We were on tour a few summers ago, driving through Chicago, when right outside of the city, we got pulled over(被迫停车). A middle-aged policeman came up to the car and was really being troublesome at first. He said, “You were speeding. Where are you going in such a hurry?” Our guitarist, Tim, told him that we were on our way to Wisconsin to play a show. Then his way towards us totally changed. He asked, “Oh, so you boys are in a band?” We told him that we were. He then asked all the usual band questions about the type of music we played, and how long we had been at it.

Suddenly, he stopped and said, “Tim, you want to get out of this ticket, don’t you?” Tim said, “Yes.” So the officer asked him to step out of the car. The rest of us, inside the car, didn’t know what to think as we watched the policeman talk to Tim. Then the policeman put Tim in the back of the police car and threw the car into reverse(倒车), stopping a few feet in back of our car.

Now we suddenly felt frightened. We didn’t know if we were all going to prison. Suddenly, the policeman’s voice came over in a loudspeaker. He said, “Ladies and gentlemen, for the firs t time ever, we have Tim here singing on Route 90.” Later we knew, the policeman had told Tim that if he sang one of our songs over the loudspeaker in the police car, we would get out of the ticket. Seconds later, Tim started screaming into the receiver. The policeman enjoyed the performance, and sent us on our way without a ticket.

Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. I feel there are a number of reasons for this.

Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such

as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food.

There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight.

I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives.

There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime(消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.

The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.

57. According to the text, what kind of children may eat more unhealthy food?

A. Those who often do sports.

B. Those who often watch television.

C. Those who often have meals at home.

D. Those who often walk to school.

58. The author thinks that children are becoming overweight because ______.

A. they can’t choose what to eat

B. they are too busy to go out and play

C. their parents often cook meals for them

D. there are too many fast food shops around

59. The word “steering” underlined in the last sentence most probably means ______.

A. forcing

B. guiding

C. driving

D. moving

60. The main purpose of the text is to ______.

A. tell a story

C. give advice

About ten days ago, I started to write an article on a parenting subject. I wish I could publish (出版) it. But in the days between the writing and the publishing, an unfortunate thing happened. My article discussing the lost art of walking to school was finished three days before an 8-year-old boy named Leiby Kletzky in Brooklyn tried to walk home for the first time from his summer camp.

Today I will not describe the details around the Leiby Kletzky killing, except to point out the obvious fact that it terrified every parent who heard about it. What happened this week is one of the biggest reasons why so few kids walk to school now.

In theory, walking to school is a wonderful habit, which can teach children independence, introduce the m to their neighborhoods and encourage physical activity. It’s better for the environment, eases traffic and is just generally the most fun choice.

However, many of us parents don’t allow the habit, mentioning the problems of logistics(后勤)

and distance. What we talk about less often is our fear. Maybe that’s the heart of the matter. Indeed, it is an understandable reaction. But it is not a necessary one. What happened this week is extremely rare.

Separating out the fact from the feelings is a difficult thing to do. Very few of us were ready to breathe easy about sending our young children off by themselves no matter what happened. We are far more worried now.

The good news is that we don’t have to be. Those children who go to school by themselves ca n be escorted(护送) when the neighborhood forms a “walking school bus”. That’s when designated(指定的) parents walk with groups of children from home to school. With the benefit of safety, it allows kids to enjoy one of the joys of childhood. It’s an easy, affo rdable choice.

A walking school bus is a good idea that parents thought of. Proper measures are usually out there. Sometimes all they take is a little cooperation and some courage.

59. The article mentioned in Paragraph 1 was about __________.

A. a terrible accident in Brooklyn

B. the benefit of walking to school

C. the author’s opinions about children’s safety

D. the relationship between parents and children

60. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to “__________”.

A. the habit

B. the distance

C. our fear

D. the accident

61. What is the author’s attitude towards walking school bus?

A. Doubtful.

B. Supportive.

C. Worried.

D. Changing.

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”

The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying thing. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose wishes are never rewarded. When I left a 20-year job in the U. S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer, I had no hopes at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer.

After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I hardly made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people wh o die wondering: What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadow(阴影) land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.

62. The passage is meant to __________.

A. encourage young people to seek good jobs

B. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a writer

C. show young people it’s unrealistic for writers to seek wealth and fame

D. warn young people of the suffering a successful writer has to experience

63. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing work?

