understand.” But what does it mean to create a sense of understanding a large, complex, problem, one with many interlocking pieces, sometimes ill-fitting data and the occasional bit of contradictory information? The traditional computer science perspective on helping people towards understanding is to provide an armamentarium of tools and techniques – databases, query tools and a variety of graphing methods. As a field, we have an overly simple perspective on what it means to grapple with real information. In practice, people who try to make sense of some thing (say, the life sciences, the Middle East, the large scale structure of the universe, their taxes) are faced with a complex collection of information, some in easy-to-digest structured forms, but with many relevant parts scattered hither and yon, in forms and shapes too difficult to manage.

To create an understanding, we find that people create representations of complex information. Yet using representations relies on fairly sophisticated perceptual practices. These practices are

in no way preordained, but subject to the kinds of perceptual and cognitive phenomena we see in every day life. In order to understand our information environments, we need to learn to perceive these perceptual elements, and understand when they do, and do not, work to our advantage.

A more powerful approach to the problem of supporting realistic sensemaking practice is to design information environments that accommodate both the world’s information realities and people’s cognitive characteristics. This paper argues that visual aspects of representation use often dominate sensemaking behavior, and illustrates this by showing three sensemaking tools we have built that take advantage of this property.

1. I NTRODUCTION: LEARNING TO SEE

In our headlong rush to automate people’s ability to understand their world, we have created databases, visualizations and information management systems without end – yet these tools frequently work only within a tight, narrow field. They can work well, but by their nature, exclude as much as they handle. One thing our tools don’t do well is to support humans in their attempts to understand truly complex, multidimensional sets of information.

When confronted with the job of understanding a complex area, we often revert to a visual metaphor to describe the sense of understanding. “Oh, I see,” we might say, and we mean this almost literally. New pieces of information “fall into place,” or they “fit into the picture.” We perceive the relationships among the data, and the whole thing hangs together in some coherent, understandable way.

In this paper we’re interested in how aspects of perception underlie our ability to make sense of complex information. What is it that we learn to see in our information systems? What allows us to perceive the sense in the morass of data?

Sensemaking is the creation of an interpretation that links many pieces of information together into a coherent whole. When working to make that interpretation, source materials need to be understood and relationships between the various pieces of information made clear.

Then, to help organize all the content, sensemakers often make diagrams make relationships visible.

Thus, the basis of sensemaking is to make the implicit and invisible into something clearly perceivable. And both the process of making a visible representation, and the act of understanding it, are the domain of visual perception. That is, in order to make sense, we often first need to know how to create a representation, and to know how to see it in a meaningful way.

2. S ENSEMAKING RELIES ON REPRESENTATION CREATION

During the past several years, we have been trying to understand what people really do when they try to ask hard questions in some area. After looking at many examples of people collecting and organizing information, for the most part when things get complex, they start to take notes to help answer the questions they have. And when the notes become overwhelming, they start to get organized.

That is, to answer a simple question (“what’s the population of Toledo, Ohio?” or “how much time each week does the average British family watch television?”) the procedure is usually straightforward. Find the information resource that has the information you seek in a convenient form, then look up the answer to your question in there. But what if the question isn’t so simple? Sensemaking is the human behavior of building up representations of content in order to answer complex task-specific questions. As described in earlier work [5, 20], when people “make sense” of a body of content, they accumulate multiple pieces of information, structuring the items into one or more representations that help to organize the content. It’s a very iterative task, often involving multiple tries to understand which representation will organize the material best, and then how to use the representation to answer questions about the domain.

Unlike simple question answering, sensemaking usually takes some significant amount of time and resource – both information resources and personal, cognitive, mental effort. This comes as no surprise because humans have an oddly constructed intelligence – we can recognize complex patterns with ease, but find it difficult to remember 12 separate items in a list for more than a few seconds. We can recognize intricate and subtle visual patterns – we know the look of 17th century Dutch master paintings – but find it immensely hard to multiply two 4-digit numbers together in our head.

So to “make sense” of the current crop of laptop PCs, someone might begin by reading magazines, accumulating notes on brands to buy, expected laptop prices and further places to gather information. They might organize the accumulation into a spreadsheet that makes sorting and comparing prices and features into fast, simple operations. This is the essence of sensemaking: gathering data, creating some kind of external representation of the assembled data, and then working with the representation to be able and answer questions with competence.

It’s frequently the case that sensemaking tasks require substantial amounts of external representation. It’s a bit like creating your own jigsaw puzzle from the data at hand in order to understand what the entire picture is or could be.

3. C OMPLEX INFORMATION TASKS RELY ON VISUAL UNDERSTANDING

As you’d expect, using external representations relies on basic perceptual processing skills. People create external representations to shift the cognitive loads of memory and inferential tasks onto the representation. [27] It’s a common enough tactic to have spawned its own subfield of cognitive science, distributed cognition, where psychologists study how people make and use external representations.

But where do these external representations come from? While they’re created by people who need to collect and organize information, in style and structure, they’re most often adapted from previously known and understood representations. If you need to compare a large number of prices and features, then creating a spreadsheet to organize and compare information is a simple and natural step. That’s simple. What’s remarkable is that people use a huge number of ways of arranging both things (and bits of information) in the world. [10]

For the most part, such representations are built in order to help with the problem – and in this context, making sense of a wide variety of information boils down to remembering, sequencing task steps, or making relationships between pieces of information visible.

These representation s are primarily visual devices, and are subject to many of the psychological and perceptual properties we associate with normal visual processing. But in the context of representation use, can lead to failures of use and interpretation.

While using a visual representation is a good way to shift cognitive load onto the perceptual system, it does not come without perils. Visual processing is full of perceptual accelerators that can lead to facile understanding of information contained in a representation, but can also lead sensemakers astray. Furthermore, other properties of sensemaking such as multitasking to deal with large, heterogeneous data sets can lead to their own misinterpretation effects.

4. S ENSEMAKING REALITIES

As someone works to understand a big, complex set of data, there are many subtasks that need attention. Sensemaking involves many steps, each often interacting with others along the way. In the typical model of people using information systems to solve problems (e.g., [2]) there are many process steps: identifying an information need, formulating a query, issuing the query to a data system, processing the results, and so on. There are many steps, and yet in practice, almost none of them are clearly and neatly separable from the others.

Information has a tendency to come from many sources, some of which can be handled smoothly within the representation that’s being constructed, but sometimes not. Then you’ve got to decide what to do with that information: re-code it in a form more amenable to the representation being built, ignore it, or find an alternate source of the same information. This kind of thing happens constantly when making sense of things – it’s not a neatly described 3-step process.

As a consequence, real sensemaking tasks, such as those modeled in [20], usually have a strong multitasking flavor throughout the course of the behavior. Complexities in dealing with the mundane realities of sensemaking abound. In many ways, the tasks of sensemaking can be overwhelming: it’s often unclear exactly what the problem definition really is (what does it mean to “make sense” of something?), and people frequently have a difficult time knowing how to organize the information they collect. Collected information is triaged, but not always accurately, and then how does one know when to stop?

An under appreciated effect of this task complexity are the effects of situational inattention. As described by [13, 21], inattention is a consequence of focused attention on a particular task. While it’s effective to focus on a particular aspect of a complex task, one of the surprising side-effects of inattention is that apparently salient perceptual features might be ignored. That is, when a person is working hard and focusing on a particular aspect of a problem, things can happen that you would expect to draw their attention. In Simon’s classic example, while a subject is focused on counting a particular kind of event (e.g., the number of times a basketball is passed between team players), another, unexpected event that happens during the counting process might be completely ignored.