A. He hadn’t seen a change for the better.

B. He wasn’t able to produce a single book.

C. He found his dream would never come true.

D. He wasn’t able to have a rest for a whole year.

64. What can be concluded from the passage?

A. Famous writers usually live a poor and lonely life.

B. The chances for a writer to become successful are small.

C. Writers often find their work interesting and rewarding.

D. A writer’s success depends on luck rather than on efforts.

D

The hole in the Earth’s ozone layer(臭氧层) has until now protected Antarctica from the worst effects of global warming. But scientists have warned that as the hole closes up in the next few decades, temperatures on the continent could rise by around 3℃, with melting(融化) ice leading to a global sea level increase of up to 1.4 meters.

In the past decades the western Antarctica has seen rapid ice loss as the world has warmed, but the other parts of the continent have been cooling, resulting in a 10% increase in ice in the seas around the area. This is because the hole in the ozone layer has increased cold winds in Antarctica, making much of the continent surface colder than usual.

But now that the gasses that cause the ozone hole have not been allowed, scientists expect the hole to repair itself within the next 50 to 60 years. By then the cooling effect will have disappeared slowly and the Antarctic will face the full influence of global warming. This means an increase in air temperatures of around 3℃and a reduction in sea ice by around a third.

The biggest threat(威胁) to the continent comes from warming seas. Robert Johnson, a scientist who checks Antarctica ice shee ts, said, “The ice sheets in Antarctica are hundreds of metres thick. But once warm ocean waters start flowing underneath, the ice will begin thinning and could break up very quickly.” Thinning ice sheets cause ice to break away from the continent and to m elt even faster. Escaping ice from western Antarctica has already resulted in a 10% rise in global sea level in recent decades.

Johnson believes that international action to reduce global warming is required immediately or it may be too late. “Everyth ing is connected—Antarctica may be a long way away but it is an important part of the Earth’s system,” said Johnson. “It contains 90% of the world’s ice, 70% of the world’s fresh water and that is enough, if it melts completely, to raise sea levels by 63 m eters.”

Even in a worse-case situation scientists don’t expect the ice to entirely disappear, but predict that, because of the melting ice sheets, the sea level rise will be around 1.4 meters higher by the end of the century.

65. What is the effect of the hole in the ozone layer on Antarctica?

A. It is causing the ice to melt faster.

B. It is making much of the continent colder.

C. It is making the effects of global warming in the area worse.

D. It is reducing the amount of water in Antarctica.

66. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Antarctica is now experiencing the full effects of global warming.

B. The temperature has increased by 3℃in recent decades.

C. Antarctica contains most of the world’s fresh wat er.

D. Ten percent of Antarctica’s ice has already been lost.

67. The best title for the passage is ___________.

A. Antarctica Melting Away

B. Our Planet in Danger

C. Action Plan to Save Antarctica

D. Let’s Save the Ozone Layer

Like every other Olympics, the London 2012 Olympics will depend upon thousands of volunteers to help with the smooth running of the event. To show the importance of the role, London 2012 volunteers are to be called ‘Game Makers’. Lord Coe has said recently: “London 2012 is relying on brilliant Game Makers to help us create a great Olympic and Paralympic Game s.”

London 2012 Olympics volunteers will provide the face of London 2012, working behind the scenes and making sure the games are as well organized, efficient and, most importantly, as enjoyable as possible.

Despite the hard-work and often unsociable hours required of volunteers, applications to be considered as a Game Maker were unprecedented(空前的) with all the 70, 000 available positions applied within days. But, for those still interested in helping out during 2012 and being in the middle of the action, there are still a lot of opportunities available.

If you were one of those who missed out on the chance of becoming London 2012 volunteers, you can now apply to be one of the 8, 000 London Ambassadors(大使). This important role involves greeting fans from all over the world, welcoming them to the fantastic capital city of London and providing a friendly face as well as help, advice and a good old traditional warm British welcome. The view of London most visitors take away with them after the 2012 Olympics will mostly be down to the volunteers and ambassadors, so these roles play a very important part in the process of making the UK a great place to travel to.

Becoming a London Ambassador is a brilliant way to be involved with the London 2012 volunteers scheme and become a part of what should be an historic summer.

56. Why are London 2012 volunteers called “Game Makers”?

A. They’ll decide whether the London 2012 Olympics are a success.

B. They play an important role in the London 2012 Olympics.

C. The London 2012 Olympics won’t be organized without them.

D. They will work hard and effectively.

It’s parents’ worst nightmare. Their child doesn’t come home one evening and is missing for several days.