In realistic sensemaking situations, inattention can be an important side effect of multitasking behaviors. It’s very easy for very salient information in a problem-solving task to be ignored –

not because it’s not apparent that the information is salient, but because the sensemaker has attention deeply focused on the task at hand.

In addition, many visual/perceptual effects can dominate the sensemaker’s use of data gathered for analysis. In recent study extending their work on peripheral displays [14], Campbell and Maglio show that even the boundaries between multiple monitors and the distance between displays can cause misinterpretation and errors when subjects have to coordinate information amongst nearby displays. [4]

Another well-known effect in perception are the “popout” effects of particular presentation encoding schemes [26] and similar biasing effects of data presentation. Understanding such phenomena in statistical data presentation and corresponding visual displays has led to the creation of an entire minor industry of books that help make us aware of such effects, accidental or intentional. [11, 12, 15]

The combination of complex task behaviors (with unintended side-effects of inattention), visual aspects (such as popout and masking), and unintended semantics as an effect of visual design (graph manipulations to exaggerate certain features), make the need to create tools and systems to support sensemaking tasks a tricky business. While visual processing can clearly support cognitive aspects of sensemaking, there are a broad array of behaviors that need support, and perceptual pitfalls to avoid along the way.

5. T AKING ADVANTAGE OF VISUAL PROCESSING

Despite all these challenges, many information presentation systems are designed to take advantage of aspects of our visual system. As Tufte advocates in his series of information visualization books [22, 23, 24], one of the goals of good information display is a minimal presentation that focuses on revealing the data without distractions (or extra ink, to use Tufte’s brief heuristic). Many in the field have designed information visualization tools that rely on visual properties – such as object constancy, color shading, animation and three-dimensional projections -- to create visually understandable presentations of data sets. (e.g., [25] But see [3] for a summary of many such efforts.)

In the next few sections I present three tools for making sense of complex information that take advantage of visual aspects of information presentation for sensemakers:

a. Context Lens - for fast drill-down to find relevant information in unstructured content,

b. Collection Summarizer - to get a gestalt understanding of a large, diverse collection of

documents, and

c. Video Summarizer – a pattern-based technique to automatically distill a lengthy video into a

small amount of time.

In each case, content is changed from its native form into a display form that is visually simpler to use and understand. Each tool leverages a different aspect of visual processing to support sensemaking, and each tool also works to simplify a part of the overall sensemaking activities. 5.1 Using textual stucture: ContextLens for access to contextual information

The Context Lens (CL) is a focus+context visualization and navigation tool suited for navigating large documents or collections of documents. Context Lenses have been applied successfully to navigating web pages, video collections and slide presentations.

Navigation using a Context Lens is typically top-down: from a larger-scale context or segment to a smaller one. Top-down navigation approaches often have a serious disadvantage; it is difficult to decide where to drill deeper into the data. This problem is most often caused by having condensed information (chapter headings and the like) available at the top-level views. While this is a traditional way to organize large documents and collections, it does not afford easy viewing of the desired information in context. Information scent, introduced in Information

Foraging Theory [16, 17] suggests that certain kinds of “scent-rich” information can guide users towards the target information they seek. Thus, mechanisms that improve the availability of scent to be available quickly and rapidly can be very useful.

The Context Lens was inspired in part by Hearst’s Tilebar interface [9]. A Tilebar visualizes the results of a database query and shows where key terms occur in the result set of documents. Like the Context Lens, the Tilebar uses a segmentation of the document, displayed as a grid of segments and keywords. Grid cells indicate the presence of specific keywords in a section using gray levels. Tilebars are arranged horizontally. The beginning of each document shown is visualized at the left end of the Tilebar. Several Tilebars, one below the other, allow users to compare a number of documents found in the search.

Superficially, the horizontal Context Lens appeared very similar to this Tilebar interface, as it used a horizontal grid of cells as well. However, the Context Lens visualizes only a single document. Furthermore, the Context Lens introduced the concept of brushin g: when moving the mouse pointer over the Context Lens, additional information about grid cells is displayed, whereas a Tilebar is a static visualization.

CL’s exploratory navigation style is created by letting the user “brush” the active areas of the visualization with the cursor. That is, CL delays commitment in the user interface through by allowing very rapid exploration of a document and its salient sections. Brushing lowers the cost of exploring a section of the document and therefore does not only support, but actively encourages an exploratory navigation style.

Brushing over a grid cell indicating that a keyword was found in that section triggers display of a focus windo w, showing the keyword in the immediate context within the document. Additionally, during brushing, the CL shows the start of each section, as the beginning of a paragraph often contains key information. In the original design, this information is shown below the CL. At no point does the Context Lens display the base document as a whole. This way, brushing allows users to study relevant parts of the document without actually opening the document.

Users can explore the document using the small amount of information contained in the Context Lens and then download only those sections of the document that are indeed relevant for them.

In the CL keywords are represented in columns and document sections in rows. Brushing only activates entire sections, instead of single cells. The focus window now shows all relevant keywords of a section together. This design offers the additional advantage of allowing users to examine several concordances side by side, as shown in Figure 1.

As the rows are smaller, brushing provides information for an entire segment. In this

example, we are brushing a section containing 4 keywords. On top of the context window

the CL shows the start of the segment for additional context. Note the keyword labeling in

the CL. Also note that the CL is shown side by side with the base document in this case.

The focus window floats on top of the Web page, which allows us to keep the CL very

small.

In pilot tests of people using Context Lens to find particular small pieces of information quickly (e.g., someone’s telephone number, or the cost of a particular item), users can frequently drill-down directly to the relevant piece of information (to the information-rich, heavily info-scented item) far more quickly than with other tools. In the case of CL working in conjunction with a search tool (such as with the Google search engine, as shown above), users frequently did not have to open any other additional pages, significantly improving time on task. 5.2 Using visual structure: Content Summarizer visually organizes collection summaries Summaries are immensely useful things, especially if well made, accurate and intrinsically interesting. In our information rich age, there are many situations in which it would be useful to be able to have a single, easily understandable summary of a document collection. A common element of many tasks is browsing through large collections of documents – for example, when trying to understand the contents of an infrequently visited directory on a hard drive or server. Such tasks are commonplace, yet extant tools scarcely support this overview function. Collection Summarizer (CS) is a program that takes a collection of documents and synthesizes a single summary image, attempting to create a summary that is informative, evocative and aesthetically pleasing.

CS creates a summary image montage by matching a document collection to a “best fit” pattern description of a summary. The pattern is then filled-in with elements from the collection. Although this seems surprisingly simple, the larger surprise is how well the method seems to work. A reasonably small number of design patterns serve to create a rich set of summaries, and ones that seem to test well in our pilot study. [19] This property of apparently sophisticated output is more a reflection of the complexity of the world in the relatively simple patterns.

5.2.1 What should a content summary do?

Current summary genres such as film trailers, previews or television commercials are extraordinary examples of designed compositions that summarize, but are not simple reductions of the original.

CS is an tool to automatically create an overview of a collection in a way that is both simple to understand and quickly understandable.

One way to achieve that goal is to just create a “contact sheet” that shows a representation of each item in the collection. But our goal is to be better than that. A grid of the complete document collection can be a useful overview, especially with image collections as in Figure 2.

tool made this) is effective for images, it works much less well for heterogeneous

collections, containing diverse items such as text documents, program code and

spreadsheets.

But a collection summary can be a great deal more, if we adopt a few stylistic conventions, introduce the ability to use more sophisticated graphical design elements (e.g. layering or montage) and have an ability to do minimal reasoning about the contents of the collection.

In Figure 3, CS has created a single montage that attempts to summarize the contents of the same collection seen in Figure 2. Here, the contents of the collection are not completely rendered – much information is dropped from the display (you can’t, for example, determine file size or creation dates), but the sense of the whole collection is vastly improved.