When a 14-year-old boy from Atlanta, Georgia disappeared earlier this year, his mother turned to her Smartphone for clues using an app(应用程序) called Family Tracker that helped track his location.

“You can see where your loved ones are without having to call or bother them.” said Roberto Franceschetti of LogSat, the creators of the Family Tracker, which has more than 100,000 users and is available worldwide.

Parents can track the location of their child on a map, send messages, and even sound an alarm on the phone in a long distance.

“We have an option for the sender to make a very unpleasant, noisy sound. It’s a loud alarm and we repeat that sound every two minutes until the person picks it up,” he said.

Parents don’t need to own a Smartphone to track their children. The service is also accessible through the web, as long as the phone that is being tracked is running the app.

Family Tracker has an additional service that keeps records of all data from the app for a two-week period, which the company calls GPS breadcrumbs.

“With a subscription(预定), we keep all the locations where people have been on our servers. You can see where your kid has been for the past two weeks. You can find out where someone was at a certain time or when that person was at a specific place,” Franceschetti explained.

“When somebody gets abd ucted(劫持), usually whoever does this throws the phone away or takes the battery out. We were hoping that our app would at least provide information on where the person was abducted or where they had been in the past.”

But will these types of apps let out personal secrets?

“The advantages are huge compared to the disadvantages. Let’s not forget that the person always has to give initial permission—no one can be tracked unless they allow someone to do it.” said Franceschetti.

Eleven months ago, an act of good sportsmanship(体育精神) changed a girls’ running race into something bigger.

Jenna Huff received a national sportsmanship award from the US Olympic Committee for what she did for Deb Guthmann.

In the race, Jenna was behind Deb until the final few meters of the 5-kilometer race.

Then something awful happened. Deb’s righ t hip(髋部) broke. She screamed in pain and stopped.

Jenna had never met Deb and had been taught to pass every runner she could to win.

Instead, Jenna stopped with no hesitation.

“Come on.” Jenna told Deb. “We’re going to run.”

Jenna took D eb’s left elbow with her right hand. She helped her jog the last few meters. At the finishing line, she pushed Deb in front of her, reasoning Deb would have beaten her anyway if not for the injury. That act helped Deb’s team win the regional race and advan ce to the state meet.

Both girls are now 17.

Jenna is still an athlete for her school.

She and her parents went to Colorado to accept an award for the national sportsmanship award. Jenna had to give a five-minute speech to the crowd, a crowd which included a number of former Olympians. “I’m pretty scared about my speech,” Jenna said the other night when we talked on the phone. “You want to hear part of it?” She read me one part including the words from Albert Einstein: “Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to a divine(神圣的) purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: That we are here for the sake of(为了) others.”

Deb is also still running. She received a full scholarship to Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia. The award was because of her excellent academic record and great sports potential.

But she recently got hurt again and was unable to run for weeks.

Even so, I am confident Deb will write a happier ending for herself one day. Both of these young women make you feel confident about the future. They are strong, compassionate(富于同情心的) and smart.

As Einstein said—and as Jenna showed 11 months ago—“we are here for the sake of others”.

62. The story is intended to __________.

A. tell us an unexpected story in the girls’ running race

B. introduce a famous sportswoman

C. show the beauty of good sportsmanship

D. remind athletes to pay attention to their safety during the race

63. The reason why Jenna pushed Deb in front of her at the finishing line is that __________.

A. she wanted to get the prize

B. she thought she didn’t match Deb in reality

C. she helped Deb’s team to win the regional race

D. Deb had been injured

64. Deb received a full scholarship to Emmanuel College because __________.

A. she is still running

B. she was good at her academy and sports

C. she showed the good sportsmanship in the race

D. she never gave up even though she had been injured

65. What can we know from the passage?

A. Jenna was the last one to reach the finishing line.

B. Deb went to Colorado to accept the prize with her parents.

C. The author had a face-to-face interview with Jenna the other night.

D. Helping each other can make a big difference to people’s lives.

Friendship—Seven Tips on How to Make Friends

Friendship is a very important human relationship and everyone needs good friends. Friendship offers companionship, improves an individual self-worth and promotes good health. However, making new friends comes easy for some people but for many of us the process is difficult and requires courage. Below are some helpful tips on how to make and keep friends.

Associate with others. The first step to making friends is associating with other people. Health clubs, places of worship and charities are some places where you can meet new people and build friendship. But attending these places is not enough. You will need to make yourself known by becoming an active member.

Be cheerful. A smile on the face is a sure way to attract new friends as people are always drawn to a cheerful disposition. No one wants to keep company with someone who constantly looks upset.

Start a conversation. Starting a conversation is the second most important step in making new friends. Do not wait to be spoken to; you can always start the conversation. Being able to make small talk is a very useful skill in relating with other people regardless of the environment or circumstance.

Stay in touch. For a friendship to grow you need to stay in touch. There are several ways of staying in touch with your friends and these include SMS, phone calls and online social networking sites.

Do things together. Choosing friends with common interest is important in establishing friendship as these interests would always bring you and your friend together and hanging out will always be a pleasant experience. The less you have in common with your friend the more likely the friendship will not grow.

Let it grow. It is a good thing to stay in touch but try not to choke your new friend with calls, messages or visits as this would likely wear him or her out and eventually they may not want to be your friend anymore. The best friendships are the ones that grow naturally.

Enjoy your friendship. The best way to enjoy your new friends is to allow them to be themselves. Try not to be critical of them and try not to change them from who they are to what you want them to be.

I still remember my first day at school in London and I was half-excited and half-frightened. On my way to school I wondered what sort of questions the other boys would ask me and practiced all the answers: “I am nine years old. I was born here but I haven’t lived here since I wa s two. I was living in Farley. It’s about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago.” I also wondered if it was the custom for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk it.

No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the center of the playground, expecting someone to say “hello”, but no one spoke to me. When a teacher called my name and told me where

my classroom was, one or two boys looked at me but that was all.

My teacher was called Mr. Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so I didn’t stand out there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon. Mr. Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens and he had decided to read aloud to us from David Copperfield, but first he asked several boys if they knew Dickens’ birthplace, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said: “Timbuktu”, and Mr. Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me. I said: “Portsmouth”, and everyone stared at me because Mr. Jones said I was right. This didn’t make me very popular, of course.

“He thinks he’s clever,” I heard Brian say.

After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brian’s team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper.

“He’s big enough and useless enough.” Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me.

I suppose Mr. Jones, who served as the judge, remembered Dickens, too, because when the game was nearly over, Brian pushed one of the players on the other team, and he gave them a penalty (惩罚). As the boy kicked the ball to my right, I threw myself down instinctively (本能地) and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were injured and bleeding. Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me.

“Do you want to join my gang (帮派)?” he said.

At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger.

“If you talk to the plants, they will grow faster and the effect is even better if you’re a woman.” Researchers at Royal Horticultural Society carried out an experiment to find that the voice of a woman gardener makes plants grow faster.

The experiment lasted a month and by the end of the study scientists managed to discover that tomato plants grew up two inches taller when women gardeners talked to them instead of male.

Sarah Darwin was the one making the plants registered the best growth. Her voice was the most “inspiring” for plants than those of nine other gardeners when reading a passage from The Origin of Species. The great-great-granddaughter of the famous botanist(植物学家) Charles Darwin found that her plant grew about two inches taller than the plant of the best male gardener.

Colin Crosbie, Garden Superintendent at RHS, said that the finding cannot yet be explained. He assumes that women have a greater range of pitch(音高) and tone(音调) which might have a certain effect on the sound waves that reach the plant. “Sound waves are an environmental effect just like rain or light ,”said Mr Grosbie.

The study began in April at RHS Garden Wisley in Survey. Scientists started with open auditions(听力) for the people who were asked to record passages from John Wyndham’s The Day of the Triffids, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream and Darwin’s The Origin of Species.

Afterwards researchers selected a number of different voices and played them to 10 tomato

plants during a period of a month. Each plant had headphones(耳机) connected to it. Through the headphones the sound waves could hit the plants. It was discovered that plants that “listened” to female voices on average grew taller by an inch in comparison to plants that heard male voices.

Miss Darwin said, “I think it is an honor to have a voice that can make tomatoes grow, and especially fitting because for a number of years I have been studying wild tomatoes from the Galapagos Island at the Natural History Museum in London.”

We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had brought me to this spot in a small town not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.

“Look down, Elsa,” father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the square in the center of the village. And I saw the crisscross (十字形) of twisting, turning streets leading to the square. “See, my dear,” father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can’t get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another.”