To create Figure 3, the document collection was handed to CS, a design pattern was selected from the library and instantiated. The value of such a display lies not in its overall information density, but rather in its ability to quickly evoke a sense of “what’s in the collection” without requiring extensive training in how to read the idiosyncratic details of tools like file browsers.

In this instance, the design pattern specifies the layout of the 4 images (a “most important” image, the largest, at the top of the frame), a text overlay (that is the first “important abstraction” from a text document), and a short summary of the contents of the collection (the icons with number counts and file name when the document count is 1). These 7 elements are all specified in a simple design pattern, and then instantiated with items from the collection.

5.2.2 Source content: Documents and metadata

The summaries are created from a collection of individual documents. Ideally, a summary is the kind of montage that you might create for a colleague, with the intent of giving a single glance sense of the collection.

Content of a variety of forms can be processed for use in the summary – with images (JPG, GIF, PNG) and text (DOC, PDF, …) being the most common. But additionally, small, strongly typed documents can also be used: calendar entries, notes from a journal, emails, and so on.

CS analyzes a document collection by running a number of filters over the collection as a whole and creating the “Content Description” (CD) data structure. Each filter is applied to the collection, which then populates object/property/value triples in the CD.

In the current version, filters identify common terms (by analyzing file names), creation and last-modification dates, document type (e.g., genre identification), and common content terms (by extracting text from text documents and doing concordance analysis).

Each document in the collection creates at least one entry in the CD (

), and frequently subsequent filters will identify additional information about the document. Properties that are true of the collection are placed under the $Collection symbol e.g., - indicating that the “primary type” of this collection is “text documents,” meaning that the majority of the contents are .DOC, .TXT, etc.

In essence, the analysis phase searches for information about what is salient in the collection about both individual elements and the collection as a whole. The analysis phase represents that in the CD for handoff to the design pattern instantiator.

5.2.3 Patterns for evocative summaries

Summary Design Patterns (or SDPs) are similar to those template descriptions used in [18]. Like the SDPs used for video summarization, the SDPs used here in CS specify layout in 2D plus

information about how to composite the visual object within the whole.

Each SDP item has a layout, a possible set of constraints on its layout, and a procedure for adding it into the overall summary being created. In Figure 4, item S1 is a text block that is in the outermost layer, Gill Sans, italic, and drop shadowed.

An SDP is just an XML descriptor of layout elements (as in Figure 4) -- each elements has (1) relative X, Y, Width, Height measures; (2) a composition procedure –essentially a script that specifies layer sequence, selection type and properties, translucency, etc.; (3) a trigger pattern that specifies what kind of object can satisfy the element (e.g., $Text, $Image, $List, $Date…) The SDPs are created by a visual designer and stored in an SDP library. Ideally, an SDP can generate many different kinds of layouts based on the details of what happens to be in the source collection.

SDPs form, naturally enough, the real source of design knowledge in the system: the better the SDPs, the better the resulting overview montages.

5.2.4 Building a summary by template filling

Collection Summarizer creates a summary by:

1. Analyze the source collection by creating the collection description. How many items

are present? What kind of items are they? (Text vs. image vs. short document kinds.)

The Collection Description data structure binds individual documents to symbols (e.g.,

S1, S2, etc.) and properties of each (e.g., image-type, size, creation-date, etc.)

2. Search the library of SDPs for a best-fit between the feature set, user specified parameters

and the SDPs element slots. (Match on presence / absence of elements for the slots.)

3. Instantiate the SDP by matching elements to slots.

4. Render the SDP to JPG, filling in text elements and visual transitions. Each item is

rendered by running a “render script” that specifies how to layer and merge the item

into the overall montage.

The heart of this process is step 3, the place where the template is filled in with content. To instantiate an SDP, a matching process selects the appropriate media elements from the collection.