Now I understood why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about the awful(糟糕的) lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she could not believe the lunches were as bad as I said.

When I turned to father for h elp, he didn’t say anything. Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a plan.

At school the next day, I secretly poured my luncheon(午餐) soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I asked our cook to serve it to mother at dinner. The plan worked perfectly. She swallowed one spoonful and sputtered(喷溅出) “The cook must have gone mad!” Quickly I told her what I had done, and Mother stated firmly that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!

In the years that followed I often remembered the lesson father taught me. I began to work as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible means to my goal. Father’s wise words always remind me that there is more than one way to the square.

If Confucius(孔子) were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerner philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So

they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.

Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

56. The opening paragraph is mainly intended to ___________.

A. provide some key facts about Confucius

Make Up Your Mind to Succeed

Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure. The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down beca use “everyone’s a winn er.” And their report cards sounded more positive (正面的) than ever before. As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”

Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years. Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to it. Here’s how they work:

A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent (才能) is genetic —you’re a born artist, point guard, or numbers person. The fixed mind-set believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult, it’s quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.

On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible. Because the ego (自尊) isn’t on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty, it’s quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact, it enjoys this experience.

We are all born with growth mind-sets. (Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise. Dweck’s book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.

60. What does the author think about the present generation?

A. They don’t do well at school.

B. They are often misunderstood.

C. They are eager to win in sports.

D. They are given too much praise.

61. A fixed mind-set person is probably one who ________.

A. doesn’t want to work hard

B. cares a lot about personal safety

C. cannot share his ideas with others

D. can succeed with the help of teachers

62. What does the growth mind-set believe?

A. Admitting failure is shameful.

B. Talent comes with one’s birth.

C. Scores should be highly valued.

D. Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.

63. What should parents do for their children based on Dweck’s study?

A. Encourage them to learn from failures.

B. Prevent them from making mistakes.

C. Guide them in doing little things.

D. Help them grow with praise.

Finally, a cell phone

That’s ... a phone

With rates as low as $3.75 per week!

“Well, I finally did it. I finally decided to enter the digital age and get a cell phone. My kids have been annoying me and the last straw was when my car broke down, and I was stuck by the highway for an hour before someone stopped to help. But when I went to the cell phone store, I almost changed my mind. The phones all hav e cameras, computers and a “global-positioning” something or other that’s supposed to spot me from space. Goodness, all I want to do is to be able to talk to my grandkids! The people at the store weren’t much help. They couldn’t understand why someone wouldn’t want a phone the size of a postage stamp. And the rate plans! They were confusing, and expensive ... and the contract (合同) lasted for two years! I’d almost given up until a friend told me about her new Jitterbug phone. Now, I have the convenience and safety of being about to stay in touch --- with a phone I can actually use.”

Affordable plans that I can understand----and no contract to sign (签订)!Unlike other cell phones, Jitterbug has plans that make sense. Why should I pay for minutes I’m never going to use? And if I do talk more than I plan, I won’t find myself with no minutes like my friend who has a prepaid phone. Best of all, there is no contract to sign—so I’m not locked in for years at a time.

He’s tired, and so am I.(=I’ m also tired.) You can swim, and so can I.(=I can also swim.) She has had supper, and so can I.(=I’ve had lunch, too.) Tom speaks English, and so does his sister.(=His sister speaks English, too.) A: I went to the park yesterday. B: So did I.(=I also went to the park yesterday.) 2.“So +主语+be/have/助动词/情态动词”结构中的主谓是正常语序,so相当于indeed,certainly,表示说话人对前面或对方所说情况的肯定、赞同或证实,语气较强,意思是“确实如此”。 例如 A:It was cold yesterday. B:So it was. (=Yes,it was.) A:You seem to like sports.B:So I do.(=Yes,I do.) A:It will be fine tomorrow.B:So it will.(=Yes ,it will.) 3.“主语+do/does/did + so”结构指的是按上句的要求做了。 My Chinese teacher told me to hand in my composition on time and I did so.(=I han ded in my composition on time.) 4.So it is with…或 It is the same with… She doesn’t play the piano, but she likes singing. So it is with my sister. 5、There you are.

M 1 Unit 1 School life in the UK英国校园生活 在英国上了一年的中学对我来说是一段非常令人愉快和兴奋的经历。