Working from this relatively rich resource, the SDP matcher sorts the slots into priority order: required slots first, followed by increasingly less important slots to fill. Each slot has a priority rating that is a function of its overall contribution to the composition.

In general, the instantiation process proceeds by searching over the space of possible slot fillers, satisfying constraints between the slots and constraints placed on the template instantiation as a whole. These additional constraints, such as number of items in the visual display, may be specified by the viewer before the template is filled out.

5.3 Using time: VideoSummarizer extends structure to time-based media

Current summary genres such as film trailers, previews or television commercials are extraordinary examples of designed compositions that summarize, but are not simple reductions of the original.

Ideally, a video summary should briefly and concisely present the contents of the input video source. It should be shorter than the original (but how much shorter?), focus on the content (which is what exactly?), and give the viewer an appropriate overview of the whole.

The problem, of course, is what’s appropriate varies from viewer to viewer, with the viewer’s familiarity with the source and genre, and with the viewer’s particular goal in watching the summary. In some cases, the viewer may simply be searching for a moment of recognition from the summary. In other cases, the summary may become the video abstract of longer content. These are two very different uses, and require very different kinds of solutions.

Video summaries that only take into account only the fairly low-level features of the audio, video or closed-caption tracks ignore important aspects of what a video summary might be. More to the point, the most useful summary may not be just a collection of the most interesting visual, audio or text elements, and it could contain elements that are derived from other information sources (e.g., abstracts or other metadata).

In other words, there is probably no ideal summary form, and no simple algorithmic way of choosing the best images from a video stream. Instead, another approach to creating video summaries is to design the short video from a richer description of the viewer’s goal and based on a model of what different summary designs could be. VidSum takes this approach.

5.3.1 Structure in video

Most video that has been produced for a particular purpose (as opposed to informally shot, raw footage) has a deliberate structure. Regularly scheduled programs often have a very distinctive and consistent pattern of events. A news broadcast, for example, begins at a precise time, has 5 seconds of opening shot with flying logos and station identification, then cuts to an anchor person reading the top news stories, followed by a camera angle change when the long form stories begin.

Low level events are derived from filtering the video and audio signals. They are used to guide the parsing of the overall video into structural elements that can be reused as elements of the video summary. Such patterns correspond to subgenres within the style of the video presentation. (Sample genres of technical talks include “talks with no slides,” “online demo-heavy,” “panel discussion,” etc., while identified video shots might be identified as “opening statement,” “slide 1,” question asking” and so forth. For more details, please see [18].)

These highly structured videos are first analyzed with standard signal filters to give a low level signal analysis. We pass this video through filters to identify speaker changes, camera shot changes, applause, laughter, etc. [7, 8]

Once analyzed into a sequence of time-stamped low-level signal features, the features are mapped onto the most plausible large-scale pattern from the pattern library. The pattern that best fits the actual data is used to cluster the low-level events into named segments. (e.g., “slide 1

during introduction”) As in the Collection Summarizer, tag information is used to assemble the video summary.

5.3.2 Patterns for video summaries

Like the presentation patterns, a video summary design pattern (V-SDP) expresses ways of putting together video, audio and text clips into a composition. A design pattern expresses one way to pull together many pieces of a video into a coherent whole, organizing rhythm, transitions, style, pacing, presentation sequence and visual design elements.

A V-SDP is very much like the SDPs of the Collection Summarizer (see section 5.2 above), it too is a flexible template to be filled in with content provided by the analysis of the source video. To first approximation, a V-SDP is simply a high-level storyboard of possibilities laid out in a transition graph. (By contrast, the SDP from the CS system is a 2-D layout of possibilities in space.

The nodes describe the organization of images, clips, text and audio over time, including alternatives, optional subsections and constraints between segments of the whole. The pattern encodes what kinds of content should be selected (from the analyzed video) for each available slot, and then how the pattern should be rendered into final video form. In a sense, the V-SDP can be thought of as a piece of video stationery, where the slots are filled-in based on what elements satisfy the constraints. Once the media elements are identified or created, the entire instantiated pattern is rendered to digital video.

and audio over time. V1 and V2 are two video tracks that crossfade from title (with

abstract or outline) to slide 1, then to a set of key phrase words, and back to slide 2,

repeating. A1 and A2 are two audio tracks that do something similar with multiple

synthetic voices (A1 is female, A2 is male) that present different kinds of information in

the audio of the composed video summary.

The idea of a video template has been around for a while, with the best example being the Avid “Cinema” storyboard patterns. [1] The major difference between those templates and VidSum’s V-SDPs is that the analysis and composition is automated. In order to become more automatic, the V-SDPs need a large amount of additional information about the constraints between slots and the legal possible ways to fill out the template.

The pattern in this V-SDP (Figure 5) is intended to quickly summarize a presentation by showing all of the slides (for an amount of time between 0.3 seconds and 0.75 seconds) in the order in which they’re presented during the talk. Between each slide, a “key phrase or word” that summarizes that portion of the talk is overlaid on the video. (Such a phrase is chosen by a salience measure over the text transcript surrounding the source image/clip.) A fade transition switches from video track 1 (V1) to track 2 (V2) and back.

Left out of this diagram are the constraints about the instantiation: in this case, there must be more than 5 and fewer than 20 slides in the talk; the talk must have a time-coordinated transcript (to extract key phrases) and there must be enough metadata from the abstract / talk announcement to be able to craft the introductory text. (The design pattern specifies that phrases are spoken by male and female synthesized voices, one per sound channel, left and right.)

In practice, there is an entire library of V-SDPs, each specifying a particular design that will work well with certain kinds of presentations (e.g., “many slides”) or for particular purposes (e.g., “a detailed overview” vs. “a sense of the talk”).

Similarly, summaries have restrictions on the ways they can be instantiated: some patterns lend themselves to short summary lengths, while others do not work well when the summary is less than 30 seconds. Selecting an appropriate SDP from the library is a matter of checking the selection restrictions with the analyzed data at hand.

While typical signal analysis-based video summarization methods can produce useful compressions, the resulting video is undesigned in video production terms, and usually somewhat distracting in its laissez faire approach to video design. In other words, it has no sense of a visual rhetoric, or perceptual guide.

The chief benefit of the video design pattern summarization technique described here is that the resulting video tends to have a more graceful presentation. The transitions are organized and paced appropriately, framing information is incorporated into the whole, and the overall structure is discernable, leading to fewer distracting artifacts and a higher quality summary.

5.4 Tools that leverage visual perception

The three systems described above each take advantage of perception. The Context Lens depends on our ability to interpret a piece of salient (textual) information in the surrounding context. That is, it takes advantage of our ability to identify meaningful fragments of information that in isolation would be meaning-free. The Content Summarizer creates visual summaries of large document collections, composing a display of the contents that is visually meaningful and rhetorically rich. In a similar way, the Video Summarizer does the same task but creating a time-based presentation.

6. S UMMARY

Making sense of large amounts of complex data can be difficult and overwhelming to the sensemaker. Rather than following the traditional division of information work into information retrieval and report writing, it’s clear from watching people doing real information-rich tasks that they move smoothly back and forth between search, query formation, retrieval, coding, building representations, and creating final analytic products (such as reports). It is also clear that many steps along the way rely on subtle interactions between visual aspects of representations of data (such as when gathering data from the world), and perceptual aspects of the representations people build to organize their own information (such as charts and graphs). In many ways, the visual aspects of sensemaking representations are an important factor in people’s ability to collect and organize large amounts of information.

Understanding these properties allows the invention of new kinds of sensemaking tools -- ones that take into account many more aspects of perception, cognition and multitasking behaviors.
